Welcome to The University of Alabama!

First and foremost, congratulations on your decision to join us at the Capstone. On behalf of myself, the Panhellenic Executive Board, and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, I want to welcome and wish you the best of luck during your time at The University of Alabama. Greek life provides some of the most valuable experiences UA has to offer and we hope that you will choose to become a member of our community. As the largest Panhellenic Association in the country, we provide a home to thousands of members and set the standard for not only our students, but also students nationwide. The Alabama Panhellenic Association (APA) is the governing body for the 18 National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities and 1 affiliate member chapter. We work closely with our other three Greek councils: the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and the United Greek Council (UGC). Our hope is that as a potential member of our Panhellenic community, you will continue these valuable relationships between our councils. As you prepare for your journey as a potential sorority member and UA student, I want to extend a challenge to you: I challenge you to envision the person you want to be and to make the decisions that will help you to become that person. During this time, it is important to focus on your identity, your values, and your personal growth. Keeping these in mind will help you make the best decisions possible for your next four years, as well as for life after college. Each of our sorority chapters is unique, but are all founded upon the same values of academics, involvement, and service. Recruitment Directors Roll Tide & Welcome to The University of Alabama!

We are so excited to introduce you to your collegiate and Panhellenic experience during your first week at Bama. Here at the Capstone, we are proud to be a part of the nation’s largest Greek community. Your decision to join a Panhellenic sorority is one that commits your collegiate years to focus on service, connection, personal development, and a continued goal of improving our campus and community. College lasts for four years, but the memories you will make and the bonds of sisterhood you will gain last for life. Over the course of the week, you may see yourself in one chapter or another; you may think you already know where you want to run home to on Bid Day. We encourage you to keep your mind open to opportunity in every chapter that you see. You are not just joining a single organization, but a whole community of Panhellenic women who are excited to get to know you and welcome you with open arms. ABOUT THE COUNCIL

The Panhellenic Council at The University of Alabama is the governing body of the Alabama Panhellenic Association (APA). The Alabama Panhellenic Association is composed of 18 National Panhellenic Conference sororities and 1 associate member sorority on campus. The Alabama Panhellenic Executive Board is composed of 12 executive board members, 1 delegate, and 2 junior delegates from each sorority. The women who serve on the Executive Council are current sorority members who have disaffiliated from their chapters during Recruitment in order to provide unbiased planning and support for all involved in the recruitment process. The Alabama Panhellenic Association provides activities and programs throughout the year to better the collegiate experience for Greek women on UA’s campus. Furthermore, APA strengthens UA by promoting scholarship, philanthropy, safety, and collaboration among all women on campus.

The Panhellenic Delegates serve as liaisons between their individual sororities and the Panhellenic Executive Council. By attending biweekly meetings, serving on committees, and volunteering where needed, these women help direct their sororities in working together as a Panhellenic community. The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is the umbrella organization for the 26 international women’s fraternities and sororities. Welcome to the Capstone! We are so excited that you are now a student at the University of Alabama and are thrilled that you chose to participate in the largest recruitment in the nation. For the past eight months as Recruitment Team Directors, we have worked tirelessly to select and train the most exceptional team yet and they can’t wait to meet you! The Panhellenic Recruitment Team is comprised of sorority members who have disaffiliated from their chapters to help Potential New Members throughout recruitment. The team is made up of Sigma Rho Chi and Judicial Board members. Think of your Sigma Rho Chi as a mentor. Their main job is to help you by providing support and guidance throughout the week. The Judicial Board members are also an important resource for you. Like a Sigma Rho Chi, they can also give you guidance, but Judicial Board members also help to uphold your rights as a PNM and ensure that everyone is following the rules. At Convocation, you will meet your assigned Sigma Rho Chi and group. You will spend a lot of time with your Sigma Rho Chi during recruitment, so use her as a tool to help navigate this experience. Remember, your Sigma Rho Chi has been in your shoes as a Potential New Member and participated in recruitment with their chapter. Sigma Rho Chi and Judicial Board members are trained together, so both groups of women can help you at any time during Recruitment. We recognize that Recruitment can be hectic and stressful at times. We encourage you to talk to the members of the Panhellenic Recruitment Team throughout the week. Get to know your Sigma Rho Chis and Judicial Board members. ABOUT THE RECRUITMENT TEAM

Recruitment is an exciting and memorable experience, but it can be an emotional time as well. Recruitment counselors, referred to as Sigma Rho Chis, are undergraduate women at UA who have disaffiliated from their chapters to serve you throughout recruitment week. Judicial Board members have gone through training to ensure that recruitment rules are being followed and everyone has a fair experience.

