Bering Sea Animal Hospital Acupuncture / Treatment for Pain Everyone knows about pain and wants to avoid it.

Our animal friends can feel pain the same as we do, they just don’t show the same signs. It is not common for dogs or cats to cry when in pain, they are more likely to hide their problem as much as they can. The signs are usually anywhere from overt to subtle. They may be limping or holding up a leg or just sleeping a lot, not jumping up or down like they used to, not wanting to be brushed or groom themselves, or even taking longer to lay down or get up.

There are many ways that pain can be treated today. Besides the medications that we have available now, there is a treatment that has been around for 5000 years. This treatment is acupuncture.

Acupuncture has been proven to help promote the body to heal itself by stimulating several systems such as the nervous, endocrine, immune and cardiovascular. Acupuncture doesn’t treat anything specifically, since it is stimulating the body to heal itself. There is a long lasting pain relieving effect after the needle stimulation is finished, but not every animal will be responsive to this therapy.

In general, the treatment needs several sessions for there to be a noticeable effect, although some will start receiving benefits after the first time. Also, since our muscles are under constant use from gravity, exercise and stress, “tune-ups” may be needed.

Some problems that can benefit from acupuncture are arthritis, back and neck pain, sports injuries, joint pain and myofascial trigger points. Myofascial trigger points are contraction knots in the fascia that surrounds and supports the muscles. Once a trigger point has been created, they are present for life. They can be treated but will come back. Sometimes the treatment can cause a little localized soreness which will be present for a few hours to a few days.
