AKRON ZIPS ONE SWEET RIDE • Akron, which swept Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament titles en route to advancing to the NCAA’s Round of 16 for the fifth consecutive season, recorded one of the best campaigns in program history in 2012. • The Zips (18-1-3) were defeated just once last fall – coming in a short-handed 3-1 decision at No. 17 Notre Dame – ran off 15 consecutive victories over the finale two-thirds of the season and recorded the 10th-longest consecutive shutout streak in NCAA history with eight straight clean sheets from Sept. 14 to Oct. 16. • After earning the No. 1 ranking in the country in the final national coaches poll of the regular season, UA was awarded the No. 5 seed and a first-round bye for the NCAA Tournament. The Zips defeated Michigan, 2-1, at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field in the second round before falling in penalty kicks, 5-4, to visiting Creighton the following week. ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS • By running the table during the regular season against the MAC with a perfect 7-0 record and then sweeping their way through the league tournament, the Zips established an NCAA record by running its conference unbeaten streak to 47 matches (44-0-3). • Senior goalkeeper David Meves further established himself as one of the best netminders in college soccer history during the 2012 campaign. While leading the Zips to a 1-0 win at Michigan State on Oct. 31, the Illinois native

became the NCAA’s all-time shutouts leader with the 51st clean sheet of his career. Meves would go on to notch three more shutouts the rest of the way to finish with 54 during a historic four-year career at UA. NO PLACE LIKE HOME • The Zips went 10-0-2 at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field in 2012 where they out-scored opponents 29-3 and logged nine shutouts. Historically speaking, there has been no better home field advantage in the country than the one enjoyed by the Zips, who put together an unbeaten streak of 48 matches (44-0-4) from 2008-11 to set an NCAA record and have lost just once in its last 51 contests at home. • Moreover, Akron went the whole season without trailing at home in 12 matches, spanning 1,120 minutes of play, and have trailed just six times (for a total of 82 minutes) at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field since the start of the 2008 season. ZIPS RACK UP INDIVIDUAL AWARDS • Following the season, a number of Zips

received national recognition for their accomplishments on and off the field. Headlining the list was Scott Caldwell, who was the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, a Hermann Trophy semifinalist, a Senior CLASS finalist and the NSCAA Scholar All-America Player of the Year. Caldwell finished the year with nine goals, including a trio of game-winners, a team-high 10 assists and started all 22 matches. • Caldwell, a First Team honoree, was also one of four Zips named to the NSCAA All-America list. Joining Caldwell was Chad Barson (First Team), David Meves (Second Team) and Wil Trapp (Third Team). • Akron also landed four players on the Academic All-America Team, including First Team honorees Chad Barson (3.99 GPA, Biology), Reinaldo Brenes (3.90, International Business) and Caldwell (3.94, Accounting). Meves (3.77, Corporate Finance) earned Second Team acclaim. • It was a break out season for Brenes, who paced the Zips’ powerful attack with a career-high 11 goals, including four game-winning strikes. The junior found the net at least once in seven of eight matches from late September to the end of October, highlighted by the first hat trick of his career in a 4-0 rout of Buffalo on Sept. 22. • In all, Brenes was one of 10 Zips to earn All-MAC honors, including Dillon Serna, who was named the league’s coNewcomer of the Year.

IN THE NCAA • Since 2007, The University of Akron men’s soccer program has posted the highest winning percentage in the nation (.849) with an overall record of 110-13-16, heading into the 2013 campaign. NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S SOCCER WIN. % (2007-2012) School Record Win. % 1. Akron 110-13-16 (.849) 2. Maryland 101-23-14 (.783) 3. Connecticut 90-21-21 (.761) 4. North Carolina 91-28-20 (.727) 5. Wake Forest 87-29-18 (.716) • The Zips have advanced to the national championship game in back to back seasons in 2009 and 2010. After falling to Virginia in penalty kicks in ‘09, Akron made history with a 1-0 victory over Louisville the following year. It was the first team national championship in school history for any sport. • UA has made six straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2007-12), earning a first-round bye in all but one season. The Zips have advanced to the NCAA’s Round of 16 in each of the last five years. • The Zips have assaulted the NCAA record book over the course of the past four seasons. Fueled by one of the greatest defensive seasons in college history, UA matched an NCAA record by posting a perfect 23-0-0 record heading into the College Cup in 2009 en route to its runner-up finish. Akron didn’t allow a single goal during the NCAA Tournament that year and finished with 19 shutouts for the campaign, which represented the second-highest total all-time. Furthermore, its goals-against-average (0.27) and shutout percentage (.760) were ranked third-best in NCAA history.

