WANDERLUST.
I am not by nature an adventurer. I cherish photos of my childhood trips to Disney, but some of my earliest memories are connected to children’s theatre, and how being on stage would take me to new and exciting places. As we prepared for the Wanderlust Issue, the desire for a new way of thinking was at the forefront of my mind – the need to journey within yourself, to follow your inner compass and to let love lead the way. After much time of prolonged postponements, the wedding industry did what it has always done: endured. We redefined weddings while also looking ahead to show you what’s next. Coming out of a time where we all need an escape, there is a renewed excitement for grand adventure. Weddings are back in full swing, and couples need to be inspired. I hope you find a treasure trove of inspiration in these pages, with expert insight on all things design, fashion, planning, and more. In times like these, it can be hard to find a sense of adventure, to feel like exploring is important. But it’s in these moments that seeking magic matters most. In our fashion story, “Up and Away,” we look at all the imaginative ways a bride can escape the everyday and daydream of fantasy and fashion. A sense of Wanderlust can also be explored during a dining experience that transports you with different flavors and aromas. That’s the aim of our “Taste the World” feature, which looks at global cuisine prepared by local chefs.
"You have no need to
travel anywhere. Journey within yourself. Enter a mine of rubies and bathe in the splendor of your own light.” - Rumi
As a wedding planner, I know that I am only as strong as the team I surround myself with. In that spirit, collaboration and culture are also at the heart of this issue. We invited a diverse array of local planners to lead a series in showcasing ceremonies and “table escapes”. They brought in dreamy decor from places all over Alabama to create a starting point of inspiration for your event. Every person who has been part of this issue is dedicated to excellence throughout times of uncertainty. That is why you invest in quality professionals. This issue celebrates the differences that bind us all together, as we get reinspired after a year that forced us to look at things in a new way. Consider this issue your guide to immersing yourself in imagination and redefining how you can plan your wedding. The old ways of doing things may not be relevant anymore, but love, adventure, culture and finding our place in the world is ever relevant. Go outside, lay down on a blanket, and look up. Wherever you are, you’ll see magic and possibility - which, after all, is what Wanderlust is made of.

PIN.TAP. LIKE. LOVE! Our paths in life are a curiouser and curiouser experience. When you think you know what lies around the corner, you may be surprised where your road really takes you. But I've learned that if you follow your North Star, the places you'll go will be exactly where you need to be. I dedicate my work in this issue to all my dear friends that have pulled me onto trains to faraway islands, let me crash on their couches while chasing my dreams, toasted me on flights soaring across oceans, and made every journey with me to who I am today. Thank you for always believing in me. Never lose your Wonder. Never forget to let yourself wander. Always remember places you can call home. David Kirk Art Director & Sr. Editor

BEAUTY ROUTINE Having a plan for your glam goals sets the path for success. Story by Claire Sullivan
When we look our best, we feel our best. But planning a wedding makes it tricky to really focus on achieving our goals. Don’t fret: With a few simple changes to your routines, you’ll be glowing down the aisle. Whether you’re aiming to tone up or just drop a few pounds, focus on tiny tweaks in your day-to-day. The most efficient way to get in shape is by moving your body every day. “Instead of working out hard three days a week, find something you love to do daily,” says Thomas Cox, owner of Meal Fit. “Change your lifestyle instead of jumping on a diet trend. And do something that’s easy and manageable for you.” For some, that may be opting for a salad instead of a sandwich at lunch, and for others, it could be replacing your nightly glass of wine with a quick walk around the block. To feel glam during dress fittings, showers, and beyond, start with self-tanner. “It gives you an instant boost,” says Yazmin Cavale, CEO and co-founder of Glow. For makeup, highlight your favorite features: Rock a bold lip or a subtle cat-eye. Keeping it true to your natural look is key. “I always recommend an enhanced look instead of a full transformation,” says Cavale. Working with your preferred beauty professional ahead of your big day will give them time to make the right recommendations as well as plan a trial run of your hair and makeup. By making time for yourself during the planning process, you’ll kick off your newlywed bliss as the most gorgeous version of you.

