AKRON SOCCER SUCCESS

IN THE NCAA • Since 2006, The University of Akron men’s soccer program has posted the highest winning percentage in the nation (.841) with an overall record of 90-13-10, heading into the 2011 campaign. NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Win. % From 2006-2010 Rank School Record Winning % 1. Akron 90-13-10 .841 2. Wake Forest 70-16-15 .780 3. Monmouth 70-16-15 .767 4. Maryland 83-23-9 .761 5. Creighton 61-19-17 .716 Connecticut 64-21-19 .716 7. SMU 62-23-12 .704 8. Brown 58-21-14 .699 9. UC Santa Barbara 71-28-15 .689 10. Virginia 70-30-10 .682 • UA has accomplished this despite playing the toughest competition in the country. In fact, the Zips have recorded a top-10 RPI in each of the past four seasons, including the No. 1-ranked RPI in the final regular-season release in 2009 and the No. 1-ranked non-conference RPI in 2010. • The Zips have advanced to the national championship game in each of the past two seasons (2009 and 2010) and captured the first team national championship in school history for any sport last December with a 1-0 victory over Louisville in Santa Barbara, Calf. • UA has made four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2007-’10), earning a first-round bye each season. The Zips have advanced to the Round of 16 in each of the last three years. • Akron is the only program in the nation to finish the year ranked in the top five for both scoring offense and goals-against-average over the past two seasons. The Zips, who have led the nation in GAA in two of the past three years, were the second-highest scoring team in the country in 2009 (2.35 goals/game) and were ranked fifth in 2010 (2.56) despite scoring six more goals during their national championship campaign. • The Zips have assaulted the NCAA record book over the course of the past two seasons. Fueled by one of the greatest defensive seasons in college history, UA matched an NCAA record by posting a perfect 23-0-0 record heading into the College Cup in 2009 en route to its runner-up finish. Akron didn’t allow a single goal during the NCAA

Tournament that year and finished with 19 shutouts for the campaign, which represented the second-highest total all-time. Furthermore, its goals-against-average (0.27) and shutout percentage (.760) were ranked third-best in NCAA history. • Akron then matched another NCAA record by posting its 11th consecutive shutout in 2010, including notable clean-sheet victories against then-ranked No. 4 North Carolina (3-0), No. 3 Wake Forest (20) and No. 2 Tulsa (4-0). • With a 12-0-1 record at home in 2010, Akron matched an NCAA milestone for the longest home unbeaten streak. Since the start of the 2008 campaign, the Zips have gone 37-0-2 on their home field and will have an opportunity to snap the all-time mark against Cleveland State in the 2011 season opener on Aug. 27. • Akron has lost just once during the regular run of play since 2008, an incredible run spanning 50 matches. The Zips are 45-2-3 during that time (Per NCAA Championship game rules, UA’s 0-0 tie with Virginia in the 2009 final must be counted as a loss but did not come during the regular run of play. The Cavaliers defeated the Zips, 3-2, in penalties.)

2011 OUTLOOK

• The Zips have gone five years since their last defeat to a league member and will enter the 2011 campaign with the sixth-longest conference unbeaten streak (29 matches) in NCAA history. In fact, the last MAC school to defeat UA was Northern Illinois in a 1-0 setback in the 2006 MAC Tournament Championship game at DeKalb, Ill. Since then, Akron is 29-0-2 conference versus its brethren, including league tournament contests.

IN THE MLS DRAFT • History was made on Jan. 13 at the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft as seven members of the national champion University of Akron men’s soccer team had their names called – including five in the first round – at the Baltimore Convention Center. • UA landed five of the first eight picks of the draft to set an MLS standard for most first-round selections from a single school, surpassing Wake Forest’s previous mark of four in 2010. Moreover, with seven draftees on the day, Akron set another milestone for most selections by a team, which ironically had also previously belonged to the Demon Deacons, who had six players drafted in 2009. UA head coach Caleb Porter and his staff have now produced 12 MLS draft picks in the last four seasons, including eight players taken in the top 10. • Hermann Trophy winner and two-time NSCAA All-American Darlington Nagbe was the first of three straight UA selections on the day, going No. 2 overall to the expansion Portland Timbers. • A pair of standouts from the United States U-20 National Team followed with freshman midfielder Perry Kitchen (pictured above with MLS Commissioner Don Garber) going No. 3 to D.C. United and sophomore defender Zarek Valentin going No. 4 to Chivas USA. • A couple of picks separated another run of Akron players as 2010 Soccer America Player of the Year Kofi Sarkodie and All-Great Lakes Region standout Michael Nanchoff went in successive order at No. 7 and No. 8 to Houston and Vancouver, respectively. • The fun continued in round two as two instrumental seniors had their turn. Defender Chris Korb got the call first, becoming the second UA player to be drafted by D.C. United with the 31st overall pick. Midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong, the 2010 winner of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS award and two-time Hermann Trophy semifinalist, followed shortly after going two picks later to San Jose. • In all, 13 Akron players have been drafted by the MLS starting with Cameron Knowles, who was picked by Real Salt Lake in the 2005 supplemental draft. Sinisa Ubiparipovic, who was drafted by the New York Red Bulls in the third round of 2007, became the first UA player during the Porter era to get the call and paved the way for a flurry of selections that would follow. • Steve Zakuani became the first Akron player to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick of the draft (Seattle Sounders) in 2009. UA remains one of just eight schools to have recorded the top overall selection since the creation of the draft in 1996. Teal Bunbury, the 2009 Hermann Trophy winner, would be one of three Zips taken the following year when Sporting Kansas City made the athletic striker with Canadian roots the No. 4 pick overall. Adding to the list that season were teammates Blair Gavin (No. 10) and Ben Zemanski (No. 47), who were each drafted by Chivas USA.

