PORTFOLIO AKI ERENBERG

Throughout my years of academia, I kept asking myself one question: “why design?”. After hours of research, studio, and coffee, I finally discovered an answer I was confident with: “to help change the world”. Architectural design has always interested me from a young age. Throughout the four years I spent studying at the John H. Daniels Faculty, my appreciation for design work grew exponentially as I learned to understand much about both the history of architecture and its current direction as a field. I personally have become drawn to landscape design, as I believe that sustainable practices and structures that adapt over time are vital in a generation that is changing so rapidly. I aim to take the skills I have gained both in and out of the classroom to provide smarter designs for my community, and to use my appreciation for architecture to better the lives of those around me.

Strachan Station University of Toronto, 2016

This project intended to directly counteract the urban disconnectivity issue presented by the Georgetown South Corridor infrastructure (located in Liberty Village). The structure itself is a bridge that connects both Western Battery and Douro, also acting as a train station for those looking to transfer between the GO transit and UP Express before Union Station. However, the most important program is the book exchange; an interpretation of the future of the library. Wraparound shelves on the bridge and on the platform invites visitors to take and drop books as they please, encourging public participation and providing Liberty Village with a non-commercial public amenity, something which the neighbourhood currently lacks.

Login Gate Competition, 2016

Welcome to the park! Välkommen till parken

The competition instructed designers to "be encouraged to think of ways one can revisit a public space, for a public that seems largely glued to their screen". Knowing the influence that social media has on today's generation, I implemented a design which would account for aspects of our present and past uses for the site. Currently, Toronto has a sign at its city hall that is a cultural icon for the city, attracting many visitors interested in taking a picture with the new installation. I adopted this strategy and created a large phonetic structure of the word "Folket" ("people" in swedish) that would encourage the same level of interaction, increasing traffic and attention to the swedish park space. Alternatively, the site's previous use was for milling, and thus I mimicked the traditional roofed typology (with a symbolic watermill) of a mill house over the gate.

Shortly after graduating, I had the opportunity to work as a 2D designer at Everest Signs. This was my first design position at a firm, allowing me to utilize my graphic design skills in the workplace.

This position challenged me to work within AutoCAD and Adobe Illustrator exclusively, strengthening my abilities in each program significantly while providing me the chance to learn new tools along the way. I was required to create design schematics for clients, making sure to communicate with my supervisors and fellow designers. I was also tasked with making structural diagrams of the warehouse beams. I ensured that the quality of my work met a certain degree of professionalism, following directions and meeting deadlines accordingly. When I left Everest Signs (due to prior committments), I was offered a returning position for the coming year.
