What is dharma (Religion)?

Q

uestioner: What is religion? Every religious cult has explained it in different ways. Every person has different definition of religion, so what is religion, in fact? Pujyashri: To give even little happiness to others is religion, by giving slightest suffering to others is considered non-religion. By whatever method, if you are not hurting someone, or you are giving happiness, counts as religion. If you steal, thereby causing suffering to another; one person gets happiness but the other is unhappy, so that is non-religion. In case of doing charity you feel happy as well as the receiver also feels happy, so that is religion. When you tell lies and you get caught and feel hurt-that is nonreligion. But if you speak the truth, then both the persons are happy, so that is religion. Wherever you have caused suffering to others, all that is non-religion. Dadashri used to explain in one sentence: “You make a decision that with my mind, speech and action, I do not want to cause any type of suffering or unhappiness to anybody. Thus, the extract of all religions will be covered.” Certain group of people decide to do Puja (rituals) in a particular manner, of a certain God, they consider that as religion. Jain religion, Vaishnav religion, Swami Narayan religion, are all religions on large scale. How to avoid giving unhappiness to each other and how to liberate oneself from all sufferings are indicated by various paths. Beyond all these religions is what is known as Atma Dharma, which means self-realisation, that is to know your real self : who you are really Are you Manthan or is your name Manthan ? Questioner: My name is Manthan . Pujyashri: Who are you then? You are saying that your name is Manthan but then who are you ? That realization of the ‘self’ is Atma Dharma. Therein there is no good-bad. Only one has to remain in awareness of true spiritual knowledge. You have to realise the world in its true form and that is Atma Dharma. Akram Youth | 05

hile doing tilak (a dot on the forehead) Pankajbhai said, “Minakshi…. I am going to temple. Oh! Yes. Listen, around eight o'clock I will be back, keep breakfast ready, and don't forget to give me lemon pickle and papad in my tiffin. Just then Minakshiben remembered that there was no papad at home! She said, “Please listen… while returning home please bring papad, they just got over last evening.” 06 | December 2015

Pankajbhai got angry “Are you asking me to get papad? Why don't-you wake up your 'Prince' and send him. He is still in bed.” “It is all right, I'll bring it, ok! But please don't get angry. Your B.P. rises.” casually Minakshiben said, solving the issue. Since many years, every morning, going to the temple at seven o'clock is his daily routine. After reaching the temple he would do darshan, (worship) and then go outside on the small platform (otala) with some of his friends and sit and discuss the topics of the whole country, as if they were the whole world's advisory committee! At last addressing God with a big sigh, “Extreme 'kaliyug' has come. There is not a streak of mercy or religion left in this world!” As soon as Pankajbhai came home after such discussions of every day, he started, “Our Prince has not woken up yet?

From where are such lazy lumps born!” And he went straight to his son's bedroom and knocked the door loudly. Rubbing his eyes, his son Mihir opened the door, “What papa! I was having such a sound sleep!” “Is this the time to sleep?” He showed him the watch and said, “Look, it is eight-o'clock. That Rahul, son of Navneet bhai, reaches the temple everyday early in the morning and you like 'Kumbh karna' keep on sleeping.” Mihir grumbled, “What great benefit did he get after worshipping? Whole day he goes about getting irritated. Then, he calls himself a devotee after putting tilak and stuff! At that moment Minakshiben came from the kitchen, “Come on both of you, I have prepared hot poha!” On hearing this Pankaj bhai said, “Without bath not a morsel of food should be taken, that is what our religious scriptures say. Here, just on waking up, you straight have bed tea. Oh God! When will these people understand the value of our culture?” Without paying any attention to what he said, Mihir settled himself at the table. Pankajbhai started having breakfast grudging silently. After a few minutes the door bell rang. Minakshiben opened the door. “Oh! Kanchanben! Please come in and join us for breakfast.” Minakshiben welcomed her neighbor. “Oh! Good! I came at the correct time.” I have made this 'Khichu' (An Indian dish) and I thought that Mihir loves it, so I brought it. Mihir rushed to get the plate, “Wow! Kanchan aunty what a pleasant surprise.” Thank you very much. Your khichu is really awesome.” “Very good then, eat to your heart's content, It is less, please come and take some more. We'll meet afterwards

