A lot has been happening at AK Press. We added another collective member to our crew. Maybe you’ll meet soon at an AK book table! And, of course, we’ve put out a bunch of books since our last catalog—and we’re hearing good things about them from our readers. It feels good to know that our books are getting out into the world and affecting people’s lives and, hopefully, our social movements. You’ll find the tools you need in the pages ahead—from celebrations of revolutionary joy to detailed analyses of failed revolutions, and everything in between—and beyond. Please use these titles to read on, fight on, and take care of one another. —Your pals at AK Press
A BE OUR FRIEND! A Speaking of pals, have you heard about the Friends of AK Press? It’s a subscription program where people like you chip in a fixed amount each month and, in return, get : A A copy of every new book we publish A 50% off everything we have ever published (and AK gear like hoodies and totes) A 20% off everything we distribute The Friends of AK Press is part of the long history of anarchist mutual aid and solidarity, a tradition in which we all share energy and resources to support one another in our struggles. Sure, such attitudes go against the grain of this screwed-up society, but as the anarchist formerly known as Prince, Peter Kropotkin, put it “in the long run the practice of solidarity proves much more advantageous to the species than the development of individuals endowed with predatory inclinations.” The mutual aid behind the Friends of AK Press has kept our radical publishing efforts afloat from the very beginning of our collective, almost thirty years ago. Without it, we couldn’t keep the presses running or help hundreds of writers and thinkers share their ideas and, more importantly, their strategies for change with the rest of us. So please consider helping out. On our website, you’ll find all sorts of options (including one to sponsor someone in prison). And, if you don’t have anything to spare, please stay in touch anyway.

AK PRESS | New Releases Luigi Galleani The Most Dangerous Anarchist in America ANTONIO SENTA Translated by ANDREA ASALI
Born in Vercelli in 1861, Luigi Galleani is considered, with Errico Malatesta, the most influential militant of Italian-speaking anarchism. A tireless thinker, agitator, and public speaker, he attracted large numbers of workers to the revolutionary cause in Italy and the United States. Though he is frequently glimpsed in histories of radical movements of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, little has been written about Galleani in English. Senta’s portrayal of Galleani, who edited the infamous Cronaca Sovversiva and inspired the political martyrs Sacco and Vanzetti, provides a thorough introduction to the man and his times.

Down With the Law Anarchist Individualist Writings from Early Twentieth-Century France Edited and translated by MITCHELL ABIDOR
Primarily known for its inspiring history of mass uprisings and revolutions, France was also, in the first years of the twentieth century, the home of a vibrant, varied, and active anarchist individualist movement, which included figures like Albert Libertad, Emile Armand, André Lorulot, and the young Victor Serge. They believed that it was up to each individual to make their own revolution in their daily life, refusing to accept any of society’s rules and constraints and insisting on the need to live in accordance with one’s values. Down With the Law provides a wide range of voices from within this neglected movement, including a first-hand account of life among the members of the Bonnot Gang.

A moving, funny, and startlingly frank collection of personal essays about what it means to look a certain way. Or rather, certain ways. Navigating Kimberly Dark’s experience of being fat since childhood— as well as queer, white-privileged, a genderconforming “girl with a pretty face,” eventually disabled, and inevitably aging—each piece blends storytelling and social analysis to demonstrate how appearance privilege functions in everyday life.

Freedom in Solidarity My Experiences in the May 1968 Uprising KADOUR NAÏMI Translated by DAVID PORTER
Kadour Naïmi came from Algeria to study in France in 1966, four years after his country’s liberation from colonial rule and two years before a different liberation movement exploded in France. Capturing the youthful enthusiasm and revolutionary earnestness of the young communists, Situationists, and anarchists he struggled alongside, Naïmi’s account of May ’68 is unforgettable. Spirited and inspiring, it manages to transmit important historical lessons amid stories of sex, student life, and street-fighting.

The Five Hundred Year Rebellion Indigenous Movements and the Decolonization of History in Bolivia BENJAMIN DANGL
220 pp. | $18.00 9781849353465
4
After centuries of colonial domination and a twentieth century riddled with dictatorships, indigenous peoples in Bolivia embarked upon a social and political struggle that would change the country forever. As part of that project, activists took control of their own history, starting in the 1960s by reaching back to oral traditions and then forward to new forms of print and broadcast media. This book tells the fascinating story of how indigenous Bolivians recovered and popularized histories of past rebellions, political models, and leaders, using them to build movements for rights, land, autonomy, and political power.

