What is a Zip? One of the unique nicknames in all of intercollegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron. Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twenty-five years earlier a campuswide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for The University’s athletics teams. Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953.

THe UNIVERSITY OF AKRON 2010-11 MEN’S GOLF Athletic and Academic support | welcome to Akron GOLF James P. and Gail (Andrews) McCready believe in the value of athletic competition and the potential it has to positively shape the lives of student-athletes through the valuable lessons it offers. As testimony to this, in 1993 the McCreadys’ established The McCready Family Golf Scholarship to benefit The University of Akron golf program with a pledge of $100,000. In addition to their scholarship, the McCready’s to date have made gifts totaling over $200,000 in support of Zips golfers. But their influence on the golf program does not end there. A master at recognizing potential, Mr. McCready’s business achievements are numerous. A 1965 graduate from The University of Akron, earning an MBA from UA in 1969, McCready took his talent of tapping potential and rose steadily through the ranks of the Brelin Group. After joining the company in 1976, McCready became its president in 1983. Following the breakup of the company in 1995, he formed the Cypress Companies, comprised of Ausco Products in Michigan, Prior Gaskets in Texas, Riker Products of Ohio and Tredit Tire and Wheel of Indiana. In honor of his corporate achievements, McCready was presented with the prestigious Frank L. Simonetti Distinguished Business Alumni Award in 1987 and is a member of the board of the College of Business Institute for Global Business. The McCreadys are active in the Bridgestone Invitational, the Great Trail Council Gail and Jim McCready are two of the many benefactors to the Akron golf program. of the Boy Scouts and the Akron Rotary Club. Both Jim and Gail are avid golfers. During his undergraduate years, Mr. McCready was a member of the Zips golf team and the same competitive fire he had then controls his golf game to this day. Recognized for Meritorious Service by the Varsity “A” Association, he has been club champion at Portage Country Club eight times, more than any other member in club history. “The game of golf develops character,” McCready said. “If a kid likes to golf, you can leave him at the golf course and know he’s not going to get in trouble. I started hanging around the golf course when I was 12 and that’s where I developed the work ethic I needed later in life. Hanging around a golf course, you see what it takes to be successful.”

Endowed Scholarships Akron Golf Charities, Inc.

Wentz-Wallace

Akron Golf Charities, Inc., established this endowed scholarship in 1987 with proceeds from the Bridgestone Invitational. It provides tuition assistance to deserving undergraduates participating in the intercollegiate golf program. Selection of the recipients is determined by the University Scholarship Committee upon recommendation of the head coach.

Established in 1975 by Wade Wallace and the Northern Ohio Professional Golfers Association, this fund provides athletic golf awards to students selected by the director of athletics of The University or such person as the director may appoint. Selection is made from qualified applicants from the northern Ohio area.

George J. Myers James P. McCready Family Foundation Established in 1988 by the James P. McCready Family Foundation, this fund provides tuition aide for undergraduate students who are members of The University of Akron golf team. A former UA golfer, it is Mr. McCready’s intention to provide assistance for those who are earning a college degree while representing The University’s intercollegiate golf program. The selection of scholarship recipients from funds generated annually from this endowment will be made by the head coach.

Former University of Akron studentathlete George Myers, class of 1934, established this scholarship to benefit a member of The University’s golf team. An avid golfer himself, who still places a high premium on physical fitness, Mr. Myers always has had an appreciation for the education provided by The University of Akron and for the lessons learned through athletic competition. It is his desire that the recipient of this annual award have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and be a young man of strong morals and solid citizenship, qualities which are held in high regard by Mr. Myers.

THe UNIVERSITY OF AKRON 2010-11 MEN’S GOLF Welcome to Akron Golf | 2010-11 schedule The North and West Courses at the world-renowned Firestone Country Club serve as the home courses for The University of Akron men’s golf team. The North Course opened in 1969 and has been rated by Golf Digest as one of Ohio’s top-10 courses. Firestone Country Club, opened for play in 1929, was created by Harvey S. Firestone to serve as a recreational park for employees of the Akron-based Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, which he founded. The original links of the South Course were designed by the late Bert Way. Professional golf first visited the Akron area in 1953, when the Rubber City Open was played at Breathnach Country Club in Cuyahoga Falls. The event moved to Firestone in 1954 as a fully-sanctioned tournament and continued through 1959. The PGA Championship was awarded to Akron in 1960, and to provide a worthy test, architect Robert Trent Jones was hired to bring the course, which was then a 6,585-yard par-72, up to true championship standards. When Jones was finished adding 50 bunkers and two new ponds, the new card listed 7,189 yards and a par 70. The success of the PGA Championship in Akron led to a new event, the American Golf Classic, which began in 1961 and was played annually through 1976. The PGA Championship returned to the South Course in 1966 and again in 1975, making Firestone the first club to host this championship three times. Since 1962, Firestone’s South Course has been the site for the annual World Series of Golf, a major event on the PGA Tour. For 14 years, the event brought together the winner of the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and the PGA Championship for a tworound, 36-hole television competition. In succeeding years, Firestone played host to many other competitions, including the CBS Golf Classic and Big Three Golf. The World Series of Golf was expanded in 1976 and offered the world of professional golf an international championship in which all the participants had won at least one tournament in the past year. In 1984, NEC Corporation became the event’s title sponsor. The PGA’s World Golf Championships NEC Invitational debuted at Firestone Country Club in August 1999, replacing the World Series of Golf. This tournament is part of a World Golf Championship series, and features the game’s foremost players. Tiger Woods has won the event four times since 2001 and has never finished lower than fourth place. The course also played host to the 2002 Senior PGA Championship. In 2001, the West Course was renovated by renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio, making Firestone Country Club the finest 54-hole golf facility in the world.