SIGMA RHO CHIS

Sigma Rho Chis, who have participated in recruitment themselves, have been through an extensive semester-long training program in preparation for recruitment week. They have your best interests at heart and are available to help you during the Week of Recruitment by serving as an impartial and confidential listener and friend.

JUDICIAL BOARD The Recruitment Judicial Board oversees the recruitment process and ensures

a fair recruitment experience for the potential new members and chapters. The Recruitment Judicial Board handles any violations during the Week of Recruitment, and are available to help the Sigma Rho Chis if needed. Members of the Recruitment Judicial Board will keep track of timing during recruitment parties and will be able to assist you with any problems that you may encounter throughout the recruitment process. 13

RULES & POLICIES BASIC RECRUITMENT DEFINITIONS A Potential New Member (PNM) is a woman who is registered and/ or intends to participate in Fall Primary Recruitment at The University of Alabama. A Potential New Member is also any high school student (grades 9-12), who is considering coming to The University of Alabama or anyone with the intent to participate in UA Fall Primary Recruitment in the coming year. An active member is an initiated member of a sorority currently in college. An alumna member is an initiated member of a sorority who is no longer an active member of her chapter. A sorority alumna will retain her alumna status during Recruitment.

SUMMER DOS AND DON’TS

No contact, with regards to recruiting for a specific chapter, can occur between sorority members and Potential New Members after May 1. Examples: letters, emails, phone calls, texts and comments on social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and GroupMe messages), etc.

Normal contact (work, volunteer, family, etc.) can occur after May 1, but conversations should be limited to the benefits of participating in Recruitment and should not be specific to pledging any one organization. Sororities cannot have gatherings for the purpose of Recruitment that include Potential New Members after May 1. Examples: teas, parties, trips, etc.

Potential New Members cannot stay overnight with sorority members or have any contact with sorority members during summer orientation sessions. Examples: spending the night at a member’s house, eating dinner or attending activities. Potential New Member BILL OF RIGHTS

1. The right to be treated as an individual. 2. The right to be fully informed about the Recruitment process. 3. The right to ask questions and receive true and objective answers from Recruitment Counselors and members. 4. The right to be treated with respect. 5. The right to be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized. 6. The right to ask how and why and to receive straight answers. 7. The right to have and express opinions to Recruitment Counselors. 8. The right to have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with Recruitment Counselors. 9. The right to make informed choices without undue pressure from others. 10. The right to be fully informed about the NPC Unanimous Agreements implicit in the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) signing process. 11. The right to make one’s own choice and decision and to accept full responsibility for the results of that decision. 12. The right to have a positive, safe, and enriching recruitment and new member experience.

Sigma Rho Chi and Judicial Board members will make sure that these rules are upheld during Recruitment. Individuals who have concerns about the Recruitment process, are encouraged to contact The Dean of Student’s Office at 205-348-3376.

Potential New Member BEHAVIORAL CONTRACT

I will attend all Primary Recruitment Events for which I have received an invitation for each round of Primary Recruitment.

I will respect myself, other potential new members, chapter members, Recruitment Team members, and university staff at all times. I will refrain from making offensive comments and/or actions towards any and all of the aforementioned individuals at all times.

I will communicate regularly with my sorority Recruitment Counselor and will let her know if I decide to withdraw from the recruitment process.

I will exercise proper time management throughout the week of Recruitment and understand if I miss a Primary Recruitment Event for a reason not approved by APA, I will not be allowed to reschedule the event for which I have missed.

I will refrain from communicating with chapter members or individuals affiliated with chapter members outside of Primary Recruitment. This includes, but is not limited to, in person conversations and/or communication via phone calls, written correspondence, text messages, Snapchats, etc.

I will not make any disparaging remarks about any APA chapter or individual member. This includes, but is not limited to, remarks made during in person conversations and/or any posts made to social media accounts (such as Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter,YouTube, etc.) that are deemed inappropriate by APA.

I agree to treat the chapter videos and recruitment parties as confidential. I will not share any video in its entirety, or recordings, clips, screen shots, and/or quotes from a video or recruitment party. I understand that any breach of this agreement could result in referral to UA Office of Student Conduct and/or the APA Judicial Process, as well as the disciplinary action discussed later in this document.

