What we're looking forward to...
Always B Miki
4 | Alabar
The first Australia/New Zealand foals for Always B Miki Always B Miki served tremendous books in his first seasons at stud in North America and Australia and New Zealand. He is no ordinary horse. There is nothing ordinary about him at all. He’s the fastest horse that ever lived. He’s a stunning looking horse that stands 16.3’.
The first He’s Watching’s hitting the racetrack in 2018/19
Possibly more than any horse we’ve stood, we’re really looking forward to seeing his foals. Adam Bowden from Diamond Creek (where Miki stands in North America) reports his foals are tall but not heavy boned and once they’re a few days old and running around the paddock they have a real athleticism about them. We can’t wait! Breeders should also note that Miki serves a full book in North America at a fee of US$12,500. His $7,000 fee in the Southern Hemisphere (incl GST in Aust and plus GST in NZ) is ridiculously good value.
He’s Watching went straight from training as a four-year-old into quarantine to come to New Zealand to commence his stud career. Therefore, his first progeny to race anywhere in the world will be from his first crop sired in New Zealand. This crop, which will be two-year-olds in the new season, total 137 live foals (78 in New Zealand and 59 in Australia) – and gee the reports on them are great. The trainers are telling us their He’s Watchings are natural pacers with a clean gait and a willingness to run. He’s Watching himself was a superstar two-year-old – going undefeated in eight starts, setting two world records and being voted US Two-Year-Old of the Year. We’re really excited to see his first two-year-olds worldwide debut on the racetracks of New Zealand and Australia.
Positive news for breeders... The increased stake money at Alexandra Park
NZ Bloodstock holding their first Standardbred sales in 2019
From March 2019, Alexandra Park are increasing the stake money paid out for each race night by $40,000. This will mean the average stakemoney (non-group race) at Alexandra Park will be $20,000 per race.
For many years PGG Wrightson have run the New Zealand Yearling Sales very professionally and efficiently.
Once these increases are in place it will mean the stakes at Alexandra Park will have almost doubled from what they were five years ago. Wonderful news. We as breeders just need to make sure there are enough horses to fill their fields. Importantly, as these stake increases are backed by the prudent commercial developments the Auckland Trotting Club have undertaken, the industry can have confidence the increases are not only sustainable but, quite possibly, just a starting point.
However, the arrival of NZ Bloodstock into the Standardbred sales market is extremely positive news for New Zealand breeders. What they can bring to the table with their proven ability to market the sales and lift its international profile - and also encourage and assist purchasers into horses, will most surely make a measurable difference. We, like many industry participants we have spoken to, are confident NZ Bloodstock can grow the Standardbred sales in New Zealand. This growth can only be great news for New Zealand breeders.

What we're looking forward to... (cont)
Sunshine Beach has been the most popular sire in North America in the last couple of seasons. This wonderful support is a result of how wowed breeders have been by his foals. We can also attest to what cracking foals he leaves. They are of good size and are strong, correct and have a real presence about them. Sunshine Beach’s first foals are a crop of 101 Ontario sired two-yearolds. With baby racing just getting underway in North America, the Sunshine Beach’s have been out in force in the qualifiers. We’ll be following their progress with great interest. Sunshine Beach’s first Southern Hemisphere foals will be racing as two-year-olds in the new season. He has 44 live foals in both New Zealand and Australia.
The first Sunshine Beaches racing in North America in 2018 and in Australia/New Zealand in 2018/19
Sunshine Beach served a much bigger book last season (he now stands at Alabar Australia) off the back of great reports on his first foals. Lack of initial numbers will be a bit of a challenge for him but the reports indicate there is plenty for us to get excited about.
The continuing coming of age of the Auckland Reactors
The Vicbred Advantage • A $7,000 win bonus for a horse’s first win in Victoria as a 2yo, 3yo or 4yo. • 2yo, 3yo and 4yo finals all being Group One races with prizemoney of $125,000 for pacers and $90,000 for trotters. 5% of all prizemoney is paid to the breeder. • Breeders cash bonus equal to 10% of the advertised stakemoney for any 2yo, 3yo or 4yo age-restricted race win in Victoria. For a foal to be eligible for the Vicbred Program, it only needs to be by a stallion that stood in Victoria in the season the mare was inseminated. The Alabar sires standing in Victoria are: Always B Miki, Art Major, Betterthancheddar, Grinfromeartoear, Rock N Roll Heaven, Roll With Joe, Shadow Play, Sunshine Beach and Vincent.

While Auckland Reactor has already left 19 individual two-year-old winners to date (including a Gr1 winner at that age) many of his progeny are much like he was himself – lean as youngsters and getting stronger as they mature. He’s already sired a horse very much in his own image in terms of both type and ability in the multiple Gr1 winner Chase Auckland (1:52.2, 9 starts, 8 wins, $392,329). He’s also sired the very good multiple Gr1 placed filly Soho Burning Love (1:52.6, $111,570, 3rd Vic Oaks, 2nd NSW Oaks). Her record is excellent but even better when you consider her Gr1 placings were behind the brilliant Shez All Rock. All told Auckland Reactor now has over 130 progeny either
qualified or raced with more than 40 winners including three in sub-1:55 and 28 in sub-2:00. His total progeny earnings are well over $1 million. So many trainers tell us they have an Auckland Reactor that they really like and think it will get much better as it improves like Tony Herlihy with Revolver (unbeaten in 2 starts to date), Michael House with Jazzy Star (1:55.8, unbeaten in 2 starts to date), Maurice McKendry with Red Reactor, Murray Brown with Please Shuddup etc. We’re really looking forward to following the Auckland Reactors as they continue to mature.