10 • GoZips.com/ZipsMSOC

• Akron then matched another NCAA record by posting its 11th consecutive shutout in 2010, including notable cleansheet victories against then-ranked No. 4 North Carolina (3-0), No. 3 Wake Forest (2-0) and No. 2 Tulsa (4-0). • Another historic milestone fell in 2011 when the Zips set the all-time NCAA mark for the longest home unbeaten streak. Akron pushed its run to 40 games with a 5-0 rout of Cleveland State in the season opener at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field to break the original standard held by Tulsa, which went unbeaten in 39 games at home from 1988-’92. • The Zips would remain undefeated on their home field for eight more matches, extending the all-time record to 48 contests (44-0-4). The streak came to a close when Michigan State escaped with a 1-0 win in the final regular-season match on Nov. 2 with a second-half goal despite being out-shot 17-5 for the contest. • In 2012, Akron extended its run of unbeaten matches in league play to 47 after posting a 2-0 win over Northern Illinois in the Mid-American Conference Tournament title game at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field. Since the start of the

2007 season, UA has gone 44-0-3 against MAC opponents, including postseason play. • Since 1961, the Zips have advanced to the NCAA postseason 27 times, including each of the past six seasons and 11 of the past 12.

IN THE CLASSROOM • The Zips matched a program high when four players were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team in 2012. Leading the way was NSCAA Scholar Player of the Year Scott Caldwell, who earned First Team honors. Joining Caldwell (3.94, Accounting) on the first team were Chad Barson (3.99 GPA, Biology) and Reinaldo Brenes (3.90 International Business). David Meves (3.77, Corporate Finance) was a Second Team honoree. • In all, the Zips have produced 19 Academic All-American honors in its history, dating back to the 1998 season. • Current Major League Soccer standout Kofi Sarkodie was the first Zip to earn NCAA Academic All-American of the Year honors for men’s soccer in 2010. Sarkodie was one of four UA players to be named to the Academic All-America Team during that historic season. Sarkodie, who was a Hermann Trophy semifinalist and Soccer America’s Player of the Year, finished his career at the Akron with a 3.959 cumulative GPA as a biology major. • Akron has long been associated with academic excellence. In addition to posting a team GPA of better than 3.0 in 2012, the Zips finished second in Division I the previous season with a cumulative mark of 3.44. The remarkable feat follows years that saw the Zips post GPAs of 3.43 in 2010-11 and 3.33 in 2009-10.

HISTORY

• Akron has produced the MAC Player of the Year in each of the past eight seasons. Moreover, six Zips have earned the league’s Newcomer of the Year honor in as many seasons dating back to 2007. • In 20 seasons in the MAC, the Zips have produced 136 AllMAC honorees, including a conference-record nine first-team selections in 2010.

