What is a Zip? One of the unique nicknames in all of intercollegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron. Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twentyfive years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for The University’s athletics teams. Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company. The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decided the University needed a mascot. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953. The first known printed reference to the mascot as “Zippy” was a 1965 Zip football press brochure. The Buchtelite’s first use of the name “Zippy” came Sept. 24, 1965, in an identification of a photo of the cheerleaders listing “Mascot - ‘Zippy’ - Charles Huettner.” In 2007, Zippy was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year.

The Zips out-dueled seven teams in the Golfstat Top-100 and nine of the 11 Big Ten programs en route to the 2011 Illini Spring Classic team title. The victory was the first since Akron won the Xavier Invitational on October 6, 2009, and was one of the biggest wins in program history, vaulting the Zips into the GolfStat Top-100 rankings for the first time since the conclusion of the 2006-07 season.

Akron GOLF
The North and West Courses at the world-renowned Firestone Country Club serve as the home courses for The University of Akron men’s golf team. The North Course opened in 1969 and has been rated by Golf Digest as one of Ohio’s top-10 courses. Firestone Country Club, opened for play in 1929, was created by Harvey S. Firestone to serve as a recreational park for employees of the Akron-based Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, which he founded. The original links of the South Course were designed by the late Bert Way. Professional golf first visited the Akron area in 1953, when the Rubber City Open was played at Breathnach Country Club in Cuyahoga Falls. The event moved to Firestone in 1954 as a fullysanctioned tournament and continued through 1959. The PGA Championship was awarded to Akron in 1960, and to provide a worthy test, architect Robert Trent Jones was hired to bring the course, which was then a 6,585-yard par-72, up to true championship standards. When Jones was finished adding 50 bunkers and two new ponds, the new card listed 7,189 yards and a par 70. The success of the PGA Championship in Akron led to a new event, the American Golf Classic, which began in 1961 and was played annually through 1976. The PGA Championship returned to the South Course in 1966 and again in 1975, making Firestone the first club to host this championship three times. Since 1962, Firestone’s South Course has been the site for the annual World Series of Golf, a major event on the PGA Tour. For 14 years, the event brought together the winner of the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and the PGA Championship for a two-round, 36-hole television competition. In succeeding years, Firestone played host to many other competitions, including the CBS Golf Classic and Big Three Golf. The World Series of Golf was expanded in 1976 and offered the world of professional golf an international championship in which all the participants had won at least one tournament in the past year. In 1984, NEC Corporation became the event’s title sponsor. The PGA’s World Golf Championships NEC Invitational debuted at Firestone Country Club in August 1999, replacing the World Series of Golf. This tournament is part of a World Golf Championship series, and features the game’s foremost players. Tiger Woods won the 2001 event for the third time in as many years. The course also played host to the 2002 Senior PGA Championship. In 2001, the West Course was renovated by renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio, making Firestone Country Club the finest 54hole golf facility in the world.

One of the tougher holes that requires a very accurate drive between two lakes and a very accurate second shot into a narrow green guarded by three green-side bunkers.

Maybe the hardest hole on the entire property. A very straight drive into the prevailing wind on this 452 yard hole will leave a mid to long iron into a deep but very narrow green guarded by bunkers on the right and a steep hillside on the left.
Hole 18 Par 5 – 545 Yards The tee shot is the key to this hole. Bite off as much as you can on this dogleg right and it is a pretty easy birdie. Water protects the right side of the complete hole. The green is guarded by three front side bunkers and water on the right. A great finishing hole.

Again, like the other par 3’s club selection and a very accurate shot to this island green is required. The elevation of the teeing area and the predominant cross wind makes this hole very difficult.

Akron Zips indoor practice facility
In addition to helping the players perform on the course, the golf facility also features offices for the coaching staff and a study lounge to help classroom performance. The biggest advantage the facility gives the golf team is the ability to train year round. Along with the use of state-of-the-art technology for performance analysis, UA’s golf team now has an advantage over the nation’s top competition. In addition to the indoor golf facility, the Stile Athletics Field House features a full 120-yard AstroPlay field and a 300-meter Mondo track. Additional components of the building include spectator seating for approximately 1,200, a sports medicine center, varsity locker rooms and athletics equipment storage areas. In 2006, additional offices were added to the facility, housing the coaching staffs for UA’s football, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, track and field, and cross country teams. To help the team prepare for a long season on the course, the field house features a strength and conditioning center with over 8,000-square-feet of space, which includes both strength training and rehabilitation equipment. This addition to UA athletics enables the women’s golf team and the rest of the University’s intercollegiate teams to have an advantage when it comes to recruiting the top student-athlete’s in the nation. All 19 of UA’s intercollegiate athletics teams have access to the area, both in season and for off-season conditioning workouts.

The teams in the invitational face a stern challenge when they descend on the fabled Firestone Country Club. There’s no doubt it will provide excitement. Firestone has a rich history of testing the world’s best players, which it did for 22 years as the site of the World Series of Golf and now the present home of the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational. Quietly situated on the outskirts of Akron, Ohio, Firestone Country Club has the finest 54-holes of golf of any private club in the country.