Our Death SEAN BONNEY
commune editions Long recognized as a poet of radiant fury, of lament, and of refusal, Sean Bonney is a modern-day Blake whose poetry reminds us what matters. Our Death, his latest and long-awaited first US collection, is full of poems of militant despair that refuse any capitulation to the worldview of the enemy. These poems wander the hinterlands of our absolutely endangered cities, chart the aftermath of the collapse of the social movements of the early part of the decade, and pay homage to the Greek anarchist poet Katerina Gogou.

9781849353625 | 364 pp. | $18.00 | january
Transformative justice seeks to solve the problem of violence at the grassroots level, without relying on incarceration or policing. Community-based approaches to preventing crime and repairing its damage have existed for centuries, often operating under the radar. Beyond Survival puts these strategies front and center as real alternatives to today’s failed models of confinement and “correction.” Revolution and the State Anarchism in the Spanish Civil War, 1936–1939 DANNY EVANS
9781849353656 | 230 pp. | $20.00 | february
This book analyses the processes of revolution and state reconstruction that took place in the Republican zone during the Spanish Civil War. It focuses on the radical anarchists who sought to advance the revolutionary agenda. Their resistance to state reconstruction was informed by the essential insight of anarchism: that the function and purpose of the modern state cannot be transformed from within. Direct Action in Montevideo Uruguayan Anarchism, 1927–1937 FERNANDO O’NEILL CUESTA; Translated by LUIGI CELENTANO
9781849353649 | 340 pp. | $22.00 | march
The astonishing tale of revolutionaries willing to use extreme methods to achieve their goals. It also uncovers a complex underground culture of men who violated the norms of a social order they considered unjust, responding to the violence of exploitation and poverty with a violence of their own—robbing banks to fund revolutionary activities, planting bombs, fighting strikebreakers, aiding fugitives, and attacking, even assassinating, bosses and political figures. Insurrection The Bloody Events of May 1937 in Barcelona AGUSTÍN GUILLAMÓN; Translated by Paul Sharkey
9781849353601 | 524 pp. | $25.00 | april
May 1937 saw the defeat of one of the most advanced revolutions in modern history. In Insurrection, Agustín Guillamón explains how and why it happened. One of the foremost historians of the Spanish Civil War writing today, Guillamón sheds light on some of the most vexing and previously unanswered questions about the conflict, especially about how Stalinist and Republican forces conspired to suppress the uprising.

AK PRESS | Forthcoming The Face of Struggle An Allegory Without Words SETH TOBOCMAN
9781849353779 | 64 pp. | $16.00 | april
In the tradition of the wordless graphic novel as developed by Frans Masereel and Lynd Ward, this book is an allegorical take on our current age of strongman politics, a worldwide nightmare in which thugs like Trump herald the possible rise of a new, modern form of fascism. In a series of thirty-seven striking twocolor images, Tobocman traces the dynamics of political discontent and struggle. With an introduction by Peter Kuper. Deciding for Ourselves The Promise of Direct Democracy CINDY MILSTEIN (Ed.)
9781849353731 | 300 pp. | $19.00 | april
In the spirit of the Zapatistas, Deciding for Ourselves demonstrates that “the impossible is possible.” A better world through self-determination and self-governance is not only achievable, it is already happening. This anthology looks at contemporary examples of autonomous, directly democratic spaces and the real-world dilemmas they experience, all while underscoring the egalitarian ways of life that are collectively generated in them. Eclipse of Dreams The Undocumented-Led Struggle for Freedom PEDRO SANTIAGO MARTINEZ, CLAUDIA MUÑOZ, MARIELA NUÑEZ-JANES, STEPHEN PAVEY, FIDEL CASTRO RODRIGUEZ, & MARCO SAAVEDRA (Eds.)
9781849353816 | 160 pp. | $16.00 | may
After the DREAM Act failed, many young undocumented activists understood that pinning their hopes on a piece of legislation had been a bad idea. Eclipse of Dreams tells the stories of a new generation of young people who see the injustice built into the American dream. From direct action to the infiltration of immigrant detention centers, these youth are leading a movement for human liberation. Classic Writings in Anarchist Criminology A Historical Dismantling of Punishment and Domination ANTHONY J. NOCELLA II, MARK SEIS, & JEFF SHANTZ (Eds.)
9781849353793 | 288 pp. | $22.00 | may
Anarchists were among the earliest modern thinkers to offer a systemic critique of criminal justice—identifying the sources of social problems in relations of inequality, and recognizing that the institutions preferred by mainstream criminologists were actually causes or enablers of those harms. This volume collects critical writings from William Godwin, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Mikhail Bakunin, Peter Kropotkin, Lucy Parsons, Emma Goldman, and many others.
