It is with great joy that I welcome you today to the fifth annual Wine & Run for the Roses. It is sure to be an incredible day of friendship, Run for the Roses Derby, and support for the arts. As the largest fundraising event for the Muscarelle Museum of Art Foundation, it is a reminder of the invaluable role our patrons’ generous support plays in the continued growth and accomplishments of the Museum. An event like Wine & Run for the Roses is also the perfect time to look back on our success in the past year. The Muscarelle continues to increase its local, national and international presence with its most recent blockbuster exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty. The exhibition drew tens of thousands of visitors from across the country to Williamsburg introducing them to the culture of the region, its culinary delights, and accommodations of excellence. The exhibition was comprised of an unprecedented selection of thirty masterpiece drawings from Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo allowing patrons to explore Leonardo’s philosophy of beauty as contrasted with that of his young rival Michelangelo. The Muscarelle found itself appearing in countless national and international publications such as the Washington Post, New York Times, BBC and the prestigious Art Newspaper. In February, the Museum welcomed students for an event, which saw 1300 students engage with these masterpieces in one brief evening. Accomplishments of the year were not limited to Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty. Michèle K. Spike, in a first-ever collaboration with the William & Mary School of Law, curated an important exhibition on Matilda of Canossa, the Tuscan Countess who’s political strategy, dangerous liaisons and assassination, ushered in the Renaissance in Italy, but also set the stage for women to inherit, own and manage property… and she founded the first law school in Europe in 1088. There has never been an exhibition in America on this important woman who ultimately influenced Thomas Jefferson and George Wythe in their establishing the first law school in America at William & Mary. The Muscarelle continued to serve as a laboratory for experiential learning once again offering our Curating, Collecting and Connoisseurship course that resulted in a publication and exhibition; as well as College faculty working with students in the Museum on a Japanese print-making course that resulted in them curating an exhibition of works by Toshi Yoshida. For our community, we are especially proud of our collaboration with the Greater Williamsburg Women’s Association in our kids Summer Arts Experience. Our success is a reflection of the initiative, time, and passion of our many supporters with whom we owe many thanks. In particular, I would like to thank the members of our Events Committee, Wine Committee, Muscarelle Museum of Art Foundation Board of Trustees, and the Museum staff. Their unwavering dedication ensures the continued success of Wine & Run for the Roses wine auction event. We look forward to seeing you again next year for more celebration and a Run for the Roses. In the meantime we hope you will join us for the countless exhibitions, lectures, and events that your generosity makes possible. Best wishes, Aaron De Groft, Ph.D. Director & CEO Muscarelle Museum of Art Muscarelle Museum of Art Foundation

The Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William & Mary is a community cultural center and laboratory for experiential learning. The Museum is a model of curatorial excellence; in the past year the Museum has been host to extraordinary national exhibitions such as Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty and a strong portfolio of mission-driven exhibitions such as Matilda of Canossa and the Origins of the Renaissance; 21st Century Diplomacy: Ballet, Ballots and Bullets; Celebrating the American Scene: Painters of the Federal Art Program; American Naturalism: Selections from the Owens Foundation; and Tree to Mountain: The Woodblock Prints of Toshi Yoshida. The Muscarelle houses a permanent collection featuring over 5,500 works including English and American portraits of the 17th and 18th centuries; European and American prints and drawings from the 16th-20th centuries; Japanese prints; African art; Asian ceramics; German Expressionism; and Abstract Expressionist art. The origin of the Museum can be traced to the first gift of art to the College in 1732. The idea for a museum on campus was born through a rediscovery in the 1970’s of a Georgia O’Keeffe painting hanging on the wall in the Dodge Room of Phi Beta Kappa Hall. Spurred by this discovery, William & Mary President, Thomas A. Graves, Jr. and Miles Chappell of the Art History Department set out to unearth other artworks owned by the College. They found a sizeable collection of nearly 300 works that the College needed to preserve and protect. Alumnus Joseph L. Muscarelle and his wife, Margaret Muscarelle, generously supported the formation of a museum to house the rediscovered pieces and the Muscarelle Museum of art opened its doors in 1983. The Muscarelle family continues to honor this legacy by dedicating invaluable support to the Museum. The American Association of Museums (now American Alliance of Museums) accredited the Muscarelle in 1988, making it the first university/college museum of art in the Commonwealth of Virginia to be accredited by the national museum body. The Museum is reaccredited now for the third time and was called “pound-for-pound the best university art museum in America.” The Muscarelle Museum of Art strives to nurture the full integration of an active art museum into the life and liberal arts mission of the College of William & Mary. The Museum strives to serve as a catalyst for art exploration and experiential learning at the College and in the surrounding community.
13
The Muscarelle lives out its mission statement through original exhibitions and popular programs and events. The Muscarelle has become a cultural center through its community events, which includes the popular monthly First Tuesday and Third Thursday lecture series. Acclaimed experts in their art-related field participate, giving lectures that illuminate relevant topics in the art world. The remarkable popularity of these lectures is demonstrated by Dr. John T. Spike’s Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty lecture, which drew standing room only crowds not once, but twice. We are just as proud of , our collaboration with the Greater Williamsburg Women’s Association for our Children’s Cultural Arts Experience. The Muscarelle has also become known for its annual Wine & Run for the Roses Wine Auction Event. The event is composed of a silent auction, wine reception and a live auction, featuring unique wines and exclusive lots only available through this event. The auction serves as the largest fundraiser for the Museum and directly enables the continued growth and success of the Museum. The Arts play an integral role in the cognitive life of the College and cultural landscape of the community. The Muscarelle has and will continue to serve as a dynamic environment for exploring art at all levels of interest and experience. ALL IMAGES

About The Rare Wine Co. The Rare Wine Co. was founded in 1989 by Mannie Berk. In 2002, a panel of wine journalists and wine trade leaders voted us the Best Wine Importer in America, as part of Food & Wine magazine’s American Wine Awards. And in both 2002 and 2004, Mannie was named a Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. But what really sets The Rare Wine Co. is that they are leaders in so many areas. To begin with, they are celebrated importers, representing more than thirty of Europe’s most revered producers, including such iconic names as Giacomo Conterno, Pingus, Bartolo Mascarello, Alvaro Palacios, Jacques Selosse and Domaine Huet. Their goal is not to concentrate on a single country or region but to have a portfolio that represents “the best of the best,” with a strong emphasis on classic winemaking. They also have what is arguably the greatest library of old and rare wines of any wine merchant in America. Their library allows them to provide both private and restaurant clients perfectly aged wines, dating back to the 19th century, for their cellars and for special occasions, and to do so at reasonable prices. Finally, over the past quarter century, they have been fierce advocates for wines and regions they believed were neglected in the world spotlight. Mannie Berk, Founder Thanks in part to their work, wines ranging from Chablis and Cote Rotie to old Champagne and traditional Rioja enjoy far more prestige today than they did when they founded their company. They have even helped restore to prominence wines threatened with virtual extinction. Today, both Madeira and traditionally made Barolo are thriving in part because of The Rare Wine Co.’s passionate advocacy.