IN THE PROS • Since 2006, the Akron coaching staff has produced 21 players currently competing in Major League Soccer or overseas. In 2012, the Zips sent six more to the pros when Chad Barson (Columbus Crew, pictured above), Scott Caldwell (New England Revolution), Wil Trapp (Columbus Crew), DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle Sounders) and Dillon Serna (Colorado Rapids) signed Homegrown Contracts with their MLS clubs while David Meves (Portland Timbers) was the third overall pick of the MLS Supplemental Draft. • Additionally, nine Zips have had their names called during the first round of the MLS SuperDraft, including a league record five selections in the first eight picks in 2011 following the Zips national championship season. • Akron broke a second MLS record that day as seven UA players were chosen in the first two rounds, the most from a single team in draft history. • Steve Zakuani was the program’s first No. 1 overall draft pick at the 2009 SuperDraft. The Hermann Trophy finalist and nation’s leading scorer (20 goals in 23 matches) in 2008 was the first ever pick of the then-expansion Seattle Sounders. • Since then, the Zips have had two players drafted as high as the No. 2 overall pick. Darlington Nagbe, who was the school’s second straight Hermann Trophy winner, earned the distinction in 2011 when he was drafted by Portland and Jamaican striker Darren Mattocks followed suit in 2012, going to the Vancouver Whitecaps. • Teal Bunbury, the 2009 Hermann Trophy winner, would be the first of three Zips taken at the 2010 draft when Sporting Kansas City made the athletic striker with Canadian roots the No. 4 overall pick. Adding to the list that season were teammates Blair Gavin (No. 10) and Ben Zemanski (No. 47), who were each drafted by Chivas USA. • Cameron Knowles, who is a current assistant coach on the Portland Timbers staff, became the Akron first player in program history to be drafted into MLS when Real Salt Lake took the Zips defender in the supplemental round (No. 37 overall) of the 2005 draft.

on to play professionally either in MLS or overseas since 2007. The success of this formula was no more evident than at the 2011 MLS SuperDraft where seven Zips had their names called, including five with the first eight selections overall, to set a pair of MLS records. During Embick’s time at Akron, the Zips have posted the highest winning percentage in the nation with an overall record of 110-13-16 (.849), including a 35-0-1 (.986) mark in Mid-American Conference play, while securing five conference tournament titles, six trips to the NCAA Tournament and two appearances in an NCAA final. Embick has also served as a staff coach with the Under-16 and Under-18 U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s Cleveland Internationals club team for the past three years. Prior to joining the Zips, Embick spent four seasons (2003-06) as the head men’s soccer coach at Missouri Baptist University where he led the Spartans to a record of 47-21-8 and the program’s first NAIA regional tournament berth in 2003. In all, Embick spent six seasons at MBU, including two seasons as a graduate assistant (2000-01) and one season as an assistant coach (2002). During his time at Missouri Baptist, Embick also served as assistant coach for River Cities FC of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) whom he helped lead to a 13-2-1 record in its inaugural season and an appearance in the WPSL national final. A 2000 graduate of Indiana Wesleyan, Embick, 34, was named an All-American by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) in 1998 and 1999 as a player. He was also an NAIA honorable mention All-America honoree in 1999 and was twice named to the All-Mid-Central Conference squad.

HISTORY

ared Embick, who had previously served as the Zips’ associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the previous six seasons, officially became the seventh head coach in the history of The University of Akron men’s soccer program in December of 2012. Embick, who was the 2010 National Assistant Coach of the Year, has been a key component of the Zips’ dominant run in college soccer – culminating with the school’s first team national championship in any sport in 2010 – since joining the staff in 2007. The Zips’ historic 2010 campaign capped off one of the most impressive two-year runs the college soccer world has ever seen. During that time, the Zips, who lost just once during the regular run of play over 50 matches, posted an overall mark of 45-2-3 while becoming the first school to advance to national championship games in back-to-back seasons since Indiana accomplished the feat in 2003 and 2004. Leaving little doubt of its strength of schedule, Akron achieved this success while playing the most difficult competition in college soccer with the No. 1-ranked RPI in the final regular-season release in 2009 and the No.1-ranked non-conference RPI in 2010. Fueled by one of the greatest defensive seasons in college soccer history, the Zips matched an NCAA record by winning 23 consecutive matches on their rampage to the College Cup and national runner-up finish in 2009. UA didn’t allow a single goal during the NCAA Tournament that year and finished with 20 shutouts – representing the second-highest total all-time. Furthermore, it’s goals-against average (0.27) and shutout percentage (.760) were ranked third all-time. The Zips then matched another NCAA milestone in 2010 by registering their 11th consecutive shutout in a 4-0 rout at home over No. 2 Tulsa before a sold out crowd and nationally televised audience. The win also represented the 29th game of UA’s 48-match home-unbeaten streak, which shattered an NCAA record the following season. Records continued to fall in 2012 when Akron ran the table against the Mid-American Conference with a 7-0 mark during the regular season before capturing its fifth league tournament title in six seasons. In doing so, UA pushed its conference unbeaten streak to 47 matches (44-0-3) to set another NCAA standard. In fact, one would have to go all the way back to the 2006 season to find the Zips’ last loss to a MAC foe. Due in large part to Embick’s recruiting efforts, Akron identified and secured some of the best prospects in the country – and around the world – with top-five recruiting classes in each of the past five seasons. The Zips’ classes of 2012 and 2009 were ranked No. 1 in the country, while the classes of 2011 and 2010 each received a No. 2 designation. More importantly, UA’s recruits have flourished in the Zips’ system, which features a style of play that is attractive and attack-oriented, yet effective on both sides of the ball. In total, Embick recruited or helped develop 20 players who have gone

