Profile of Bokuseki Soki Ito Soki Bokuseki Ito was born and raised in Aizu, Fukushima, Japan in 1930. He began studying calligraphy at 19 years of age though a correspondence course. However, the call to Christian ministry in 1950 caused him to temporarily interrupt his pursuit of calligraphy. In 1958 Ito moved to the United States to continue his graduate studies. After completing his Masters Degree in New York 5 years later, he relocated to California where he joined the Japanese Free Methodist Church Conference in 1964. During the time he was appointed as the Nichigo pastor at the Venice-Santa Monica Free Methodist Church in 1980, he was introduced to a recently started Shodo class by a church member. It was there that he was inspired to once again delve into a deeper study of the Goseki Ryu fundamental, classic style of calligraphy. An elderly master calligrapher named Ryuseki Ouchida was the main instructor of the class. After Ouchida retired from teaching he asked Ito to lead Venice Shodo-kai. In 1989 Ito was awarded the highest ranking teaching credential of Koto Shihan. Not long after, he achieved the 7th Dan, the highest degree from the Bunka Shodo Academy in Tokyo, Japan. In 2010 he was invited to be an official board member of the Academy as Jun Dojin. Finally in 2014 Ito was promoted to Dojin for his continued contribution to the Academy. For the past 30 years, Ito has been teaching calligraphy weekly at the Venice Japanese Community Center as well as teaching monthly at the Mission Valley Free Methodist Church in San Gabriel, California. He is extremely honored to have been asked to present his work in calligraphy at a private exhibition at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo for 10 days in November 2014.