About Mannie Berk
After an earlier career in government in Chicago and Boston, and a few years writing and teaching about wine, Mannie Berk couldn’t resist the call of a vast quantity of old Madeira he found in London in 1987. Two years later he founded The Rare Wine Co. Since that time, he has made RWC America’s finest non-auction source for older wines, including Madeira, of which he is considered the country’s leading authority. In 2011, he edited and co-authored the second edition of Noel Cossart’s Madeira, The Island Vineyard, which the International Cookbook Awards named the best book on European wines published in the United States that year. In 2002, he was named Food & Wine’s Best Wine Importer, and he is a two-time James Beard Award semi-finalist and two-time Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year.
About Our Wines

Caromont Farm is located 23 miles south of Charlottesville, in the heart of Virginia’s Piedmont region. They produce both fresh and aged cheeses using milk from Gail Hobbs-Page’s herd of Alpines, Saanens, and La Mancha goats. Caromont’s cow’s milk cheeses are produced from milk sourced from Nathan Vergins’ herd of grass fed Jerseys at Silky Cow Farm in nearby North Garden, Virginia. All cheeses are made “on farm” and are hand ladled, tended daily, and follow a seasonal path. At Caromont, they strive to create cheeses of “place” using quality milk from animals raised on the principles of natural husbandry and grass-based management. Gail, Daniel, and everyone at Caromont Farm, holds a strong belief that great cheese comes only from great milk, and they remain true to that fact. caromontfarm.com
They make several aged sheep’s milk cheeses in the Piedmont of Virginia where the climate is as good for cheese as it is for wine. They make several types of aged sheep’s milk cheese. Their signature cheese is Piedmont, followed closely by the Cracked Pepper. Everona Dairy started because of a Border Collie! In 1992 Dr. Pat Elliott went to a Wine and Fiber Festival. A man was demonstrating what his Border Collie could do. He happened to have two pups for sale and she came home with one of them. Then, of course, in a little while, Pat needed something for the pup to do and so she got some sheep. Then she needed something productive for the sheep to do, she thought about milking them. People do milk sheep, don’t they? Of course. She found out that more sheep are milked in the world than cows, and that their milk is very special for cheese-making. Tours include the cheese making operation, and a visit to the sheep, followed by a cheese tasting of their products. Tours must be scheduled ahead. everonadairy.com

MEADOW CREEK DAIRY | Galax, Virginia Meadow Creek Dairy is a family farm in the mountains of southwest Virginia. At an elevation of 2800ft, the combination of pure water, clean air and deep soils produce an ideal environment for growing diverse, mineral-rich pastures. We have worked closely with our Jersey herd to give them the best care, develop the genetics best adapted to our farm, and in the process produce the highest quality milk. We practice sustainable farming methods, managing the land and cattle for health rather than high production. Our primary tool to achieve this goal is intensive grazing management. This involves giving our cattle fresh grass every day; they are not allowed back on the pasture already grazed, allowing the grass to regrow and preventing overgrazing. We use no herbicides or pesticides on our land. Our only crop is grass. We are therefore able to provide excellent nutrition for the dairy herd while improving the health and fertility of our land. meadowcreekdairy.com

A Virginia Norton wine was even named “best red wine of all nations” at the Vienna World’s Fair in 1873, and was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World’s Fair of 1889 — the year the Eiffel tower was constructed. Virginians have made wine for more than four centuries.

THE WILLIAMSBURG WINERY | Williamsburg, Virginia Wessex Hundred, the 300-acre farm that is home to The Williamsburg Winery, Wedmore Place, Café Provencal and The Gabriel Archer Tavern, offers a one-of-a-kind wine and food experience in the heart of Colonial America. The Williamsburg Winery, one of Virginia’s most acclaimed wineries, was established in 1985 by the Duffeler family. Wines produced here are appealing to wine enthusiasts as well as the occasional wine drinker. Its wines have won numerous national and international awards including the prestigious Virginia Governor’s Cup, awarded to the state’s highest rated wine, for its flagship red blend, Adagio. The 38+ acres of vineyards that surround the winery offer a beautiful backdrop to the old-world style building that houses the winery. Tours of the facility and wine tastings are held daily. The Gabriel Archer Tavern provides guests a memorable farm-to-fork dining experience that’s both delicious and nourishing. Relax and reconnect while dining outside under the wisteria-covered terrace complete with breathtaking vineyard views. Lunch is served daily as well as brunch on Sundays. Café Provencal brings the flavors, sights and smells of Provence to your table. Locally-sourced fish and vegetables ensure that your meal will be fresh and flavorful. Local wines are also featured, together with an extensive list of choices from around the world. Dinner is served Tuesday through Sunday. Wedmore Place is a European-style country hotel featuring 28 uniquely designed rooms and suites. Each room is named and patterned after a different province of Europe and is decorated with antiques and paintings to reflect the culture and history of the region. All rooms feature wood-burning fireplaces and king size beds. williamsburgwinery.com

AUCTIONEERS
Ben Ferdinand
Moriah Spicer
Ben entered the world of rare and fine wine in 1993 and joined forces with John Hart/John Hart Fine Wine in 2003. Ben has played a vital role in the successful growth that HDH has achieved since its inception and is currently acting as senior consignment advisor. His insight into various facets of the wine market has assisted in cultivating relationships with important collectors around the world. Blessed with boundless energy and a refined palate, Ben is extremely knowledgeable with Bordeaux, having had extensive experience tasting the classics of the 19th and 20th Century. Along with Paul and Michael, he has considerable experience as an auctioneer. Ben first held the gavel at age 25 making him one of youngest fine wine auctioneers of his time. Having now overseen well over 150 commercial auctions, Ben has developed a personable style that has earned him praise as one of the industry’s leading fine wine auctioneers.
Moriah joined Hart Davis Hart in 2009, and quickly became a powerful force as a Consignment Advisor, working closely with collectors all across America. Her wine education was enhanced by joining colleagues for a lengthy tour of the vineyards of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Loire, and in 2013 she began to serve as an auctioneer for the Hart Davis Hart auctions in Chicago. Buoyed by her natural enthusiasm and quick wit, she quickly became a regular auctioneer for the company, and has begun to be more involved with charity auctions across the U.S. including the Triangle Wine Experience, the Classic Wine Auction, and the High Museum auction. She looks forward to joining Ben Ferdinand at Wine & Run for the Roses.
Vice President, Hart Davis Hart Wine Co.
Outside of the auction room, Ben regularly donates his services to a number of charitable events around the United States. A native of Greenwich, CT, Ben now resides on the north side of Chicago. When not at his desk or in a cellar, he can be found on the nearest golf course or with his growing family.