Capellas, who spent the previous nine seasons as head coach at Hiram College, is a two-time North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Coach of the Year and earned NSCAA Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors in 2008 after guiding the Division III Terriers to their first postseason appearance in 12 years. He was also a finalist for the NSCAA National Coach of the Year award following that historic campaign. Capellas will serve as the Zips recruiting coordinator as well as assist in scouting and daily training, among other responsibilities. In all, Capellas compiled an overall record of 84-67-13 at Hiram and developed the school’s first NSCAA All-American, an Academic All-American, three players who went on to play for their country’s respective national teams, 12 all-region selections and 46 all-conference honorees. As the league’s coach of the year in 2012, Capellas led the Terriers to a regular season record of 15-2-1 and a No. 12 national ranking (NSCAA) – the program’s highest in school history – last October. Prior to his time at Hiram, Capellas served as an assistant coach at Case Western Reserve University and his alma mater, Marshall University, where his recruits were key contributors to the Thundering Herd’s highest national ranking in school history. A four-year letterwinner and starter at Marshall, Capellas was a two-time team captain, an Academic All-American and the school’s Student-Athlete of the Year in 1997. In addition to coaching at the collegiate level, Capellas was also the coach of the boys team at St. Joseph’s High School in Huntington, W.Va. In 1998, he helped lead the team to a 201-1 overall record, including a season-long No. 1 ranking, and a state runner-up finish. Capellas is a native of Warren, Ohio and a graduate of Howland High School. He and his wife, Maureen, have two children, Zacharias and Clare.

tuart Dobson returns to the Zips staff for his second year after spending the previous four seasons on the coaching staff at UC Santa Barbara. Dobson was named Akron’s goalkeepers coach on Aug 15, 2012. Under Dobson’s guidance, Zips’ goalkeeper David Meves became the NCAA’s all-time leader in shutous (54) and finished his phenomenal four-year career with a career goals-againstaverage of 0.50, which tied for fifth-best in NCAA history in 2012. The NSCAA Second Team All-American recorded clean sheets in eight straight matches that fall and finished with a total of 16 in 22 contests. In all, Meves and the Zips held opponents to just eight goals for the season and didn’t allow more than one goal in any single contest. Meves was selected by the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer with the third overall pick of the supplemental draft in January of 2013. Dobson also served in the same capacity with the Gauchos where he mentored three straight net minders to the professional ranks in Dan Kennedy (Chivas USA), Kyle Reynish (Real Salt Lake) and Sam Hayden (Ventura Fusion USL). Well respected among his peers, Dobson, who enjoyed a 15-year professional playing career as a goalkeeper in both the U.S. and overseas, was brought into the U.S. Women’s Under-23 National Team training camp last year to evaluate and develop goalkeepers for selection to the U-23 team and eventually the full side. Dobson, who also coached goalkeepers for the women’s team during his time at UCSB, is currently the ‘keepers coach on the Super Y-League National Team and spent the 2007-08 season coaching the New Jersey Ironmen of the Major Indoor Soccer League where he worked with former U.S. National Team captain and Major League Soccer MVP Tony Meola. A native of Beverley, England, Dobson has worked with some of the most accomplished and recognizable names in thehistory of soccer in this country. He moved to the U.S. at the age of 21 toattend the University of Portland, where he succeeded eventual U.S. National Team goalkeeper Kasey Keller. While earning his degree in business management, he spent four seasons playing under former U.S. National Team assistant coach Clive Charles.
