“ A head full of dreams and a mind ready to face challenges, I am a young budding architect. I love to learn new things, make friends and work towards achieving the best possible output in whatever I do. Architecture, for me is not a destination, but a journey. I strongly believe that the process counts as much as the product does. And I wish to explore as much as I can on this journey for which I think, exposure is the best medium. I look forward towards getting a good platform, which helps me to get the best out of me.

Housing Scheme at Punawale, Pune. LOCATION :

PUNAWALE, PUNE

TYPE :

MASS HOUSING

YEAR :

FOURTH YEAR (2016-2017)

TOTAL BUILT-UP AREA :

27,000 sq. mtrs (approx.)

The location of the site is on the outskirts of Pune, near the old Mumbai – Pune highway. The project looks at housing all the economic sections into one housing scheme and enhancing community living. But not at the price of their individual privacy. The location is close to Hinjewadi IT park, weekly travelers from the city of Mumbai and as well as the local residents of Pune. As a result it sees various categories of audience. The odd shape of the site made a challenge for zoning and planning of the site.

1 SITE ANALYSIS

VIEWS AROUND THE SITE • • • •

Easily accessible. Virtually flat. Two wells on site. Almost all surrounding land is agricultural land.

WEAKNESS

• • •

Weird shape of site. Disturbance from highway Site is huge and no development around, hence security problems.

OPPORTUNITY

• •

Shape of site could dictate the zoning for master plan. The part that connects to highway could be made into a green reserve.

THREAT

• •

Heavy traffic from highway and the noise pollution. Distance from city as well as other daily needs.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT AND MASSING MODELS

• • • • •

In a lifestyle where we are drifting away from each other day by day under the name of privacy, should we as designers try to make a change in this approach ? Restricting building heights, I tried making a better community living space where people could interact better. Human beings can relate to ground up to a height of 5 storeys. As a result all building heights were kept the same. One of the major problem of this layout was the foot print. Many buildings were needed because of height restriction, and hence leaving almost no open spaces on ground for recreation.

Tall building heights could help make a distinguished landmark along the highway.

The interesting skyline formed by the play of varied heights of buildings, also add to city’s skyline and urban fabric. It also caters to the general public requirement of “privacy”. As the building rises above, it frees up space on ground. Hence more space is available for recreational uses. Unwantedly, here we promote individual living rather than a community living.

Center for Performing Arts, Nashik LOCATION :

ALONG THE GHATS, NASHIK

TYPE :

PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

YEAR :

THIRD YEAR (2015-2016)

TOTAL BUILT-UP AREA :

4,500 sq. mtrs. (approx.)

Set in the old and religious city of Nashik, this center had to act as a hub for cultural activities of the city. Surrounded by a dense and sensitive fabric which portrayed the rich heritage of city, the center aimed on addressing the city’s fabric as well as the culture. The site is situated beside the Gadge Maharaj Dharamshla, along the ghats of the river Godavari. A project dealing with complexities related to services, structure and site planning, as well as to demonstrate an integrated understanding of the complex relationship between the form, function, context and aesthetics in the built form.

The building in itself is a drama. A constant play of dynamic forms, proportions and the surprise element, I try to entertain every occupant with the mere existence of the form of the building. Sitting on the banks of Godavari, the building makes an attempt on creating a dialogue with this holy river.

Yaatri Prabodhan Kendra, Lakkundi, Gadag LOCATION :

LAKKUNDI, GADAG, KARNATAKA

TYPE :

TOURIST INFORMATION CENTER

YEAR :

SECOND YEAR (2014-2015)

TOTAL BUILT-UP AREA :

1,000 sq. mtrs. (approx.)

Gadag, with almost 100 Jain temples, is a city with rich cultural heritage but often ignored. The site is located 11 kms from Gadag, in the small village of Lakkundi. Many step wells and A.S.I. preserved temples exist around. The culture and fabric of the area was very sensitive. The site is virtually flat but has a pre-existing ‘BAVI’ or a step well which is the key element of this design. An attempt has been made to try and decode the culture, building techniques, details and preserve the step well. Creation of a hub, which promotes cultural activities and also helps to bring prosperity to this village, was the focus of this design exploration.

The entire village was maximum ground+1 structures. Wooden columns, stone walls with white stucco, small openings and timber flat roofs were some of the distinct characteristics of the buildings. A dynamic profile in elevation, that adds interest to the viewer’s eye. The proportions were controlled such that the blocks were 6mtr at one side and 3mtrs on the other.

Lokranjan, Nashik LOCATION :

NASHIK

TYPE :

COMMUNITY CENTER

YEAR :

THIRD YEAR (2015-2016)

TOTAL BUILT-UP AREA :

200 sq. mtrs. (approx.)

Lokranjan, a space for public entertainment and get together, was an attempt to make a structure that merges with the existing site so well that a passerby falls in question – what came first ? The space had to be accessible to everyone, and hence the entire built mass is surrounded by a serpent shaped ramp. Even if the structure is partially underground, it uses only natural daylight and ventilation for its needs. Skylights flood the interior with diffused light. Ferrocrete structure, inspired from Hussain Doshi gufa, help to create a free flowing form.

The old city of Nashik, which sits along the ghats of river Godavari, is the core of the city. Surrounded by various heritage structures, the city also hosts one the biggest public gatherings in the world- “The KumbhMela”. The city of Nasik sits on nine hills, and hence the study area allowed us to study how various building typologies reacted to contoured site. A study over a period of five days was conducted and various buildings and public spaces like dharamshalas, vadas, markets and ghats were studied.

Starting from Victoria bridge to Gadge Maharaj bridge the river front area also called as Ram Ghat, where the Deccan Ganga- Godavari, flows. Ramkund is the main site for Khumbmela which happens every 12 years. The Ghats have around 30 Temples and 5 temple complexes. Rituals are carried out at the Ramkund everyday throughout the year. Different activities take place during different times of the day on the ghats.

House for a Coppersmith, Pune –

The Drawing Board, Rohan Builders Competition GROUP WORK

LOCATION :

TAMBAT ALI, PUNE

TYPE :

RESIDENTIAL

YEAR :

FOURTH YEAR (2016-2017)

TOTAL BUILT-UP AREA :

The brief required a house to be designed in an extremely compact site between two existing walls of adjacent buildings on either sides. The requirements were – a studio for the coppersmith, a free space to rent out, and a residence for 5. The concept was to design a building sensitive to its locality, urban fabric and also a building which is sustainable. Maximum light is taken through balconies and projecting full height windows. A wind tower open towards south and west takes care of the ventilation. The material, red brick was chosen so that the building blends with it surrounding structures easily.