I understand that I am not allowed to bring any items, including but not limited to bags or phones, into recruitment parties unless previously approved by APA.

I will participate fully in each recruitment event. I will engage in respectful conversation with chapter members.

10. I understand that if I sign my MRABA on the night of Preference Round, I am bound to this document and the chapter that extends me a bid. This means I am considered ineligible for an invitation to membership from any other APA chapter until Fall 2023. 11. I understand that the consumption of alcohol and/or any illegal substance use during the week of Primary Recruitment, on Bid Day, and up to 24 hours after Bid Day events have ended, is strictly prohibited by APA and may result in APA disciplinary sanctions and/or University of Alabama disciplinary sanctions. 12. I understand that, upon joining a chapter, I will be responsible for all financial and academic obligations of membership. 13. I will follow all expectations, rules, policies, and procedures set forth by the University of Alabama, the Alabama Panhellenic Association, and the National Panhellenic Conference shared with me by my recruitment counselor, the APA Executive Council, and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life staff. 16

Should I break any of the statements listed above, disciplinary action will be taken as listed below: FIRST OFFENSE: • Meet with Recruitment Counselor • Review first offense conduct • Review Potential New Member code of ethics SECOND OFFENSE: • Meet with an APA Executive Council member • Review second offense conduct • Review Potential New Member code of ethics THIRD OFFENSE: • Meet with an APA Advisor • Review third offense conduct • Possible dismissal from the Primary Recruitment Process. This will be reviewed on a case-by-casebasis. Please note, the Alabama Panhellenic Association and the University of Alabama Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life reserve the right to proceed straight to dismissal from the Primary Recruitment Process, given the severity of the offense committed, which will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Exceptions to this document will be allowed in cases of unusual or extreme circumstances, which will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The Alabama Panhellenic Association will work to accommodate Potential New Members who are unable to attend recruitment events due to an NCAA sporting event or practice, a work commitment, Bama Bound orientation session, religious observation, health or medical circumstance, family emergency, etc.

MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT ACCEPTANCE

Binding Agreement

So what does this mean?

ABOUT THE MRABA

The document on the opposite page is the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA), formerly known as the “Preference Card.” The MRABA is a binding agreement that is effective for one calendar year. By signing this document, you as a Potential New Member agree that you are willing to accept a bid for membership from any sorority that you rank on the MRABA. Please note that if you receive an invitation to membership (a bid) from any sorority that you ranked on your MRABA, then you are bound to that group for one calendar year (August 2022-August 2023). Most importantly, if you receive a bid from any sorority that you have listed on your MRABA, and you choose not to accept it, you are not eligible to participate in Continuous Open Bidding (COB) in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023.

WHEN DO I SIGN THE MRABA? If you receive an invitation to the Preference round, you will make your final selection at the conclusion of your last party. Here you will rank the chapter(s) you visited on Saturday, August 13 in a preferential order. Once you complete your rankings, you will sign a copy of the MRABA. Please note that once the MRABA has been turned in either electronically or in person to a representative of the Alabama Panhellenic Association, it cannot be altered or changed. Prior to signing the MRABA, you have several options to consider. We suggest that you thoroughly reflect on these before signing your MRABA. MRABA OPTIONS 1. You may choose NOT to complete the MRABA, thereby withdrawing from recruitment. If you choose this option, you are eligible to accept a bid for membership from any sororities participating in Continuous Open Bidding. A small number of sororities may be able to recruit a limited number of women through the COB process after Primary Recruitment if their chapter is below the Campus Total; however, this is not guaranteed. 2. You may choose to list any sorority whose preference event you attended and from whom you are willing to accept an invitation to membership (a bid). Please note that you should NOT rank a sorority on your MRABA that you are absolutely not willing to accept a bid for membership. If you match with a sorority that you listed on your MRABA, it is important to note that you are bound to that sorority for one calendar year (August 2022-August 2023), regardless of whether you officially accept their invitation for membership or not. 3. You may choose to limit your choices to just one sorority whose preference round event you attended and you are willing to accept an invitation to membership. You must understand that if you chose to single intentional preference, then you are not guaranteed to receive a bid for membership. Only Potential New Members who maximize their options and list ALL of the chapters that they attended during the preference round are guaranteed to receive a bid for membership during Primary Recruitment. If you do not receive an invitation to membership (a bid) from any of the sororities that you have listed, you are eligible for Continuous Open Bidding (COB).

ALABAMA PANHELLENIC ASSOCIATION (APA): APA represents NPC and is the coordinating body for the 19 NPC women’s organizations on The University of Alabama campus.

