Editorial Friends, we all have heard the story of the caterpillar struggling to break out of its cocoon. When helped by a kind hearted person it is rendered wingless. That struggle was in fact nature's way to help develop its wings but the butterfly was left to die without getting a chance to fly. Well it's a sad instance, but it surely goes a long way to help us realize that the so called obstacles are nature's way to help prepare us for challenges ahead. When faced with challenges, we should never get bogged down but instead strive to rise above ourselves and face them head on. The events in the life of one such great soul reveal the true character of human spirit. 2nd. January 1988, Dadashri left his mortal body and began His journey to 'Mahavideh Kshetra', leaving behind the legacy of 'Akram Vigyan' in the hands of Niruma and Pujyashri. We share a small article giving a glimpse about His absolute 'vitrag' state. - Dimple Mehta.

udhanshu, a multitalented student was not only a topper in academics but was an outstanding athlete as well. Due to his multifaceted personality his cupboard was brimming with medals and trophies won at various athletic meets and competitions held over the past years. He held the school records for the 100 meters running race as well as the 100 meters free stroke in swimming. Like every year, the annual sports meet was announced by the school. Many students registered their names for their favourite sports and also began practising rigorously. As usual, Sudhanshu too registered for his two pet events. But this year his friends compelled him to try his hand at steeple chase. Being the supreme 04 | January 2015
athlete that he was, he too felt confident of winning it although he would be participating in such a race for the first time. The day of the meet finally arrived and the school stadium was filled with friends and family of the participants. The cheer leaders and the school band added to the already charged atmosphere. Soon the sports teacher announced the schedule of the day and the first event which was 100-meter free style swimming. Having held complete monopoly over the event, there were very few challengers to Sudhanshu and he won the race quite comfortably. Next was the 100 meter dash. Here too Sudhanshu won but had to put in his best efforts to ward off the challenge from one of his batch mates. It was his experience that helped him win eventually. Finally it was the turn of the steeple chase. With two gold medals already to his credit, the atmosphere in the stands was fully charged in anticipation of a first ever hat trick of gold medals by any athlete in the history of the school. Cheers of SU-DHAN-SHU, SU-DHAN-SHU
filled the air as the race began. But this time he could not pull it off and wasn't able to win the race. A pall of gloom descended on the stadium and Sudhanshu was just not able to digest the feeling of having lost a race. This sadness completely overshadowed the joy of having won two gold medals! With two gold medals strung around his neck, he reached home in a dejected state and hid his face in shame in his grandfather's lap. On getting to know the reason his grandfather tried to pacify him saying, “If you behave like this then your two gold medals will surely feel sad.”
“But I am crying for having missed out on the third gold.” “But I am crying for having missed out on the third gold.” Sudhanshu replied with tears rolling down his cheeks. “Just enjoy the moment and bask in the glory of having won two medals.” His grandpa tried to console him. “No, but I don't like to lose.” A sobbing Sudhanshu retorted. Trying to instill some sense in Sudhanshu, his grandpa continued, “Experience of success is incomplete without the taste of defeat. Do you know that challenges and obstacles are as important as self-confidence and hard work for one's progress? It is defeats like these that help one to remain grounded else one would tend to become egoistic. Winning continuously can make one complacent resulting in his downfall. But a loss would warn him of reality. These losses can be blessings in disguise if we take them in our stride sportingly. If we learn from such experiences then in future we can prepare
ourselves better and win.” Sudhanshu was still not convinced and was feeling dejected as he was unable to digest the feeling of having lost the race. Realising that Sudhanshu was still unable to come to terms with the loss, his grandpa continued, “My dear son, eating only sweets can spoil the taste. But complimenting them with spicy items would enhance their taste. Son, the world is your stage. Play the game to the best of your abilities but accept losses and defeats sportingly. Have neither jealousy nor complaints. Instead, check and analyse where you erred! And then, begin afresh with renewed vigour and enthusiasm. What do you say?” Now Sudhanshu was totally recharged & freshened. He hugged his grandpa saying, “I am blessed to have a grandpa like you! From tomorrow morning the practice for steeples too shall begin with running and swimming. What do you say, Dadaji?” “That's the spirit my son.” The pair got up giving high five to each other and walked towards the kitchen to celebrate winning two gold medals with sweet that sudhanshu's mom had prepared. Let us see, what Dadashri says about this... Akram Youth | 05
Just look at these speedbreakers on the road. They are for your safety. If they were not there, people would simply drive in madness and there would be chaos all around. Speedbreakers are essential hurdles to normalize movements and keep people in normality. So treat difficulties and obstacles as beneficial only. Comforts will make you slip whereas obstacles will enable you to grow in awareness.

adashri: It is good to find obstacles on our way. We can progress only if we take them positively. If you dislike them they will hinder your growth. Every obstacle or difficulty first brings about a degree of strength and courage to overcome it. That is the law of Nature! Otherwise one will collapse there and then.