Established in 1929 by Harvey Firestone and later acquired by ClubCorp in 1981, Firestone Country Club remains a one of a kind golf facility. It is the only course in the world to have held three televised golf events in one calendar year, The American Golf Classic, The CBS Golf Classic, and The World Series of Golf. With its three championship level courses, Firestone Country Club is as unique today as it has ever been. Akron GOLF
Providing leadership in education and diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 65th year of service to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 65-year history of the league in March of 2009. Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. The league has grown its commitment to championships by expanding to six its number of neutral site post season events – football (Detroit’s Ford Field), volleyball (SPIRE Academy, Geneva, Ohio), men’s and women’s basketball (Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena), softball (Akron’s Firestone Stadium) and baseball (Avon, Ohio All Pro Freight Stadium). In 2010, four MAC programs received bowl invitations and it marked the first time in conference history that the MAC had four or more teams receive bowl invitations in a three-year consecutive span. In addition, the MAC has sent four or more teams to bowl games in five of the last seven years. The four MAC programs that played in bowl games were: Miami (GoDaddy.com Bowl), Northern Illinois (uDrove Humanitarian Bowl), Toledo (Little Caesars Pizza Bowl) and Ohio (R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl). The MAC record for bowl appearances is five, which happened in consecutive years (2008, 2009) and only three times (2004, 2008, 2009) in conference history. The 2010 season also witnessed Miami win the 2010 Marathon MAC Championship and record the best turnaround in college football with an eight win improvement over the previous season (1-11 in 2009). Northern Illinois entered the Marathon MAC Football Championship ranked No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 24 in the Associated Press Poll. Two more MAC teams defeated Big Ten opponents during the regular season as Northern Illinois defeated Minnesota, 34-23 in Minneapolis, while Toledo rolled to a 31-20 win at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. For the first time in its 65-year history, the MAC will have eight bowl relationships--three primary and five secondary. The three primary agreements are with the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl (Detroit, Mich.), GoDaddy. com Bowl (Mobile, Ala.) and uDrove Humanitarian Bowl (Boise, Ida.). In addition, the MAC has secured secondary agreements with the BBVA Compass Bowl (2011-2013), the New Mexico Bowl (2011-2013), the Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl (2011-13), the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (2011) and the TicketCity Bowl (2012). In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC is in the third year of its eightyear rights agreement (through 2016-2017 academic years) for football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The deal is the most extensive in the 65-year history of the conference. The agreement calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men’s and women’s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Football Championship and a minimum of 11 regular-season football games. From two-time Super Bowl quarterback winning Ben Roethlisberger (Miami University), NFL Defensive MVP James Harrison (Kent State University), three NFL Pro Bowlers (Cleveland KR Josh Cribbs, San Diego TE Antonio Gates, Pittsburgh LB James Harrison), British Open winner Ben Curtis (Kent State University), World Series winning manager Bob Brenly (Ohio University) and Olympic bobsled team member Brock Kreitzburgh (University of Toledo), the Mid-American Conference continues to excel in producing leaders in the world of athletics. In Super Bowl XLV between Green Bay and Pittsburgh there were 15 former MAC studentathletes on rosters competing in the Super Bowl, including nine with the Packers and six with the Steelers, and six former MAC players were named to the 2011 NFL Pro Bowl.

History of the MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, and 14th, UMass for football only (beginning in 2012). Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947). In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980. For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.

David Trainor
Head Coach First Season College of Charleston, 2001 • Spent seven seasons at Kentucky, inlcuding two seasons as associate head coach • Was a four-year letterwinner at the College of Charleston University of Akron Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill named University of Kentucky associate head coach David Trainor as head coach of the Zips men’s golf program on June 13, 2011. Trainor, who spent the last seven seasons on the UK staff, including two as the associate head coach and five as an assistant coach, will officially take over the program on July 5. Trainor is the 19th head coach in the program’s 78-year history. “It is an honor and privilege to be the head men’s golf coach at The University of Akron,” Trainor said. “I want to thank Tom Wistrcill and (Associate Athletics Director) George Van Horne for giving me this opportunity. I am looking forward to building upon the success that coach Nick Goetze achieved with the Zips program, and I want to see our team continue to move forward and compete for a MAC Championship. My family and I are excited about moving to Akron and joining the University family.” In his seven seasons at Kentucky, Trainor helped the Wildcats to two top10 finishes at the NCAA Championship (seventh – 2005; fifth – 2006), the 2005 Southeastern Conference Championship and nine overall tournament titles. Additionally, he helped student-athletes earn three AllAmerican honors and three Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, as well as five All-SEC and 20 Academic All-SEC honors. “We are very pleased to have David and his family join The University of Akron, the Department of Athletics and the Akron community,” Wistrcill said. “David is one of the top assistant coaches in Division I golf and his knowledge and expertise will help take our men’s golf program to the next level. His experience at the University of Kentucky and his teaching background will be valuable tools as we look to compete for a Mid-American Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in the near future.” Trainor, a native of Berwyn, Pa., was a four-year varsity letterwinner at the College of Charleston, where he graduated in 2000 with a degree in business administration. While at Charleston, Trainor received the Coaches Award in 1997 for his leadership and dedication to the men’s golf team.
