AT H L E T I C D I R E C T O R ’ S W E L C O M E Zips Athletics had another banner year for our students, coaches, and fans. Men’s Track and Field pole vaulter Shawn Barber became the first three-time NCAA Champion in Zips Athletics history with a sweep in the indoor/outdoor pole vault. Women’s Basketball student-athlete Sina King was the 2015 MAC Player of the Year. Men’s Soccer, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Men’s Indoor Track and Field, and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field all won Mid-American Conference Championships, and Rifle won the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference Championship. Our Zips’ student-athletes continued to excel in the classroom with an overall grade-point average (GPA) of 3.025 for the 2014-15 academic year. More than 300 of our student-athletes made the Dean’s List with a 3.5 (or above) GPA with 24 student-athletes earning Presidential recognition with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Zips Athletics Family lost two beloved members too soon. In October 2014, we lost Men’s Basketball Director of Operations Dan Peters. Coach Peters’ battle with pancreatic cancer continues to inspire us all and will continue to inspire us through an annual game, #4PetesSake. Earlier this month, we lost Bob Jorgensen, University Marching Band Director Emeritus and Professor Emeritus and husband to Anne Jorgensen, our Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services. Bob was a beloved member of the Zips’ family and brought joy to young and old through his love and passion for music. As we kickoff the 2015-16 athletics season, we will be revamping our brand to display the “Z” logo more prominently with our sports teams and in our venues. The “Z” logo will make us the only athletics program in the country to be identifiable by the letter Z, building on the uniqueness of the Zips’ name. We would like to thank our loyal fans. We need your continued support, especially in the stands. We look forward to seeing you at our events again next year.
Nathan J. Mortimer, Interim Director of Athletics

SHAWN BARBER One of the greatest individual campaigns in the history of the Akron track and field program was turned in this past season by junior pole vaulter SHAWN BARBER, who captured a pair of national titles en route to becoming a three-time national champion and six-time All-American.
His achievements were recognized with his selection as a finalist for the AAU James E. Sullivan Award, also known as the “Oscar of sports awards and is older than the Heisman, honors the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States.
Additionally, Barber is one of three finalists for The Bowerman Award. The honor marks the first time a student-athlete from Akron, or even the MAC, has been named as a finalist for the Bowerman Award.
Perform was an understatement for Barber this season as he won 17 of the 19 competitions in which he competed and owns two of the top-four jumps in the world this spring.

OUR BRAND We launched a campaign to revamp our brand with the transition to the “Z” logo as the primary mark of Zips Athletics. The primary use of the “Z” logo will make Zips Athletics the only athletics program in the country to be identifiable by the letter Z, building on the uniqueness of the Zips’ name. Beginning this summer, Zips Athletics will transition its brand from the “Head A” logo to the “Z,” including a refresh of GoZips.com. The first facility to see the “Z” logo is the court inside James A. Rhodes Arena. The arena floor, which was resurfaced in May, now features a giant blue and gold “Z” at center court. Over the next couple of years, Zips fans will see the transition to the “Z” logo across all of Akron’s sports facilities, team gear, and fan apparel.