POSITIVE VISION
in adversity Lord Mahavira taught positive vision to his disciples saying, “When you go out and somebody hurts you with a stick, just understand that it is lighter compared to more violence as in fracturing your hand. If you are badly beaten resulting in fractures, then also be consoled that at least you are alive. You could have been dead otherwise.” Such a positive vision will keep you joyous and at ease. Crying for comfort will not help. Comforts and likings are like 'food' whereas discomfort and obstacles are like 'vitamins'. They rejuvenate you and make you strong.
Pujya Dadashri’s Punyatithi 2 January The persons who have come into contact with Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan, a very astonishing personality of the current era and the founder of the Akram Vignan, possess a remarkable imprint of him in their heart. An elaborate introduction of such a divine incarnation can only be had from understanding his level of knowledge and state of internal bliss. Param Pujya Dadashri's behavior was highly idealistic Vis-a -Vis his state of supreme knowledge. Dadashri's compassionate dealing with people wishing their well being all the time is quite unparalleled. A kind of neutral and equanimity oriented behavior can only be seen in enlightened beings. A high degree of awareness that none should be hurt in even a slightest form was visible in all his acts. This awareness was at its peak in last nine months. He was instructed by Doctors to take proper rest and care for health. Resultantly all seekers were advised not to take more than 2 minutes of his time individually. However Dadashri always used to ensure that a particular seeker got the specific attention through someone else so that he won't feel any discomfort having come so far. His constant awareness to the fact that no harm should be caused to anyone gives us a glimpse of his highly compassionate nature.
Pujya Dadashri kept a very low profile though he was supreme. He never assumed the stature of a Guru/master but remained a humble person maintaining a learning attitude. He set a unique example by living a very idealistic and simple life while staying in full state of awareness of the soul, incumbently free from all attachments of the world. Dadashri had a burning desire – 'Let the whole world experience the bliss that I experienced'. He used to say with utmost compassion that – “I cannot see the miseries of the people. I wish all of them attain peace and prosperity and many of them even salvation. I will stay unto the last and ensure that people attain moksha, ultimate liberation. In fact I am in a state of bliss of the ultimate salvation as such. My wholesome wish is that let the world benefit from my supreme knowledge.” He further used to say that _ “Half the world will benefit from me directly and the other half will be benefitted through efforts of my mahatmas (seekers following Dada). We have already been benefited. Now we should only wish for others to gain”. Then the Nature will take care of the rest. Akram Youth | 07