PINGUS AMELIA 2008 IN ORIGINAL WOOD CASE
LOT
2
INCLUDES: 6 bottles (750ml)
Peter Sisseck’s Pingus is Spain’s most iconic and expensive wine. It is as coveted by collectors as Coche-Dury’s Corton-Charlemagne, Guigal’s singlevineyard Côte-Rôties, and Giacomo Conterno’s Monfortino. Fewer than 400 cases are made, and it can be impossible to find. Yet, Peter makes an even rarer wine, Amelia, from another ancient vineyard in Ribera del Duero. Peter considers the century-old vines in the Amelia vineyard to be the most perfect clone of Tempranillo he’s ever seen. In fact, if he ever needs to replant any of his Pingus vineyards, he takes cuttings from Amelia. The greatness of Amelia is based on the incredible vines that produce it.
Not much of Amelia is made: just 23 cases. But those 256 bottles make American Pingus lovers the luckiest in the world, as Amelia is sold exclusively to the United States and The Rare Wine Co. “A wild, highly aromatic bouquet of black raspberry, cherry-cola, incense and rose oil, with a sexy note of Moroccan spices. Lush and creamy in texture offering expansive dark berry flavors … sweet, focused and very long …” Wine Advocate Sponsored by:

INCLUDES: 9 bottles (750ml except as noted) What a superb addition to your cellar...nine bottles of wine all rated Perfect 100!
Château L’Evangile Pomerol 2005 (1 bottle) “Dark in color, almost purple black, with pure tapenade and hints of ripe plum and berry. Fullbodied, with layer upon layer of velvety tannins and chocolate, berry, vanilla and tea flavors. Lasts for minutes. I am blown away by this wine. Best after 2015.” WS Perfect 100 Donated by: Babs & Mike Bowers
Château La Mission Haut Brion 1989 (2 bottles) “This is a profound bottle of La Mission-Haut-Brion with a deep ruby/purple color and a gorgeous nose of espresso, tar, tobacco, mineral, and blackberry, blueberry, and black currant fruit. The extraordinary smorgasbord of aromatics is matched by a full-bodied, viscous, opulent style of wine with sweet, jammy fruit yet enough tannin and acidity to provide uplift and definition. This is a prodigious, multi-dimensional wine that is a modern-day legend.” Anticipated maturity: now2050. Robert Parker 100 Alto Moncayo Bodegas Alto Moncayo 2009 (2 bottles) “This wine is full-bodied, powerful (with at least 15.5% natural alcohol), concentrated, rich wine made from very old vines and tiny yields. I gave perfect scores to the prodigious 2007 and 2009, two of the greatest expressions of old vine Grenache from the province of Aragon that anyone could have desire. The both possess plenty of black raspberry, blackberry, kirsch and licorice characteristics as well as an undeniable minerality and precision that are remarkable given their full-bodied, massive concentration and intensity.” Robert Parker 100

Château Clinet Pomerol 2009 (2 bottles) 375ml “The greatest Clinet since the incredible duo produced by the late Jean-Michel Arcaute in 1989 and 1990, the 2009 was off the charts in terms of quality and potential. The wine boasts an opaque black/purple color in addition to a gorgeous bouquet of truffles, charcoal, asphalt, blackberries, blueberries, and meaty, smoky notes. This dense, unctuously-textured Pomerol is built like a skyscraper with multiple layers, sweet tannins, and enormous concentration as well as length. It should drink well for 30-35 years. While it’s hard to eclipse a 100-point wine (1989), the 2009 appears to be the finest Clinet has ever made.” Robert Parker 100 Donated by: Brandy & Grant Hagen
Mas de Boislauzon Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet 2007 (1 bottle) “The single vineyard cuvee, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet (approximately 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre) is a wine of great purity and elegance exhibiting notes of blue and black fruits, truffles, roasted porcini, meat juices, and spice. Layered, full-bodied, dense, powerful, and rich with abundant tannin, it will benefit from three to five years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following 20-25. It is definitely a vin de garde for a Chateauneuf. “ Anticipated maturity: 2011-2036. Robert Parker 100 Donated by: A Friend of the Muscarelle
Alvear Pedro Ximinez de Anada 2011 (1 bottle) 375ml “Alvear’s 2011 Pedro Ximenez de Anada is the most amazing Pedro Ximenez I have ever tasted. It is an amazing effort that looks like molasses. Notes of macerated figs, chocolate and caramelized tropical fruits emerge from this full-bodied, unctuouslytextured wine. While sweet, it has enough acidity to balance out its richness. This astonishing 2011 Pedro Ximenez will last as long as any reader of this newsletter.” Robert Parker 100 Donated by: A Friend of the Muscarelle

“Thomas Jefferson, a native Virginian and a “man of the soil,” was also an avid viticulturist who dreamed of creating a “great American wine based on a French model.” Today Jefferson’s vision is a reality and this sample proves it. These wines are the finest that Virginia has to offer...TJ would be proud!!”
Barboursville Octagon 2008 (1 bottle) “Octagon is this growing region’s definition in red wine. What explains its honors and age worthiness is that it disclosed itself, over decades of empirical investigation of this terroir with many clones of many wine grapes. Fine garnet color with very forthcoming aromas of lush, fresh fruit, emphasizing ripened cherry, with well balanced secondary berry aromas and flavors, still very youthful. A vintage favoring elegance over density, as in Octagon IV (1999), the wine benefits from a period of decanting before serving and opens with great warmth, showing fine age worthiness. Best from 2015 to 2025.” Donated by: Stuart & Dan Dopp
Linden Vineyard Hard Scrabble Red 2008 (1 bottle) Linden Vineyards is located on an abandoned hard scrabble farm on the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains. “All the grapes used to make Linden wines are grown in the mountains and valleys surrounding the winery. RdV Vineyard Lost Mountain 2010 (1 bottle) “RdV with Bordeaux grapes, planted on a granite hillside, have produced world-class wines that marry the elegance of Bordeaux with the bold spirit of California. Concentration, power and elegance best define the 2010 Lost Mountain. A subtle entry quickly reveals a dense mid-palate of black fruit and minerality. The wine is framed throughout by a high density of ripe fine grain tannins & an energetic acidity yielding a long linear finish that should provide great aging potential.” Donated by: Stuart & Dan Dopp

