PASSION AND PURPOSE RENEWED
Wheelchair basketball player
Armando Rodriquez fnds passion and purpose in Berkeley Adult School’s gym
Armando Rodriguez, 42, of Union City has been dedicating his free time honing his skills in wheelchair basketball at the Berkeley Adult School (BAS) Gym. There, the Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP) provides sports, recreation and ftness options for children, youth and adults with physical disabilities and visual impairments.
Rodriguez has been wheelchair bound for 17 years. Before his injury, he frequently played basketball and was even part of an adult league. A year after suffering his life-altering injury, he began to miss playing the sport and started exploring wheelchair basketball to see if it was something he wanted to pursue. Initially, his attempts were challenging.
“I got introduced to wheelchair basketball in San Jose. I played there for a month or two and wasn’t really into it,” recalled Rodriguez. “A few years later, I found out about the BORP team in Berkeley and I started attending practices and was enjoying it. But I had some health issues and I had to have surgery and was out for 6 months; so I stopped playing. About a year ago, I reached out to the BORP organization again to get back into wheelchair basketball and I have been going continuously ever since then.”
Rodriguez mentioned that he was playing pretty good starting from the frst practice he participated in and started to enjoy the game again. Initially, he would borrow the specialized sports wheelchairs made available through the program, but he
has recently acquired his own sports wheelchair.
As time has passed since his frst day, Rodriguez has become more involved and is committed to elevating the team anyway he can. This past season, he took it upon himself to procure new uniforms for his team, which previously did not have uniforms when he frst started. He provided the uniforms for his team just in time for the upcoming tournaments and is always searching for other ways to help improve the organization.
“I go and practice on my own a few of times a week and I have been registering with the Golden State Warriors’ professional wheelchair team,” Rodriguez said. “I have been practicing with them since last summer and my goal is to make that team this upcoming fall and BORP has defnitely helped me with the training.”
Rodriguez plans to continue to attend practices and assisting with coaching tasks for the team he is part of. His advice for those looking to get into wheelchair basketball but are hesitant is to put the time in and do the work to overcome any obstacles they may face.
“I reached out to the BORP [Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program, Adaptive Sports and Recreation] organization…to get back into wheelchair basketball and I have been going continuously.”
Daily, brief tone-matching exercises do wonders. Why deprive yourself of the joy of singing?

The Berkeley Adult School (BAS) is a well-known and well-regarded adult education program in the East Bay. The school’s Career Technical Education Program (CTE) parallels local industrial sectors – culinary, computers, graphic arts, custodial, accounting, health care, and Emergency Medical Transport (EMT).
Gabriela Ramirez explains the decision to enroll in the Culinary Program at BAS because she “decided that it was time to fnd a job and do something for myself after many years of being home,” she says. “I knew that a certifcate and adequate training could help me with better opportunities.”
Starting the program was diffcult for Gabriela, as she went from staying at home to a school/study schedule, but she says it was worth it. She explains the culinary program “consists of experiencing cooking in a commercial kitchen, with a chef/teacher in charge.” The program is a hands-on, real-life situation that translates to the workplace. Gabriela says, “the teacher shows you the proper and safe way to use knives, prepare food, measurements in recipes, catering, even creating, packaging products, and how to start your own “business”.
BAS is a very supportive school. “The teachers and staff are very friendly, fexible, and support you at all times,” she explains. “They understand that, as adults, we have different situations and responsibilities. Many of us are parents, have one or two jobs, or immigrants
where English is not our frst language.”
Registering for the program in August 2023, the eight-week course gave her the confdence to attend a second course in October 2023. After earning her certifcate of completion, she and BAS became partners in setting up the Gala Café – the cafeteria on campus. Currently, she is the owner of the café and continues to partner with the Culinary Program where “some of the food the students cook is sold at the café and the proft goes to buying [supplies] for the kitchen and the school garden.”
Gabriela’s future goals are to continue to grow the Gala Café, expand the menu, and continue learning more about owning a business. Her advice to others considering adult school is, “No matter how old you are, you can overcome your fears. It is never too late to start something new and most importantly, make no excuses and make time for yourself.”
“It is never too late to start something new.”

