TIMELINE OF EVENTS

Site Location:

Dharmaraya Swamy Temple Rd, Halsurpete, Nagarathpete, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560002 The Badami house, also known as the George Oakes building is a 100 yr old building. It was earlier used as a preview theatre, KCA Office, later housed a SBI bank and KSTDC office.

CHALANA CHITHRA UDYANA

The main intent of this project is to bring back the historic value of the site before the renovation of the Badami house. It was earlier used as a production office for the Kannada film industry.

Strength: • Rich cultural heritage • Cultural and religious centres around the site • Easy access of all the market spaces • Rich film history in the site • Presence of diverse communities around

S

W

Opportunities: • Religious and cultural activities around the site • Cubbonpete market area • Tapping into the rich history of the site

O

Weakness: • Densly populated area • Traffic congestion • Prone to flooding due to improper drain lines • Pedestrain access to the site is only from the skywalk

T Threats: • All the native community crafts are now fading away as jobs in the goverment and IT sector is found to be lucarative amongst the next generation. Though their culture is continued to be seen, most of their arts are fading.

SITE PRECINCT ANALYSIS Migrants have been coming to bengaluru in search of a better livelihood ever since the initial expansion of the pete. The initial migrants, mostly from neighbouring states, adopted Kannada as their primary language for communication. It was mainly during the colonial period that the city became a Multi-cultural hub.

INFERENCES

ACTIVITY MAPPING

Ecology and natural context:

• Due to the presence of large open parks such as Cubbon park and Lalbagh park with sampangee and Lalbagh lake, there will be better underground water level present in the areas around. • Presence of sewer lines.

Cultural context:

• Bengaluru, being known as a trade/commercial district, the character and function remains constant in a city focussed on its IT boom. • The religious institutions in and around the site retains the old significance in terms of culture and traditions followed by the people. • As high activity zones are mainly the important nodes and hotspots, the commercial activities lead to heavy movement in the day, and gradually reduces during the night.

Political and Economic factors:

• According to the Transit Oriented Development policies, the site precinct lies in the intense and standard zones. • A large percentage of commercial spaces around the site consist of secondary markets.

CHALANA CHITHRA UDYANA “The introspective planning was the main idea of my design, the form slowly evolved to fit in all the programs”

The spatial planning has been done in such a way that the users can have a holistic view of the entire premises from the Open Air Theatre

The Open Air Theatre being the most important element that holds the entire space together, situated at the centre gives a wholesome visual access to the other programs. The central open space given for regular recreational activities can be used by the neighbourhood in addition to hosting events.

Morphology Diagram Chalana Chithra Udyana is a fun interactive film museum.

Massing of the space Connection between two levels gives the illusion of extra space, also enriches the functional and aesthetic possibilities of a building.

SWOT ANALYSIS

Site Location:

MRC Nagar, Adyar, Chennai, Tamilnadu 600 The site is located at MRC nagar, a large well-developed neighbourhood in South Chennai. Located on the banks of Adyar river, the locality is bounded by Besant Nagar to the East, Buckingham Canal to the West, Thiruvanmiyur to the South and Adyar River to the North. Being one of the premium areas in Chennai, Adyar has clear segregation of residential and commercial developments.

Strength: • River as a natural resource and a view. • Mixed landuse patterns. • Good Ecological wealth. Weakness: • Encroachment along the river. • River stewn with garbage pollutes which makes it unfit for use. • Lack of connectivity between the banks. Opportunities: • Mixed use development along the river edge can enhance the economy and also protect from encroachment. • Enhance the water quality with riparian edges. Threats: • Soil erosion due to extensive development. • Floods.

Places of recreation

KALA THARANGINI

The intent of the project is to create a spine of mixed use development along the riverside and provide public spaces that foster cultural creativity in the city. To provide neighbourhood-level social infrastructure and recreational facilities. The proposal facilitates the community in providing education, entertainment, and recreation which will bring fitness and health for the residents and workers.