ALUMNA: An initiated sorority member who is no longer active in a collegiate chapter. BID: a formal invitation to joining a sorority or fraternity.

NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL (NPHC): A

council composed of the nine (“Divine Nine”) historically African American Greek-letter organizations, of which the Alabama NPHC has 4 sororities and 4 fraternities. NEW MEMBER: The period when a woman joins a sorority but is not yet initiated into the chapter. PHILANTHROPY: A national and/or local charity that a sorority sponsors, donating time and money through service in order to promote human welfare.

CAMPUS TOTAL: The allowable chapter size as determined by the College Panhellenic.

POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER (PNM): Any women who is eligible to participate in Primary Recruitment or Continuous Open Bidding.

CONTINUOUS OPENING BIDDING (COB): The period in which a sorority that has not met the Campus Total is able to recruit members.

PRIMARY RECRUITMENT: A designated membership recruitment period during which a series of organized events are held for the purpose of selecting new members.

INTAKE: Also referred to as Membership Intake, it is a process through which NPHC and UGC sororities select new members.

QUOTA: The number of women a sorority may pledge during primary or informal recruitment.

INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL (IFC): The governing body for 34 fraternities at The University of Alabama, many of which are affiliated with the NorthAmerican Interfraternity Conference (NIC). SINGLE INTENTIONAL PREFERENCE: When a PNM attends more than one preference event but limits her membership selections by not listing all her sorority options on her MRABA. LEGACY: A PNM whose mother or sister is an alumna of, or active member in, a particular sorority. MRABA (MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT ACCEPTANCE BINDING AGREEMENT): A document that each Potential New Member completes immediately following the preference round of parties, ranking her membership preferences. This is a binding agreement, stating that the PNM is willing to accept a bid from any sorority she lists. NATIONAL PANHELLENIC CONFERENCE (NPC):

Founded in 1902, NPC provides support and guidance for its 26 member inter/national sororities and women’s fraternities and serves as the national voice on contemporary issues of sorority life. UA has 18 NPC affiliated sororities.

QUOTA ADDITIONS: A procedure used to help PNMs who maximize their options during Recruitment receive an invitation to membership LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION/REFERENCE: A written letter or statement from an alumna, on the sorority’s official recommendation form, introducing and recommending a Potential New Member for membership. Also called a “rec.” SNAP BID: A procedure used at the close of bid matching to help chapters reach quota prior to bid distribution. Each chapter has financial requirements, which families should discuss before their student joins a sorority. Financial requirements may include membership dues, a meal plan, house fees, as well as room and board if you live in the sorority house. Greek Essential MEAL PLAN

Given that the majority of the Panhellenic sororities have their own mandatory meal program, the University automatically downgrades new members to the Greek Essential meal plan (at a cost of $623 per semester) when they join a sorority that has a full-service kitchen. If you join a sorority with a full-service kitchen, the chapter provides 14 meals a week. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily Monday-Thursday, and breakfast and lunch are available on Fridays. The Greek Essential meal plan provides an average of 2-3 meals per week at the on-campus dining hall, perfect for weekends when the chapter is not serving meals. Students who would like more than 55 meals per semester may change their meal plan to one of the following: Bronze (90 meals per semester), Silver (125 meals per semester), or an All Access plan. SORORITY LIFE AT UA IS AN EXPERIENCE UNLIKE ANY OTHER

The University’s commitment to the Greek community is equal to the Panhellenic Association’s commitment to the University. UA’s Greek Community, the largest in the nation, provides an opportunity for new students to become involved in an organization that promotes campus involvement and personal growth.

If you join one of the 19 Panhellenic sororities at the Capstone, you also become a member of the Alabama Panhellenic Association. The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) was founded in 1902 and is the governing organization for 26 inter/national women’s fraternities and sororities. Each member group is autonomous as a social, Greek letter society. Members are represented on more than 600 college and university campuses in the United States and Canada, and currently there are more than 5,300 alumnae associations comprised of over 3 million sorority women.

WHAT TO EXPECT AS A NEW MEMBER STUDY HALL HOURS: Each chapter requires a certain number of study hall hours to be completed each week during your first semester at UA. Sororities also implement a number of educational programs to assist members in their academic pursuits. PANHELLENIC EVENTS: APA gives the opportunity for new members to attend various educational events throughout the year. These events address relevant issues students face today and will help with their transition into college and Greek life. PHILANTHROPY EVENTS: Each chapter enjoys serving its national and local philanthropy. Philanthropy events are hosted to promote unity within the chapter and the Greek community while helping a worthwhile cause.

