can say that some 80% of my most exciting dives in all these years of my career had dolphins involved.

Meeting them in the wild is both fascinating and unexpected.

O

ne of the most striking episodes happened to me in the Galapagos. At dawn we moored by Wolf Island, and after 45 minutes of diving with several sharks, I and my buddy started our safety stop at five meters. That´s when I realized there were many dolphins around us.

or some time we listened to their sounds without seeing them, and then suddenly a big male, some three meters long, began to circle us, with quick passages and graceful evolutions. He was accompanied by two other males, and they for med a group tasked with distracting us so that the rest of the pod could pass in safety. rança - a typical behavior of the species, also seen when boats approach a pod.

his was my first unxerwater dolphin encounter and I was already glowing with joy when the male took off and retur n after a while with a famela and her calf. The three animals came really close, swimming slowly and tightly together. I can´t tell if it was just my imagination, but I and my buddy had the clear impression he was introducing us to his family. Whatever his intentions it was intesely moving.

fter this episode there were dozens of other encounters in several sites around the world, and none was less exciting.

I

magine an animal almost as intellginet as humans, which communicate through echos and is self-aware. These are the dolphins! Enchanting, fast, caring, sociable. There are many curiosities about these attractive animals, and here are some: Dolphins are marine animals, capable of jumping up to five meters above the surface of the water, swim up to 40 Km/h and dive to great depths. their food consists basically of fish and squid, and they can live between 25 and 30 years, giving birth to a single calf reach time.

olphins are naturally playful. No other animal has such a varied array of behaviors not directly related to basic biological needs, such as feeding and mating.

EFFICIENT COMMUNICATION

D

olphins use echolocation, a system of high-frequency sounds which allows them to locate prey, avoid obstacles and predators, and communicate across long distances.

back as echos and dolphins can receive these through organs located in the head and jaws, carrying infor mation to the ear and then the brain. Echolocation is pretty efficient, and much better than any sonar invented by

humans. Through its use, dolphins can lear n size, texture and density of any given object or prey.

olphins are among the most sexually active animals in the world. Besides primates, they´re the only ones who make sex just for pleasure. They can stage orgies, engaging with whatever number of partners - of both sexes! - they might find. Indeed, homosexuality exists among dolphins.

Some go the extra mile using sexual toys, such as bones and twigs, to spice up things. I had the opportunity of witnessing and recording mating behavior in Satay, Egypt, and they sure seem to enjoy it!

One eye closed, the other open: that´s how dolphins sleep. They can´t ender a deep sleep state because they breathe air voluntarily. So they “shut off” only a part of their brain and enjoy a semiconscious sleep, with an eye open and the other shut.

olphins experience a long gestation, the female being pr fgenant for 12 to 17 months depending on the species. Furthermore, they are very protective and carinh towards their calves. The notion of family is clear and evident,

with well-defined roles for parents.

They are also extremely intelligent, with logical thinking and the capacity to process infor mation in a quick and efficient way.

A dolphin brain is only smaller in size to that of a human, and it is believed that they are more evolved than that of apes.

olphins are conscious about death. They are aware of their mortality and suffer over it, showing signs of stress and sadness.

They can even commit suicide. Besides, when a dolphin dies, others try to save it by carrying it to the sur face.

I

n a different evolution, dolphins moved from land to the sea. Everyone thinks that evolution means fish got tired of the monotony in the bottom of the sea, developed pseudo-legs and waded into land. But dolphins did exactly the opposite.

There is clear indication that they were land predators which shunned the effort forced upon them by gravity by migrating into the water.

One basis for this theory is the dolphin embryo, in which four underdeveloped limbs awaiting definition can be seen.

Dolphins, therefore, would have lived more and more in the water environment and limbs lost relevance, having been modified by evolution. Just a few tens of millions of years...

he orca is a dolphin. It may reach some seven meters and people call it Killer Whale. This however is unfair. “Why?”, you´ll ask.

Because she isn´t a killer?

No. It´s because it isn´t a whale, but a dolphin. The nickname is therefore not fair to the poor whales. But a killer it sure is, one of the

most skilled hunters of the oceans.

Orcas have quite an appetite. They eat fish, sharks including the fear ful great white, whale calves, penguins, squid and even other dolphins.

DOLPHINS ARE STEALTH HUNTERS

here´s no doubt that dolphins are smart animals. To some extent their clever ness becomes astute: they are rather resourceful hunters. They cooperate in fishing. A small group manages to position in such a way as to erasily corral hundreds of fish, ensuring an abundant meal for everyone in the pod.

DOLPHINS CAN BE TRAINED TO FIGHT The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union produced some reports which are seldom mentioned. One such story says that the soviets sold “combat dolphins” to Iran for their use in detecting or planting underwater mines in enemy territory, using their powerful sonar and orientation capabilities.

