IN THE NCAA • Since 2006, The University of Akron men’s soccer program has posted the highest winning percentage in the nation (.824) with an overall record of 105-17-14, heading into the 2012 campaign. NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Win. % (2006-2011) School Record Win. % 1. Akron 105-17-14 (.824) 2. Maryland 97-27-12 (.757) 3. Monmouth 84-22-17 (.752) 4. Wake Forest 94-28-17 (.737) 5. Connecticut 83-24-22 (.729) • UA has accomplished this despite playing the toughest competition in the country. In fact, the Zips have recorded a top-20 RPI in each of the past five seasons, including the No. 1-ranked RPI in the final regular-season release in 2009 and the No. 1-ranked non-conference RPI in 2010. • The Zips have advanced to the national championship game in two of the past three seasons (2009 and 2010) and captured the first team national championship in school history for any sport in December of 2010 with a 1-0 victory over Louisville in Santa Barbara, Calf. • UA has made five straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2007-11), earning a first-round bye in all but one season. The Zips have advanced to the NCAA’s Round of 16 in each of the last four years. • The Zips have assaulted the NCAA record book over the course of the past three seasons. Fueled by one of the greatest defensive seasons in college history, UA matched an NCAA record by posting a perfect 23-0-0 record heading into the College Cup in 2009 en route to its runner-up finish. Akron didn’t allow a single goal during the NCAA Tournament that year and finished with 19 shutouts for the campaign, which represented the second-highest total all-time. Furthermore, its goals-against-average (0.27) and shutout percentage (.760) were ranked third-best in NCAA history. • Akron then matched another NCAA record by posting its 11th consecutive shutout in 2010, including notable cleansheet victories against then-ranked No. 4 North Carolina (3-0),

No. 3 Wake Forest (2-0) and No. 2 Tulsa (4-0). • Another historic milestone fell in 2011 when the Zips set the all-time NCAA mark for the longest home unbeaten streak. Akron pushed its run to 40 games with a 5-0 rout of Cleveland State in the season opener at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field to break the original standard held by Tulsa, which went unbeaten in 39 games at home from 1988-’92. • The Zips would remain undefeated on their home field for eight more matches, extending the all-time record to 48 contests (44-0-4). The streak came to a close when Michigan State escaped with a 1-0 win in the final regular-season match with a second-half goal despite being out-shot 17-5 for the contest. • Since 1961, the Zips have advanced to the NCAA postseason 26 times, including each of the past five seasons and 10 of the past 11. All-Time UA NCAA Tournament Appearances (26) 1961, 1963, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986*, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009*, 2010*, 2011 * advanced to NCAA national championship game

IN THE CLASSROOM • The Zips posted a collective GPA of 3.44 in 2011, which represented the second-highest team average in Division I. They were only slightly edged out for the top spot by Harvard (3.45), which incidentally finished with an overall record of 2-13-3. • The remarkable accomplishment continued a trend of academic excellence under Porter’s watch. Akron recorded a team GPA of 3.43 in 2010-11 and 3.33 in 2009-10. • The Zips have garnered 15 Academic All-American honors in its history, dating back to the 1998 season. Of that total, 10 have come during Porter’s tenure (2006-11) alone. Returning seniors Chad Barson (First Team), Scott Caldwell (Second Team) and David Meves (Third Team) each earned the distinction in 2011. Barson and Meves were repeat honorees while Caldwell was recognized for the first time. • The most decorated Zips’ Academic All-American is Kofi Sarkodie, who was named the NCAA Academic All-American of the Year for men’s soccer in 2010. Sarkodie, who was a Hermann Trophy semifinalist and Soccer America’s Player of the Year, finished his career at the Akron with a 3.959 cumulative GPA as a biology major. He was the first student-athlete in school history to be named Academic All-American of the Year. • Sarkodie was one of four Zips to earn Academic All-American honors that season, which represented the most by any single team in the history of the UA Athletics Department.