MERITS: • Axial Planning. • Divergent View. • Activity space oriented towards the river edge.

DE-MERITS: • No play of solids and voids in the built form. • Entrance is not defined.

MERITS: • Play of spaces creating interesting forms. • Entrance is defined • Public spaces to the edge of the site

DE-MERITS: • Inward planning • Not responding to the merits of the site.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The opening of the portal widens as the user progresses close to the Adyar river, taking the river view as an advantage to frame its effortless continuity.

MERITS: DE-MERITS: • Responds to the site and context • Pockets of • Play of solids and voids in the form informal courtyard • Divergent view spaces created • Public spaces to the edge of the site. • Activity space oriented towards the river edge.

The visitors passing by will get a view of the project from where they stand, which will act as an inviting approach to attract more users. The widening of the portal will maximize the view of the Adyar River and consequently making the cone of vision more dynamic. The functional activities emerge from the center and face out towards the building’s exterior, maximising visual links to the outdoor environment.

KALA THARANGINI

The river starts at Manimangalam and the water from the Chembarambakkam lake joins the river near Thirumudivakkam. It flows into the Bay of Bengal, at a place called Adyar. The word ‘Adyar’ could mean a river that gets blocked. The reality is that the river, which is several hundred meters wide, has a mere 5m entry into the sea, that is only for the tidal water to ebb and flow.

The Pallavas and the Chalukyas fought a battle here. As the Chalukya dynasty spread over Maharashtra and Karnataka, they wanted to capture Kancheepuram, and a battle was fought at Manimangalam. Battle of Adyar was fought on the banks of the Adyar river by the French East India company men and the Nawab of Arcot’s forces over St.George Fort.

The functions of the civic centre has been arranged in such a way that the interative activities are alongside the river edge. The semi public activities are near the entrances, so that it encourages people to use the whole site.

In the present, one finds the city dotted with accessible venues that aren’t quite as elite. Hence the proposal consists of spaces that cater to all kinds of performance arts.

Chennai has always been a culture-rich city, be it dance, architecture, theatre, or music. Earlier in 1980-90, an evening of entertainment would consist of the rich making their way to a ticketed concert or dance recital at The Music Academy. To date, there are two profound auditoriums in Chennai. One being the Music Academy and the other being the Narada Gana Sabha.

WORKSHOPS

Ramming the layers of mud to make the seating Ramming the earth for strong foundation Laying the formwork for the seating

Laying fine aggregate for the base Laying coarse aggregate

FINAL OUTCOME

Arranging fine and coarse aggregate

The objective was to design a ecological and economical seating space inside the college premises. So, we made a seating space using the rammed earth technique. We experimented with the coloured oxides, adding some colour to the seating. Used materials like marble tiles, bamboo sticks, terracota tiles as the counter, making it aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to sit on and rejoice the space.

WORKSHOPS

Wood cut printing Workshop

Wood cut printing is a relief printing technique. We carve an image into the surface of the block of wood with the wood cutting tools and leaving the printing parts level with the surface while removing the non-printing parts.

WORKSHOPS The Caterpillar

The objective was to design the pathway that acts as a transition space from the entrance of the college premises to the architecture block. We were given a couple of materials to choose from and to work with. The materials we chose were cloth, bamboo, pots and twine. We came up with a prototype design and we repeated the same design throughout the space.

MISCELLANEOUS: Sketches, Illustrations, Photography

Sketches from my experience at Pondicherry

MISCELLANEOUS: Sketches, Illustrations, Photography I started to experiment with illustrations during the lockdown and yes indeed the lockdown helped with time, and I got to see what my niche really was. I really enjoy painting the beach, animals and try to sketch the places that are really close to my heart. Making illustartions has become a part of my daily life as it helps me observe a lot of details.

I Akshara Rammurali, hereby declare that all the works in this portfolio contains only original works done by me. All drawings, models, photographs, sketches and texts are my own.