Dolphins can be rapists. In 1977, scientists found several bodies of dolphin calves. No one beleived that it could be attributed to their own kin, but it does seem that dolphins can become killers sometimes. One grim discovery was that they can sexually abuse other dolphins without distinction, involving males, females, young or old, and even human beings if they get the chance.

Tuna fishers usually look for dolphin pods, which also seek the fish, and some cooperation occurs

there. Dolphins find the tuna schools and fishermen throw their nets, encircling the fish and letting dolphins feast, only afterwards pulling the nets aboard, so both species benefit.

DIVING WITH CAPTIVE DOLPHINS: THE DARK SIDE OF THE INDUSTRY

M

ost people have good intentions when they seek an excursion or park where they can dive with dolphins. If they were aware of the truth behind those dolphins´”smiles”, however, they would be horrified about what they are actually sponsoring.

Japan is the biggest provider of dolphins in the world. During the capture operations, many animals considered “less attractive” are slaughtered and sold as meat.

Dolphins are taken from their families, abducted from their natural habitat. Even calves are taken, although they should be with their mothers from three to six years before weaning.

I

n the wild, dolphins can swim more than 100km in a day. In captivity, however, they are confined in concrete tanks, in chemically treated water. This is particularly traumatic for them, since they communicate through

echolocation.

Dolphins are often kept in captivity with incompatible individuals and due to the precarious handling are unable to evade fights.

Many develop painful conditions, such as stomach ulcers; still others die pre-

maturely because of captivity stress. Several diseases can be transmitted from human visitors to dolphins, including viral and bacterial infections such as salmonella. People can also be bitten and have bones broken during interactions.

DOLPHIN RESEARCH AND BREEDING CENTERS

R

oatan and Curaçao harbor projects for breeding and studying captivereared dolphins, and undertake specific activities with these animals. Unlike other dolphinaria, here they stay in a marine environment, in large fenced encolsures, with adequate depth, and are frequently “taken out for a swim” with their trainers in the open sea, getting back to their families after such dives. There are cases of dolphins which went away for a few days and then came back on their own as if nothing had happened.

uraçao has a rehabilitation center for children with special needs, with social impair ments and autism, where dolphins are used as part of the treatment.

Children undertake in-water therapy sessions with the dolphins, playing and interacting with them, yielding extraordi-

nary results in their treatment. I had the opportunity of witnessing one such session, duly authorized by the parents, and I was able to see autistic children who seldom smile or refuse to interact with others light up with laughter thanks to playing with their doplhin friends, who approach the children with great

care and fondness, allowing to be touched and inviting afor a ball game. One´s left with the absurtd feeling that these animals know exactly the purpose and how much good they are doing.

Tulum is an archeological site encompassing an ancient Mayan walled city. It is located along the coast of the caribbean Sea, Southwest Mexico, in Quintana Roo State, also know as the Mayan Riviera Held as sacred by the Mayas, cenotes are the entrance to the caves and mesmerize tourists and divers with their crystalclear waters and great visibility.

In Mexico these are some 7,000 of them, often coinciding with archeological sites.

uring our last trip in 2016, to Curaçao, e had real trouble to balance diving with the needs of Rafael, at that time our 22-month old baby, in particular as regards to feeding.

That´s whu we chose Mexico as our next dstination, specifically Cozumel, in an all-inclusive dive resort.

T

he trip was planned to per fection: we would fly from Brasília to Rio (Galeão airport) where we would over night, then continuing on to Bogotá, and then Cancun. Upon arrival we would over night in Cancun and then travel to Cozumel, where we would stay for seven nights, on a plan with two boat bdives in the mroning for five days, and one in the after noon for four days, in a total of 14 dives.

fter Cozumel, we would spend four nights in Playa del car men, and would do two cenote dives before heading back to Brazil. To make it per fect we took aunt Hevelyn with us as a helping hand, taking care of her godson during the dives. Baggage ready, we boarded the plane to Rio de Janeiro.

We´ve had some surprises on the way, themain one being the airport employees strike in Bogotå, forcing a re-routing through Lima - not nough to ruin the trip though. Luckily our little Rafael, now two years and eight months old, faced it all with much good humor and was a great partner during the entire jour ney.

Arriving at Cancun we went straight to the first hotel, Cara Maya, an excellent choice with large and clean rooms, great common spaces, and good Mexican food and vibes. We took time to stroll and get to know central Cancun, leaving us with a taste for staying longer if we could. But we had toleave for Playa del Car men to hop on the Cozumel ferry.

H

ere´s the first tip: it might be chaper to rent a car in Cancun and cross on the car ferry than paying taxis. Another one: exchange dollars for pesos. All places do accept dollars, but the exchange rates are a rip-off.