Glimpses of Great Souls 08 | January 2015
ave you ever imagined what it must feel like to be born healthy with all five senses, and then having some of them being taken away due to illness? Well Helen Keller lived through that. Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Keller was born with her senses of sight and hearing, and started speaking when she was just 6 months old. She started walking at the age of 1. In 1882, however, Keller contracted an illness—called "brain fever" by the family doctor—that produced a high body temperature. Within a few days after the fever broke, Keller's mother noticed that her daughter didn't show any reaction when the dinner bell was rung, or when a hand was waved in front of her face. Keller had lost both her sight and hearing. She was just 18 months old. As Keller grew into childhood, she developed a limited method of communication with her companion, Martha Wa s h i n g t o n , t h e y o u n g daughter of the family cook. The two had created a type of
sign language, and by the time Keller was 7, they had invented more than 60 signs to communicate with each other. In 1886, Keller and her parents visited the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston, Massachusetts. There, the family was introduced to one of the institute's most recent graduates, Anne Sullivan. And so began a 49-year relationship between teacher and pupil. In March 1887, Sullivan began by teaching Helen finger spelling, starting with the word "doll," to help Keller understand the gift of a doll she had brought along. At first, Keller was curious and then defiant, refusing to cooperate with Sullivan's instruction, yet Sullivan kept working at it, encouraging Helen to go through the regimen. In a dramatic struggle, Sullivan taught Keller the word "water"; she helped her make the connection between the object and the letters by taking Keller out to the water pump, and placing Keller's hand under the spout. While Sullivan moved the lever to flush cool water over Keller's hand, she spelled out the word w-a-t-e-r on Helen's other hand. Keller understood and repeated the word in Sullivan's hand. By nightfall, she had learnt 30 words!! In 1890, Keller began speech classes at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Boston. She toiled for 25 years to learn to speak so that others could understand her. As her story became
known to the general public, Keller began to meet famous and influential people. One of them, Henry H. Rogers, a Standard Oil executive was so impressed with Keller's talent, drive and determination that he agreed to pay for her to attend Radcliff College. There, she was accompanied by Sullivan, who sat by her side to interpret lectures and texts. By this time, Keller had mastered several methods of communication, including touch-lip reading, Braille, speech, typing and finger-spelling. Keller then wrote her first book: The Story of My Life. After college, Keller set out to learn more about the world and how she could help improve the lives of others. She became a wellknown celebrity and lecturer by sharing her experiences with audiences, and working on behalf of others living with disabilities.
No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars or sailed an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.
Always be an Optimist. - Helen Keller Akram Youth | 09
Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Keller tackled social and political issues, including women's suffrage, pacifism and birth control. In 1915, along with renowned city planner George Kessler, she co-founded Helen Keller International to combat the causes and consequences of blindness and malnutrition. In 1920, she helped found the American Civil Liberties Union. Between 1946 and 1957, she traveled to 35 countries on five continents. In 1955, at age 75, Keller embarked on the longest and most grueling trip of her life: a 40,000-mile, five-month trek across Asia! Through her many speeches and appearances, she brought inspiration and encouragement to millions of people. We should all learn from Keller that you can do anything you strive for, as long as you don't give up. There's also a fundamental reason why Keller could reach the places she did: her beloved teacher. Teachers are our gurus and must be treated with the utmost respect and kindness. The gift of knowledge that they bestow is unparallel to any other. During her lifetime, she received many honors in recognition of her accomplishments. Keller died in her sleep on June 1, 1968, just a few weeks before her 88th birthday. During her remarkable life, Keller stood as a powerful example of how determination, hard work, and imagination can allow an individual to triumph over adversity. By overcoming difficult conditions with a great deal of persistence, she grew into a respected and world-renowned activist who labored for the betterment of others.

“I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do something I can do. - Helen Keller
Experiences Learning Through Experience
Although I took 'gnan' in 2009 but I was in touch with Dadashri's 'satsang' since childhood as my parents had taken 'gnan' years back and I used to accompany them to attend 'satsang'. Initially I used to accompany them for the sake of fun and the chance to go on an outing. The actual realization of this amazing philosophy and its true impact was felt only after I took 'gnan' in 2009. Being a resident of Rajkot, I too had the typical trait of all Saurashtrians – 'praise and respect don't matter, but none should ever insult me.' I used to feel miserable every time, when I faced an insult. Gradually I took up 'seva'. But once you master a particular 'seva' and you are asked to forgo it, it results in a lot of negativity and anger. Now since past 2 -3 years I have been attending YMHT 'satsang' regularly which has proved to be a blessing. So whenever negativity arises, Niruma's words immediately echo in my mind, “Although we were instrumental in developing this 'Simandhar City', if we were asked to leave the place, we would do so immediately without any hesitation.” This statement had such a massive impact that whenever any such situation arose it made me think of Niruma and Her magnanimous attitude. Besides that, another thing that made a major impact was the interactions with 'Aptputras' during 'Yuva camp'. Although they are 'Aptputras', they interact with such humility that we feel they are just one amongst us and not an 'Aptputra.’ - Dhaval Kandolia, Rajkot