n five years, Caleb Porter, the NCAA’s winningest active coach, has orchestrated a transformation at The University of Akron that has seen the Zips become the standard for all college soccer programs, culminating with the school’s first team national championship in any sport in 2010. Porter, who owns a career mark of 90-13-10 (.841) since becoming the sixth head coach in Akron history in 2006, has incorporated a brand of play that is attractive and attack-oriented, yet effective on both sides of the ball. While defensive efficiency has been the hallmark of Porter’s teams at UA - the Zips have led the nation in goals-against-average in two of the last three seasons - it has been this balanced and dominant style of soccer that has elevated the program to its lofty status. In fact, over the past two seasons, Akron is the only program in the nation to finish the year ranked in the top five for both scoring offense and goals-against-average. The Zips were the second-highest scoring team in the country in 2009 (2.35 goals/ game) and were ranked fifth in 2010 (2.56) despite scoring six more goals during their national championship campaign. This rare and dangerous combination has spurred UA, which has lost just once during the regular run of play over its last 50 matches. During that time, the Zips have posted an overall mark of 45-2-3 while becoming the first school to advance to the national championship game in back-to-back seasons since Indiana accomplished the feat in 2003 and 2004. For his efforts, Porter was rewarded with a 10-year contract extension last December that will keep him as the Zips’ head coach through the 2020 season. Akron kicked off the 2010 season with a bang, earning a pair of shutout victories at No. 4 North Carolina (3-0) and No. 3 Wake Forest (2-0) before matching an NCAA record with its 11th consecutive clean sheet in a 4-0 rout of No. 2 Tulsa in September before 4,744 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field. By running the table with a 13-0 record at home, the Zips matched another Division I milestone, extending its home unbeaten streak to 39 games (37-0-2). Fueled by one of the greatest defensive seasons in college history, Porter’s Zips matched another NCAA record by posting a perfect 23-0-0 record heading into the College Cup in 2009 en route to its runner-up finish. UA didn’t allow a single goal during the NCAA Tournament and finished with 19 shutouts for the year - representing the second-highest total all-time. Furthermore, it’s goals-against-average (0.27) and shutout percentage (.760) were ranked third all-time. In all, Porter has guided UA to five Mid-American Conference regular season championships, four consecutive MAC Tournament titles and to the NCAA Tournament each season since 2007. Akron advanced to the NCAA second round in 2007, the Round of 16 in 2008 and all the way to the national title game in 2009 and 2010. Leaving little doubt of its strength of schedule, Akron, which owns the highest winning percentage in the nation since 2005

