What is a Zip? One of the unique nicknames in all of intercollegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron. Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twentyfive years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for The University’s athletics teams. Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company. The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decided the University needed a mascot. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953. The first known printed reference to the mascot as “Zippy” was a 1965 Zip football press brochure. The Buchtelite’s first use of the name “Zippy” came Sept. 24, 1965, in an identification of a photo of the cheerleaders listing “Mascot - ‘Zippy’ - Charles Huettner.” In 2007, Zippy was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year.

When the Zips hit the links, they have the benefit of playing at the Rosemont County Club, which serves as the official home course for The University of Akron women’s golf team. The championship course is located in nearby Fairlawn, Ohio, and is the site of the Zippy Invitational, an annual event that showcases some of the top collegiate programs in the Midwest. The course features an award-winning design by the Hurdzan Design Group, features tree-lined fairways, subtle doglegs and bunkering. There are few water hazards and ravines to impede play. The course measures 5,260 yards from the women’s tees and 6,006 from the men’s tees. The championship blue tees course is 6,433 yards. Rosemont Country Club began as the Montrose Club in 1920. In 1991, a new clubhouse was built, accompanied by a new swim and tennis complex, golf learning center and driving range. The clubhouse is equipped with numerous amenities, including locker rooms for both women and men, steam room and sauna.

indoor practice facility The University of Akron’s indoor golf facility is one of the finest in the Midwest. In order to assist with each student-athlete’s play on the course, the indoor golf facility features a putting green, bunker and a video motion analysis system.
The biggest advantage the facility gives the golf team is the ability to train year round. Along with the use of state-of-the-art technology for performance analysis, UA’s golf team now has an advantage over the nation’s top competition.
In 2006, additional offices were added to the facility, housing the coaching staffs for UA’s football, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, track and field, and cross country teams.

To help the team prepare for a long season on the course, the field house features a strength and conditioning center with over 8,000-square-feet of space, which includes both strength training and rehabilitation equipment.

In addition to the indoor golf facility, the Stile Athletics Field House features a full 120-yard AstroPlay field and a 300-meter Mondo track.

zippy invitational The University of Akron women’s golf team has played host to the Zippy Invitational in each of its three seasons as a varsity sport. Each year, the Zips welcome an exciting field of teams from across the country, including squads from the Mid-American Conference. Each Fall, the teams descend on par-72, 6,025-yard Rosemont Country Club, the home course for the Zips, for this three-round event. The Zippy Invitational has played host to a number of programs, including MAC foes Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Toledo. Other participants have included Bucknell, Cleveland State, Dayton, Detroit, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Marshall, Oakland, Robert Morris, Niagara, Youngstown State and others. Akron repeated as team champion in 2011, posting a program-best two-round score of 597 (+29) to win by 24 strokes. Senior Katie Jenior won her first collegiate title with a score of 3-over 145. The 2010 edition of the Zippy Invitational will go down in school history as the Zips captured their first team title since the program’s beginning in 2008. Akron led wire-to-wire to post a four-stroke victory with a three-round total of 950 (314-308-328). Before the victory, the Zips had posted four runner-up finishes. “The golf course played very tough, but our overall play during both days of the event is what made the difference,” said UA head coach Jenny King. “I am very proud of how we dealt with the conditions and were able to come out with the win.” Junior Kristen Hill led the way for the Zips, taking runner-up honors after posting a final-round 75 to finish with an 11-over 227 (79-73-75). In 2009, Akron posted a third-place finish at the Second Annual Zippy Invitational. The Zips recorded a three-round score of 953 strokes behind strong play from Hill and Hanna Ek. The Zips played host to their first home tournament in program history when they hosted the inaugural Zippy Invitational from Sept. 29-30, 2008. Behind three top-10 performances, the Zips took advantage of their home course with a second-place finish with a two-day score of 943 (321-303-319). Eastern Michigan, which jumped out to a commanding 20-stroke lead after the first two rounds, posted 315 strokes on the final day to win the 12-team tournament with a final score of 919 strokes (300-304-315).

In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC is in the third year of its eightyear rights agreement (through 2016-2017 academic years) for football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The deal is the most extensive in the 65-year history of the conference. The agreement calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men’s and women’s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Football Championship and a minimum of 11 regular-season football games.
2010-11 Review
For the first time in its 65-year history, the MAC will have eight bowl relationships--three primary and five secondary. The three primary agreements are with the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl (Detroit, Mich.), GoDaddy. com Bowl (Mobile, Ala.) and uDrove Humanitarian Bowl (Boise, Ida.). In addition, the MAC has secured secondary agreements with the BBVA Compass Bowl (2011-2013), the New Mexico Bowl (2011-2013), the Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl (2011-13), the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (2011) and the TicketCity Bowl (2012).
Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, and 14th, UMass for football only (beginning in 2012). Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947).