Questioner : I tend to lose my cool very often and get angry on people. What should I do to correct this? Pujyashri : Try to find the root cause as to what makes you angry. Just as that gentleman mentioned that he gets angry when he is cornered. Likewise, you too try to find the reason behind losing your cool. As soon as you resolve those causes, you won't lose your temper. Do you get angry or it happens? Questioner : It happens. Pujyashri : Ok...so it happens. Now let's try to find the reasons working behind it. Do you get angry if somebody does not allow you to play? Questioner :Yes Pujyashri : Do you also get angry when although you have studied for hours, you are asked to study for some more time? Questioner : Ya. Pujyashri : Also, if you are hungry and you aren't allowed to eat and are asked to wait for some time. Then too you might lose your cool, right? Questioner : I end up quarrelling with my 12 | January 2015
family and friends even when I don't intend to. Pujyashri : It happens. When somebody says something about us, our ego gets affected and that makes us feel angry. Questioner : But I don't even feel guilty, nor do I repent over my actions. Pujyashri : You don't repent, but do you think, it is worthwhile to get angry ? Questioner : wipe it out. Pujyashri : Suppose some food is spilled over the floor, what would you do? Play in that puddle or wipe it out? Questioner : No. Pujyashri : What would you do? Wouldn't you clean up the mess? What do we do if we spill some tea or 'dal' on our clothes? Is it right to move around in that dirty state? Likewise, anger is just like dirt. It needs to be cleaned. Do you get the point? So we should repent over it. Do we like it if we are scolded? If somebody gets angry on you and says what a fool you are! You don't even know how to hold the mike, then wouldn't you get angry on that person?
Anger Would you like being treated in such a manner? Similarly would that person like it when you tend to get angry? Wouldn't he feel bad about it? So we need to firmly decide that we don't want to hurt anybody. Even so, if it happens, ask for forgiveness. You should repent saying, “Dadabhagwan I don't want to hurt anybody. By repenting, anger will start decreasing and gradually it will diminish completely. Should anger be decreased or increased? What is better of the two? Questioner : It should decrease. Pujyashri : By repentance, it gets decreased. Understood?

Whatever has
happened
is Justice
ONE'S OWN MISTAKES MAKES ONE SEE INJUSTICE Questioner : You have compared nature's justice to a computer, but a computer is mechanical. Dadashri : There is nothing else that comes close in comparison, which is why I have used this simile. A computer is simply used to exemplify the similarity between feeding in data and the sowing of seeds, which are one's inner intentions called 'bhaav'(intent). So 14 | January 2015
A pauper may win a million rupees in a lottery. That is justice, and it is also justice when someone's pocket is picked.
in this lifetime, whatever 'bhaavs' one has, these 'bhaavs' create new karma for his coming life. That is, he is planting the seeds in this life, the result of which he will realize and experience in his next life. So whatever he experiences in this life is really the discharge or the results of his past karmas. This discharge is under the control of 'Vyavasthit' (scientific circumstantial evidence). It is always dispensing justice. It only dispenses nature's justice. A pauper may win a million rupees in a lottery. That is justice, and it is also justice when someone's pocket is picked. NATURE IS ALWAYS JUST Questioner : You say that nature is always just, so why are there so many natural disasters? Why do we have earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods? Dadashri : Nature is always dispensing justice. There is rain for crops to ripen. Even the earthquakes are natural justice in operation. Questioner : How so? Dadashri : Nature only catches those who are guilty. All these events serve to catch the offenders. The natural justice in this world is never disturbed. Nothing operates outside the realm of natural justice, not even for a moment. FOR THOSE WHO WANT LIBERATION If there is too much salt in the soup, that too is justice. Questioner : You have told us to observe whatever happens, then where is the need to seek justice? Dadashri : I am trying to explain justice, in a different light. Let me explain. A man Akram Youth | 15
How is one to understand this? The worldly justice will proclaim the eldest brother a shameless rogue and a cheat. But nature's justice says that
Whatever has happened is correct. who gave me a glass of water must have had some kerosene on his hands. When I went to drink the water, I could smell the kerosene. I simply became the 'observer' and the 'knower' of this event. Why did this happen to me and what is the justice behind this? It had never happened before, so why was it happening today? I concluded that it must be because of my own account. So I settled the account discreetly. If this were to happen again and again, I would drink the water without making a fuss. UNFAIR DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH IS JUSTICE Upon the death of their father, four sons have a dispute over the inheritance of some land. The property at first lands in the hands of the eldest son who refuses to share it with his younger brothers. The land was to be divided equally amongst the four of them with each receiving fifty acres. Instead, one received twenty-five acres, one took fifty acres, one took forty acres and one received only five. How is one to understand this? The worldly justice will proclaim the eldest brother a shameless rogue and a cheat. But nature's justice says that what has happened is correct. Each of them received exactly the amount they were destined to. The difference between what they actually received and what 16 | January 2015
they were meant to receive according to their father's instructions has paid off their pending accounts from their past life. DO NOT LOOK FOR JUSTICE Why do you look for justice? I asked a girl why she was looking for justice and she replied, “You have no idea what my mother-in-law is like. Since I came into this home, she has given me nothing but grief. What have I done wrong?” I told her that no one harasses anyone without knowing him or her. It must be your unsettled account. She said, 'I had never seen her face before.' I told her, 'you may not have seen her in this life, but do you know the accounts of your past life with her?' Whatever is happening with her is justice. The intellect will say, “Why are they criticizing me when I did such a great job?” This is the support you are giving to your intellect. Are you looking for justice? Whatever was said about you was correct. Why did they not say anything negative until now? Why were they not saying anything before? And now, on what basis are they telling you so? When you think about it, do you not feel that whatever he is saying is correct? Even when he refuses to give you a pay raise, it is justice. How can you call it injustice?