(108-14-14; .846), established these milestones while playing the most difficult competition in college soccer with the No. 1-ranked RPI in the final regular-season release in 2009 and the No.1-ranked non-conference RPI in 2010. Porter, 36, was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009 and has won the MAC Coach of the Year award in each of the past four seasons (2010, 2009, 2008, 2007). He is also a three-time Division I All-Ohio Coach of the Year (2008, ‘09, ‘10). Well respected by his peers and known for his tactical insight and ability to recognize talent, Porter, who serves as a scout for the U.S. Soccer Academy, was selected to coach at the 2009 MLS Combine and will return for his third year as an assistant coach on the current United States U-18 National team in 2011. Under Porter’s watch, the Zips have produced a Hermann Trophy winner in each of the last two seasons - including Teal Bunbury, who became the first UA player to win the prestigious award in 2009, and 2010 winner Darlington Nagbe - and a finalist each year since 2008. Akron is just the fifth school in the history of the men’s player of the year award to record consecutive winners all-time and the first since Virginia in 1995-96. Moreover, 12 Zips have been selected in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft since 2006, including 10 in the last two seasons alone. History was made this January as Akron soccer became the focal point of the 2011 SuperDraft. In all, seven members of the national champion Zips squad had their names called, including five with the first eight picks. The five first-round selections set an MLS record as did the seven players taken overall. English-born striker Steve Zakuani, who led the nation with 20 goals as a sophomore in 2008, became the No. 1 overall selection of the draft (to Seattle) after just two years in Porter’s system. In that same mold, Bunbury was the country’s top goal scorer in 2009 as a sophomore with 17 goals and was selected with the No. 4 pick overall (Kansas City) in 2010. Nagbe was the first of three straight UA selections drafted this January, going No. 2 overall to the expansion Portland Timbers. Freshman midfielder Perry Kitchen (No. 3 to D.C. United) and sophomore defender Zarek Valentin (No. 4 to Chivas USA) would follow before another run of Zips that saw junior defender and Soccer America Player of the Year Kofi Sarkodie go to Houston with the No. 7 pick and junior midfielder Michael Nanchoff go to

United (No. 31 overall), senior midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong was taken by San Jose (No. 33) to push UA’s total number of draftees to seven; setting the MLS standard. In the past five seasons, the Zips have yielded eight All-Americans (Nagbe and Sarkodie in 2010; Ampaipitakwong, Bunbury and Nagbe in 2009; Zakuani and Ampaipitakwong in 2008; and Sinisa Ubiparipovic in 2006), nine freshman All-Americans (Kitchen and Darren Mattocks in 2010; David Meves, Chad Barson and Valentin in 2009; Nagbe and Sarkodie in 2008, Zakuani and Ampaipitakwong in 2007) and 24 NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region standouts. During that time, eight standouts have been signed to highly coveted Generation adidas contracts, including five signees in 2010, which represented another MLS record. UA has also produced 53 all-conference honorees since 2006, including 45 first teamers, and has captured the MAC Player of the Year award in each of Porter’s seasons at the helm (Nagbe in 2010; Bunbury in 2009; Zakuani in 2008; Sipos in 2007 and Ubiparipovic in 2006). In fact, the Zips have swept the league’s postseason awards in each of the past four seasons by claiming Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year (Mattocks in 2010; Valentin in 2009; Nagbe in 2008 and Zakuani in 2007) honors. Porter and his staff have also taken the recruitment game to an all new level at UA by securing top-five classes each year. After reeling in fifth-ranked classes in both 2007 and 2008, the

During the MLS offseason in 1998, Porter served as an undergraduate assistant coach at Indiana while finishing his degree. That season IU won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles en route to an NCAA Championship. From 2003-05, Porter has served as a coach and senior age group trainer with the Bloomington Cutters Soccer Club, winning an Under-18 Indiana state championship in 2004 and a U-19 state championship in 2005. Zips recorded the No. 1 class in the nation in 2009 and the No. 2 class in 2010. As a team, the Zips have been just as impressive in the classroom during Porter’s tenure. Akron was ranked eighth in the nation with a cumulative GPA of 3.33 for the 2009-10 academic year, highlighted by 10 players posting a GPA of 3.3 or better and five who earned a 3.8 or better. In all, seven Zips have been named to Academic All-America teams in five seasons under Porter while 16 have been named to the all-conference academic team. Headlining that list of Academic All-Americans in 2010 was Sarkodie, who became the first player in school history to earn Academic All-America of the Year honors with a 3.969 GPA as a biology major at UA. He was one of four players to land on the ESPN Academic All-America squad last season, which signified the most representatives by any single team in UA history. Furthermore, Ampaipitakwong, an ESPN Academic All-America Third Team honoree last season, was the recipient of the 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I men’s soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. Akron has also established Lee R. Jackson Soccer Field as one of the nation’s toughest places for opposing teams to play over the past few years with a sparkling 56-2-3 (.942) record in five seasons under Porter. As a result of the unprecedented success, excitement for Akron soccer has never been greater. After finishing seventh nationally for attendance in 2009, the Zips drew an average of 3,213 fans to the pitch in 2010, which was the second-highest figure in the country and represented an increase of more than 1,000 fans on average from the previous season. This out-pouring of support from the community led directly to the complete renovation of Lee R. Jackson Soccer Field during the summer of 2010 that included the installation of a new playing surface, a two-tiered grandstand with reserved chairback and bleacher-back seating, field lighting and team meetings rooms, among other amenities. Porter came to the Zips from Indiana where he spent six seasons as an assistant coach for the Hoosiers, four of which came under Hall of Fame head coach Jerry Yeagley, who is the alltime winningest coach in Division I history and a six-time national coach of the year honoree, and the last two under Mike Freitag. As Indiana’s recruiting coordinator, Porter helped compile a recruiting class that was rated No. 1 in the nation in 2005 by College Soccer News and StudentSportsSoccer.com. The talent he attracted to the Hoosiers included four national players of the year, 14 Youth National Team members, 18 All-Americans and 12 state players of the year. During his time as an assistant with IU, the Hoosiers won five Big Ten Conference championships and made six NCAA Tournament appearances - including four trips to the College Cup. Indiana won consecutive national championships in 2003 and in 2004. A 1998 graduate of Indiana with a degree in sports management, Porter was a four-year letterwinner in the midfield for the Hoosiers. He was just the second three-year captain in IU history and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate player. Porter’s Indiana teams won four Big Ten titles and made four NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the College Cup on two occasions. As a senior, Porter captained IU to an NCAA