“I would always try to focus on the features that you love the most. So if you love your eyes, I would play up your eyes. If you love your lips, I would play up your lips. Always go for the enhanced look rather than the transformation look. That way, you can’t go wrong and people are always going to look at you and see you. Trying to alter that is where it can go wrong for a lot of people. Staying natural and true to yourself is always key.”
“There are two things to do on your wedding day. First, eat what you normally eat – oatmeal and OJ, eggs and smoothies. If you don’t eat breakfast, don’t eat it. Just because it’s your wedding day doesn’t mean you need to eat something different. Keep the flow of the normal day, and skip the multi-course breakfast and brunch. Eat normally. Second is exercise. Get up and exercise the day of your wedding. Unspent energy is hazardous to us. We gotta get up and move; having a sweat will give you more usable energy. You won’t be as tired. Think of it as gameday for the bride.”

BEAUTYGOALS How Lily and Sami Nizam joined together to manifest their Montgomery practice, Alabama Surgical Arts. Story by Claire Sullivan Photography by Frank Carnaggio
When Lily and Sami Nizam met, they were each off to the races in their respective fields. Sami was completing his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency in New Jersey, and Lily was working as a physician associate in general surgery in Long Island, New York. During his training, Sami saw nurse practitioner and physician assistant injectors working side by side with their surgeons and suggested it to Lily—but it took her another year until she decided it was worth a shot. “After spending time in that field, we decided that our ultimate goal would be to collaborate our skillsets and open a medical office together,” says Lily, who also reigns as 2021’s Mrs. Alabama. In August 2019, that dream became a reality. In a whirlwind two weeks, they both moved to Montgomery, said their “I do’s,”

A chemical peel is helpful for wrinkles, light acne scarring and irregular pigmentation such as freckles and age spots. Precancerous conditions such as keratoses (thick, rough, reddish growths) also respond well to this procedure.

WOMEN OF THE WAREHOUSE
Making sure every detail is perfect for an event takes a lot of effort, but the women behind the scenes of B&A Warehouse know how to get the job done with great style and great aplomb. Story by Alice Doyle / Photography by Maggie Rae
50
Birmingham institution B&A Warehouse is consistently a first choice for events from weddings to fundraisers. If you ask around town, you’ll discover that almost everyone has been to the historic venue at some point. Its innate appeal springs from the building itself; once a plumbing and mill supply company dating
back to the early 1900s, the original detailing (exposed brick and wooden columns) was kept intact during its renovation, but beautifully restored and enhanced. B&A is also celebrated for its excellent onsite and off-site catering services and diverse spaces within—areas for more intimate gatherings and large-scale wedding
receptions. While the goal is a seamless presentation, it takes a dedicated and talented team to pull it off time and time again. Alabama Weddings talks to the women who make it happen: Managing Partner Susan Mason, Sales & Marketing Manager Haley Roebuck, and Executive Chef Deborah Thomas.
Q: What do you think makes the Warehouse a consistent favorite among event givers?
couple had collected all types of cocktail napkins in their signature colors. We always ask the couple about special recipes from their mother or grandmother that they want to serve to honor the family nature of weddings. One groom had proposed in Paris, so we had a crepe station. These type of elements say, ‘This is my wedding, not just any wedding,’ and allow the couple to take ownership in their wedding.” - Susan Mason
Q: For wedding receptions, what are tried-and-true crowd pleasers?
A: “We offer everything for an event except the flowers, wedding cake and music, as those are such personal decisions – so many linens, glassware options, and over 4,000 menu choices. People know they will get their money’s worth plus the quality of the food is excellent. Our food is full of flavor and is stylishly displayed. And it’s abundant, so you will never be stopping by a drive-through on the way home!” - Susan Mason Q: What’s something you’ve learned working on wedding receptions? A: “We always make sure the bride and groom eat before they enter the reception. There is nothing more unattractive than a bride that’s had too much to drink. Often brides especially are nervous on the day, and they simply don’t eat enough. I had one almost faint and it was scary, so I never made that mistake again! We also send this nice B&A tote bag filled with some of the wedding food, cake and champagne to have at the hotel, and the newlyweds are always so grateful.” - Susan Mason Q: What do you encourage every bride to consider? A: “The best events have personal, special touches that really make a statement. For example, one bride had a collection of milk glass that we used during the reception; another