he 'nonattachment ' (mamta rahit) state of a 'Gnani.' This incident that took place in Baroda on the day when Hiraba left for her heavenly abode describes the amazing 'vitragi' state of Dadashri. Dadashri was on the second floor of the house when the maid in service of Hiraba ran up from the first floor to inform Him about the passing away of Hiraba early at 5.00 am that morning. She was in tears when she
the sad news but Dadashri did not panic even for a moment and calmly instructed her to proceed with the necessary rituals while He would join them after completing His regular 'vidhis' (prayers) . It was almost after an hour and a half that Dadashri came down after having completed His 'vidhis' for Hiraba. Generally in such circumstances any one would get emotional but Dadashri maintained His poise and it seemed as if not even a 'parmanu'
was absolutely 'sahaj' (natural). This incidence quite distinctly highlights calm & composed state of a 'Gnani.' How absolutely 'vitrag' they are. Even the wife's demise cannot affect their internal state of remaining free & unattached entirely 'mamta rahit' and 'vitrag'.

Science & Inventions Braille is a writing system used by the blind and the visually impaired. It is traditionally written with embossed paper.
The Braille system was developed in 1829 by Louis Braille and it was adopted officially in France in 1854. The system is based on embossed dots, and each Braille character, also called a cell, is composed of 3 columns of 2 dots. The Braille system represented a great innovation, on an existent invention of Charles Barbier's code. Barbier was a Captain of the French Army, and he developed the system to allow soldiers to communicate during the night, without making sounds and without using light. Braille refined the 'code' and created smaller symbols that could be encompassed by the finger. 18 | January 2015
You may be wondering though – how did Braille think of actually inventing such a device and why? Well, the story is that while playing in his father's leather workshop when he was 4, Louis tried to use a sharp, pointed tool called an awl. As he bent over, intending to try making shoes like his father did, the awl slipped and went into his eye, blinding him. With sight in just one eye, he attended school for two years, but his other eye became infected by the first, and he became totally blind. He had to leave school because he wouldn't be able to learn much more without eyesight. In those days there was little assistance for blind people and thus,
Asking the right questions sometimes can be more useful than having the right answers! he had always wanted to help the blind, especially those who could not see at all, ever since. When he was 10, he enrolled in a newly opened school for blind boys. They were taught to read but not to write. The writing they read was embossed on the page so that they could feel the words with their fingertips. In 1827 the first book in Braille was published. It took a while for the system to catch on. By 1990 Braille was being used in almost every country in the world and had been adapted to almost every known language, from Albanian to Zulu. In 1952, Louis Braille was officially recognised in France as one of the nation's heroes. His body was moved to Paris and buried in the Pantheon, where the greatest French achievers are honoured. Thus, this story illustrates that even great innovations can emerge from old ideas or existent concepts. Asking the right questions sometimes can be more useful than having the right answers!