Romelia Perez, 41, of Oakland, recently completed courses to earn her high school diploma at Berkeley Adult School (BAS) in June 2023. Before completing the program, she had been out of school since the age of 16.
Prior to attending classes and working on her high school diploma at BAS, she attempted to earn a high school diploma at a different school in Hayward. She described her experience there as subpar with teachers showing little enthusiasm to help her succeed. During that time, she felt unsupported by her instructors and describes it as being on her own. Consequently, she did not fnish her studies during her time at the other school.
It was during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic that she found BAS and gave another try at earning her high school diploma. She credits her instructors for helping her overcome challenges she faced along the way to ensure that she would eventually earn her diploma.
“It took me three years to fnish the program because I had a lot of credits that I had to make up for,” explained Perez. “I left the hardest class for the end, which was math for me because it required a lot of one-on-one sessions. I had a lot of help from the teachers and they really helped me understand the material and get to the fnish line. This is the reason I was able to fnish my classes.”
Completing her high school diploma at BAS was a life changing decision that led her to a path of success. Perez is currently enrolled at Unitek College in Hayward and is taking classes to become a medical assistant. She is on track to graduate in August and plans to continue her education. Her goal is to obtain a certifcation as a phlebotomist technician
after completing her current program. Even though she has moved on from BAS, Perez still recommends the school to anyone she can. She praises the instructors for their teaching methods and fnding ways to help their students understand the curriculum.
“The dedication the school has to help someone achieve their goals was something I had not experienced before.”
“I think the way they work on making sure they identify what helps you learn and tailor curriculum to your specifc learning style is a big beneft to anyone who attends the school,” Perez said. “There were just certain things that I thought I was not good at, like math, but I was taught in a way that I didn’t know you could learn it. The dedication the school has to help someone achieve their goals was something I had not experienced before.”
Perez’s advice for those struggling to commit to going to school after a long gap like hers is to fnd the reason to go. Her kids were the motivating factor for her return to education because she wanted to give them a better life. She now sets herself as an example of the transformative power of education for her children. She also emphasized that it is important to not to let age or doubt interfere because that is one of the things that held her back for a while.
All students are required to obtain the textbook and complete homework/quiz assignments. After 18 weeks (MT I and MT II), students may earn a certifcate.

ATTENDING CLASS
If you stop coming to a class, or did not start class the next week after you registered, we will drop you from the class. If you want to come back, email your teacher. If your work schedule or family responsibilities change and make it hard to come to class regularly, talk to your teacher about transferring to a class at a different time.
Like so many immigrants before her, Adriana Machado De Sousa came to the United States chasing the American dream. After coming from Brazil, she worked cleaning homes but knew she could do more. She found her way at Berkeley Adult School (BAS).
“When you’re an immigrant, you come to the United States and you think, ‘I just want to go to school to learn English,’ that’s your frst goal. Most of the time, speaking for me, you don’t think you’re capable of doing more in another country where you don’t speak the language,” she says. “While I was studying to get my high school diploma, having the support of the counselor, I thought, ‘I can do better.’ Getting my high school diploma was the frst step for me that opened doors.”
Machado De Sousa graduated from BAS’ English as a Second Language (ESL) courses while earning her high school diploma. She says the enrollment process was easy and that teachers and staff were very patient throughout the process. She was most appreciative of the support from counselor Betsey Hoyt, who helped guide her through the sometimes-complicated educational system.
“I was actually preparing myself for GED classes. Then I had a meeting with the counselor and she was the one to say, ‘I don’t think you need it since you [graduated] high school from your country. Bring the transcripts and you can take some required classes.’ If it wasn’t for her, I would have taken the GED and it would have been more time consuming, more complicated,” Machado De Sousa says. “When you meet with someone who is willing help you, it makes all the difference.”
Flexibility was another important aspect for Machado De Sousa. As an adult
school student, she says BAS staff and faculty understand that students have to ft school into their existing lives, not the other way around.
“You think, … ‘I’m going to have to come to school every day like a teenager,’ but no, they accommodate your schedule,” she says. “They know we’re all adultsit’s Berkeley Adult School - so they know we have families, we have jobs, so they try to accommodate the system, because they really want you to succeed.”
Today, Machado De Sousa works for Alameda County, helping low-income families determine eligibility for public assistance such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), medical coverage and more. She says she’s able to be in that job because she was able to continue her education after BAS, going on to earn a master’s degree in public administration and public policy from Cal State East Bay. She says earning her diploma inspired her to keep going.
“Enrolling in ESL classes is the frst step to accomplish more. My advice is to not give up, put a goal on it,” she says. “My advice is to not be afraid, not be intimidated … Staff will be very friendly and welcoming, don’t be shy, say, ‘I don’t understand, I need some help here.”
“Enrolling in ESL classes is the frst step to accomplish more.”