Q: Can you share a challenge in a particular event and how you troubleshot? A: “The day of a wedding, the band that was coming from Atlanta called and said they had broken down and were not going to be able to make it. Their story was fishy but I just had to improvise, and eventually the band manager found a replacement. Before the reception, the bride asked if everything was in order. I smiled and said yes! After the first dance, she came up to me and said, “That is not my band. Remind me never to play poker with you!” - Haley Roebuck Q: You work every weekend! You must love your job. A: “No matter the long hours and weekends, it’s all worth it when the bride comes up beaming and ecstatically announces: ‘This is the best day ever. It’s everything I could have ever imagined and more!’ That is so rewarding!” - Haley Roebuck
A: “My garlic chicken is a favorite as well as the pork and beef tenderloin dishes, always mac & cheese, and my special green beans. People love our different stations. We do a grits station, a fried rice station, and a fajita setup— all these are very popular.” - Deborah Thomas Q: The Warehouse is known for your fine cooking. What makes it so appealing? A: “Well, in addition to tasting good, I also make sure the food looks as good, paying special attention to the way it is served and displayed. For example, grits are often a taste-specific dish and people either like them or they don’t. When they see and taste my grits, they fall in love – mine take three hours to cook!” - Deborah Thomas Q: What do you cook for yourself and family? A: “Even though Sunday is my day off, I still cook Sunday dinner for my children and grandchildren. They stop by every Sunday and take a plate home with them for everyone in the family. Often it’s fried chicken, or when we have a fried seafood night, everyone comes, including my nieces and nephews!” - Deborah Thomas For more information about B&A Warehouse, visit bawarehouse.com.

LIFE BY THE BELL From your first home to your last, having a rock-star team of real-estate agents is your best asset.
Getting married typically involves serious financial and logistical decisions—the greatest of which involves buying the right home for your family. As newlyweds, you want to ensure that your decision to buy and own a new home doesn’t negatively impact your long-term financial goals. Mary Bell, owner of Sold by the Bell, and her outstanding team of real-
estate professionals are ready to help you with this critical decision.
Q: When and how do you suggest couples start considering their first home purchase together, especially with consideration to their timeline of planning their wedding?
their needs and desires in their first home. Some couples will be ready to purchase right away, possibly prior to the wedding; some may want to rent for a year before purchasing; and some may want to purchase right after the wedding and want to have everything in place ahead of time. No matter what their desires, the Sold by the Bell agents will be there to help them along the way and help put their plan into play.” - Jordan Hosey
Whether you are buying your first place as a couple, upsizing for a house where you will raise kids, or finding a home where you can grow old together, working with the right team will help you at every stage in life.
- QA -
A: “Each couple will have different circumstances and needs depending on the stage of life they are in. We recommend they start discussing their first home purchase prior to marriage to help understand each other’s vision. Each couple will have their own tailor-made plan when it comes to purchasing their home. Home purchase is a must-have conversation couples need to have, and will be different based on their lifestyle choices and how close they want to be to their support system, especially if considering having kids. This will also need to be a conversation they have with their agent to discuss

HOME & FAMILY
Q: What are the first materials/ documents couples should compile before looking at a home to purchase? A: “Discussing financial situations ahead of time is crucial for couples purchasing their first home, and even prior to getting married. Couples should know each others’ financial situation ahead of time, even down
to knowing credit scores—especially before making a financial decision together as big as buying a house, since finances can be one of the largest reasons for marital issues.” - Sheree Cobia Q: What is your top advice to help first-time home buyers through the process? A 1: “First and foremost, listen to your agent. First-time home buyers typically don’t realize what all goes into the process, and stress over what all it entails. Trust your agent to walk you through it and guide you in the right direction. Couples can rest easier knowing that Sold by the Bell has put much time and resources into making sure the process is as smooth and stress-free as possible.” - Mary Bell
A 2: “There are an overwhelming amount of steps that go into the buying process, and we have put together guides that will walk them through the process so they know what to expect. And Sold by the Bell handles about 90-95% of everything for them!” - Jordan Hosey
make those changes when the time comes. This will help in making sure they are ready financially to move up in house when the time comes.” - Brandon Cobia
Q: After a couple has bought their first home, what are the next steps to prepare for their next home as their family continues to grow?