THe UNIVERSITY OF AKRON 2010-11 MEN’S GOLF Welcome to Akron Golf | State-of-the-Art Training facilities The indoor golf facility is one of the finest in the Midwest. In order to assist with each student-athlete’s play on the course, the indoor golf facility features a putting green, bunker and a video motion analysis system. In addition to helping the players perform on the course, the golf facility also features offices for the coaching staff and a study lounge to help classroom performance. The biggest advantage the facility gives the golf team is the ability to train every day of the year. Along with the use of state-of-the-art technology for performance analysis, UA’s golf team has an advantage over the nation’s top competition. After their first season of indoor training in the winter of 2004-05, the Zips were able to showcase an improved squad in the 2005 Spring season. The indoor facility helped the Zips cut more than 1.5 strokes off their average round and increased their competitive play, including one individual victory, more rounds under par and five of seven golfers improving their strokes-per-round average in the spring from that of their fall 2004 averages. In addition to the indoor golf facility, the UA field house features a full 120-yard AstroPlay field and a 300-meter Mondo track. Additional components of the building include spectator seating for approximately 1,200, a new sports medicine center, varsity locker rooms and athletics equipment storage areas. Also in 2006 additional offices were added to the facility, housing the coaching staffs for UA’s football, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer and track and field teams. To help the team prepare for a long season on the course, the field house features a strength and conditioning center with over 8,000-square-feet of space, which includes both strength training and rehabilitation equipment. This addition to UA athletics enables the men’s golf team and the rest of the 18 intercollegiate teams to have an advantage when it comes to recruiting the top student-athlete’s in the nation. All 18 of UA’s intercollegiate athletics teams have access to the area, both in season, and for off-season conditioning workouts.

Nick

Goetze Head Coach Clemson, 1993

In his fourth season as head coach of the Akron golf program Nick Goetze has the Zips in position to challenge for the Mid-American Conference Championship. During the 2010 Fall campaign, Akron posted four top-10s and one runner-up finish in six events. After posting a record of 178-120 against Division I competition, the Zips finished the slate 64th in the nation in total number of birdies (196) and fairways hit (.646). The 2009-10 season opened with Goetze recruiting one of the best freshmen classes in Division I with the addition of junior transfer Lucas Murray. During the season, the Zips posted one victory, one top-five and four top-10 finishes. Akron also took the next step towards its first MAC title, posting a third-place finish at last year’s league tournament, the second-best finish by the Zips in program history. Then-junior Lucas Murray and senior Jacob Patte were honored by the MAC as Murray earned Second-Team All-MAC accolades while Patte was named the MAC Sportsman of the Year. Likewise, Goetze added leadership to his roster this season accumulating Murray, a standout from nearby Mount Union. Playing in all six fall tournaments, Murray finished in the top-25 in five events including a first place finish at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 5-6). Earning Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 5, Murray ended the 2009 fall season with the lowest scoring average in the league (71.69). In September 2009, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced that The University of Akron men’s golf team was named to the GCAA all-academic team. The Zips were one of just 45 Division I institutions to achieve the honor and one of only three Mid-American Conference schools. Proven over the previous two years, UA has placed three on the All-MAC academic teams and had one NCAA Academic All-American in current assistant coach Colin Clemente. Easily heralded as one of the best incoming classes in the history of the program, the four freshmen (Tim Lew, Scott Landreth, Ryan Mason and Steve Bednar) were rated as the third-best recruiting class in NCAA Division I golf according to Golfstat.com through the 2008 fall season. Ranked by relative strength in the division, Akron’s freshmen class impact rating was a 388.934. Goetze, hired on August 6, 2007, came to Akron with an extensive background in collegiate golf, as well as experience as a professional athlete on the PGA, Canadian, Asian and NGA Hooters Tours. Goetze, a three-time All-American as a collegiate golfer at Clemson, led Mississippi State to the 2000 NCAA Championship as that program’s head coach, while leading MSU and University of Texas at El Paso to a total of three NCAA Regional berths. He additionally helped Florida to an NCAA Regional as an assistant coach, had two stints as a professional golfer (1994-96 and 2003-04), and worked in private business for two years before returning to coaching.

Prior to his time serving as a financial advisor for PMFM Inc., Goetze was head coach at Florida State from 2000-03. During his tenure, he led the Seminoles to 21 top-10 finishes in tournament play, nine in his last season at FSU. Among those was placing sixth at the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, which was the program’s best finish at the nationally renowned ACC since 1995. Goetze also experienced success in the highly-competitive Southeastern Conference from 1998-2000 as head coach with Mississippi State. In 2000, he led the Bulldogs to a third-place finish at the SEC Championship, earned a berth to the NCAA East Regional and, thanks to a seventh-place finish, advanced to the 2000 NCAA Championships, where MSU placed 19th. Also in 2000, Mississippi State’s Alex Rocha placed 12th individually at the East Regional. In 1999, Goetze’s first season with Mississippi State, the Bulldogs posted three team victories during the season, placed fourth at the SEC Championships and received a bid to the NCAA East Regional, tying for 10th. Prior to his arrival in Starkville, the Bulldogs had not participated in the NCAA since 1991. His first appointment as a head collegiate coach came at UTEP for the 199798 season. In his lone season with the Miners, UTEP won a team title and received a bid to participate in the NCAA West Regional. Goetze began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Florida. In his one year in Gainesville (1996-97), the Gators earned a berth to the NCAA East Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championships, placing 15th.