leisurely,” saying this, Kanchan aunty left. Mihir said “Mummy, I don't want to eat this Poha. I will eat Khichu only.” Suppressed anger of Pankajbhai burst out. “Will you leave this plate like this? Minakshi don't give him that khichu. Let him finish this breakfast first, only then he will get khichu. I don't like anybody leaving food in their plate.” Mihir got up angrily. “Papa in every matter you are nagging – I don't want to eat. I am so fed up of your nagging. To live in a hostel is far better than this. Instead of listening to your grumbling every day, there will be peace there.” Trying to turn the situation Minakshiben said, “Listen, I will eat the breakfast left in Mihir's plate so there is no wastage of food. Ok. Now! Come on Mihir please eat khichu. It is not good to get angry over breakfast. Pankajbhai bowed down his head on the photo of God as if he was banging it and left for the office. Minakshiben rushed behind him saying, “He is our child. I will explain to him; you do not get tensed up. Go to the office with a smile, a grumpy face does not look good. OK? Jay shree Krishna.” On the other hand, Mihir started thinking, “During whole day while doing household work, how much mummy is letting go! She is taking so many adjustments. Since so many years papa has been going to the temple, worshiping and doing bhakti, still he is always irritated and angry the whole day. While Mummy hardly gets time to go to the temple, her whole day passes in doing household work and taking care of all the members of the family. Even then she has no complaints for any one. Who has achieved the essence of true religion?”

Let us see what Dadashri says about this... Akram Youth | 07

Gnani’s Scientific Solutions

T

hat which is result oriented is called religion (dharma). That which does not bring forth any result is not religion at all (adharma). What should be the result? Religion decreases one’s kashayas (inner weaknesses such as anger, greed, deceit, and pride). They become lighter, lesser and ultimately they disappear. A person’s inner energy and bliss increases once these kashays start to diminish. One becomes aware of the amazing inner strength. Aha! Where did it 08 | December 2015

come from? That resultant effect is called dharma (religion). Blind following of religious practices and rituals will not bring-forth the result. When one does not have any artadhyan (adverse internal meditation that hurts the self) or raudradhyan (adverse internal meditation that hurts others) he is said to have attained essence of religion (dharmasaar). A person can eat, drink, go out, do business or anything else, but as long as he has no resultant artadhyan or raudradhyan, it is considered to have achieved dharmasaar. Even if they have decreased to an extent, then we may accept he is on the right path or religion (dharma). However, if they have not decreased at all, and on the contrary occur more frequently, it would not be correct to say that he is in religion, regardless of faith he believes, be it Jain or Vaishnav. If you do not learn anything else in worldly life it does not matter, but learning to adjust, is a necessity. Taking adjustment with each and every person, having different types of habits or prakriti, is the highest form of religion. Therefore, our perception is to see convenience in inconvenience. No one knows really how to live a conflict-free life. They do not know the basics but are pushed into routine life. They get married, raise a family but don’t have the knack how to live happily! You should live life in such a way that it would make your family happy. Each morning you should all make a firm determination not to enter into any conflict with anyone.

Spiritual

Once it happened that there was a terrace party going on in a big high rise building (50 storeys high). Residents of the building were enjoying annual get together amidst music and food fiesta. All of a sudden there was a sharp yell, a young man rushed to a person dancing madly and said... “Dr. Paresh, your daughter ran away with his college boy friend!!” There was a moment of sudden silence. On hearing this, the person, was so much grief stricken that he saw no point in living anymore. He rushed to the corner of the terrace and jumped from the roof to end his life. While going down, as he reached floor 40, he suddenly realized he had no daughter. As he reached floor 30, he realized he was not even married. As he reached floor 20, he realized that he was not even a doctor.