WHEELS UP!
How a childhood hobby became a life’s work became a dream fully realized. Story by James Coats / Photography by Maggie Rae
I’ve always been interested in history and in vehicles, from a young age. As a young boy, when an airplane would fly over or a train would go past, I would immediately take notice. I spent many an afternoon playing on the tractors at the golf course where we lived, and I learned to drive in a three-wheeled Harley-Davidson golf cart. At age 6, I took my first airplane ride in a shiny silver Navion, and was immediately hooked by the view from above. At 15, I began hanging around our tiny airport in Marion, NC, where family friend Gene Padgett restored old cars and old airplanes. That summer, I did odd jobs for Gene in exchange for flying lessons, and made my first solo flight on my 16th birthday. Just a couple months later, I purchased my first car – a red 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury, which is still in our collection today. Coats Classic Cars was born in the afternoons after school, where I bought and sold cars alongside my good friend, car dealer Scott Huskins. Twenty two years later, things came full circle when Scott became one of our chauffeurs! It doesn’t take long owning or having access to antique cars before you get asked to bring one out for a wedding. I chauffeured the first on my 18th birthday, in a borrowed 1930 Ford Model A. Immediately after high

school, Coats Classic Cars became a classic car service shop in downtown Birmingham, [in what is] now the location of Regions Field. I continued my studies (history, naturally) at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, while chauffeuring weddings as a sideline. As so often happens with entrepreneurs, one day we looked up and this hobby had become a business. I had a decision to make! Family has always been a big part of our business, so in May 2005, with the help and advice of my father, I purchased one of Gene’s cars, our 1929 Hudson “Eleanor”, to begin building CCC into what it is today. In those days, in addition to our own cars, we partnered with other local collectors to add to our selection. We bought and restored our white 1959 Jaguar “Caroline” in 2008; today, she is our most requested car. In 2012, I again went to the counsel of family (this time, my mother and stepfather) and purchased our first Rolls-Royce, 1951 Silver Wraith “Catherine”. This opened the floodgates of car collecting and expansion. Today we offer over thirty classic cars, including eleven Rolls-Royces, across the Southeast and Midwest, from collections in Birmingham and Huntsville; Jackson, MS; Kansas City; and the Western Carolinas. We have several more
under restoration, which we perform right here in-house. My father fills in as a chauffeur for us still today, and my mother, a businesswoman herself, is always available to lend advice or a helping hand. My “better half” Kirsten expertly heads up our reservations office. Even my 16-year-old daughter has gotten involved, with her ‘own’ Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow “Abigail”! In August 2019, I had the opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream and purchased a 1947 North American Navion – an identical make and model to that shiny silver airplane which made an unforgettable impression at age 6, and in which I learned to fly at 15. In doing so, we founded Coats Classic Wings, which provides classic aircraft for productions and photo shoots. Our particular Navion has a very interesting past, having been owned in the 1950s by national media sensation “The Flying Grandmother” Zaddie Bunker of Palm Springs, flown for many years as a transcontinental racer, and made an appearance in the film It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. As with our classic cars, our Navion fulfills my passion of using the history of yesterday to make unforgettable memories for today. See you on the open road – or in the skies!

BUILT ON THE BLUFF Historic elements meet modern style on Burns Bluff at High Falls. Story by David Kirk
Karen Tillery and her husband, Glenn, had a vision for Burns Bluff at High Falls for many years. In December of 2017, their prayers were answered when the land they would need to build this dream became available.
“Burns Bluff was not created to be your average wedding venue that you rent for just a few hours on the day of your wedding,” says Tillery. “We have built Burns Bluff to be a destination location for a wedding, a place to make your wedding weekend an experience for everyone to enjoy. From the moment our couples arrive, we want them to feel like our lodge and cabins are their home for the weekend.” From the graciously appointed lodge, where the entire wedding party can stay comfortably, to the Charn, styled as a half-church and half-barn, Burns Bluff has all the space you will need to host your wedding weekend. “Celebrate the big day with a beautiful ceremony in one of our three ceremony sites, including the outdoor lodge lawn with bluff-edge arbor and