RECRUITMENT EVENTS: In the spring, chapters host recruitment workshops to help their members prepare for next year’s Fall Primary Recruitment. As a new member, you will have the opportunity to attend these events. ACTIVE PARTICIPATION: As a new member, you will be required to attend new member meetings in addition to chapter meetings. You will also be encouraged to participate in Greek or Campus-wide events such as Homecoming. These events are not only fun but provide an opportunity for you to meet other members of the Greek community. Each chapter has programming during the new member period to help their new members adjust to college life.

Recruitment at Alabama begins on Saturday, August 6, 2022, and concludes with Bid Day on Sunday, August 14, 2022. For many of you this will be your first impression of Tuscaloosa and Greek Life at The University of Alabama. We sincerely hope that you enjoy all that we have planned for you!

VALUES-BASED RECRUITMENT

We strive to focus on Values Based Recruitment in our Panhellenic community. We emphasize academics, equality, inclusion, and service, and we encourage you to be conscious of these values this week. We also encourage you to consider which chapters have values that align with your own as you move through the recruitment process.

The week of Primary Recruitment consists of four rounds of events, each structured to show you what each sorority has to offer. You will also have a chance to meet current sorority women in each of the chapters. Take the time to ask them any questions that you may have about activities, financial obligations, scholarship, new member programs, and campus life in general. It is very important that you keep an open mind during this process and carefully decide where YOU feel you fit best in the Greek Community at UA. Please recognize that Primary Recruitment at UA is a mutual selection process in that both the Potential New Members and the individual sororities are making choices. All Potential New Members will view videos from every sorority during the first round of Open House, but the remaining three rounds (Philanthropy, Sisterhood, and Preference) are by invitation only. Throughout the invitational rounds of recruitment, Potential New Members will be able to rank/prefrence the chapter-specific parties they wish to attend and the sororities will make decisions regarding the women they want to invite to their parties. Potential New Members should understand that they may not receive invitations to all the parties that they would like to attend. While this may seem overwhelming, the Panhellenic Executive Board and Sigma Rho Chis will explain this process in detail at Convocation and throughout the week. 27

Recommendation

CHAPTER SPECIFIC LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

A Recommendation/Reference (also called a REC or RIF) serves as your introduction to the sorority so their members can get to know you in advance of Primary Recruitment in the fall. These official forms, which are unique to each individual sorority, are provided by the national organization for their alumnae members to fill out on behalf of potential new members. Letters of recommendation are OPTIONAL and NOT required to participate in recruitment. PNMs are encouraged to reach out to alumnae to secure a recommendation letter for each chapter participating in Primary Recruitment. The alumna does not need to be a UA graduate; however, she must be in good standing with her inter/national organization that has a chapter on UA’s campus. Please note that each sorority has its own policy on letters of recommendation, which can be found on the next page and on our website, www.uapanhellenic.com. If you ask a sorority alumna or collegian to write you a letter of recommendation, or if an alumna or collegian offers to write you one, it is customary that you provide the individual writing the rec with a professional headshot (4x6), an unofficial copy of your academic transcript, a social resume (a sample social resume can be found on (www. uapanhellenic.com), and a stamped envelope that is pre-addressed to the chapter’s preferred address. It is also customary to send a thank you note to the women writing your letter of recommendation. Most recommendation letters can be turned in digitally on the chapter’s national website or via email to the UA chapter. SUPPLEMENTAL ACADEMIC LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION While chapter-specific letters of recommendation are preferred, women unable to find an alumna from each of the recognized sororities at UA to write a letter of rec may elect to submit a generic, supplemental academic letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal. The individual writing the letter of recommendation does not have to be/have been a member of Greek organization; however, the letter should speak to your character as it applies to leadership, scholarship, community service, and friendship. Please note that this is an optional feature and, as such, is not a required part of the online application form.