Adagio 2010 (1 bottle) “A very bold upfront wine with loads of jammy fruit. The blackberries and blueberry notes are accentuated with some elegant mature darker fruit such as figs, dates and prunes. There is a hint of spice (warm cinnamon) with molasses and soy. The earthy notes come across with hints of olives and mushrooms with a touch of nuttiness. The oak is very integrated into the weight of the wine and the tannins are smooth and graceful. “Saint-Emilion is a key wine town in the Libournais district of Bordeaux, important in terms of both quality and quantity. It lies just a few miles north of the Dordogne, in the final stages of the river’s journey from the hills of the Massif Central hills to the Gironde estuary. The town is renowned as much for its beautiful buildings and scenery as for its wine. Its steep, narrow, cobbled streets, overlooked by its Romanesque church and the iconic 13th-century Tour du Roy tower are a reminder of the town’s long history. There have been vineyards around Saint-Emilion since Roman times, and today the Saint-Emilion wine appellation is one of the most prolific in the Bordeaux region, generating more than 250,000 hL of wine each vintage. It is also responsible for some of the most prestigious, long-lived and expensive wines in the world; Chateaux Cheval Blanc, Ausone, Angelus, Figeac and Pavie, whose wines sell for hundreds of dollars per bottle, are all situated in and around Saint-Emilion.” Château Cheval Blanc St-Emilion Grand Cru Classe 1971 WS 89 Château Cheval Blanc St-Emilion Grand Cru Classe 1993 WS 90 Donated by: Babs & Mike Bowers Château Cheval Blanc St-Emilion Grand Cru Classe 2004 WS 94 Donated by: Dr. Ed & Linda Lilly

Committee member and a huge supportor of the Wine & Run for the Roses wine auction, Mike Bowers hand selected these six incredible wines from his cellar. You may have been fortunate enough to enjoy the hospitality of Babs and Mike, and if you have, you know what knowledgeable collectors they are... and that they really enjoy sharing their wine with friends old and new. Cos D’Estournel 2000 St. Estephe “Deep bluish purple in color with a reticent but emerging bouquet of cedar, licorice, blueberry, cassis, vanilla, and lead pencil shavings, this medium-bodied, slightly sinewy Cos d’Estournel has relatively high tannin, an excellent mid-palate, and a persistent finish. Purity and classicism are hallmarks of this top- flight wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.” WS 96 Pontet Canet 2003 Pauillac “One of the great successes of the vintage and certainly one of the most profound PontetCanets made over the last decade is the 2003. Deep purple to the rim with a glorious nose of scorched earth, black currant jam, smoke, licorice, and roasted meats, it is full-bodied, incredibly powerful, dense, with low acidity but high tannin, broad-shouldered, and savory. This is a stunning, pure, classic Pontet-Canet that should be at its best between 2010 and 2035.” WA 95
Lynch Bages 1996 Pauillac “In the flight of young wines, with all the vintages of the 90’s represented, this wine stood out for its absolute purity of creme de cassis, ripe fruit, medium to full body, high tannin, wonderful sweetness, massive richness on the mid-palate, and abundant power, density, and ripeness. It is clearly the finest Lynch Bages since the 1989 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025.” WA 94 Léoville Barton 2003 St. Julien “This is a stunning inky purple-colored effort revealing a tight but promising bouquet of damp earth, forest floor, powerful ripe cassis and black raspberry notes intermixed with licorice and leather. Formidably-endowed, structured, dense, concentrated, and backward, this brawny 2003 should prove to be one of the vintage’s most enduring successes. It needs to be forgotten for 7-10 years. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2035.” WS 98 Léoville-Las Cases 1994 St. Julien “This great estate, run with extraordinary passion and brilliance by Michel Delon, has once again turned in superlative efforts - wines that are unquestionably of first-growth quality. The 1994 is one of the top 10 wines of the vintage. It possesses a degree of opulence, fat, and intensity that is rarely found in a 1994 Medoc. The wine is full-bodied, with layers of highly extracted, wellbalanced and well-defined fruit and structure. The 1994 Las Cases is one of the great successes of the vintage.” WA 95+ Pape-Clement 1995 Pessac Leognan “One of the quintessentially elegant, complex, and most distinctive wines of Bordeaux, Pape-Clement has been in top form since the 1986 vintage. The 1995 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, and a

lovely nose of spice, lead pencil, minerals, smoke, and tobacco-tinged black currants. Rich and ripe, with medium body, sweet fruit on the attack, and an overall sense of elegance and impeccable equilibrium, this beautifully knit, complex wine is already enjoyable.” WA 92 Donated by: Babs & Mike Bowers Rounding out this lot are three wonderful selections from the Krochmal cellar all from the wonderful 2000 vintage. Bonnie and Glenn have supported the Muscarelle for years and one lucky bidder will get to enjoy these collectible wines chosen from their collection. Château Lagrange St. Julien 2000 “An impressive performance by Lagrange, the 2000 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color with obvious notes of melted licorice, creme de cassis, and toasty new oak. This ripe, dense, fullbodied St.-Julien is chewy, thick, high in tannin, large-bodied, and impressively long and dense.” Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. WA 93 Château Duhart-Milon Pauillac 2000 “Loads of plum, tobacco, meaty and cedary character on the nose. Full-bodied, with lots of chewy tannins and a long, luscious finish.” WS 90 Carruades de Lafite Rothschild Pauillac 2000 “Wonderfully ripe and decadent, with tobacco, meat and ripe berry aromas, with hints of currants. Full-bodied, and very velvety, with unctuous fruit flavors. Long and exotic aftertaste. Terrific wine. Best after 2010.” WS 93 Donated by: Bonnie & Glenn Krochmal