antique church pews,” says Tillery. “We’ve also recently opened our Bluff’s Edge Pavilion where you can walk through a pair of antique church doors, set in a wall made of 1800s hand-hewn logs, into the pavilion with a soaring reclaimed-wood ceiling against massive steel trusses sitting atop antique factory beams. All of this reclaimed awesomeness is perched over the edge of the bluff with breathtaking views down the gorge.” Tillery and her husband have poured their hearts into this venture together, and it shows at every turn. “Building Burns Bluff has been such a huge part of my life for the last three years,” says Tillery. “I feel like so much of myself is here. I am very passionate about what I do in regards to preserving and rebuilding history. I love that I have been able to combine that passion for history and create an amazing place for couples to get married. They may not all have the infatuation with the historic side of things that I do, but the fact that so many people see the beauty in these reclaimed pieces of history brings me so much joy!”
Adhami Photography
Karen, owner of Restoration Log Cabins, combines her passion for history and construction with illustration and design skills by renovating and restoring 1800s-era log cabins and barns. Being a licensed home builder gives her the knowledge of construction needed to help marry together historic elements with modern construction. Tapping into all these skills, Karen and Glenn set out to create a destination where couples could start their lives together surrounded by family, history and sweeping views of this beautiful area.

A LOVELY BLUEPRINT At Windmill Station, a historic structure brings modern celebrations to life. Story by Claire Sullivan
The venue you choose for your wedding weekend will forever be a special place for you: It’s where you’ll embark on your new life together as a married couple. And Windmill Station, a storied property in Dothan, brings more than a beautiful backdrop. At nearly a century old, Windmill Station has seen a bevy of tenants. It was originally a facility for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and over the years it’s evolved from a biker’s club to a wrestling center to a flea market. And the property had the wear and tear (water-soaked floors, leaky roofs) to prove it when father-daughter duo Eddie and Jennifer Donaldson purchased it in 2013. They set out with restoration – not total renovation – in mind. Eddie has a background in construction, so conserving the property was a no-brainer. And he’s been able to restore 90 percent of it, carefully salvaging wood and repurposing it wherever possible while keeping the authenticity of the space. “It was a 46,000-square-foot building with an open floor plan,” Jennifer explains. “The possibilities were endless, but the building chose its own destiny.” Now, Windmill Station houses two separate wedding venues, with each one letting the structure’s original features shine. And they’re both oneof-a-kind and rich in history. The Boiler Room debuted first, in 2016. “It features unique wooden walls and mixed metals, giving the space an industrial backdrop,” says
64
WEDDING PLANNING
Jennifer. (It’s also aptly named, as it’s located adjacent to the 1930s boiler room.) The Donaldsons expected the space (which holds up to 200 guests) to sufficiently meet Dothan’s needs, but they quickly realized the community needed a bigger option, and Windmill Station had the bones to accommodate. In 2018, they began hosting weddings in the Roosevelt, a bright and airy locale with lofty ceilings and original wood walls and beams. The name nods to the venue’s history and its new owners: Franklin D. Roosevelt was president when the building was created, and New York City’s Roosevelt Hotel is one of Jennifer’s favorites from her decade living in Manhattan. Beyond helping couples bring their dream days to life, the Donaldsons also make a point to foster community in Dothan. Jennifer started an upcycling passion project called ReBloom in 2020. To prevent gorgeous blooms from going in the dumpster, the nonprofit repurposes floral arrangements from events and gifts them to local schools, hospices, nursing homes and more in the Dothan community. “We feel honored to play a small part in the weddings here,” says Jennifer. “When you first sit down with a couple, most of them have some idea of what they would like for their wedding and it’s just a great feeling seeing their visions come to life.”