• Akron has produced the MAC Player of the Year in each of the past seven seasons while Porter has been named MAC Coach of the Year in each of the last five. Moreover, five Zips have earned the league’s Newcomer of the Year honor in as many seasons dating back to 2007. • Since joining the league in 1993, the Zips have produced 126 All-MAC honorees, including a conference-record nine first-team selections in 2010.
IN THE MLS DRAFT • In the past six years alone, Coach Porter and his staff have produced 13 Major League Soccer draft selections, including the No. 2 overall pick Darren Mattocks (pictured above) to the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2012. • Of those 13 picks, nine were taken in the first round and seven had their name called with one of the first eight selections overall. • Steve Zakuani was the program’s first No. 1 overall draft pick at the 2009 SuperDraft. The Hermann Trophy runner-up and the nation’s leading scorer (20 goals in 23 matches) in 2008 was the first ever pick of the then-expansion Seattle Sounders. • Since then, the Zips have had two players drafted as high as the No. 2 overall pick. In addition to Mattocks last winter, Darlington Nagbe, who was the school’s second straight Hermann Trophy winner following Akron’s national championship season, earned the distinction in 2011. • When Nagbe had his name called on Jan. 13, 2011, it was the start of a historic day at the MLS SuperDraft. In all, seven Zips were taken that day, including five of the first eight picks overall. • The run on Akron players broke a pair of MLS records. It was the most players taken in the first round (5) from any single team as well as the most players (7) drafted from any one school in a single year. • Teal Bunbury, the 2009 Hermann Trophy winner, would be the first of three Zips taken at the 2010 draft when Sporting Kansas City made the athletic striker with Canadian roots the No. 4 overall pick. Adding to the list that season were teammates Blair Gavin (No. 10) and Ben Zemanski (No. 47), who were each drafted by Chivas USA. • The first Akron player to be draft under Porter’s watch was Sinisa Ubiparipovic, who went to the New York Red Bulls with the 33rd overall pick in 2007. • Cameron Knowles, who was named assistant coach on the Portland Timbers staff on Jan. 26, 2012, became the first player in program history to be drafted into MLS when Real Salt Lake took the Zips defender in the supplemental round (No. 37 overall) of the 2005 draft.

n a short amount of time, Caleb Porter, who owns the highest win percentage among all active Division I coaches, has become one of the most highly respected soccer coaches in the nation. Since becoming the sixth head coach in Akron history in 2006, Porter, who owns a career mark of 105-17-14 (.824), has built the Zips’ program into a perennial national championship contender – capturing the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010 – while developing a brand of play that is attractive and attack-oriented, yet effective on both sides of the ball. Due in large part to this dynamic vision, unprecedented success and keen ability to identify and develop talent, Porter was named head coach of the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team last October. The Zips’ historic 2010 campaign capped off one of the most dominating two-year runs the college soccer world has ever seen. During that time, the Zips, who lost just once during the regular run of play over 50 matches, posted an overall mark of 45-2-3 while becoming the first school to advance to national championship games in back-to-back seasons since Indiana accomplished the feat in 2003 and 2004. Leaving little doubt of its strength of schedule, Akron achieved this success while playing the most difficult competition in college soccer with the No. 1-ranked RPI in the final regular-season release in 2009 and the No.1-ranked non-conference RPI in 2010. Fueled by one of the greatest defensive seasons in college soccer history, the Zips matched an NCAA record by winning 23 consecutive matches on their rampage to the College Cup and runner-up finish in 2009. UA didn’t allow a single goal during the NCAA Tournament that year and finished with 19 shutouts – representing the second-highest total all-time. Furthermore, it’s goals-against average (0.27) and shutout percentage (.760) were ranked third all-time. Porter’s Zips then matched another NCAA milestone in 2010 by registering their 11th consecutive shutout in a 4-0 rout at home over No. 2 Tulsa before a sold out crowd and nationally televised audience. The win also represented the 29th game of UA’s 48-match home-unbeaten streak, which shattered an NCAA record the following season. In all, Porter, 36, has guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference regular season championships, four MAC Tournament titles and four consecutive trips to the NCAA’s Round of 16. He became the fastest in program history to reach 100 career wins, accomplishing the feat in just 126 matches, and is among the fastest all-time to do so; beating legendary Hall of Fame coaches Virginia’s Bruce Arena (140 matches) and UCLA’s Sigi Schmid (131) to the century mark. Porter, who was rewarded with a 10-year contract extension that will keep him at UA through the 2020 season, was named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009 and has won the MAC Coach of the Year award in each of the past five seasons