LEGENDARY FIRST GROWTH FROM AN OUTSTANDING YEAR FOR BORDEAUX!
LOT

INCLUDES: 1 bottle (750ml)
Château Mouton Rothschild 1982 “This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last four to five years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. “The Rhone’s Chateauneuf du Pape has been one of the hottest categories of the new millennium in the American market, thanks in equal part to the nearly candied ripeness and full-bodied, chewy texture of these wines and to an unprecedented string of four consecutive very good to outstanding vintages between 1998 and 2001. Chateauneuf du Pape comes in a variety of styles, from restrained midweights to extravagantly rich, roasted, low-acid head-spinners with alcohol commonly in the 15+% range. The most rabid buying interest is concentrated on the latter category. Look for bold, liqueur-like aromas and flavors of cherry and raspberry complicated by game, leather, chocolate, earth, and roasted herbs and spices; lush, tactile mouth feel; and ripe, sweet tannins.” “Although 13 grape varieties, including five white grapes, are permitted to go into Chateauneuf blends, the typical wine is based on 75% to 80% Grenache, a classic hot-climate grape that produces robust, full- bodied wines with high alcohol, low acidity, and a tendency to oxidize quickly. Small but increasing percentages of Syrah and Mourvedre are frequently included to add color, aromatic complexity, spiciness, acidity, and structure.” Domaine de la Mordoree Cuvee de la Reche des Bois 2001 Mont-Olivet La Cuvee du Papet 1990 Domaine de Marcoux Vielles Vignes 2010 Domaine Lecios Cuvee Imperiale 2010 Clos du Caillou Cuvee les Quartz 2001 Domaine Charvin 2007 Domaine du Pegan Cuvee Reservee 2003 Domaine de la Janasse Cuvee Chauynin 2003 Close des Papes 2003 Bousquet des Papes Cuvee Glorie 2010 Domaine Pierre Usseglio Mon Aieul 2001 Le Clos du Caillou Reserve 1998 Sponsored by: Eddie & Cherry Robinson IMAGE COURTESY: ENOBYTES.COM

I have had the good fortune to taste all of Giacosa’s 1989s and 1990s from multiple sources over the last year, and therefore can report that these notes are representative of what readers can expect from well-stored bottles. I consider

1989 and 1990 – along with 1978, 1982, 1996, 2001, 2004 and 2007 – to be among Giacosa’s finest vintages. The bevy of Red Label Riservas in this article says it all. In 1989 and 1990 Giacosa produced an immense number of legendary wines. In fact, he is one of the very few producers who did exceptionally well in both years. In general the 1989s are a touch more layered and nuanced, while the 1990s are impressive for their massive concentration. If forced to state a preference, I would say 1990 gets the nod for its consistency from top to bottom.” Sponsored by:

Two couples or four guests will visit some of Italy’s finest wineries and have an incredible opportunity to experience Italian hospitality and be hosted by both highly acclaimed wine makers and proprietors. This trip is not something you would ever be able to book or schedule yourself. Appointments and tours were all personally arranged by Mannie Berk, importer and founder of Rare Wine Co. Let the adventure begin with the following: Giacomo Conterno - Private visit to the cellars and a tasting of Barolo Cascina Francia and Monfortino with Roberto Conterno. “There is something almost ecclesiastical about a cellar visit to Giacomo Conterno at the foot of Monforte d’Alba. Enter his gates and you immediately cross an imaginary threshold into a spiritual and sobering world. The winery has the feeling of a vast cathedral with soaring ceilings and open spaces. Impeccable oak casks, each beautifully varnished, line the cellar perimeters like a succession of small family chapels. Roberto Conterno glides slowly and steadily across the tiled floor as if he were a priest lost in a contemplative moment of prayer. He carefully wipes the spigots clean of each stray drop with a white handkerchief he keeps at his side. The official tasting of his wine is performed with the ceremonial precision and religious intensity of a First Communion.”

Cantina Bartolo Mascarello - Private visit with Maria-Teresa Mascarello, the winemaker and owner. “In 1990, Italy’s Noble Red Wines author Sheldon Wasserman called Bartolo Mascarello’s hand-crafted Barolo “the single finest Barolo made.” And in the years before his death, Bartolo was still considered a touchstone for those who prize the beauty of traditionally made Barolo. Today, it is the wine world’s great fortune that Bartolo’s daughter Maria Teresa—who took over Cantina Bartolo Mascarello in 2005—makes wine just as her father did. In fact, she is every bit as committed to her family’s methods and traditions as Bartolo was. And she may have brought even greater elegance and consistency to the wines through her own subtle refinements. G.B. Burlotto - Private visit to the cellars and tasting of Barolo with fourth generation winemaker, Fabio Alessandria. Your visit will also include lunch for four. A century ago, the Burlotto family towered over Barolo in the same way that Biondi-Santi did in Tusdany, or Vega Sicilia did in Spain. After the 1927 death of its founder, G.B. Burlotto, the house faded into obscurity, but it is now back in the spotlight, thanks to the brilliant winemaking of G.B.’s great-great-grandson, Fabio Alessandria. Fabio’s winemaking is throwback to earlier days, and he is one of the few remaining winemakers in Piedmont to still crush grapes buy foot. Today, many insiders consider Fabio’s Barolo Monvigliero among the transcendent wines of Barolo. TOP IMAGE COURTESY: FINEWINEGEEK.COM BOTTOM IMAGE COURTESY: NOTESVINEUSES.COM

Mauro has been the winemaker for the Giuseppe Mascarello estate since the late 1960s, succeeding his father, Giuseppe, and his grandfather, Maurizio, both legends in their time. And like them, Mauro is a traditionalist dedicated to long fermentations and aging in massive old barrels. ”Mauro makes some of the most compelling, traditional wines in Piedmont.” Antonio Galloni
Bruno Giacosa - Private visit to the winery and tasting with Bruno Giacosa’s daughter, Bruna, who today manages the estate. Your visit includes one night’s lodging for four guests and your choice of either lunch or dinner hosted by the winery. Piemonte’s Langhe region is famed for the great winemakers it has produced over the past century. Yet, few can rival Bruno Giacosa for not only the stature of his work, but the dizzying number of famous wines he has made over the course of a career that began in 1961. And while other men have made great wines in either Barolo or Barbaresco, only Giacosa has, for more than a half century, produced a steady stream of heroic wines from both zones. In fact, so remarkable have been his accomplishments that his legend transcends not only Piemonte, but Italy. He is, in short, one of the profoundly great winemakers of our time.