No. 7 overall to Houston, and was followed by senior left back Chris Korb, who went No. 31 to D.C. United, leaving Porter and his staff with the daunting task of finding three new replacements. “We went really heavy on the recruitment of the back line,” Porter said. “The back line is an important part of any team and certainly an important part of our success the last several years.” For the first time in thee years, Porter will have to turn to some newcomers to help carry the torch. “We basically had the same back four intact for the last several years,” Porter said. “So we’ll have some new faces but we’re really excited about the group we have.” One major reason for that excitement is the return of 2011 team captain and Academic All-American Chad Barson. If anyone can relate to an incoming freshmen stepping into a starting role straight out of high school, it’s Barson, who was in that very position himself two years ago. Since arriving on campus in 2009, all Barson has done is start every game of his collegiate career and help lead the Zips to back-to-back NCAA finals appearances. Barson was a Freshman All-American in 2009 and an All-Mid-American Conference First Team honoree in 2010. “Chad is a two-year starter at central defender and helped us record 33 shutouts in his two years,” Porter said. “He has been one of our top defenders game in and game out and even though he doesn’t always get as much credit as he deserves, I wouldn’t trade him for any center back in the country.”

2010 REVIEW

DEFENDERS After recording two of the greatest defensive seasons in NCAA history in 2009 and 2010, it came as no surprise that the Zips’ back four was one of the hardest hit units when it came to the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft. Sophomore center back Zarek Valentin was the first to go, selected No. 4 overall by Chivas USA. Junior right back Kofi Sarkodie went next,

hile their brand of soccer will not be any different this season, the 2011 Zips will certainly have a different look on the field. What else would one expect after losing more than 60 percent of the team’s starters to the professional ranks following UA’s historic NCAA championship campaign of 2010? With an encouraging 1-1 draw against No. 10 Creighton in exhibition play, the 2011 Akron club put the finishing touches on an aggressive offseason spearheaded by head coach Caleb Porter that resulted in the influx of 15 new faces to the roster following a record-setting loss of seven to the Major League Soccer SuperDraft. “After finally accomplishing our ultimate vision of winning the national championship, we were only supposed to lose two players to graduation but ended up losing seven,” Porter said. “Those seven players were the most any team had ever lost to the MLS and that’s a positive thing for our program. But it also left a big void and meant that we had to go to work immediately if we wanted to stay at the standard we were at. We could have easily chalked this season up as a rebuilding year, but that’s not the way I’m wired and that’s not the way our players are wired.” The Zips, who captured the school’s first team national championship in any sport last December, incorporated a mix of Americans, Internationals and transfers to a core lineup that features four returning starters. Of those returners, three – juniors Chad Barson, Scott Caldwell and David Meves – had experienced UA’s back-to-back College Cup final run while sophomore Darren Mattocks, a Freshman All-American in 2010, returns after netting 18 goals (the third-highest total in the country) a year ago. “We have four returning players who played key roles in us winning the national championship last season,” Porter said. “And those four players are as good as any in the country and are the backbone of our team.”