“The place that inspired me for these designs is the Western United States! I am a huge nature-lover, and I have felt deeply inspired by the extraordinary scenery that I have experienced in several National Parks. The West has so many different types of scenery, from huge mountains and cliffs to beautiful wooded areas to expansive grassy plains to breath-taking desert scenes. I love it all, and wanted the cakes to replicate the rawness and authenticity of these natural scenes."

There’s just something about the tranquility of waves as far as the eye can see that never fails to relax and center me. With that in mind, these designs were inspired by the hues, curls, and ripples of the sea.”

- Advice from the Bride -
“Most will say to not worry about the small details and enjoy the moment; but, I would say to focus on the small details that mean the most to you and your fiancé, so you can remember those together forever. I spent a lot of time on invitations, using a painting my mother did for the envelope liner, as well as the music for the ceremony because Brian and I both love music.” - Suzanna

- Advice from the Bride -
“I wanted a wedding filled with the colors that I like every day instead of a traditional wedding color palette. I had only one floral picture for my inspiration. The talented Meghan and Jill built an amazing vision around that one picture. Engaged couples should not be hesitant to explore outside of the traditional wedding box to create something that represents them individually.” - Alex

- The Proposal “In March of 2019, Michael and I went on a ski trip to Utah with a group of friends. Michael and my future sister-in-law went to the mountain early to ‘hit the black runs’ and told us to meet them at the top of the mountain for brunch. When we arrived, Michael led me onto a balcony on the edge of the mountain. There I saw a pathway lined with candles, lanterns, roses, and a table decorated with some of our favorite memories. Most of his speech was a blur, but I’ll always remember he ended it with, ‘You’re my lobster,’ which is a nod to my favorite TV show, Friends.” - Kathryn

“Don’t lose sight of what a wedding is truly about. It is easy to get caught up in the small stressors of wedding planning, but try to enjoy this season of life. You are about to marry your best friend and the love of your life. So don’t listen to your Aunt Karen when she tells you that the napkins aren’t the right shade of green. - How They Met “After I completed grad school in 2015, I moved to Texas to start my new job. My first night in Dallas, I went out with my best girlfriend from college, Morgan, and ended up meeting Zane for the first time. They already knew each other and were good friends. The next day, Zane invited us to his lake house for the following weekend. After the lake trip, we continued to go on dates and have so much fun together. I knew he was the one when he drove nine hours in the pouring rain to come to his first Alabama football game and meet my family.” - Sarah Frances

- How They Met -
“Rachel moved to Charlotte, NC, for her first job after graduating from Auburn University in 2018. This was a very bold move considering she didn’t know anyone in North Carolina. Lucky for me, I met her within a couple of weeks of her moving to Charlotte. Our first date was on a Sunday afternoon in August at one of Charlotte’s local spots, Seoul Food. We sat outside on the porch talking and getting to know one another. By the end of our date, I knew I had to convince her to go out with me again. In the weeks following our first date, we went out several more times. It didn’t take long (three weeks to be exact) for me to ask Rachel to be my girlfriend – to which she replied, ‘We’ll see.’ But I knew I had her hooked.” - CT

“An intimate wedding of fifty guests meant we could focus on spending time with our closest family and friends. A heavy Anglican service, rich with music, was planned. I had a ring given to my mother by my late father restyled into a lapel pin by Elizabeth Adams Jewelers. Addison carried a timepiece belonging to his great grandfather. The flower girl and ring bearer announced our arrival with the ringing of glass bells that could be heard over the symphony of music. As we entered the church to the music of ‘I Was Glad,’ the joy and theme of the day was set.” - Matthew

“Take the time to be intentional in your planning – your wedding party, your vendor team, the creatives in your circle. We wanted our day to be filled with our values: love, patience, creativity, and most of all abundance. “If we walk far enough," says Dorothy, "we shall sometime come to someplace.” - L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
My hope is that this issue inspired a spark of adventure within you. But remember, wanderlust doesn't always lead you on a journey to a faraway place. The road we walk to find a home within ourselves is the most important journey of our lives. Home isn't a place, it's a feeling. Home is also in the time we spend together, gathered around the table sharing tales of days past and dreams of days to come. May you always find enchanting inspiration and the comfort of home within our pages. We will see you on our next adventure, AW 2023 - Storytellers. x, Christopher