Arden Lodge A nursery producing premier racehorses John and Judy Stiven have elevated Arden Lodge in Tapanui, West Otago to being one of New Zealand’s leading breeding nurseries and producers of premium stock. The name Arden has spread around Australasia with an ever-expanding list of high class winners and breeding awards. Each year John and Judy present outstanding drafts of Arden Lodge yearlings at the sales, which are highly sought after by buyers from Australia and New Zealand and this trend is expected to continue in the years ahead judging by the fine band of broodmares and richly bred yearlings they have accumulated.
How did the Arden Lodge breeding operation first begin and what background do you both have with horses? My father and mother, the late Doug and Noreen Stiven, bred and raced horses for many years, and it was in 1969 they bred their first horse and took their first yearling to the Christchurch Yearling Sales. They registered the name ‘Arden’ with the New Zealand Racing Conference in 1974. From an early age I was involved with the small team my father trained. I then went through the Southland Harness Cadet Scheme, held a Trials Licence, and was the race commentator at the Gore workouts. I have always been interested in pedigrees and yearling preparation and while my wife Judy has had no

background with horses, she now really enjoys working with the foals. Judy is also involved in the all-important administration side of the business and is key to communicating with the racing syndicates we have formed. She keeps everyone well informed with newsletters via the Arden News and Facebook. Why did you and Judy decide to turn the Arden Lodge breeding operation from a hobby into a commercial business? We have always considered it as a commercial business but recently we have stepped it up a bit more in terms of numbers and quality. What has helped is having had nice racing fillies bred at Arden Lodge that are now in
our broodmare band, such as Arden’s Darlin (2007-08 2YO Pacing Filly of Year), Southwind Arden, (Winter Cup & Northern Breeders Stakes), Rocknroll Arden (Northern Oaks & NZ Sires Stakes 3YO Final) and Arden’s Choice, (1.55.1; NZ Oaks & Northern Oaks.) What were some of the first broodmares and offspring that helped Arden Lodge initially make an impact at the sales? Winter Rose has been a fantastic mare that we first had and she was a huge step forward for us. Her winning the NZ Broodmare Excellence Award was very special. We were also fortunate in breeding the New Zealand Cup winner Arden Rooney, from Tosca Hanover,
which was another a huge feather in our cap. What are the challenges you face as a commercial standardbred breeder and seller? It is always difficult to predict what stallions will be fashionable sellers at sales that are effectively three years away from the time we are deciding which stallions to use. There also is the uncertainty of not knowing what your return will be at the time you are deciding how much to invest in the following year’s service fees. Then there is the inequality of prices selling colts compared to fillies. When you breed a high percentage of fillies there is a negative financial impact you have to absorb.

ARDEN LODGE MARES BOOKED TO ALABAR STALLIONS: Always B Miki Arden’s Rose Art Major Tricky Woman Real Wings Southwind Arden Winter Rose Vincent Arden’s Rockstar Young Tegan
How do you decide on stallion choices for your mares each season? We follow what is happening in the USA to see what crosses work well. We like to try new stallions but also realise many New Zealand buyers are reluctant to try stallions unproven in New Zealand. Generally, we go to proven stallions but also like to show some flair. For example, we bred Winter Rose to Panspacificflight and got Arden’s Choice! You have recently purchased a lifetime breeding share in Alabar’s exciting new stallion Vincent. What is it about Vincent that makes you optimistic about his future as a sire? Vincent was very impressive as a racehorse and has a pedigree that suits a lot of our mares and he has a groupwinning dam’s line. Vincent was held in high regard at All Stars and it would be great to see him get strong New Zealand support. What have been other Alabar sires you have supported over the years? We have used Art Major and Rock N Roll Heaven. We have two colts for this year’s yearling sales by Art Major that we really like and last year we had an Art Major from Rocknroll Arden that was the second highest priced colt at the sale. Are there any other new Alabar sires you think have a promising future
10 | Alabar
and why? Always B Miki - the world’s fastest horse in 1:46! He has to be a chance. Other sires are A Rocknroll Dance which has a great pedigree. He also performed on the track and his first crop are doing really well in the States. And there is He’s Watching which was a high-speed juvenile and his Meadowlands Pace win was just awesome. Your broodmare band is now one of the strongest in the country and last season you added the outstanding race mare Venus Serena to your line up. What attracted you to Venus Serena and what is planned for her Art Major colt? Venus Serena has an outstanding race record and we watched her many times when she raced Rocknroll Arden. Her strength and determination to win make her stand out as a top class mare. Her Art Major colt is destined for next year’s yearling sale at this stage. What other mares have you either retired from racing or recently added to your broodmare band? A: Arden’s Choice retired after last year’s Harness Jewels but unfortunately didn’t get in foal so we are hoping she does this year. We purchased Tricky Woman, which is a half-sister to Scuse Me. She has an Art Major colt for the sales. We have also bought Arden’s Rockstar, a
Rocknroll Hanover - Arden’s Darlin mare. She is a three-quarter sister to Celestial Arden which has been doing well in Australia. She is likely to go to Vincent. John, you have been very active as an administrator, including being President of the Southland Breeders Association and one of the main instigators in setting up the Southern Bred Southern Reared concept for horses bred south of the Waitaki River. How have these roles panned out for you and what have been the highlights? The highlight is working with likeminded breeders for the betterment of our industry. There are a few of us who are second generation on the committee of the breeders so there is a lot of experience and knowledge. It is a pleasure to be involved in two such groups. SBSR has been a big help to us all in lifting our profile and increasing sales of yearlings. It has been for the greater good in the
area with the new Southern Harness structure and shows how working together achieves positive results. You and Judy have earned a great reputation in the industry with the way you turn out your yearlings for the sales. What has been the secret to your preparations and success? The yearlings are from good mares and stallions so that, combined with being raised on West Otago soil, helps. Our horses are hardy and well fed. We source lucerne from Central Otago and our oats are locally grown. Fifty years of experience could be the secret! Do you have any words of advice to anyone wanting to start breeding commercially for the yearling sales in the hope they can make a profit?
3
Get a nice mare and use the best stallion you can that suits that mare. Give it a go and then be patient. Join the New Zealand Breeders Association and don’t be afraid to talk to other breeders. What would you like to see happening to the New Zealand standardbred breeding and racing industry in 10 years’ time? Our racehorse exports are currently performing very well and we need to keep that momentum going so that we have a wider market. We need to retain the people already involved and attract new people, perhaps by sharing those ‘feel good’ stories that express the belief that a winner can come from anywhere, and the sharing of images of the enjoyment people get when they experience success. Even the Queen rises to her feet with a smile when her horses win at Royal Ascot! We are currently managing three syndicates and there are lots of positive benefits from these collective groups.