Alessandro Masnaghetti Vineyard Tour – Priceless! An afternoon privately touring Barolo’s vineyards with the man considered to be the world’s greatest expert! As in Burgundy, the great vineyards of Barolo are divided among countless owners. But until Alessandro Masnaghetti unlocked the door, no one outside the area knew who owned what. Tirelessly, Alesssandro researched every square inch of land for its history, soil, exposure and ownership. The end result was a series of maps whose level of detail is unprecedented, not only in Italy but the world. It is an understatement to say that he knows more about Barolo’s vineyards than anyone else alive. Your trip will be planned in whatever order you prefer. Sixty days notice is needed to schedule tours and tastings. Does not include airfare. One nights lodging for four is included and one lunch and one dinner for four guests. Donated by: Giacomo Conterno, Cantina Bartolo Mascarello, G.B. Burlotto, Giuseppe Mascarello, Bruno Giacosa, Alessandro Masnaghetti We will do our very best to schedule visits for your preferred dates. However, neither the Muscarelle nor the individual wineries can be held responsible if any visits cannot be arranged or it becomes necessary to make changes to the particulars. Requests for visits should be made at least 90 days prior to your requested dates. All visits must be concluded no later than August 31, 2016. We request that the visits for this trip to Barolo be limited to the period of April through August in either 2015 or 2016.

Domaine Joseph Drouhin Bonnes Mares 2008 “The grapes were really beautiful for this one,” notes Veronique Boss-Drouhin, and around one quarter of them were left to go into the fermentor intact and with stems. The Drouhin 2008 Bonnes Mares practically explodes on the nose and palate with tiny, wild berries, baking spices, and white pepper. One is conscious of the barrel with its resin and caramel notes, but they don’t intrude.” WA 92 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Musigny Grands Cru 2005 “The 2005 Musigny offers a compellingly complex nose of black raspberry, plum, cranberry, maraschino, truffle, flowers, raw meat, peat, and wet stone. Fabulously mouth-coating, with a plush, creamy texture, its tannins entirely sublimated, this finishes with soaring lift and uncanny clarity and refinement of flavor, incorporating a floral dimension almost as vivid as that accruing to this year’s Clos de Beze.” WA 97 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Musigny Grands Cru 2008 (2 bottles) Drouhin’s 2008 Musigny in expected fashion puts its stable mates in perspective with a multiplicity of ripe red berry; saline and chalky mineral; seductively floral; pungently spicy; cleanly carnal; and mysteriously scrubby and forest floor-like aromas and flavors. A near-kaleidoscopic interactivity enhances the invigoration, resonance, and refreshment of an archetypical wine of its appellation and vintage that should be well worth following for 20 years.”Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. Heitz Martha’s Vineyard 2001 (3 bottles) “This was a spectacular performance from this hallowed vineyard as well as one of Napa Valley’s great historic terroirs. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals a still youthful personality and will benefit from another five to seven years of bottle age. An opaque purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, flowers and background earth as well as spice. The old eucalyptus filled aromatics of a young Martha’s Vineyard are nowhere to be found as the 2001 is dominated by fruit and earth. Full- bodied and powerful with superb integration of wood, tannin, acidity and alcohol, this largescaled red is capable of three or more decades of cellaring. It is unquestionably a youthful classic, but it requires patience from its owners. Château Lafite-Rothschild Pauillac 2001 “The 2001 Lafite-Rothschild’s deep, saturated plum/purple color is accompanied by lead pencil liqueur- like notes intermixed with sweet red and black currants, plums, and cedar. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, with intense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears to be on a rapid evolutionary track. The classy 2001 should be at its finest between 20072020.” WS 96 Donated by: Glenn & Bonnie Krochmal Château Mouton-Rothschild Pauillac 1998 “Like many of its peers, the 1998 has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black/ purple-colored offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. This wine is extremely powerful, super-concentrated, offering notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. It is massive, with awesome concentration, mouth-searing tannin levels, and a saturated flavor profile that grips the mouth with considerable intensity. This is a 50year Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2012- 2050.” WA 96 Donated by: Clement & Cherry Brown

Château Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan 1998 “The 1998 continues to emulate the style of recent prodigious Haut-Brions. With all due respect to the glorious 1995, the 1998 appears to be the finest wine produced since Haut-Brion’s prodigious 1989 and 1990. The dense ruby/purple color is followed by classic, developing aromas of minerals, lead pencil, earth, and black cherries/currants. On the palate, additional dimensions and nuances unfold. Tannic and powerful, but with sweet fruit, ripe tannin, and great length and richness, this profound, firmly-structured Haut-Brion will require four to six years of bottle age; it should drink well for three decades.” WA 96 Donated by: Scott Cleckley Château Latour 2001 Pauillac “Extremely attractive aromas of blackberries and currants with just a hint of mineral and oak. Fullbodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Serious stuff.” WS 95 Château Margaux 1985 “This beautifully sweet Chateau Margaux has a dense plum/purple color and a huge, sweet nose of black currants intermixed with licorice, toast, underbrush, and flowers. Medium to fullbodied with supple tannin and a fleshy, juicy, very succulent and multi-layered mid-palate, this expansive, velvety wine has entered its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for at least another 10-15 years. “Revered critic Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, has honored us as the only producer in the entirety of his career to receive 100 point scores across three consecutive vintages of the same wine not once, but twice, with both the Schrader CCS and Schrader Old Sparky Cabernet Sauvignons. Beginning in 2001, ten-year retrospective tastings of our Cabernets by Robert Parker have also resulted in seven score revisions that recognize our wines at 99 or 100 points, a true testament to the strength of our winemaking philosophy. Our place as the world’s finest makers of Cabernet Sauvignon was further solidified in 2010, where for the first time in the history of Wine Spectator, two newly released wines received perfect 100 point scores in a blind taste test from esteemed Senior Editor James Laube. Schrader LPV Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (2 bottles) The 2012 Schrader LPV from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Las Piedras Vineyard benefited from ideal growing conditions throughout Napa Valley. This wine is black/ruby, shows lots of charcoal, scorched earth and an almost Graves-on-steroids personality. Deep blueberry and blackberry fruit, a hint of coffee and chocolate are all present in this impressive, very different style of Cabernet Sauvignon from Schrader. WA 94 Schrader RBS Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (2 bottles) This wine seems slightly more expansive, shares the black ruby/purple color with all of it siblings, and has a boatload of crème de cassis, incense, licorice, graphite and vanilla along with plenty of spice box and forest floor. This is a killer, full-bodied, super-duper, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 20 years.” WA 98 Donated by: Grant & Brandy Hagen