(2007-11). He is also a three-time Division I All-Ohio Coach of the Year. Highly regarded for his tactical insight and ability to recognize talent, Porter, who served as an assistant coach on the U.S. Under-18 National Team for three years from 2009-11, has developed two Hermann Trophy winners in the last three seasons. Teal Bunbury, a current member of the U.S. Men’s National Team, became the first UA player to win the prestigious award in 2009 and teammate Darlington Nagbe, who was the No. 2 overall selection of the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, followed suit in 2010. UA was just the fifth school in the history of the men’s player of the year award to record consecutive winners all-time and the first since Virginia in 1995-96. Moreover, Bunbury and Nagbe are two of 14 players in MLS who were coached by Porter and his staff in the last six years at Akron, including nine first-round draft picks. In fact, Zips’ players had their names called at a record-setting pace at the 2011 MLS SuperDraft as seven members from the national championship team were selected, including five of the first eight picks. The five first-round selections set an MLS record, as did the seven players taken overall. English-born striker Steve Zakuani, who led the nation with 20 goals as a sophomore in 2008, became the No. 1 overall selection of the draft (to Seattle) after just two years in Porter’s system. In that same mold, Bunbury was the country’s top goal scorer in 2009 as a sophomore with 17 goals and was selected with the No. 4 pick overall (Kansas City) in 2010. Nagbe was the first of three straight UA selections drafted in 2011, going No. 2 overall to the expansion Portland Timbers. Freshman midfielder Perry Kitchen (No. 3 to D.C. United) and sophomore defender Zarek Valentin (No. 4 to Chivas USA) would follow before another run of Zips that saw junior defender and Soccer America Player of the Year Kofi Sarkodie go to Houston with the No. 7 pick and junior midfielder Michael Nanchoff go to Vancouver with the No. 8 pick complete the historic first round of the 2011 draft. After senior defender Chris Korb became the second Zip on the day to go to D.C. United (No. 31

overall), senior midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong was taken by San Jose (No. 33) to push UA’s total number of draftees to seven; setting the MLS standard. Akron’s success at the MLS draft continued in 2012 when sophomore Darren Mattocks was the No. 2 overall selection, going to the expansion franchise Montreal Impact. He was the fourth UA sophomore to be drafted in as many seasons after tallying 21 goals – the third highest, single-season total in school history – in 22 matches. In the past six seasons, the Zips have yielded 10 All-Americans, 12 freshman All-Americans and 27 NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region standouts. During that time, nine players have been signed to highly coveted Generation adidas contracts, including five in 2010, which represented another MLS record. UA has also produced 63 all-conference honorees since 2006, including 52 first teamers, and has captured the MAC Player of the Year award in each of Porter’s seasons at the helm (Mattocks in 2011, Nagbe in 2010, Bunbury in 2009, Zakuani in 2008, Corey Sipos in 2007 and Sinisa Ubiparipovic in 2006). In fact, the Zips have swept the league’s postseason awards in each of the past five seasons by claiming Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year (Wil Trapp in 2011, Mattocks in 2010, Valentin in 2009, Nagbe in 2008 and Zakuani in 2007) honors. Porter and his staff have also taken the recruitment game to an all new level at UA by securing top-five classes each year. After reeling in fifth-ranked classes in both 2007 and 2008, the Zips recorded the No. 1 class in the nation in 2009 and the No. 2 classes in 2010 and 2011. As a team, the Zips have been just as impressive in the class-

That season IU won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles en route to an NCAA Championship. From 2003-05, Porter served as a coach and senior age group trainer with the Bloomington Cutters Soccer Club, winning an Under-18 Indiana state championship in 2004 and a U-19 state championship in 2005. room during Porter’s tenure. Akron was ranked No. 2 in the nation for the 2010-11 academic year with a team GPA of 3.44 (second only to Harvard’s 3.45) after earning a No. 8 designation (3.33) for 2009-10. In all, 10 Zips have been named to Academic All-America teams in six seasons under Porter while 19 have been named to the allconference academic team. Headlining that list of Academic All-Americans in 2010 was Sarkodie, who became the first player in school history to earn Academic All-America of the Year honors with a 3.969 GPA as a biology major at UA. He was one of four players to land on the ESPN Academic All-America squad that season, which signified the most representatives by any single team in UA history. Furthermore, Ampaipitakwong, an ESPN Academic All-America Third Team honoree in 2010, was the recipient of the 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I men’s soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. Akron has also established newly-renovated FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field as one of the nation’s toughest places for opposing teams to play over the past few years with a sparkling 64-3-6 (.918) record in six seasons under Porter. As a result of the unprecedented success, excitement for Akron soccer has never been greater. After finishing seventh nationally for attendance in 2009, the Zips drew an average of 3,213 fans to the pitch in 2010, which was the second-highest figure in the country and represented an increase of more than 1,000 fans on average from the previous season. The enthusiasm continued in 2011 as UA saw its numbers rise again with an average of 3,300 fans packing the pitch, including a facility-record figure of 5,819 supporters for the Zips’ 3-1 win over in-state rival Ohio State on Sept. 28. Porter came to the Zips from Indiana where he spent six seasons as an assistant coach for the Hoosiers, four of which came under Hall of Fame head coach Jerry Yeagley, who is the all-time winningest coach in Division I history and a six-time national coach of the year honoree, and the last two under Mike Freitag. As Indiana’s recruiting coordinator, Porter helped compile a recruiting class that was rated No. 1 in the nation in 2005 by College Soccer News and StudentSportsSoccer.com. The talent he attracted to the Hoosiers included four national players of the year, 14 Youth National Team members, 18 All-Americans and 12 state players of the year. During his time as an assistant with IU, the Hoosiers won five Big Ten Conference championships and made six NCAA Tournament appearances - including four trips to the College Cup. Indiana won consecutive national championships in 2003 and in 2004. A 1998 graduate of Indiana with a degree in sports management, Porter was a four-year letterwinner in the midfield for the Hoosiers. He was just the second three-year captain in IU history and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate player. Porter’s Indiana teams won four Big Ten titles and made four NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the College Cup on two occasions. As a senior, Porter captained IU to an NCAA record 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals. Porter’s resume also includes playing two seasons with the U.S. National B Team in 1996 and 1997 and earning a bronze