AN EXCITING FIRST CROP Always B Miki retired to stud with much fanfare and the response to him in both hemispheres has been fantastic. Miki is a horse with an amazing presence - he is tall, athletic and has the look of a really special horse. While we eagerly await his first crop which will arrive in a few months, we are pleased to see his North American foals which look to have similar traits to their dad.

AN INTERVIEW WITH
JEAN FEISS Jean and Bill Feiss have been two of the most successful owners in recent times winning races all across Australia and New Zealand with horses they selected as yearlings. Race Images
Jean Feiss and grand daughter Emily
One such horse was the brilliant Vincent who will this year start his stud career at Alabar in conjunction with Nevele R Stud.
How did you and Bill become involved in harness racing? It goes back many years when I first started working horses at the showgrounds, early mornings prior to my day job, and the passion for both of us grew from there. You used to train your own horses, but in recent years you have sent your purchases to Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen to train. How did this partnership come
about, and do you miss training at all? Firstly I don’t miss the hard yards, I am happy to leave that to the younger ones now, I am finding I am getting as much pleasure as an owner just watching the horses compete. When campaigning in Australia Mark stayed with us at our stables, and when I decided I no longer wanted to train it was an easy decision to transfer my horses to Mark as I had seen his ability and professional standards first hand.

Vincent
You and Bill have purchased many good yearlings in the past few years. What have been your best and favourite horses? If I had to mention one filly and one colt I would have to say Spanish Armada and Vincent, what a dream team to own. Without giving away all your secrets, what do you look for in a yearling? It is not just one thing, a combination of breeding and the yearling itself on sale day. Vincent has a lot of things going for him but what grabbed your attention when looking at Vincent? What was not to like about him on sale day, he was well grown, had a great stride, his laid back manner, he was the total package on the day. What were the early impressions of Vincent in training? He always showed he was going to win races and then when he got to the trials
Vincent

and he first raced he showed he could be something special. What was your favourite of Vincent’s performances? The NZ Derby and the Breeders Challenge at Menangle and the Auckland Cup. I think he showed he had a lot more to deliver. Unfortunately that was to be his last race. What traits do you believe will make Vincent a successful sire? Obviously his breeding, but I think his temperament, gait and willingness to win should carry over to his offspring. You are obviously a buyer at the yearling sales so will you be looking to purchase any of the progeny of Vincent when they hit the sale rings? For sure, we will be inspecting every yearling at the sales in NZ and Australia by Vincent and will be purchasing some of his progeny.
What makes harness racing most enjoyable for you? I have always loved harness racing, horses have been a lifelong passion of mine.
“
For sure, we will be inspecting every yearling at the sales in NZ and Australia by Vincent and will be purchasing some of his progeny.

BY GEORGE SHE MIGHT BE THE GREATEST
She might be known to all of us now as Shez All Rock but she will be remembered in the history of harness racing in the Southern Hemisphere as Shez All Class. This attractive filly, sired by Rock N Roll Heaven, has now racked up ten breathtaking victories from her eleven starts (as at 10th June 2018) and taken her earnings to almost $450,000. During the 98 days between 24th February and 2nd June, Shez All Rock crushed her opposition in capturing the NSW Oaks, Victorian Oaks, NZ Oaks and the NZ Diamond on Jewels Day. Has there been a more impressive three year old filly in the past thirty or so years? Tailamade Lombo won the Victorian, Queensland and WA Oaks in 1998 to perhaps rival the record of Shez All Rock and if we venture back to 1970 the great Kiwi filly Bonnie Frost won the New Zealand, NSW, Victorian and NZ North Island Oaks to establish herself as a champion filly nearly 50 years ago. These facts elevate Shez All Rock into rarefied air. The story of this remarkable filly may only be in its early chapters as with her current owner being one of the leading trainers in
16 | Alabar
Brad Reid (NZSBA) and George Tennent
North America in Chris Ryder (an ex Kiwi) the world is her oyster. Shez All Rock is by Rock N Roll Heaven and is the first foal from an unraced Mach Three mare called Just Irish Loch. She was bred by Whittlesea, Victoria, couple George and Mary Tennent who have been breeding standardbreds for the past 40 plus years. She was sold as Lot 8 at the 2016 Melbourne APG Yearling Sale to young Victorian trainer Mark Pitt for a bargain price of $11,500.
Leah Crane, who prepared her for that sale said recently “She was a well grown filly with a very good work ethic . So where does this seemingly unlimited race ability come from? Certainly her sire Rock N Roll Heaven has now established himself in the Southern Hemisphere as a serious player in the stallion ranks. The first four dams of Shez All Rock are by Mach Three, Falcon Seelster, Lordship and Lumber Dream so certainly no weak links in the chain and surprisingly very little Meadow Skipper blood as well.
The granddam of Shez All Rock is Lady Loch and she has produced two handy winners from seven foals. She in turn is a half sister to five winners with two of those winning in excess of $100,000 each - Smooth Loch and Magic Loch. The fourth dam Heatherloch was awarded the 1988 NZ Broodmare of the Year title so, although the purists wouldn’t consider the family to be the strongest in the NZ Stud Book, it is a solid family without any weak links. We caught up with the breeder of Shez All Rock, George Tennent, recently to find out his secret in breeding such a dominant filly. How long have you been breeding standardbreds and how did you make a start? Mary and myself bought our first horse
in the early to mid 1970’s. She was a mare called Our Beverly who was by Scottish Star. She won one race for us and that was enough to get us hooked. We then bred twelve foals from her over a sixteen year timespan, with a colt called Silas Mariner being the best of them. He won fourteen races including a QLD Sires Stakes Final. One of her daughters called Jazzy Ruler was then a very good broodmare for us, producing seven winners, and is also the granddam of White Eye Markei who won in excess of $172,000. Another talented horse we bred was Charleys Dream. He was the ninth foal of a mare we purchased in NZ called Party Guest. He won 26 races and almost $190,000.
How and where did you purchase Just Irish Loch, the dam of Shez All Rock? It is a day I will never forget, the 22nd February 2011, the day of the Christchurch earthquake. I was at the yearling sale waiting for Lot 260 to come into the ring when the earth shook. Anyway despite the frightening experience of the earthquake I had enough courage to wait a couple more hours for Lot 260, a filly called Irish Loch. She was by Mach Three from a Falcon Seelster mare and I had been told before the sale that she was a nicely conformed filly. So I bought her and then shipped her back to Australia straight after the Sale and then had to rename her Just Irish Loch. She had some issues after being broken in so I then bred her in 2013 to Rock N Roll Heaven…. to produce a champion filly. What has Just Irish Loch produced since Shez All Rock? Well we haven’t had a lot of luck with her since 2014. We skipped a year after her first filly and then she had a colt by A Rocknroll Dance in 2016. However he had some problems and had to be euthanized. Then she slipped a foal in 2017 by Pet Rock and is now back in foal to that stallion and is due to foal in mid November.