GET AWAY FROM IT ALL – ONE WEEK IN CAPE BRETON, NOVA SCOTIA

We are delighted to have Eliza and Frank, as part of the Wine & Run for the Roses family. They have offered up their retreat for you to enjoy. Read on to learn all about their getaway. “In the Gloaming” is a fully and lovingly restored 100+ year-old farmhouse that offers much more than a traditional Cape Breton “cottage.” It’s sturdy, cozy, and very, very comfy. It’s also fully and traditionally furnished (there are many true antiques) and fully equipped -- washer and dryer, pots, pans, and silverware, family-size fridge, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen satellite TV with DVD and VCR, CD player, microwave, outdoor gas grill, etc. Plus all linens are provided. The house sleeps up to six in the following configuration: 2/2/1 in the three bedrooms upstairs, and one in the bedroom/den downstairs. The kitchen is very large (old farmhouse size) and the dining room will comfortably accommodate six, as will the picnic table outside, overlooking the mountains and the water. The living room has a matching couch and love seat, and a big, overstuffed reading (or snoozing) chair. In short, except for the fact that
you’ll need to prepare your own breakfast, “In the Gloaming” is much like having your own, private B&B for the length of your stay. Then, of course, there are the views -- from the porch, from the windows, from the acres of land -- that will remove the breath from your body. And the sunsets (the house sits 40 yards from the shore, facing the mountains and the water)….and the eagles flying overhead. Moreover, walks along our stretch of Black Head Road, the untraveled, “dead end” stretch, are serene (typically, fewer than a dozen cars pass the house in 24 hours). And the area abounds with beautiful vistas, trails, and beaches. Also, “In the Gloaming” is just eight minutes from the Gaelic College, Cape Breton’s entertainment and cultural center. If such things are of interest, you will find much there to do and enjoy. Available a week in either June, September or October of 2015. Donated by: Eliza & Frank Parrish

By raising your paddle at today’s auction, you will join together in entirely funding this unique, essential arts experience. Specifically, you will provide this enriching, essential experience to these children by underwriting their tuition, art supplies, craft materials, program meals, and faculty -- elements without which there would simply be no Cultural Arts Experience.
accomplished community members as they grow and discover the world and themselves through the exploration of art (as they so beautifully did last year, when the program focused on the Harlem Renaissance ---its art, music, written works, and lasting legacy!). Through the Cultural Arts Experience, students and their parents are drawn into the Muscarelle’ s world class art collection and gallery spaces. Parents, who play a significant role in the program, share with us that the experience fosters in their children a confidence, curiosity, and creativity that carries well beyond the summer and into their school, social, and community lives. In short, thanks to the GWWA, the Muscarelle Museum, and your financial support, young lives are uplifted through art and self-expression! When the moment comes today, please raise your paddle high in support of this extraordinary program!
From its pool of applicants, the GWWA carefully selects 30 middle school students. Those chosen receive classes in painting, drawing, dance, poetry, literature and theatre -- classes that allow these children to discover and explore their individual creativity -- and, in the process, to build teamwork skills, communication skills, and self-esteem. Huet Vouvray Petillant Brut 2009 “This has the yeasty, savory, lemon and ginger richness of a fine champagne.” “Very fine bubbles and light gold colour. Nose of baked apple pie. In the mouth the mousse is really nice and persistent, the baked apple comes through with a clove edge followed by an enveloping, soft, creamy finish. Super depth and a lovely, distinctive wine. Deserves food.” CT 91 Huet Vouvray Sec Le Mont 2009 “The love affair continues. Deep, sensuous notes of lanolin, passion fruit, honey comb, pectin. Just loaded with waves of different notes in both the nose and the palate…crazy good.” “Medium gold in the glass. Pronounced nose of stone fruit and honeysuckle. Full bodied, oily viscosity, nice acid finish. Rich mélange of flavors evolve on the palate - lemon custard, honey, peach skins, and some nicely delineating salinity throughout. Château d’Yquem 1975 “The 1975 may turn out to be the greatest of the modern-day Yquems. When fully mature in another 2530 years, it may rival the extraordinary 1937 and 1921. This wine continues to evolve at a stubbornly slow pace. It is far more backward than recent vintages such as 1983 and 1986. Nevertheless, it is awesomely concentrated, has perfect balance, and displays the telltale Yquem aromas of vanillin oak, tropical fruit, pineapples, honeyed peaches, and grilled almonds. There is exceptionally crisp acidity that pulls all of the massive extract into precise focus. This is a wine of astonishing power and finesse, with a finish that must be tasted to be believed. It is a monumental effort that may well justify a perfect score in another decade. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2060. “ WA 99 Sponsored by: Gordon & Judy Angles

A TRIP BACK IN TIME: AN UNFORGETTABLE WINE JOURNEY FOR FOUR TO MADEIRA INCLUDES: Tasting, winery visit and vineyard tour with Ricardo Freitas of Vinhots Barbeito. Lunch or dinner with Ricardo. | Tasting in the 17th-century wine lodge of Pereira D’Oliveira, hosted by Luis D’Oliveira. A driver will be provided for a day tour of the island. Lunch or dinner with Luis. | Private tour and tasting at the Old Blandy Wine Lodge, founded 1811, in Funchal | Winery visit and tasting with Helena and Isabel Borges at the old house of H.M. Borges | Private tour and tasting at Blandy
On a 1950 visit to Madeira, Sir Winston Churchill was honored by the island’s British community with a dinner party. As a special tribute, his hosts opened a rare 1792 vintage Madeira bottled in 1840. When served in 1950, the wine was 158 years old, but in fine condition, still boasting Madeira’s trademark rich, sweet, velvety taste and room filling aromas of butterscotch, cocoa and coffee. Sir Winston insisted on serving the guests himself, asking each in turn, “Do you realize that when this wine was vintaged Marie Antoinette was alive?” Madeira’s longevity earns it a special place in the realm of old wine. What other wine requires over a half century to mature? And what other wine, when a century old, still benefits from several hours of breathing and can stand up to weeks in a decanter, without losing its complexity or its richness? And how many wines can live for two centuries and still offer not only the pleasure of their antiquity, but also the enjoyment of drinking? Of the hundreds of families who’ve produced and shipped Madeira over the past two centuries, few remain, including Blandy’s, Borges, D’Oliveira and Barbeito. The first three of these are proud survivors from the 19th century--their legacy secured by having stockpiled old vintages during and after the Phylloxera epidemic of the 1870s. Barbeito is much younger, having been founded in 1946, but its legacy of old wines is as rich as the other houses. Enjoy a winery visit to Barbeito and an extensive tasting with winemaker, Ricardo Freitas. Ricardo has married a deep respect for Madeira’s roots with profound energy and innovation. His work, and his wines, have been crucial in restoring the world’s appreciation for Madeira. Your visit includes choice of lunch or dinner with Ricardo. D’Oliveira is one of the greatest of the classic Madeira shippers, and one of the few to survive from the pre-phylloxera era. Founded in 1850, and an amalgamation of firms dating back to 1820, it is today housed in cellars that date from 1619. This small jewel of a company has always be owned by the D’Oliviera family. No other company on the island can boast such a wealth of great old Madeiras. These include five monumental Verdelhos from the family’s own São Martinho vineyards, vintaged in 1850,