Lastly, it is your responsibility to make sure UA has an official copy of your final transcript. This will be the official grade point average (GPA) shared with each chapter. Please ensure that a certified final copy of your transcript is sent directly to the UA Admissions Office no later than August 1, 2022. LEADERSHIP Leadership opportunities are endless within the Panhellenic community. As a chapter officer or leader, you can develop management and communication skills. You will have the chance to experience different roles in the chapter, from handling finances for a philanthropy fundraiser, to greeting guests during an alumnae dinner. Each chapter also provides educational opportunities to help you refine your time management, leadership, and communication skills. Striking a balance between academic and extracurricular activities is an important part of college life. We believe campus involvement provides a well-rounded college experience. Sororities value leadership, and likewise encourage their chapter members to become involved across campus. Greek life is a direct springboard into campus involvement. This includes student government, special interest organizations, honors societies, homecoming, university ambassador programs, pre-professional organizations, and over 600 other campus groups. Going Greek also provides members with an invaluable network when seeking employment and career opportunities. Greek alumni/ae understand the Greek experience of being both an individual and a team member, desiring to excel both in and out of the classroom, and committing to give back to the community. Through interactions with Greek alumni/ae, you can begin building relationships that may help you in the future.

PHILANTHROPY Philanthropy events at UA demonstrate that Greek women’s interests and concerns extend far beyond the constraints of their own chapters. Sororities give back to the community by sponsoring events throughout the year that benefit different causes. These women raise money and donate their time to both their national philanthropies and the local community. Sorority members actively participate in their own chapter’s philanthropy events as well as support other chapters’ service efforts. Each semester, there are numerous handson opportunities that Panhellenic women participate in. These include cookouts, pancake breakfasts, sporting events, 5k runs, mentoring programs, and many more service-based activities planned by the Greek community. The Alabama Panhellenic Association looks to support campus and community needs by holding events such as Trick-or-Treat on Sorority Row, Holiday Tree Decorating on Sorority Row, and the Easter Egg Hunt at the President’s Mansion. We support efforts such as Tuscaloosa SAFE Center, Circle of Sisterhood, Beat Auburn Beat Hunger, Gamma Peer Educators, and many others on campus, in the community, and throughout the state. You will encounter endless opportunities to support various philanthropies and provide hands-on service.

SCHOLARSHIP Greek-letter organizations were founded on the principle of exceptional scholarship, and each sorority at UA recognizes the importance of scholastic success. In order to remain an active member, women must maintain their grades throughout membership. The sororities at Alabama want their members to do well in school and they will provide additional informational programs to help you achieve your academic goals. Most chapters have study hall hours to assist you with time management and tutoring programs to create an environment in which you can excel. Scholarships are also offered through the Alabama Panhellenic Association, individual chapters, NPC, and many local Alumnae Panhellenic Associations. The four-year graduation rate for Greek students is 17 percent higher than their unaffiliated peers. The academic performance is tabulated every semester to determine an “All Panhellenic” grade point average. Homecomingweek Homecoming at Alabama is a week full of excitement and fun that leads up to the Homecoming football game. Each sorority is paired with an IFC fraternity, as well as a UGC and NPHC organization. Each pairing then participates in a series of competitions in an effort to win the coveted Homecoming Spirit Cup. Some of the competitions include a basketball tournament, bowling tournament, dance competition, and a float competition, followed by a parade through campus and downtown Tuscaloosa. Homecoming Week is the perfect time to bond with women in your sorority and make friends with members in the partnering sororities and fraternities. This all leads up to the football game and crowning of the Homecoming queen. 33

Do not believe any of the rumors you hear. If it sounds too crazy to be true, then it probably isn’t true. Feel free to talk to your Sigma Rho Chis or a Panhellenic Exec member about any concerns you may have.

DESIGNER BAGS? (no need!) You won’t be allowed to take anything into the sorority houses, so leave

your nice purse or bag in your room. This also means that your bag will be laying on the grass outside while you’re attending parties. Keep that in mind when deciding what bag to bring with you during recruitment.

TENT TALK

Be careful what you say about other sororities to those around you. You should always be respectful of others’ opinions, as you never know what connections someone has to a particular chapter.

HIGH STRESS (and humidity)

It’s August in Alabama and trust us, it will be extremely hot! Choose light-weight dresses and colors that won’t show sweat. Comfort during Recruitment is KEY to reduce stress.

Moving In!