We will book her back into Rock N Roll Heaven for this coming breeding season.

two victories in New Zealand will be lasting memories. It was a great thrill to be associated with the first Australian bred filly to win a NZ Oaks and a Jewels Final. The hospitality we received from the Kiwis was five star and I must give particular thanks to John Mooney and Brad Reid from Harness Breeders NZ.
Shez All Rock as a yearling
I do get a lot of advice on my breeding choices from Robert A’Court in Adelaide and it was on his recommendation that we bred Shez All Rock. The first three foals from Just Irish Loch will all be by sons of Rocknroll Hanover. Was there any particular reason for this? As mentioned earlier, Robert A’Court did suggest Rock N Roll Heaven as an ideal match for the Mach Three mare. I do like Rocknroll Hanover as a sire and I also think his sons A Rocknroll Dance and Pet Rock will leave their mark as sires in the Southern Hemisphere. They appear as ideal matches for the Mach Three mare with one of them being from a Cams Card Shark mare and the other from an Artsplace mare, similar to Rock N Roll Heaven.
HBV Photo
What was Shez All Rock like as a foal, weanling and yearling? When she was born she was a touch on the small side but had grown into a good average size by the time she was twelve months old. She had a good attitude to everything. Unfortunately she was unwanted at the APG Yearling Sales, except for Mark Pitt bidding on her. Mark’s uncle in the Riverina had enjoyed quite a bit of success with Timely Loch, a half sister to Just Irish Loch, so that made Mark keen on her. Mark did a wonderful job in developing her and of course winning those early races with her including the NSW Oaks. You have probably seen all her major wins. Which one did you enjoy the most? Yes they were all enjoyable but the
Our breeding numbers are declining every year. Do you have any suggestions as to how to halt the decline? I don’t know that I have the answer but paying out the Breeders and Owners Bonuses on horses until the end of their five year old seasons would be a big help. Many of our leading stallions are now either deceased or have arrived at veteran stage. Who do you see or which sireline do you see as taking over in future years? I am impressed with the Rocknroll Hanover sireline and so as mentioned earlier, I think his three shuttle sons will lead the way into the future. Bettors Delight has been a dominant sire in both hemispheres so I would expect a son or sons of his to continue that dominance. I am also impressed with three young stallions in He’s Watching, Sunshine Beach and Captaintreacherous, so wouldn’t be surprised if all three were highly successful stallions in the future.

Jimmy Freight
New Image Media
The FREIGHT train is coming Just how good is this son of Sportswriter? Jimmy Freight is one of the most exciting horses in North America. The Ontario based three-year-old son of Sportswriter has been ultra-impressive in 2018. At the start of June he blew away several of the North America Cup aspirants in a division of the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes at Mohawk, winning by 4½ lengths in 1:50.4. Unfortunately he wasn’t staked for the North America Cup so on this night he remarkably took on the free-for-all pacers in the Mohawk Gold Cup finishing a meritorious third. Back to his own age group the following week in a $100,000 division of the Ontario Sires Stakes, Jimmy Freight was ridiculously good, cruising home with plenty left in the tank by 6¾ lengths in 1:49.4. He’s certainly a star on the rise. Jimmy Freight is interestingly bred, being out of a Western Ideal mare who is out of a Life Sign mare, so he has three strains of both No Nukes and Abercrombie in his pedigree. Interestingly, Sportswriter’s brilliant Australian bred son Lumineer is out of a mare by Rocknroll Hanover (a son of Western Ideal) who is out of a mare by Jate Lobell. So he too has three strains of No Nukes in his pedigree.

He's Watching
yearlings showing plenty of zip It comes as no great surprise to hear the many excellent reports by New Zealand trainers of the He’s Watching yearlings they have broken in. When you have yearlings sired by a brilliant and unbeaten two-year-old of the year in North America and a 1.46.8 world record holder Meadowlands Pace winner at three with enormous speed and perfect gait, it is only natural to expect that many of his progeny would show similar traits. To date He’s Watching has had strong support from breeders throughout New Zealand and Australia and, despite being a smaller and very muscular type of stallion, many of He’s Watching’s progeny have quite a bit of scope to them.