We finally arrived at Cozumel, where we stayed at the Hotel Resort Cozumel.

We used the first day to rest and enjoy the natural pool, even as it rained.

On the second day we checked in at the dive shop and did only a checking dive to ensure all gear, including for u/w photos, was in per fect condition.

I took the opportunity to shoot some pix at the local reef, which even being much less than the house reefs in Bonaire and Curaçao still had lots of macro life.

during the third day we would staert our dive routine, but a Norther n wind slapped the coast and the harbor master banned all diving for safety reasons.

We were in paradise but couldn´t dive. Our option was to visit the other side of the island, with paradisiac beaches and an unforgettable sunset.

ut in the fifth day the wind strenghtened again, and the forecast said more wind was coming in the next few days. All dives were cancelled. We then decided to retur n early to Playa del Carmen, asked for a reim-

bursement on the dives and used the money to stay at the Oceabn Riviera Paradise, a very good resort for families. We also searched for alter native dives, and found Phantom Divers´ operation really professional and congenial! We did two

boat dives, a deep one reaching almost to 30 meters, and then another in the shallows right near the coast.

O

n the seventh day we changed hotels and moved into the Sandos Playacar, also a very nice family resort, and upon moving I decided to keep the camera with me to make more records of the trip. The taxi driver insisted on leaving his business card should we needed his services to get back to Cancun.

That was really lucky, as upon arriving in the hotel room I realized I had left the camera in the car! I panicked.

Just one day before going to the cenotes! With lots of help from the hotel front desk I was able to locate the taxi driver, who brought the camera back the next mor ning... unbelievable! I gave the honest driver a good tip and hired him to take us back to Cancun in three days´time.

he best was reserved for the end!

We did the cenote called “The Pit” first. It is a deep trench, with an entry helped by stairs.

The whole operation involves pickups, walking, and going through a small passage, allowing a hypnotizing beam of light to penetrate.

For the second dive we went to famed “Dos Ojos”, with two openings and a labyrinth of channels connecting the two entrances. A shallow and fun dive! I lost count of how many photos I took that day.

Luckily some came out real nice... it is challenging to shoot with natural light which varies so much.

y the end of the trip we´d done only seven of the 16 dives planned. Although much less than plahoped for and with some surprises, we sense we´ve had much more fun than expected. The godmother also had lots of fun. So, when everyone has fun, the photos always come

out better, gaining in context and meaning! As my cousin jan would say, “a trip is a succession of things gone wrong which goes well in the end”. Now that Rafael is getting bigger, we´re planning to retur n to a place where the dives are easier. Bonaire, we will soon be there!

etween December 5 and 12, 2017 ABISUB, the Brazilian Association of Underwater Images, received entries for the largest online competition of u/w photos in Brazil.

In total 36 competitors ran in two divisions, 19 in DSRL/ Mirrorless and 17 in Compact.

Participants were asked to send four images in the following categories: Wide Angle, Close-up, Fish and Thematic Macro. this latter focusing in the theme INFINITE BLACK BACKGROUND, chosen through the SABISUB Facebook page.

A

ll photos had to be taking in Brazilian waters.

Approximately 140 images were voted upon by jurors according to the above categories. The jury had notorious knowledge on underwater photography and voting happened between December 14 and 21.

Beam angle without a diffuser is 110° and Inon says it has a “robust and durable frame, protected against the heat generated by the flash (especially during burst shooting)”, a recurring problem of the Z240 which ended up frying its processor.

Inon LAUNCHES NEW Z330 FLASH

A

fter Inon ceased production of its well-known Z240 flah earlier last year, there´s been much interest about its potential replacement. It would be unavoidable that images and specifications of the new Inon flash would leak. It is called Z330 and uses the same body design as the Z240.

Other features include a rotating shade to prevent and help disperse backscatter, avoiding light leaking through dome ports (towards the sand), a “super large” bubble-shaped diffuser and bright controls, with large buttons for easy handling.

The controls layout and battery compartment are identical to those of the Z240 and the built-in LED focus light has a 220 lumens output.

orn in 1964, Saygun Dura worked as a photographer and director of photography for an advertisement company between 1989 and 1996.

Ever since that he continued his advertisement photographer career in his own studio.

ura has offered seminars on Photography for Advertising and Creative Photography, as well as lectures on Advertisement in Photography, Studio and Light Techniques in several universities, such as in the Graphic and Photography Departments of Bahçeşehir University, Graphic Department of Doğuş University and the İstanbul Technical University Fine Arts Faculty, between 2004 and 2014.

hose that touched me the most were the Cenote cave systems of the Yucatรกn Peninsula in Mexico. the shark dives in Florida, photos we took in the Thistlegorm wreck in the Red Sea, and Raja Ampat, which harbors fascinating marine life.