• Akron will also welcome the No. 1-ranked recruiting class in the nation in 2012. Included in the 14-player class are four of the top 11 high school recruits in the country and SMU transfer and former Freshman All-American Robbie Derschang, who will have two years of eligibility remaining at UA. • Two of those incoming recruits, striker Alfred Koroma and winger Dillon Serna, were selected to join sophomore midfielder Wil Trapp, who was rated the No. 1 freshman in the country by Top Drawer Soccer in 2011, on the 18-player U.S. Under-20 National Team roster that competed at the Northern Ireland Milk Cup last July. • Top Drawer Soccer highlighted Serna and Trapp as part of its preseason coverage. Serna made the publication’s list for the “Top 10 Freshmen to Watch in 2012”, while Trapp earned the same distinction for sophomores. 2011 IN REVIEW • Despite losing seven starters to the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, the Zips defied the odds last fall by advancing to the
• The Zips’ season came to a premature end when Charlotte, the eventual NCAA runner-up, squeaked out a 1-0 victory in the third round of the NCAA Tournament despite Akron’s 11-6 advantage in shots. • Nonetheless, Akron captured its seventh-consecutive MAC regular-season championship with a perfect 6-0 league record and set a number of historic milestones along the way. • UA set an NCAA record for the longest home unbeaten streak during a 5-0 rout of Cleveland State in the season opener on Aug. 27. With the win, the Zips extended their historic run to 40 games (38-0-2), dating back to the 2008 campaign. • The Zips would remain undefeated at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field for eight more matches (6-0-2), pushing their all-time record to 48 contests. The streak came to a close when Michigan State escaped with a 1-0 win in the final regularseason match with a second-half goal. It was an unfair result for Akron, which out-shot the Spartans, 17-5, for the game but couldn’t find the net. • Head coach Caleb Porter became the fastest coach in the 56year history of the Akron men’s soccer program to reach 100 career wins with a 2-0 victory against Hartwick on Oct. 15. Porter was also among the fastest of all Division I coaches all-time to reach the century mark, accomplishing the feat in fewer games (126) than legendary Hall of Fame coaches Virginia’s Bruce Arena (140) and UCLA’s Sigi Schmid (131). • In all, Porter, the 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year, is the fourth UA head coach to reach 100 wins in total, following Ken Lolla (160 wins in 13 seasons from 1993-2005), Steve Parker (139 wins in 11 seasons from 1982-’92) and Akron Soccer founder Stu Parry (118 wins in 15 seasons from 1955-’69).

History/records
• Caldwell, who netted the game-winning goal in the Zips’ national championship win against Louisville in 2010, followed up his heroic campaign with an All-American season. The midfielder from Braintree, Mass., recorded career-highs with six goals – including a pair of game-winners – and 11 assists last fall.
• The margin for error was incredibly thin as all four of UA’s losses were decided by one goal, including two defeats in overtime. Moreover, three of those setbacks were 1-0 results.
2012 notebook
• Barson, a defender from Lewis Center, Ohio, and Meves, a goalkeeper from Arlington Heights, Ill., helped the Zips post 11 shutouts in 23 matches in 2011, which was the 17th-highest percentage (0.48) in Division I.
• The Zips finished the year with an overall record 15-4-4 (.739) and were ranked 11th in the country in the final poll by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Dec. 13.
Student-Athletes
• The Zips return eight of 11 starters – including veterans Chad Barson, Scott Caldwell and David Meves, who led UA to the school’s first team national championship in any sport in 2010. Moreover, the trio has compiled an overall record of 60-6-7 over the past three seasons – including a mark of 9-2-2 in the NCAA postseason, captured three MidAmerican Conference regular-season championships, two MAC Tournament titles and advanced to NCAA final twice.
Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS • The University of Akron men’s soccer team will look to return to the NCAA College Cup for the third time in four years this fall following another deep postseason run in 2011.