He’s Watching - Parfait Bromac Colt
Trent Yesberg, training under the banner of Ripple Creek Farm at Ohoka in North Canterbury, is a big He’s Watching supporter, having broken in both the He’s Watching-Papavera (by Mach Three) filly named Schiavone and an unnamed He’s Watching-Parfait Bromac colt he bought from Bromac Lodge’s dispersal sale. “The colt is an absolute stunner to look at and has been really great to handle and gait. He exudes class. I have worked with 70-80 weanlings over the past year and he is the best looker I have had for a while,” Trent said. “The filly has also pleased me and has that real up and go feel to her with a
lovely way of going. They both show good balance, hold themselves really well and have no wastage when they pace, being very economical in their gait.”
Methven based Danny McKendry might have picked up a real bargain when he outlaid only $6000 for Experia at the New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale supplementary session.
Cran Dalgety from Kentuckiana Lodge has also been working with two very promising He’s Watching yearlings, a filly and gelding.
The He’s Watching colt is from the In The Pocket mare Kamwood Smarty (4 wins), the dam of five winners to date.
Hereslookingatyou, a filly, was bought for $35,000 at the Australasian Classic Yearling Sale and is a very powerful stocky type from May Fly (2 wins), a Mach Three winning sister to top pacer Devil Dodger. The gelding, Pocket Watch, is a taller type, being from the Christian Cullen mare Samantha Chloe a half-sister to Meticulous (p2, 1.55.6; 9 NZ wins) “I do like the filly. She is a fluent pacer, very clear up front and has a lot of fizz about her which I like,” Cran said. “The gelding also has a very nice way of going and I like him as well. He worked down nicely before I sent him out for a spell.” “At this stage both are definite chances to make it as racehorses.”
“He is a beautiful pacer, not very big but is a late foal. He has a lot of potential, is keen in his work and gives you a real buzz when you drive him,” Danny said. Clark Barron, one of Southland’s long time leading trainers and drivers, has a very promising colt in training for Brendan Fahy. Named Raksjameson, the colt is from the top producing Artsplace mare Raksplace and is a halfbrother to Raksdeal 1.54.9, Rakarolla, 1.52.3 and Raksmach, 1.55. “He is a good type, strong gaited, and at this stage I can’t fault him,” Clark said. Canterbury trainer Bruce Hutton is training two fillies by He’s Watching - one named Rhythm Maker and another who is un-named. Rhythm Maker is a filly from a pedigree with speed to burn. Her dam Pomis Princess, by Courage Under Fire, has already left the brilliant Arms Of An Angel 1.49.5 and Trevs No Angel 1.52.7 and Bruce already thinks a lot of her. “I really like her. She is good gaited, very nippy and just wants to run.” The other filly is from Laura’s Legend, a well bred Christian Cullen mare from Imagine That. “I am very impressed with her as well. She is good gaited and also very speedy,” Bruce said.

We spoke to a number of trainers and horse educators about their experiences with the progeny of He’s Watching. Paul Weidenbach “I broke in two fillies that were purchased at the APG Yearling Sales by Kevin Pizzuto - one from That’s My Secret at the Melbourne Sales and one from Its Only Money from the Sydney Sale.” “They were both naturals from day one, just beautiful pacers with great temperaments and so easy to do anything with.” “I have broken in hundreds of pacers over the years and these two yearlings are as good as anything I have ever laid my hands on.” “He’s Watching might be the next leading sire.”
Alright and maybe that’s what he’ll be.” “He is spelling now and is growing into quite a big yearling.” Jamie Cockshutt “ I have bred a colt down here in Tassie from my good racemare Belliciouslips.” “To describe in a single word I would say he is a cracker. Rod Ashwood broke him in and said he was a natural from day one, so sensible and wants to run.” “He is built like the brick outhouse. I couldn’t be happier with him.” Rob Essex “I do like buying at the Melbourne APG Sale as I believe there is more depth in the pedigrees. This year a filly by He’s Watching from Three Secrets looked appealing and I’m now glad I was able to purchase her.”
Norm Jerrick “The colt I bought from the Melbourne Sale is just a natural. He is light on his feet with a lovely nature and was very easy to teach him the pacing caper.”
“She travelled up to Queensland without a hitch and then broke in really well. She is a lovely pacer with lots of brains and I’m looking forward to her joining the growing list of successful Maywyn horses.”
“He is from a mare called More Than
“At this stage thinking about an APG
Fillies Final in Brisbane, if all goes according to plan.” Beau Tindale “I was given the task of breaking in two yearlings by He’s Watching for two different owners. Both were big strong types with excellent temperaments.” “There was a filly from Majordreams, who is related to a champion filly my Dad broke in for Mick Lombardo a few years back in Mazzini Magic.” “The other was a colt from Angelica Rose and both were easy to break in and were fluent going pacers.” Cindy and Peter Rixon “We have a really strongly built colt that we bred from our mare Mia Sue.” He is a lovely pacer to drive and very sensible - was so good to break in.” “We have no doubt that if you clicked him up he would want to go for you. We are really pleased with him at this stage.” Amy and Neil Day “We were given a high priced colt from the Sydney APG Sale to break in - out of the mare Oh Eye See.” “Well he was a handful and had a mind of his own, but once we had him in the cart and accepting the hopples he was a terrific moving colt. Before turning him out we had him gelded so we would expect a more settled horse when he comes in for his next prep.”