The online move-in sign-up process will begin in June 2022. Students who have registered for recruitment prior to June 1 will be able to sign up for an early move-in time through their housing application. Students who do not register before the online move-in signup system opens can email moveinhelp@ sa.ua.edu for scheduling assistance. Students who do not have a move-in time by late July will be assigned a time by Housing and Residential Communities (HRC). At the end of July, all students will receive an email with their check-in date and time, driving directions, and a move-in parking pass sent to their UA Crimson email account. This parking pass must be used during move-in, so be sure to bring it with you. In order to make the move-in process as easy and efficient as possible, the number of students who can move in at each time during the day is limited. Allowing students to continue to select move-in times that are already filled makes the process more difficult for families, students, and volunteers assisting with the process. We appreciate your understanding and your selection of another time if your first choice is already filled. Please arrive on your assigned move-in day and time. If you arrive outside of your assigned move-in period, you will be directed to a holding area and will be required to wait until your assigned time or until move-in operations have ceased for the day. Early move in is available from Wednesday, August 3 through Friday, August 5. Should move in plans be changed, students will be formally notified by email.

Convocation

Convocation, marks the start of Recruitment and will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2022. During Convocation, members of the Alabama Panhellenic Executive Board will give a brief description of the day-byday schedule. Potential New Members (PNMs) will also be assigned to a Sigma Rho Chi group and will meet their leaders for the week. Each participant will be able to pick up two Philanthropy Day t-shirts as they check in for Convocation.

WHAT TO WEAR: Dress is casual. We understand that many of you will be moving in, so please come as you are. T-shirt and shorts are appropriate.

RECRUITMENT WEEK: OOTD’S

OPEN HOUSE ROUND AUGUST 6, 2022 ABOUT: During Open House round of recruitment, you will have the opportunity to watch a video for each of the sororities with your recruitment group. Each video is 5 minutes long and will help you learn more about each chapter- their values, history, signature events, and personality. Similarly, each chapter will have the opportunity to watch your video and get to know more about you. Remember to take good notes. OUTFIT OF THE DAY: You will be watching chapter videos with the rest of your Sigma Rho Chi group so dress comfortably!

REMEMBER: No matter what, it is most important that you feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing. You will want to be focusing on your conversations in the houses, not your outfit!

RECRUITMENT WEEK: OOTD’S

PHILANTHROPY ROUND AUGUST 7, 8 & 9, 2022 ABOUT: Philanthropy Round marks the beginning of invitation-only parties. During this round, you will have the opportunity to visit up to 12 chapters for 30 minutes each. Service is an important part of the Greek experience at UA, and Philanthropy Round will give you a glimpse of the philanthropic work that each chapter participates in. Financial information will also be provided by each chapter you visit during this round. These three days are laid back and so much fun! OUTFIT OF THE DAY: Shorts! Philanthropy round is a great break from wearing dresses, so enjoy this change. While these days are much more casual, we do not recommend ripped or frayed shorts. Additionally, you won’t want to wear anything too short, since you may be sitting on the ground in some houses. You will pair your shorts with the two shirts you receive at Convocation. Remember to wear comfortable shoes!

REMEMBER: Think about what philanthropies are important to you and what service projects you were involved in during high school. This is the most relaxed round of recruitment, so enjoy having fun with the active members while learning more about their philanthropy.

SISTERHOOD ROUND AUGUST 10, 11 & 12, 2022 ABOUT: Sisterhood Round gives you the opportunity to really see the personality of each sorority. During this round, you may attend a maximum of 7 parties, each of which are 40 minutes long. The parties during Sisterhood Round are informative and allow more time for conversations with the sorority women. Participation in this round will allow you to see firsthand the individuality and values of each chapter.

OUTFIT OF THE DAY: During this round we recommend that you wear a nicer dress, jumpsuit, or romper and wedges or heels. You may want to keep a pair of sandals or flip flops in your bag to wear in between houses to give your feet a break! REMEMBER: During this round you should think hard about what you’re looking for in a sisterhood, what you would like to be involved with at UA and who mightl help you achieve those goals. This is a great time to really get to see the personalities and friendships of each chapter.

PREFERENCE ROUND AUGUST 13, 2022 ABOUT: On Preference, or Pref Day, you can attend a maximum of 2 Preference parties. Each of these parties will last 45 minutes. This is the day to really focus on what you want to gain from joining a sorority. An invitation to a Preference event means that the sorority is very interested in asking you to become a member. After participating in a Preference ceremony, you will have the chance to talk privately with a member. During this time, the member may share with you how she made her decision, what her sorority means to her personally and what sisterhood encompasses. This is a very emotional day for many women, so we ask that you are respectful of others and remain silent on the row. After the last party, you will walk silently to complete your MRABA.