• The Jamaican native was a NSCAA First Team All-American, a semifinalist for the prestigious Hermann Trophy and went on to become the No. 2 overall selection of the MLS Draft (via Vancouver). In the past six years alone, Akron has now produced 13 MLS draft selections, including nine first-round selections.

• As a sophomore, Mattocks, who finished second in the country with 21 goals in 22 games to go with four assists, was the ninth Akron player to earn the league’s highest honor since 1993 and followed Darlington Nagbe (2010), Teal Bunbury (2009), Steve Zakuani (2008), Corey Sipos (2007), Sinisa Ubiparipovic (2006) and Ross McKenzie (2005) as the seventh consecutive Zips’ player to receive the honor.
Staff
POSTSEASON HONORS • For the fifth straight season, UA swept the MAC specialty awards as Darren Mattocks was named Player of the Year, Wil Trapp was named Newcomer of the Year and Caleb Porter was named Coach of the Year.
• Trapp was the 10th UA player to earn the league’s top newcomer honor and the sixth in the last seven seasons, following Mattocks (2010), Zarek Valentin (2009), Nagbe (2008), Zakuani (2007) and Evan Bush (2005). • Porter has been named MAC Coach of the Year in each of the past five seasons. • Further, a total of 10 Akron players received All-MAC honors in 2011, including seven first-team selections. Joining Mattocks and Trapp on the first team were Caldwell, Aodhan Quinn, Luke Holmes, Barson and DeAndre Yedlin. Bryan Gallego, Meves and Thomas Schmitt each received Second Team honors. ZIPS CONTINUE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE • As a team, Akron also continued to be among the nation’s elite in the classroom, posting the second-highest collective GPA in the nation (3.44). This outstanding mark was just .01 behind Harvard (3.45) for the best average in Division I. Incidentally, the Crimson went 2-13-3 last season, including a 0-6-1 mark in the Ivy League.
• In all, 11 players from the 2011 roster posted a cumulative GPA of 3.5 of better through the fall semester. • Individually, Barson, Caldwell and Meves each earned a spot on the NSCAA Academic All-America teams with Barson (3.99 GPA, Biology) earning first-team status, Caldwell (3.95, Accounting) being named to the second team and Meves (3.78, Corporate Finance) garnering third-team honors. • The men’s soccer program has now garnered 15 Academic AllAmerica honors in its history, dating back to the 1998 season. Of that total, 10 have come during Porter’s tenure (since 2006) alone. • Also, Thomas Schmitt earned Academic All-District recognition for the first time in 2011 after posting a 3.55 GPA as a sports management major. 2012 SCHEDULE • Ten home games, featuring visits from NCAA Tournament qualifiers South Florida and St. John’s, a grudge match against Michigan and the first Mid-American Conference contest against West Virginia, highlight the 2012 University of Akron men’s soccer fall schedule. • Overall, the Zips will face seven opponents who qualified for the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Of those seven, four will make the trip to FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field where the Zips have lost just once since 2007. • Key early regular-season match-ups include a trio of challenging contests at College Cup qualifier Creighton on Aug. 31, versus Indiana (Sept. 7) and at Notre Dame (Sept. 9). The path doesn’t get any easier from there as the Zips will host nationallyranked programs St. John’s (Sept. 14) and South Florida (Sept. 16) before beginning MAC play at Bowling Green on Sept. 22). • In all, the Zips, who will compete in 18 regular-season matches, will play seven games against the MAC – its highest total since 1999 following the addition of new affiliate member West Virginia – and five versus schools from the Big Ten, including a trip to Columbus to take on Ohio State on Oct. 23. ZIPS ON THE AIR • Seven regular-season matches, including six home games, will be carried locally on FOX Sports 1350 AM (WARF) with veteran Zips’ play-by-play voice Steve French on the mic. The 2012 radio broadcast schedule includes the following games: Date Opponent Time (ET) Aug. 24 vs. Florida Gulf Coast 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 vs. St. John’s 7:00 p.m. Sept. 16 vs. South Florida 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 vs. Florida Atlantic 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 vs. Michigan 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 vs. West Virginia 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Ohio State 8:00 p.m. • Furthermore for the third straight season, the Zips will be featured on FOX Soccer Channel as part of the NSCAA College Game of the Week. Akron will have a national audience when it hosts St. John’s on Sept. 14 at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field at 7 p.m.