YOU HAVE TO MAKE TIME TO HAVTIME Murray Little is a senior partner in the Invercargill law firm Cruikshank Pryde. He’s also deeply ensconced in the harness racing industry as a breeder, owner, sales purchaser, sales vendor and administrator. He enjoyed his biggest success this year with Havtime, a Mach Three two-year-old filly he part owns, winning the $150,000 NZ Yearling Sales Series Final at Alexandra Park. Murray’s story is somewhat unique in that he’s a successful businessman who’s decided to purchase a property near Oreti Beach just out of Invercargill and manage his working day around getting hands on with his horses.
24 | Alabar
You’re obviously extremely busy, you even won seven races with a mare named Donthavtime, but you’ve made time to become hands on with your horses. Tell us what your average day looks like? My day starts at just after 5am. I have ten horses at the beach at the moment - two mares (One Christian and Suvarno Hanover), two race horses (Mach’s Back and Betterthanbrie), three weanlings that are boxed, a rising two-year-old Art Major filly out of Popular which I really like and two rising three-year-olds - one out of Donthavtime and the other out of Suvarno Hanover, both by American Ideal. After mucking out the young ones in the boxes and they’ve had their hard feed and lucerne, the older horses are fed and checked. It takes about an hour. I have flood lighting on the corners of the 400 square metre barn so it’s like daylight. I head home for breakfast and then hit work at about 8am until lunch time when I go back down and give all the horses lucerne and hay. I’ve built four two-bay shelters with feed bins so it works well. Then it’s back to work until 4.15 when I head back down and feed up and muck out for the night. I usually spend a bit of time in the boxes with the young ones just handling them. I’m home for dinner around 6.30. On weekends I spend a lot more time down there. This is all mainly in the winter months as in summer Tank Ellis trains from the other barn on the property and the racehorses are in work. I have Tank, Nathan Williamson and Kirsten Barclay down here training for me and of course Barry Purdon has Havtime. In summer I have the odd drive on the beach. So basically the horses winter here and that for me is the busiest time. I have the sales yearlings here until a month before the sales when Kirsten takes them for the final preparation so summer time is
not so time consuming. What was the feeling like the first time you drove a horse on Oreti Beach? Driving on the beach is fantastic. The horses love it and on a nice morning you can’t beat it. We have been lucky the last two years as the weather has been pretty good. You’ve recently ventured into purchasing yearlings at the sale, buying well-bred fillies in partnership with your nephew Malcolm. In 2016 you and Malcolm purchased several fillies including a Mach Three from the smart filly Bettor Move It for $36,000? This filly, now racing as Havtime (named after your company, Havtime Breeding Limited) has gone on to be a lovely filly. I have a cherry orchard in Cromwell which is managed by Malcolm, my nephew. Malcolm got back into the horses in a big way when I convinced him to take a half share in the Mach Three filly Popular a few years back. We had jogged horses together on his block about thirty years ago and taking a share in the filly got him back in the game big time. It’s hard to control him at the sales and he has bought a few on his own as well. We have seven that we own half each along with his wife
Havtime
Sandra. All are fillies plus a Bettors Delight weanling out of Popular. The best one of course so far is Havtime. We both do a bit of study but more so Malcolm than me. We both liked this one and were lucky enough to buy her. I thought the fillies were cheap buys at the sales that year. She was initially prepared and broken in by Stephen Boyd along with the other two we bought together - an A Rocknroll Dance filly and a Bettor’s Delight full sister to Pembrook’s Delight. He liked them all. The Dance filly has had a hoof issue but he really liked her and I had her at the beach for six months. She is a lovely horse so hoping she will come through this year. They then went to Nathan Williamson and after Havtime’s first start here in Invercargill he said send her to Barry and the rest is history. If someone told me we would get a first in a listed race and two placings in a Group 1 at the start of season I would have grabbed it. She is a lovely filly and they are all saying she will be better next year as she fills out her frame. Winning the NZ Yearling Sales 2yo Fillies Final at Alexandra Park must have been a huge thrill? Winning the Sales Series Final was the icing on the cake. It was our first win

at “the Park” and our first big race. The second in the Sires Stakes Final was also a big thrill as they ran a record and her second was a great effort. As well as Havtime you’ve enjoyed great success with the progeny of Mach Three? Yes I loved the Mach Threes. Every one I’ve had has been a winner. I understand it was the founding partner of Cruikshank Pryde, George Cruikshank (an iconic industry figure well known as being a partner in the Auckland Cup winner, Sapling) who gave you your introduction into harness racing? George Cruickshank gave me a foal that was related to Sapling so that started me off in ownership so I got the bug although I had been around horses most of my life. I rode ponies as a child so it never leaves you. They are my favourite animal.
and One Dream (a full sister) was the second foal so we missed out there. I subsequently bought my partners out of Dream Angel and have bred from her since. She has done a good job and Mach’s Back is a 1.52 horse and hopefully there’s a bit more to see of him yet. You later purchased the nine win mare Suvarno Hanover and you’re currently racing Betterthanbrie, a very promising three-year-old filly by Betterthancheddar out of her? Betterthanbrie I have a lot of time for. I sent two mares back to Cheddar this year based on her performances. Tank has high hopes for her next season. She caught something near the end of the season but she’s looking good at moment and putting a bit of beef on. With any luck she has a bright future.
You’ve also had success as a Yearling Sales vendor selling the first foal from Donthavtime for $50,000 and this year selling a striking Breeding horses can sometimes He’s Watching colt out of Suvarno involve as much luck as skill. You Hanover for $18,000 at the Premier were nearly the breeder of the Sale at Christchurch. champion filly One Dream? I’ve sold a few at the sales. The Wayne Adams had Solitaire for us. Auckland Trotting Syndicate bought The deal with Jill Smolenski was one this year and they say he broke in that we could get a foal out of her. well. I will continue to sell the colts Unfortunately we took the first foal unless tempted or they don’t make (Dream Angel) which couldn’t pace their reserve. The He’s Watching colt last year I think will be a good buy. He was a sensible horse and easy to handle. I heard they are happy with him. (He is now with Robin Swain who says he’s a lovely clean gaited pacer – paces everywhere as does his other He’s Watching. Robin likes him and feels he’s a type that could well be at the workouts around Christmas). Bruce Stewart Photo Betterthanbrie

Donthavtime is currently in foal to A Rocknroll Dance. I’m really looking forward to that foal. You’re in an almost unique position to view the industry from a multitude of angles. What are your thoughts on the breeding industry and its future? Southern Harness has been great down here and I’m proud to be part of it. We have to look after everybody in the industry if we can. We rely a lot on volunteers and as we get older, if young ones are not coming through, we could face extra costs which will be hard for the smaller clubs. I take my hat off to all those people that assist on race days all over the country. Kidz Kartz is a great concept and is working well. I am positive about the future but we need to get breeding numbers back to what they were. Higher stakes will help and the correct input from the powers that be will assist. There’s positive progress to date. I do not believe a club should ever be in a loss situation when they run a race meeting. They should be funded. They supply the product but at the moment also have to pay for the services. It’s the only business I know where you supply the product, take a risk and still have to pay. Hopefully this will change with the new betting returns and more infrastructure put into the racing venues. Breeding can only grow and prosper if the returns at the end of the day are worthwhile. The highlight as a breeder is when the horse you’ve bred and raised wins a race. When Betterthanbrie and Mach’s Back both won at Wyndham on Alabar Kindergarten Stakes day early this year that was my highlight.