How
To
Improve Memory ?
F
riends, with exams round the corner we felt that the time was just right to highlight the aspects of memory, how to harness and improve it. We all are well aware that the ultimate prescription is to chant 'Dada Bhagwan Na Aseem Jai- jaikar Ho' for a few minutes daily by reading out each and every alphabet with your eyes shut. Besides that, you can also try a few of the below mentioned tips. Memory is encoded and stored through the use of electricity and chemicals. As one brain cell sends signals to another, the connection between the two gets stronger. Thus, with each new experience, your brain slightly rewires its physical structure. In fact, how organized is your brain is determined by the way you use your brain.
Harnessing the power of your brain The human brain has an astonishing ability to adapt and change especially in young age. You can harness the natural power to enhance your ability to learn new information and improve your memory. When you exercise the body, you exercise the brain Physical exercise increases stock of oxygen in your brain and reduces the risk of disorders that lead to memory loss. Exercise may also enhance the effects of helpful brain chemicals and protect brain cells.
Enhancing memory capacity tip 1: Improve your memory by sleeping When you're deprived of sleep, your brain can't operate at full capacity. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills are compromised. Whether you're studying or working, lack of sleep is invitation for disaster. Research shows that sleep is necessary for memory consolidation. It is during the deep sleep stages the chemical formation to enhance memory capacity takes place. 20 | January 2015
The easy
Dada method
Improving memory tip 3: Eat a brain-boosting diet Just as the body needs fuel, so does the brain. ¡ Limit calories and saturated fat and eat more fruit and vegetables. There are variety of fruits and vegetables with good antioxidant content. It protects your brain cells from damage. Try leafy green vegetables.
Improving memory tip 2: Laughter is good for your brain You've heard that laughter is the best medicine, and that holds true for the brain as well as the body. Unlike emotional responses, which are limited to specific areas of the brain, laughter engages (stimulates) multiple regions across the whole brain. Furthermore, listening to jokes and working out punch lines activates areas of the brain vital to learning and creativity.
Improving memory tip 4: Only a few days hard work with pure chit might make wonders and help you score good marks in your exams. Rather than regretting on the past and loosing the time left in hand, start preparing from now till the exam hour with full sincerity. - Pray to Dada Bhagwan to help you gain pure chit to concentrate in your studies for maximum retention in exams. - Start reciting / chanting “Dada Bhagwan Na Aseem Jai Jai Kar Ho two to three times a day with eyes closed, concentrating on each word you chant with full bhaav for at least 10-15 minutes at a time.
Improving memory tip 5: Give your brain a workout The more you work out your brain, the better you'll be able to process and remember information. The best brain exercising activity is to have a break from your routine a little bit. Find something which is...
New : The activity needs to be something that's unfamiliar and out of your regular comfort zone.
Challenging : Anything that takes some degree of mental effort and expands your knowledge will work. Examples include learning a new language, instrument, or sport, or tackling a challenging crossword or Sudoku puzzle. Fun : Enjoyment is important in the brain's learning process. The more interested and engrossed you are in the activity, the more likely you'll be to continue doing it and the greater the benefits you'll experience. Akram Youth | 21

Q : What should I do to avoid feeling sleepy while studying? Ans: First of all we should try to find out the reasons for feeling sleepy. Is it due to overeating or due to exhaustion from playing or is it due to of lack of interest in studies? Now, if you were asked to watch a movie, then would you feel sleepy? If some of your friends were to come over to play, then would you feel so? You wouldn't, right? This implies that you feel sleepy because of your lack of interest in studying. Even in case of movies and games, you would feel sleepy if they aren't of your interest. So, please try to analyze and identify the root cause and try to correct it. Results will follow automatically. Another simple solution to overcome sleepiness would be to get up from your study table and have a glass of water that shall help you feel fresh & re-energize yourself.

Makar Sankranti Our ancient ones (rishis) taught us, at the inner core, the human life is Sat-ChitAnand (Truth-Consciousness-Bliss) and each and every activity in life is meant to lead the individual to that one goal of existential realization. Nature is not separated from the human existence. Celebratory events developed by our realized ancestors (rishis) are in sync with the cycle of nature and aimed at developing and nurturing relationships with family, friends and neighbors. From these allegories developed the festivals and traditions to bring family and community together. Hindus celebrate major cosmic changes, such as the transmigration of the sun from one zodiac sign (Rashi) as Sankranti. Of the twelve sankrantis, Makara Sankranti on January 14th is the most significant; Makar Sankranti is celebrated in myriad ways. Usually there is an exchange of gifts with relatives. An exuberant celebration of peace and harmony! Prayers of thanks and gratitude are offered to the Sun for a good harvest. On this day, many pray to the deity of education (Saraswati) for clarity of mind. The festival highlights the importance of withdrawing from unethical and disturbing behavior. Kites are flown in many parts of the
subcontinent. Kite flying while lot of fun to young at heart, conveys a deeper message that God is the Sutradhara -holding the string of man. Tensions of push and pull (of life) allow the kite to fly higher. If He lets it loose, the kite cannot fly. No festival is complete without sweets. Sankranti sweets are made of sesame seed and sugar. They represent affection and sweetness. In India and around the world, Makar Sankranti is also known as Gupi, Lohri, Pongal, Thaipusam and by other names.
On this day, many pray to the deity of education (Saraswati) for clarity of mind. Akram Youth | 23