2011 SEASON PREVIEW Much like Barson did his first season, a number of first-year players are expected to make an immediate impact on the Zips’ back line in 2011, including Bryan Gallego, David Mayer and DeAndre Yedlin. Gallego, who brings a wealth of experience despite his youth, will compete for the center back spot next to Barson. “Bryan is a tremendous young player,” Porter said. “I’ve had the pleasure to work with him while with the U-18 U.S. national team. He was also with me recently in Northern Ireland at the Milk Cup where he started and played 90 minutes in every game. Not only is Bryan a good defender, but he’s a good player on the ball and can initiate the attack. He’s also very composed mentally and is a good leader.” Senior Matt Dagilis, who started all 23 games as a redshirt freshman in 2008, and Loyola University Chicago transfer Kayvon Afsarifard will also contend at center back. “Matt has been an off-and-on starter for us during his career,” Porter said. “He’s a senior and comes with a lot of experience. He brings a strong physical presence and is good in the air. Kayvon is still a developmental player but will also be in the mix.” Mayer and Yedlin will likely get first shot at the outside back positions. Mayer is a product of the famed Wigan Youth Academy in England while Yedlin, a native of Seattle, Wash., is member of the Seattle Sounders Academy. “David is a very clean player who can serve the ball and is a solid defender,” Porter said. “He’s young but is also very experienced. DeAndre is an athletic player who comes with a lot of experience as well, having also been with the U-18 U.S. national team.” Sophomore Reinaldo Brenes and newcomer Cristian Arboleda also figure to contend for playing time at one of the outside back positions. “Reinaldo is a well-rounded player,” Porter said. “Not only is he tough, but he’s good on the ball. He didn’t play a ton last year but I think fans are going to be really impressed with the progress he’s made this year.” Arboleda, a Colombian native, gives the Zips a little different look with his unique skill set. “Cristian is an extremely technical outside back,” Porter said. “He’s not your typical back in that he’s got extremely soft feet and can step into the attack and really create some problems. With the roles we have our outside backs play, that’s important.” GOALKEEPERS While there will be plenty of new faces on the back line, Porter will have the comfort of having a familiar one between the pipes once again this season. Starting goalkeeper David Meves returns after starting every game of his collegiate career and with a number of school records under his belt. Meves, a 2011 College Soccer News Preseason All-American, is the Zips’ single-season leader in GAA (0.28 in 2009) and shutouts (17, also in 2009), and is steadily climbing the school’s all-time lists. “David is a two-year starter in goal and one of the best keepers in the nation,” Porter said. “He has worked very hard this offseason to become an even more dominant presence physically and vocally in commanding his box. I’m pleased to see him take his game to another level over the summer and it’s showing in his play so far.” Pushing Meves this season will be a host of netminders, including returners Anthony Ponikvar and Andrian McAdams, and newcomers JP van de Merwe and Jake Fenlason. MIDFIELDERS Much like the back line, Akron’s midfield took a significant hit when Major League Soccer came calling last January. Gone was freshman Perry Kitchen with the No. 3 overall pick to D.C. United. Junior Michael Nanchoff then went to the Vancouver Whitecaps at pick No. 8 before San Jose made senior Anthony Ampaipitakwong their top choice in the second round. While the Zips played four midfielders in 2010, that may or may not be the case this fall so filling those vacancies and adding depth to the position became paramount during the offseason. “This year we may play three, four or five midfielders, depending on our shape and system,” Porter said. No matter how many midfielders take the pitch for the Zips, two things are for certain: With 11 midfielders on the roster, the competition for playing time will be intense and junior Scott Caldwell – a team captain – will be a mainstay.

Porter and the Zips will attempt to become just the fifth team in NCAA history to win back-to-back championships this fall. Caldwell instantly earned his spot in the hearts of Zips’ fans by netting the game-winner in the NCAA National Championship game last December. While Caldwell may have made a name for himself on the national scene with that single shot, his heroics came as no surprise to the people who have seen him on an everyday basis. “Scott Caldwell was one of the most underrated players on our team last year and really hit his stride at the end of the season,” Porter said. “He is, in my opinion, one of the top midfielders in the country.” The native of Braintree, Mass., became a full-time starter early in the season and never looked back. Displaying a flair for dramatics, all five of his career goals came during the Zips’ postseason run through the Mid-American Conference and NCAA Tournaments. Another central figure to Akron’s plans at midfield will be senior Michael Balogun. Balogun appeared in 18 games last year, including four starts in place of then-injured Sarkodie at right back, after transferring from Cal State Fullerton. “Michael’s had a great offseason,” Porter said. “He’s a tough, athletic player who has really matured in a lot of ways to the point that I feel he’s going to be a key player for us; likely as a holding midfielder.” If Porter decides to go with two holding mids, freshman Wil Trapp, the NSCAA National High School Player of the Year, will get the call. The native of Gahanna, Ohio, is another young player on the Zips’ roster that is mature beyond his years. Trapp is the fifth-ranked recruit in the nation, according to Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News, a member of the U.S. U-18 men’s national team and a two-time Columbus Crew Academy Player of the Year (2009, 2010). “Wil is a very technical midfielder who reminds me a lot of Blair Gavin (a 2009 MLS draft pick of Chivas USA),” Porter said. “He’s a rhythm player, a possession player, and I think a lot of our build up will go through him.” A trio of transfers – senior Luke Holmes, and sophomores Aodhan Quinn and Zac Portillos – will also factor heavily into the Zips’ rotation at midfield. Holmes comes to Akron as the reigning NAIA National Player of the Year after transferring from Notre Dame College. The native of Oldham, England, led the Blue Falcons to their first national championship with a 23-0-1 record last fall. “Luke Holmes joined us in the spring so he’s not completely new to us but he will be new to our fans this fall,” Porter said. “He’s a goal scorer with more than 70 goals over his three-year career at Notre Dame College. He’s also a versatile player who can play the attacking mid position or go up top and will have a major impact.” Holmes, who finished third in the country with 24 goals scored last year, scored five times and added two assists in five games during the national tournament en route to being named the National Tournament