OUTFIT OF THE DAY: Preference Day is the most formal round of Recruitment! You should wear a nice dress and heels or nice wedges. You will not want to wear a dress that is too short or tight. An example would be something you may wear to a graduation ceremony or a daytime wedding. REMEMBER: Look around the room at each of the parties you attend on this day. Many of the other women sitting around you could be your pledge sisters, so make sure you feel comfortable. Make sure you focus on your connections, values, and how you feel in each sorority.

BID DAY! Bid Day is the most exciting day of recruitment. You might, however, be sitting or standing outside briefly during the hottest time of the day. While this day may be hot and hectic, it’s a once in a lifetime experience that will start one of your most exciting adventures in college. APA is pleased to continue to partner with ZAP Photography for Bid Day photos, as well as local vendors to offer New Member Packages and Arrangements for purchase. To celebrate the end of a hard week, many new members recieve packages from friends and families with their new sorority letters on merchandise. For more information about New Member Packages, please visit our website. Please note that Colonial, Magnolia and Judy Bonner Drive will be closed to traffic on Sunday, August 14 from 11am-4pm.

RETREATS?

After Bid Day, sororities plan opportunities so that their new member class can bond and get to know each other. Here, the new members are able to meet their new sisters, learn about their sorority, and celebrate finding their home away from home for the next four years.

REST UP

Bid Day is a very exciting and long day. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep, as you will have the opportunity to meet the rest of your new member class & chapter leadership.

WHAT TO WEAR

Wear a loose fitting/cooling top, shorts, and comfortable shoes with backs. After you get your bid, you will have opportunity to go to your new home. There, you will receive a jersey with your new sorority letters to put over your tank top.

REMINDER!

Bid Day is crazy, hectic, and hot! Make sure you drink tons of water to stay hydrated! You are encouraged to bring a water bottle with you. Don’t worry, many chapters will serve snacks when you get to the house.

New Member

PACKAGES & ARRANGEMENTS In partnership with the Alabama Panhellenic Association, local vendors will be offering Sorority New Member Packages and Arrangements for Fall 2022 Primary Recruitment. New Member Packages are gift packages and/or flower arrangements congratulating a new member on joining a sorority. Local vendors will deliver New Member Packages to the sorority houses post- Bid Day before the new members return from their retreats. In coordination with local vendors, each sorority has designated a specific time and date for New Member Package and Arrangements deliveries. Individuals who wish to hand deliver sorority gift packages and/or flower arrangements to a new member on Bid Day will need to arrange on-site pick-up with the local vendor, as there will be no deliveries to sorority row on Sunday, August 14, 2022. For more information about Sorority New Member Packages and Arrangements, please contact one of the following approved local vendors:

BAMA BOUND Orientation Bama Bound, the University’s student orientation program that takes place during May, June, July, and August, is required of all new freshmen and transfer students. If you cannot attend any of the Bama Bound Orientation sessions prior to August, you will need to register for the Freshman Final Session on August 11th - 12th. Since this session overlaps with two days of recruitment, you will need to make note of this conflict on your recruitment registration form, when it asks if you “anticipate any conflicts that might prevent you from attending any of the recruitment activities.” At Convocation, you will also need to notify your Sigma Rho Chi of this conflict, so that we

can make it possible for you to attend any of the parties you will be missing. A student’s registration is not complete until she has attended a Bama Bound orientation session, created a class schedule, and paid/ arranged to. If you have not participated in Orientation before you come to campus for Primary Recruitment, we suggest that you start a Bama Cash account by going to actcard.ua.edu (or call 205348-2288 during business hours) or bring cash, a credit or debit card with you. You will need money for meals until you have paid your Fall bill in full or enrolled in a payment plan with Student Account Services.

PACKAGES

As a celebration of the end of a long and stressful week, some PNM’s will recieve a new member package from family and/or friends. Although chapters will provide their new members with a few gifts on bid day, these packages can be purchased ahead of time and delivered shortly after Bid Day to the new member’s new chapter and may be different than what the chapter gives. In partnership with the Alabama Panhellenic Association, local vendors will be offering Sorority New Member Packages and Arrangements for Fall 2022 Primary Recruitment. New Member Packages are gift packages and/or flower arrangements congratulating a new member on joining a sorority. Local vendors will deliver New Member Packages to the sorority houses post Bid Day in anticipation of the new members return from their new member retreats. In coordination with local vendors, each sorority has designated a specific time and date for New Member Package deliveries. Individuals who wish to hand-deliver sorority gift packages and/or flower arrangements to a new member on Bid Day will need to arrange an onsite pick-up with the local vendor, as there will be no deliveries to sorority row on Bid Day.