In the latter cruising home by 5 lengths in 1:51.8. Owned in North America, she will no doubt end up racing there – an exciting prospect as she has the ability to do something very special indeed.
VINCENT by Art Major Dam: Kept For Pleasure (by Safely Kept) Breeder: Sloys Co Pty Ltd Owner: WR Feiss Highlights: Regarded as being Australasia’s next superstar, Vincent was unbeaten in his only three starts for the season winning the Gr2 Franklin Cup and Cambridge Futurity Stakes before his brilliant victory in the Gr1 Auckland Cup. Tragically this was to be his last start - after just 19 starts for 16 wins including four Gr1 victories. An injury suffered in the lead up to an Australian campaign led to him being purchased for stud duties. A stunning son of Art Major from one of Australia’s best families he now presents breeders with a truly exciting opportunity.
WINTERFELL by Majestic Son Dam: Una Bromac (by Live Or Die) Breeder: TG Casey Owner: TG Casey Highlights: As a sire, Majestic Son has had an incredible record-breaking season with his crop of three-yearold trotters. Winterfell was the star of this outstanding crop, winning five of seven starts including two Gr1’s – the NZ Harness Jewels 3yo Ruby and Northern Trotting Derby along with the Gr2 NZSS Trotters Ch’ship. An imposing individual, he has future Grand Circuit trotting star written all over him.

Sunshine beach
The reports are encouraging The wait is nearly over for Sunshine Beach with his first North American two-year-old crop now up and running, already with promising results. It is just the news both breeders, owners and stallion owners like to hear when you have trainers being impressed with the ability of a young stallion’s first progeny when they first appear at early trials or races. Sunshine Beach has been one of North America’s most sought after young sires, serving excellent books of mares each season, which is testimony to the types of youngsters he is leaving. Likewise, throughout Australia and New Zealand many breeders have been glowing in their praise of their Sunshine Beach youngsters.
Sunshine Beach - Presidential Affair Colt
Greg Payne rapt with his Sunshine Beach yearlings Greg Payne has been one of New Zealand’s most successful spotters and trainers of young horses for years and when he says he has a horse as good as any young horse he has trained you sit up and take notice. Prestige Seelster 1:54.2 - Sunshine Beach’s first race winner
The horse in question is Macz Brother, a Sunshine Beach $25,000 weanling sale purchase which is a half-brother to the outstanding Mach Three filly Maczaffair, WA Oaks and $344,599 to date. “He is every bit as good as any horse I have handled at this stage of his preparation. I can’t fault him,” Greg said. “He is such a lovely balanced and gaited horse. He will probably end up in West Australia.”

Greg also is thrilled with Alta Charade, a $24,000 Sunshine Beach yearling colt purchased at the Australasian Classic Sale. The colt is from Alta Panache, by Elsu, which is a half-sister to such very good horses as Alta Christiano, a now promising sire and former top juvenile, Alta Ronaldo and Alta Camilla, the dam of the speedy Art Major pacer Alta Maestro. “He is a striking black colt, again is lovely gaited and is built in proportion which is a good sign.” “Really, I can’t fault either of them.” The leading North Island trainer and horseman Tony Herlihy is seldom without a good juvenile filly in his barn and has a likely prospect with Millwood Chanel, a Sunshine Beach filly from Katie Carville’s former threetimes race winning Bettor’s Delight filly Millwood Manhattan.
A $30,000 purchase at the Australasian Classic Sale, Tony said he bought her on type and also the fact he trained her dam to win as young filly. “She is nice gaited, has good manners and while a growing sort of filly, she could well make a two-year-old. I like her.” Beautifully gaited colt Well known and highly respected Canterbury horseman Robert Anderson also has good news about another Sunshine Beach colt he recently broke in. Named JM King, the colt from Lifetogether is bred and owned by prominent breeder and racehorse owner Tom Richardson who also bred a younger full brother to go on with in the future. “He is a powerful and very good looking type of horse. Importantly he is beautifully gaited and wants to do it,” Robert said. “I really like him.” Robert has also positive reports on the many A Rocknroll Dance youngsters he has worked with. “I am particularly thrilled with a two-year-old filly named

Rocknroll Mama which broke in exceptionally well and will make a very promising three-year-old,” Robert said. The filly is a half-sister to the good horses Bettor Pack A Pistol and Bite The Bullet. “In fact, I have really liked all the A Rocknroll Dance youngsters I have worked with.”

Its Rock And Roll
Ashlea Brennan Photography
IT'S ROCKING AND ROLLING OUT WEST The number 441 has turned into a lucky one for WA owners Liam O’Connor and Jim Currie (Kemprust Pty Ltd). Lot 441 at the APG WA Yearling Sales last year was a strongly built dark bay colt by A Rocknroll Dance from the Bettors Delight mare Miss Worthy Whitby. So Liam, in consultation with his trainer Colin Brown, shelled out $37,500 for this impressively bred lad. Miss Worthy Whitby is the first foal of the imported mare Spirited Storm (by Artsplace). Spirited Storm, who is quite closely related to Panorama, Grinfromeartoear and Shoobees Place, is now the dam of eight foals of racing age including the Australian Two Year Old Colt of the Year The Storm Inside 1.54.6 $225,950 and this season’s promising two year old Firestorm Red