FORWARDS If recent history is any indication, the Zips’ striker position may be the most prestigious on the team after having produced a Hermann Trophy finalist in each of the past three seasons and consecutive winners in the last two. After Steve Zakuani opened the door in 2008 with a runner-up finish, Teal Bunbury and Darlington Nagbe went back-to-back to further establish Akron’s image as a national soccer powerhouse.

SCHEDULE Ten home games, including visits from three Big Ten Schools, Wake Forest, New Mexico, and a season opener against Cleveland State with historic implications, highlight the fall schedule. Additionally, the Zips will make two trips to the state of California, host the annual University of Akron Tournament and play Michigan, UC Santa Barbara, Tulsa and St. Louis in enemy territory in 2011. In all, UA will face seven opponents who competed in last season’s NCAA Tournament and four who advanced to the Round of 16 or beyond. “This is one of the toughest schedules we have ever had and it will be quite challenging,” Porter said. “That’s what top players want though, and that is what we need in order to continue moving forward as a program.” Three Sweet 16 qualifiers from a year ago are on UA’s home schedule, including Ohio State (Sept. 28), Penn State (Oct. 12) and Michigan State (Nov. 2). Additionally, a much-anticipated rematch of last season’s NCAA semifinal game against Michigan will take place in Ann Arbor on Oct. 18, while a late-season contest against Wake Forest (Oct. 29) will represent just the third time UA has hosted an ACC school and the first time since 1993. The Demon Deacons, who have qualified for the NCAA Tournament 14 times since 1980, advanced to four straight College Cups from 2006-09 and won the national championship in 2007. “To win a national championship and to develop professional players, every game is of the utmost importance,” Porter said. “It’s about growth; and for us to grow individually and collectively, we need as many quality matches as possible. “We cannot lose in the long run with this approach, but it might mean our short-term results fall short. If so, I’m okay with that because I know when we get into the tournament, we will be battle tested and I also know it’s what the players need to make it at the next level. This philosophy has worked well and we will continue to play the ideal teams we can find. This new group is extremely excited and hungry to leave their legacy this fall.”

MVP. Holmes also played for the prestigious Manchester City FC’s youth academy from 1997-2001. Like Holmes, Quinn and Portillos will be new to the Zips’ attack but bring with them a veteran presence. Quinn, a Freshman All-American at Bradley and the son of former U.S. National Team veteran Brian Quinn, finished 12th in the nation with 10 assists and was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference Team in 2010. “Aodhan is a pretty special player and in time I think he’s going to be one of the top midfielders in the country,” Porter said. “He’s left-sided, similar to Michael Nanchoff, and is a very clever, crafty player and a good passer who can score goals. He’s the type of player who is always looking to play the killer pass.” Portillos comes to UA via the University of Washington where he was named the Huskies’ Rookie of the Year after appearing in 17 games, including 13 starts. The native of Aurora, Colo., finished the year with two goals and an assist. “Zac is a worker,” Porter said. “He’s a player who can beat you off the dribble. He’s left-sided, is a great server of the ball and makes things happen. Sophomore Eric Stevenson, who started and scored the game-winner in the first match of the season last year at North Carolina, has had a strong preseason and – along with Brenes – could push for some significant playing time. Last season, Stevenson, a native of Columbus, Ohio, appeared in 13 games and finished with two assists. “Eric has matured a lot during his time here,” Porter said. “He has always been an extremely talented and technical player with a lot of potential. He is finally playing with more toughness and confidence mentally and it’s showing in his consistent performance and impact on the game.” Four freshmen will also be in the mix, including Akeil Barrett, Dominic Bonilla, Andy Chiu and David Murrow. Depending on the system, the versatile Barrett may also push to start up top.

AKRON SOCCER

Due in large part to the AK-Rowdies, the Zips’ student cheering section, FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field was named the fourth-most exciting college soccer venue by College Soccer News this summer.