In 2010, four MAC programs received bowl invitations and it marked the first time in conference history that the MAC had four or more teams receive bowl invitations in a three-year consecutive span. In addition, the MAC has sent four or more teams to bowl games in five of the last seven years. The four MAC programs that played in bowl games were: Miami (GoDaddy.com Bowl), Northern Illinois (uDrove Humanitarian Bowl), Toledo (Little Caesars Pizza Bowl) and Ohio (R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl). The MAC record for bowl appearances is five, which happened in consecutive years (2008, 2009) and only three times (2004, 2008, 2009) in conference history. The 2010 season also witnessed Miami win the 2010 Marathon MAC Championship and record the best turnaround in college football with an eight win improvement over the previous season (1-11 in 2009). Northern Illinois entered the Marathon MAC Football Championship ranked No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 24 in the Associated Press Poll. Two more MAC teams defeated Big Ten opponents during the regular season as Northern Illinois defeated Minnesota, 34-23 in Minneapolis, while Toledo rolled to a 31-20 win at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
History of the MAC
Student-Athletes
The league has grown its commitment to championships by expanding to six its number of neutral site post season events – football (Detroit’s Ford Field), volleyball (SPIRE Academy, Geneva, Ohio), men’s and women’s basketball (Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena), softball (Akron’s Firestone Stadium) and baseball (Avon, Ohio All Pro Freight Stadium).
Akron golf
Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 65-year history of the league in March of 2009. Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Jenny King Head Coach Fourth Season Kentucky 2001
• Started the program in 2007 • Has coached the Zips to 12 top-five finishes in 34 events Jenny King, who has built The University of Akron women’s golf program from the ground up, is in her fourth competitive season at UA after being named head coach in April 2007. In three seasons, the program has grown into a competitor for individual and team titles, against both non-conference competition and MidAmerican Conference foes. Through three seasons, the Zips have won one event, posted 12 top-five finishes and earned four individual tournament titles in 34 events. Additionally, individual honors have included three All-MAC selections (Kristen Hill - 2011 First Team, 2010 First Team, 2009 Second Team) and seven MAC Golfer of the Week honors (Hill, 6; Hanna Ek, 1). For the third time in three seasons, three Zips under the watch of King – Amanda Butler, Hanna Ek and Tyler Etcheberry – earned National Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar status. For each, it was the third honor and helped vault Akron into the top 10 in team GPA in the nation (3.697). UA tied Gustavus Adolphus College for tenth place, the highest finish in program history. Ek, Butler, Etcheberry and Katie Jenior were all named Academic AllMAC, with Ek making the first team. Ek was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District® Women’s At-Large Second Team for District IV by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the first player in program history to earn that honor. Ek has a 3.98 cumulative GPA through the 2010-11 academic year while studying mechanical engineering. After a successful 2010 fall campaign, the 2011 spring season saw the Zips break several school records as a team and by an individual. As a team, Akron broke the school record for a single-round team score (293) and three-round team score (891) at the Lumberjack Shootout at Wigwam (March 14-16, 2011). Their score of 293 during the final round came one day after the Zips tied the school record with a round of 296. The three-round score of 891 broke the previous program mark by 19 strokes. The season also saw Hill earn two MAC Golfer of the Week honors as the Zips would finish the year with five top-six finishes in six events, capped off with a tie for fourth place at the MAC Championships. Additional records for the season included Hill bettering her season average (75.21) and career average (76.27) marks. The fall 2010 season saw the Zips reach new heights as Akron won its first team title in program history at the Third-Annual Zippy Invitational (Oct. 11-12, 2010). Behind five top-25 performances, the Zips won the team title by four strokes. Ek earned the program’s fourth individual title in 28 events, taking 2010 MAC Preview individual honors (Oct. 18-19, 2010). UA finished in the top-10 in all five events. During the 2010 spring campaign, the Zips closed out the season on a strong note, posting four-consecutive top-five finishes. Akron just missed the program’s first team title at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate (March 19-20, 2010), finishing seven strokes behind the tournament-winner William and Mary. The slate saw then-sophomore Hill win two individual crowns, earn two MAC Golfer of the Week honors and First-Team All-MAC. After a pair of competitive showings in the first two tournaments of fall 2009, Akron hit its stride, sparked by a third-place designation (among

15 teams) at the Second-Annual Zippy Invitational in early October. UA then captured third place among a 16-team field at the Duramed MAC Preview (Oct. 12-13, 2009) the following week and capped off its impressive fall campaign with a fifth-place finish at the Ross Resorts Invitational (Oct. 26-27, 2009). As a team, the Zips not only showed great resolve for such a young squad but took a wave of confidence, based on those early successes during the fall, into the spring 2009 season. The season was highlighted by the program’s third runner-up finish at the Tina Barrett Longwood Invitational (March 30-31) at the Manor Resort Golf Club in Farmville, Va. UA carded 971 strokes (326-326-319) to capture second place among the competitive 12-team field. First-year player Jenior led a trio of top-20 finishers for Akron with a 12th-place designation at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, as UA made an instant impact at its first ever league championship (April 24-26, 2009). The spring slate culminated with a tie for third place at the MAC Championship. For her consistent play all year long, first-year standout Hill not only became the program’s first MAC Golfer of the Week (Sept. 26, 2008) but also earned Second-Team All-MAC honors. Under King’s guidance, Hill captured her first collegiate win in just her second tournament as a collegian at the Cardinal Classic (Sept. 22-23, 2008) at The Players Club in Muncie, Ind. Moreover, UA golfers were getting it done in the classroom as well as three standouts - Butler, Ek and Etcheberry - were named to the NGCA All-America Scholar Team. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of collegiate athletics. The minimum cumulative grade-point average is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent (Division I) and 66 percent (Division II and III) of the college’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year. Butler, a sports management major at UA, posted a 3.52 GPA in 200809 while teammates Ek, a mechanical engineering major, recorded a 4.0 GPA and Etcheberry, a business major, carried a 3.67 GPA. Just 410 women’s golfers were selected nationwide among Divisions I, II and III for the prestigious distinction. This academic excellence has continued through 2010 as the Zips entered the spring campaign with a lofty cumulative team GPA of 3.25. Hill’s development continued during summer when she qualified for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, which features some of the most talented female amateur golfers in the nation.