1.57.5 $23,920. Miss Worthy Whitby herself won three of her fourteen career starts including Heats of the Bathurst Tiara, Australian Pacing Gold (at Albion Park) and the WA Diamond Classic. She was purchased at the 2009 APG Melbourne Sale by WA breeder and owner Dr Ed Dewar. Its Rock And Roll showed some class and determination right from his debut start on 6th February this year. That afternoon at Gloucester Park he led , was headed up the home straight but fought back to win by over a metre, stopping the clock in 1.58. It is rare for youngsters and often older horses to fight back and win after being headed close to home. Since then he has returned to the racetrack on a further seven occasions,
winning twice and being placed on four occasions.
for some expert horsemanship from trainer / driver Colin Brown.
The two wins couldn’t have been any better timed - one in a Group One race and the other a Group Two.
So what attracted Liam and Jim and their trainer Colin Brown to Its Rock And Roll in the first instance. We recently had a chat with Liam about his stable star.
The first of those wins was on 2nd March in the $100,000 WA Sales Classic rating 1.56.6 over the 1730 metre trip, whilst the second was some eight weeks later in the $50,000 Champagne Classic over 2130 metres. Its Rock And Roll was equally as impressive in defeat in the $100,000 Pearl Classic Final in mid June when after drawing the dreaded 9 alley at Gloucester Park, he stormed home three wide in the last lap, from second last at the 800 metre mark, to finish in third position.
What attracted you initially to this colt? Two years earlier I had been at the Melbourne Yearling Sales and took a liking to a colt from Spirited Storm in fact I was the under bidder on him. He turned out to be The Storm Inside and went undefeated as a two year old. So when I noticed that Lot 441 in the WA Sales last year was from a half sister to that colt, I was immediately keen to cast my eye over him at the Sales.
From just eight starts to date (4th July 2018), Its Rock And Roll has now accumulated $117,188, so a handsome return for Liam and Jim and reward
After inspecting him were you still keen? Oh yes - as soon as we saw him out of his box you could see a presence in
him. He was strongly built and got a big tick from our trainer Colin Brown on his conformation. The vendor, Doc Dewar, had told us he had a great work ethic so it was just a matter then of bidding for him. Now you own him so how did you feel after early training reports? It seems a little scary to think back and say this but he just kept us living the dream. He had that X factor about him from day one. He paced straight away, loves his work and has a personality all of his own. So where to from now? Our immediate aim is the $125,000 Golden Slipper on 13th July. The depth in the WA two year olds this season is the strongest for years so Friday 13th will be unlucky for someone with a poor draw, but hopefully not us. We think he is as good as any of the two year olds in the state.

Danny and Joanne Zavitsanos

Owning the dream Danny Zavitsanos has become one of the sport’s leading owners and recently achieved his dream when Enhance Your Calm won him his first Group One. With a true passion for the sport and winning, we will continue to see Danny in the winner’s circle for years to come. How did you become involved in Harness Racing? I was introduced to the sport by a friend, Paul Fox, when I was in my early twenties. He was obsessed with a horse called Golden Reign, he caught my attention and I thought to myself, if I was successful in business this is a sport I would like to be involved in. Do you remember your first horse? Yes, in 2011 I purchased two horses, at the APG yearling sale. The first was a filly, Jodilla. I was looking at a horse in the stall next to her. She caught my

your stable? I am extremely passionate about this sport. I absolutely love the thrill of the chase for that great horse.
She made it to Bathurst Gold Crown Carnival and won the Gold Consolation in 2012. It was my first winner. I retired her in 2015, probably a little prematurely, and put her into foal. She has had two foals since then, the first which is now in work and should race as a two year old next year.
I have a partner in Tasmania, Warren Viney, who I met through Beau Tindale, who offered us the purchase of a horse called Soho Wonder. Since then we have had a great racing partnership and a friendship for life. To answer your question many late nights and endless phone calls to trainers, partners, vets, transport etc etc etc but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I like to keep my finger on the

pulse. You appear to spread your horses out a bit throughout New Zealand and Australia; has this always been part of your plan? What plan? I started with two horses and I said to my wife I’ll just purchase 2 yearlings each year for five years!!! The passion for the sport escalated very quickly and so did the quantity of horses I owned. I had approached Mark Purdon in Melbourne in 2016 and introduced myself after having no success with Group 1 races in Australia and I was hopeful he would take me on as an owner which he did. I also attended the New Zealand sales in 2017 hoping for Group 1 glory with the All Stars Stable. Enhance Your Calm recently gave you your first Group 1 win. Can you describe the both the thrill of this win and also how you came to own Enhance Your Calm? There really are no words to explain how fantastic that was! After all this time and many, many, many horses we finally had a Group 1 champion. I really feel he is a special horse! Mark Purdon called me, he said that he had just trialed this trotter, Enhance Your Calm, and that he felt good and would I consider buying him. I have had horses with Mark for about 2 years so I jumped at the opportunity because I knew Mark could have offered the horse to many of his owners, I was extremely grateful and humbled for the opportunity and in turn he has rewarded me with my first Group 1 win! Is there anything in particular you like about the progeny of Majestic Son? Yes, I had purchased my first trotter in Australia, War Dan Destroyer, he is a very nice horse and is also sired by Majestic Son. With me being a little superstitious, when I saw the sire of Enhance Your Calm was Majestic Son,
along with the Mark Purdon, I knew that I was on a winner. When purchasing a yearling can you explain what your look for? I’m probably not the best judge of a horse. I like to flick through the catalogue. My kids call it Dad’s bible. I like to look at the blood lines and look for early foals. I’ve had my fair share of non-starters over the years. I was a little superstitious and sometimes I would buy a horse because of the lot number, other times I have just liked the look of the horse. I tend to leave it to the experts now. What is something that you would like to see changed within the harness racing industry? Overall I think its heading in the right direction. Prize money could always be better. I do have a few trainers and I think the smaller stables can struggle. If the prize money was better they could charge accordingly and see greater rewards for their efforts. I would also like to see more recognition for the owners. Without owners there wouldn’t be an industry. Whether you own a share in a horse or dozens of horses more should be done for the owners.
Enhance Your Calm
What gives you the most enjoyment in harness racing? I love attending the race meetings, especially the Group 1 races. I enjoy the social aspect, talking the talk with trainers, drivers and owners sharing our highs and lows. We have travelled far and wide to race meetings, often dragging our extended family along with us to join in the anticipation and thrill of the race. Seems they have also got the bug and we recently purchased a yearling from Alabar so we can race together. Further highlights have been winning Owner of the Year last year with 122 winners, my first Group 1 win with Enhance Your Calm and this week winning the Len Smith Mile at Menangle with Cruz Bromac, who gave me my first Group 1 win on home soil. Outside of harness racing how do you enjoy spending your free time? Ultimately I enjoy spending time with my family. I grew up in Lakes Entrance and I like to get down there occasionally with my family and enjoy some down time and a spot of fishing with my kids. I’m also a mad Melbourne supporter and enjoy going to the games with my kids who have also been brainwashed to support the Red and the Blue.