Returning striker Darren Mattocks will be looking to continue that trend after being named to Freshman All-American teams by numerous national publications and winning the Mid-American Conference’s Newcomer of the Year award. “Darren is going to be our key guy, the one who spearheads us,” Porter said. “He was our leading scorer last year with 18 goals as a freshman. He returns as – without question – one of the most lethal strikers in the country.” Mattocks, a native of Portmore, Jamaica, was the second-highest scoring freshman in the nation and started all but one contest a year ago. Six of his goals were game-winners, including decisive blows against Indiana in the Round of 16 and Buffalo in the MAC semifinals. Depending on UA’s shape, Porter may utilize 2 or 3 strikers at once this season with a number of qualified candidates ready to answer the call. Options up top include Barrett, junior Thomas Schmitt, who appeared in 15 games last season, Stevenson, Portillos and possibly Holmes. “Akeil is a very skillful, creative player, who can break the game open at any given moment,” Porter said. “He’s got electric pace and brings penetration that is very important. We have a lot of players who are good technical playmakers, but Akeil is a guy who can open the game up.” Schmitt, who can play up top, wide or attacking mid, scored his first career goal in UA’s 7-1 rout of Michigan during the regular season. “Tommy has a knack for scoring goals and is very good around the box,” Porter said. “He is proving to be more and more consistent as the years go on and he should factor into a major role this fall either as a starter or off the bench.” Aside from Mattocks, there may be more questions than answers at the forward position to start the season. But it’s a good problem to have given the amount of talent up top. “There are a lot of options but this position – perhaps more than any of the others – will take time to figure out which players will start and which will come off the bench,” Porter said. “It may change from week to week until we settle on a set lineup that we’re happy with. “The nice thing is, we have quite a bit of diversity with each player and what they bring to the table. Ultimately, it will all come down to the system we use and what we need in each game and then from there, we have to figure out what pieces fit together best. The chemistry of the overall group will determine a lot in our individual selections on personnel.”

ZIPS READY TO DEFEND TITLE • Akron will attempt to become just the fifth school in NCAA Men’s Soccer Division I history to win consecutive national championships this season. Indiana, with current UA head coach Caleb Porter on staff as an assistant, was the last to do it in 2003 and 2004. Virginia, San Francisco and St. Louis are the three others. • Just two schools (Indiana and Virginia) have won back-to-back championships in the last 35 years of Division I men’s soccer. The Hoosiers accomplished the feat three times (2003-’04, 1998-’99 and 1982-’83) while the Cavaliers won four straight titles from 1991-’94. Men’s Soccer All-Time Consecutive Championship Seasons No. School From 4 St. Louis 1972-’73, 1969-’70, 1962-’63, 1959-’60 3 Indiana 2003-’04, 1998-’99, 1982-’83 1 San Francisco 1975-’76 1 Virginia 1991-’94 • The Zips will begin their title defense with four returning starters and 15 newcomers, including four transfers and 11 incoming freshmen, in the mix. As a group, UA’s 2011 recruiting class – which features NSCAA High School National Player of the Year Wil Trapp and NAIA National Player of the Year Luke Holmes – was ranked No. 2 in the nation, according to College Soccer News. • All four returning starters have played significant roles in the Zips’ rise to the nation’s elite. Juniors Chad Barson, an Academic All-American in 2010, and David Meves, a College Soccer News Preseason AllAmerican in 2011, have started every game of their collegiate careers. Barson recorded two goals and an assist from his center back position while Meves was ninth in the nation with a goals-against-average of 0.64 with more than 2,233 minutes in net. • Junior midfielder Scott Caldwell, who netted the game-winner in last year’s NCAA championship game, started 21 games for the Zips last season and scored all five career goals during the MAC and NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Darren Mattocks, a Freshman All-American last fall, returns up top after finishing third in the nation with 18 goals, just two behind the nation’s leader Corey Hertzog, who found the net 20 times for Penn State. RECORD WATCH • With a 12-0-1 record at home in 2010, Akron matched an NCAA milestone for the longest home unbeaten streak (39 games). Since the start of the 2008 campaign, the Zips have gone 37-0-2 on their home field and will have an opportunity to snap the all-time mark against Cleveland State in the 2011 season opener on Aug. 27. • The only two schools to escape FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field without a loss during the Zips’ historic streak are California (3-3 draw in last season’s NCAA quarterfinals) and Hartwick (1-1 draw in the MAC Tournament semifinals in 2008). Coincidentally, Akron defeated both opponents in penalty kicks to advance.

