The June 28th editorial of the Bogotá newspaper warns about the conditions in which thousands of immigrants in search of a better life arrive to cross the border between Mexico and the United States: “The immigrants are transported in vehicles that usually have no ventilation, much less air conditioning systems, in a desert region that normally exceeds temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius. It is not the fi rst time that this type of tra c ends in tragedy. [...] It is urgent to fi nd a solution, beyond extreme border closures or police operations. The pandemic has provoked a social and economic crisis of as yet unsuspected scope that is causing records to be broken by desperate immigrants. Until September 2021, the authorities detected 1.7 million undocumented immigrants at the borders, among them thousands of Colombians. But if the reality does not improve at the source, immigrants will continue to try and die in the most terrifying way. No more indi erence. El editorial del diario de Bogotá, del 28 de junio, advierte sobre las condiciones como llegan a pasar la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos miles de inmigrantes que buscan una vida mejor. Dice: “Los inmigrantes son transportados en vehículos que habitualmente no tienen ventilación ni mucho menos sistemas de aire acondicionado, en una región desértica que normalmente supera temperaturas de 40 grados. No es la primera vez que este tipo de tráfi co termina en tragedia. (…) Urge hallar una solución, más allá de los cierres extremos de las fronteras o de los operativos policiales. La pandemia provocó una crisis social y económica de aún insospechados alcances que está haciendo que se batan récords de inmigrantes desesperados. Hasta septiembre de 2021 las autoridades habían detectado 1,7 millones de indocumentados en las fronteras, entre ellos miles de colombianos. Pero si no mejora la realidad desde el origen, los inmigrantes seguirán intentándolo y muriendo de la manera más aterradora. No más indiferencia”.

“They are the victims of a business that is worth around 14 million dollars a year. They are the merchandise of big criminal organizations that, with the reinforcement of the migratory prohibition, have found a very lucrative activity”. This is how analyst Ricardo Raphael frames it when dealing with the tragedy of the migrants in San Antonio. He adds: “The higher the walls, the more money can be extracted from family members living in the United States when they want to bring their loved ones. A trip that used to cost between 4,000 and 5,000 dollars now costs between 10,000 and 15,000. In the area where this catastrophe occurred, the Sinaloa cartel and the Jalisco cartel New Generation operate on both sides of the border. For them, drug tra cking continues to be very lucrative, but migrant smuggling is right behind them. Zoom: the martyrs of San Antonio do not deserve to be one week’s news. They are the bodies and the faces of a humanitarian confl ict that will not stop until the policy of stupidity is overthrown”. “Ellas son las víctimas de un negocio que ronda los 14 mil millones de dólares anuales. Son la mercancía de las grandes organizaciones criminales que, con el reforzamiento de la prohibición migratoria, han encontrado una actividad muy lucrativa”. Así lo plantea el analista Ricardo Raphael al ocuparse de la tragedia de los migrantes en San Antonio. Agrega: “Mientras más altos sean los muros, más dinero puede extraerse de los familiares que viven en los Estados Unidos cuando quieren traer a sus seres queridos. Un viaje que antes costaba entre 4 y 5 mil dólares hoy se eleva a los 10 y 15 mil dólares. En la zona donde ocurrió esta catástrofe operan, en ambos lados de la frontera, el cártel de Sinaloa y el Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación. Para ellos el trasiego de droga sigue siendo muy lucrativo, pero justo detrás viene el tráfi co de migrantes. Zoom: los mártires de San Antonio no merecen ser noticia de una semana. Son los cuerpos y los rostros de un confl icto humanitario que no se detendrá hasta que la política de la estupidez sea derrocada”.
EL NUEVO DÍA PUERTO RICO STOP THE MIGRANT MORTALITY
The July 2nd editorial of the Puerto Rican newspaper points out the tragedy of migrants in San Antonio “forces us to rethink the strategies to attend the humanitarian crisis su ered by millions of people fl eeing misery, political persecution and lack of opportunities. We are in the presence of one of the worst chapters in the history of unauthorized immigration from Mexico to the U.S. [...] Last May there were 239,000 unauthorized entries. Texas is the main hub of this tra c of Mexicans and Central Americans and, now, of Haitians. The discussion [...] revived this week with the tragedy in San Antonio and the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court authorizing Biden administration to end the program [...] commonly called ‘Stay in Mexico’. [...] the Government hopes to end the miserable conditions that nearly 70,000 people have su ered. [...] It is time for concerted action to address the conditions [...] of the displaced, and to emphasize the legal prosecution of those who profi t from this misfortune: the multi-million dollar human tra cking mafi as”. El editorial del diario puertorriqueño del 2 de julio señala que la tragedia de migrantes en San Antonio “obliga a repensar las estrategias para atender la crisis humanitaria que sufren millones de personas que huyen de la miseria, persecución política y falta de oportunidades. Estamos en presencia de uno de los peores capítulos en la historia de la inmigración no autorizada desde México a Estados Unidos. (…) En mayo pasado hubo 239,000 entradas no autorizadas. Texas es el eje principal de ese tráfi co de mexicanos y centroamericanos y, ahora último, de haitianos. La discusión (…) revivió esta semana con la tragedia de San Antonio y la decisión del Tribunal Supremo de Estados Unidos que autoriza a la administración Biden a poner fi n al programa (…) comúnmente llamado ‘Permanecer en México’. (…) el gobierno espera acabar con las miserables condiciones que han sufrido cerca de 70 mil personas. (…) Es la hora de una acción concertada que atienda las condiciones (…) de los desplazados, y ponga énfasis en la persecución legal de los que profi tan con esta desgracia: las multimillonarias mafi as del tráfi co humano”.
On June 30th, the editorial of this Honduran media stated that “migration policies show their great failure, which is presented with each collective misfortune like this week’s, as an opportunity to confront human tra cking. The great tragedy of San Antonio, one of the greatest in decades, again presents the accusing fi nger from one side and the other, but without solutions from its origin to discourage the massive departure from our country [...] As has been repeated ad nauseam, there is a shared responsibility and to the extent that prosperity and opportunities are priorities in Government plans there will be no need to undertake the long, dangerous and tragic path. There have always been massive displacements of people, almost always in the name of survival, but in the last few years mafi as have entered into the tra cking of people, in groups or individually, to reach the American Union”. The laments have been joined by the announcement of the creation of an Immediate Action Group to pursue the tra cking networks, but credibility and confi dence in the promise is minimal”. El 30 de junio, el editorial de este medio hondureño manifestó que “las políticas migratorias muestran su gran fallo que es presentado con cada desgracia colectiva como la de esta semana, como oportunidad para enfrentar el tráfi co de personas. La gran tragedia de San Antonio, una de las mayores en décadas, vuelve a presentar el dedo acusador de un lado y otro, pero sin soluciones desde su origen para desalentar la salida masiva de nuestro país (…).Como se ha repetido hasta la saciedad hay una responsabilidad compartida y en la medida en que la prosperidad y oportunidades sean prioridades en los planes de gobierno no habrá necesidad de emprender el largo, peligroso y trágico camino. Siempre ha habido desplazamientos masivos de personas, casi siempre en nombre de la supervivencia, pero en los últimos años han entrado mafi as en el tráfi co de personas, en grupo o individualmente, para llegar a la Unión Americana”. A los lamentos se ha unido el anuncio de la creación de un Grupo de Acción Inmediata para perseguir las redes de trafi cantes, pero la credibilidad y confi anza en la promesa es mínima”.