16 | December 2015

As he reached floor 10, he realized that his name was not Paresh... He was someone else... Finally he did hit upon the ground floor beneath and his head was severely injured causing an abrupt end to his life. This joke was shared by Pujyashree few months back in a Satsang. Well, this is a wonderful lesson for everyone. This is something which happens to us every day, every moment. All the time we ‘respond’ to situations believing it is happening with us. Whereas the fact is that it has nothing to do with us. That I am Mr. X or Y, that I am a Doctor or an Engineer, that I am Jain or Christian, that I am Indian or European etc. all are our beliefs. These are beliefs just for execution of our worldly desires and duties. From within we are ‘pure soul’ Unembodied-(Amurt swarup). All these outer layers in form of our beliefs need to be pierced so that we realize real self free from the encumbrances of relative self.

Humour Dr. Paresh, your daughter ran away with his college boy friend

Dhyan

A Result

'Dhyan' is the resultant output, the net result of one's being in his original dharma or virtue. This state varies according to the evolution and understanding of intrinsic properties possessed by living beings. As a human being we are exposed to 4 types 'dhyan' that determines our state of being at a particular point in time and road map for our future births. They are:

Artadhyan

When a person is constantly in distress and sufferings through fear, worries or anxieties is believed to be in a state of Artadhyan. This person is not hurting any other living being in particular but he himself is in distress. Parents worrying about the marriage of their daughters, wishing departure of unwanted guests, feeling internally agitated in any event are few examples of the people living in artadhyan. Wishing good gatherings to last longer is also a subtle form of artadhyan. The net consequence of artadhyan is next life in animal kingdom.

18 | December 2015

Raudra-dhyan

Shukla-dhyan

Getting angry, cursing, quarrelling, cheating causing loss to people are referred to be state of raudra-dhyan. For example a cloth merchant hyper stretches a fabric while measuring when selling it to a customer resulting him in gaining illegitimate profits is considered to be raudra-dhyan. Adulteration of foods or weighing it less, wishing bad for someone in jealousy, arrogant dealings with under-hands , act of violence, abusing are all situations where one is found in a state of raudra-dhyan. To sum up any act or deed through mind, speech or body that directly or indirectly meant to hurt anyone can be called raudra-dhyan. The net consequence of raudra-dhyan is next life in hell.

This is the top quality state of being one can long for. Self realization or the direct experience of the soul, the divine or the Supreme are all referred to one being in a state of shukla-dhyan. This can further be catagorized with reference to milestones achieved on this journey. In the first stage there is a vague and indistinct experience about soul and its existence (samyakdarshan). In the second stage there is a constant, clear and distinct experience of the soul (atma-gnan). In the 3rd stage one is fully aware of all cosmic activities and science relating governing its' existence (Kevalgnan)- the stage of the fully enlightened being. The fourth and final stage is merging into the existence or the Absolute.(Nirvana into Sidh-kshtra free from interference with other eternal elements.) Just to illustrate, suppose one is in a dark room and cannot see anything, but can feel coolness because of an Ice block kept in a corner. This is first stage of shulka dhyan- indistinct experience. Then with light approaching, he sees the ice block clearly – 2nd stage or direct experience. In the 3rd phase he touches it and feels it from every nook and corner resulting in knowing it completely. In the 4th & final phase there is no duality anymore. The light vanishing unto light. The net consequence of Shukla-dhyan is liberation, Samadhi avastha, moksha.

Dharma-dhyan This state is absence of worries and all internal conflicts. Such a person is fearless, non-violent, acts with patience, peace loving, wishing well being of others, lives without grudges or complains and do not land in conflicts. Percentage wise very few people can fall under this bracket in this kaliyug (dark age). The net consequence of dharma -dhyan is to be born as a celestial being. But if there is dharma dhyan coupled with artadhyan, then one may be born as a human.