• But UA’s home unbeaten streak is not the only streak to track this season as the Zips have gone five years since their last defeat to a MAC school. As a result, UA will enter the 2011 campaign with the sixth-longest conference unbeaten streak (29 matches) in NCAA history. In fact, the last MAC school to defeat UA was Northern Illinois in a 1-0 setback in the 2006 MAC Tournament Championship game at DeKalb, Ill. Since then, Akron is 29-0-2 versus its conference brethren, including league tournament contests. It will be the second straight season FOX Soccer Channel has picked up the Zips after also broadcasting a 4-0 victory over visiting Tulsa last fall. • In addition to being broadcast on 1350 AM, Akron’s NCAA semifinal rematch at Michigan on Oct. 18 was recently picked up by the Big Ten Network. The Zips and Wolverines will kick off at 7:30 p.m. (ET). DID YOU KNOW? • Since 2006, The University of Akron men’s soccer program has posted the highest winning percentage in the nation (.841) with an overall record of 90-13-10, heading into the 2011 campaign. Wake Forest is second with a mark of 70-16-15 (.780). • The Zips have been defeated just once during the regular run of play in its last 50 matches, dating back to the 2008 season. • Since head coach Caleb Porter took over in 2006, Akron has posted a 26-1-1 (.946) record in the Mid-American Conference while capturing five consecutive MAC regular season championships and the last four MAC Tournament titles. • The Zips posted a team GPA of 3.45 for the 2010-11 academic year after ranking eighth in the nation in 2009-10 with a collective GPA of 3.33.

Moreover, of those seven draftees, five were underclassmen, including freshman Perry Kitchen (No. 3 overall to D.C. United) and sophomore Zarek Valentin (No. 4 to Chivas USA). • UA kicked off the 2010 season with a bang, earning a pair of shutout victories at No. • After a 2-2 draw at Ohio State on Sept. 29, the Zips ran off eight straight victories, including a 7-1 rout of eventual College Cup foe Michigan and a 1-0 decision over then-ranked No. 9 Creighton. An unforeseen 2-1 setback at Cleveland State followed on Sept. 30 but – in hindsight – may have been the best thing to happen to the Zips as UA heeded the wake-up call and didn’t lose again. • The Zips made short work of Buffalo (3-1) and Western Michigan (4-0) in the MAC Tournament en route to their fourth consecutive league championship after also claiming their fourth straight, regular-season title with a perfect 6-0 record against the conference. • As the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, UA earned hardfought victories against West Virginia (3-2) in the second round abd Indiana (2-1) in the third round before defeating California 3-2 in penalty kicks after playing to a 3-all tie. • The Zips then came from behind to defeat Michigan 2-1 in the NCAA semifinal at Santa Barbara, Calif., on a game-winning header by Kofi Sarkodie in the 74th minute and won the national championship in similar dramatic fashion in a 1-0 nail biter against top-seeded Louisville, which was coached by former long-time UA head coach Ken Lolla. • The Zips and Cardinals played to a scoreless tie at the half and may have gone to overtime had it not been for Scott Caldwell’s game-winning strike that found the upper right-hand corner of the net in the 79th minute after an Akron corner kick. A frantic final minute followed that included a pair of saves from goalkeeper David Meves and an opennetted team save by defender Chad Barson as the final seconds ticked away.

SEASON OUTLOOK

2010 IN REVIEW • With a 1-0 victory over Louisville in the NCAA College Cup final last December in Santa Barbara, Calif., the Zips captured the school’s first team national championship in any sport. • It was the second straight season Akron advanced to the national championship game following a runner-up finish to Virginia in 2009. UA was the first school to make consecutive finals appearances since Indiana won back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004. The Cavaliers, who won four straight NCAA crowns in the early 90s, are the last school to record more than two consecutive title game appearances. • The Zips won just the third team national championship in MidAmerican Conference history and first since Western Michigan’s cross country team won back-to-back titles in 1964 and 1965. Bowling Green’s ice hockey program, which competes in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, won a national championship in 1984. • In all, Akron finished with a 22-1-2 overall record, won both the MAC regular-season and tournament titles for the fourth straight year and tied an NCAA record for the longest consecutive game shutout streak (11). • Following its championship season, the Zips reeled in an impressive haul of individual accolades. Junior striker Darlington Nagbe headlined that list by winning UA’s second consecutive Hermann Trophy award, which is presented annually by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) to the best player in college soccer. • Nagbe was also one of two Zips named to the NSCAA All-America First Team, joining junior defender Kofi Sarkodie, who was also tabbed Soccer America’s Player of the Year. • The honors continued for Sarkodie, who was one of four UA stars to be named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-America Team. Sarkodie, a First Team honoree, became the first UA student-athlete to earn Academic All-American of the Year honors from the organization. Current juniors Chad Barson and David Meves were named to the second team while departed senior Anthony Ampaipitakwong earned third-team recognition. • Akron then broke a Major League Soccer record with seven SuperDraft selections, including five in the top eight picks, last January.