1890, 1900, 1905 and 1912. There are no finer examples of mature Verdelho in existence today. You will sample Madeiras dating back to 1850 with Luis D’Oliveira. A driver will also be provided for a tour of the islands including lunch or you may choose to dine with Luis one evening. For 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine. The Blandys are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its long history and members of the family continue to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811. You will have a private tour of Blandy’s centuries-old wine lodge that will include a tasting of old Madeiras. H.M. Borges is an independent company founded by H.M. Borges in 1877. It is one of the oldest surviving producers. You will enjoy a winery visit and tasting with H.M.’s great-great-grandaughters, Isabel and Helena, who today manage their famous house. Donated by: Barbeito, D’Oliveira, Madeira Wine Company and H.M. Borges We will do our very best to schedule visits for your preferred dates. However, neither the Muscarelle nor the individual wineries can be held responsible if any visits cannot be arranged or it becomes necessary to make changes to the particulars. “At one time a perfect wine, my three-digit score has dropped simply because I am not sure the huge tannins this wine possesses will ever fully melt away. Nevertheless, it is still one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted for its tremendous singularity and intensity. The color is still a murky plum/purple that shows a bit of amber at the edge. The nose is strikingly intense, with an almost liquid minerality intermixed with fig, truffle, spice, plum, and black cherry as well as blueberry. In the mouth the wine is massive, with searing levels of tannins, but monumental levels of extract and concentration. I would not be surprised if some of the great 1928s or 1945s tasted like this in their first 20 years of life. This wine is still very backward, yet with decanting of 6-10 hours (the normal operative procedure when opening this wine), the wine is prodigious. A 50-year to 75-year wine? Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 2000 Magnum Signed by Roberto Conterno (1500ml) The ultimate and purest expression of Barolo can be found in bottles bearing the Giacomo Conterno name. In fact, they represent the ideal of traditional Barolo: rich, powerful, massively structured, and capable of long aging in bottle. “The 2000 Barolo Cascina Francia is beautifully fleshy and supple in its radiant red fruit, freshly cut roses and licorice. The 2000 is a wonderfully open, seductive vintage for Cascina Francia, yet the wine has more than enough freshness to drink well for many, many years. At times, the 2000 tastes like it could have been made yesterday! Round, silky tannins frame the generous finish.” Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030. WA 94 Donated by: Roberto Conterno Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero Double Magnum 2011 Signed by Fabio Alessandria (3000ml) A century ago, the Burlotto family towered over Barolo in the same way that of Biondi-Santi did in Tuscany or Vega Sicilia did in Spain. After the 1927 death of its founder, G.B. Burlotto, the house faded into obscurity, but it is now back in the spotlight, thanks to the brilliant winemaking of G.B.’s greatgreat-grandson, Fabio Alessandria. Today, many insiders consider Fabio’s Barolo Monvigliero to be one of the transcendent wines of Barolo. Each vintage, just a few double magnums are produced, mostly for the private use of the family. In fact, each of Fabio’s children were baptized with a double magnum of Monvigliero! Donated by: G.B. Burlotto of Verduno, Piemonte, Italy.

CVNE Situated near the railroad station in Haro, CVNE, like Lopez de Heredia, stands as a monument to Rioja’s enduring greatness. The firm was established in 1879,when two brothers decided to take advantage of the flourishing wine trade in Northern Spain. C.V.N.E.--Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España (The Northern Spanish Wine Company)--was created. The company is still owned by the original family and occupies the same buildings, mostly from the 19th century, around a courtyard near the train station. Pingus While other Spanish wines have achieved international recognition, Pingus is one of the very few that has joined the ranks of the world’s most coveted wines and is known and admired wherever great wine is discussed. Pingus has a sense of individuality that is often lacking in today’s wines. And that individuality makes it unlike any other wine in the world, let alone Spain. Pingus is made by the visionary Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck. Soon after arriving in Spain in 1990, Peter acquired a few ancient and created a wine named for his childhood nickname, “Pingus.” Robert Parker called the first vintage, 1995, one of the greatest young wines he’d ever tasted, and Pingus was quickly established as one of the world’s great wine collectibles. It routinely sells for $800 to $1000+ a bottle. Includes: Tour of the vineyards and visit to the cellars with a tasting with Peter Sisseck. You will end this magical day enjoying dinner with Peter. Alvaro Palacios If anyone embodies the promise and spirit of “The New Spain,” it’s Alvaro Palacios. His L’Ermita is widely considered— along with Peter Sisseck’s Pingus—to be the most important Spanish wine of the modern era. His contributions to Spanish winemaking have been so great that he was named Decanter magazine’s Man of the Year for 2015. One of nine children born to the owners of Rioja’s respected Palacios Remondo, Alvaro studied enology in Bordeaux, while working under Jean-Pierre Moueix at Chateau Pétrus. He credits his tenure at Pétrus for much of his winemaking philosophy and for showing him “the importance of great wines.” In the 1980s, Alvaro was drawn to the largely abandoned, ancient vineyards of Priorat. Priorat had been one of Spain’s important pre-Phylloxera wine regions. And with its unique terroir of steep hills and terraces, Alvaro believed he could make wines that rivaled the best of Europe. He acquired his first vineyard, Finca Dofí, in 1990. Then, in 1993, he located what is now regarded as the crown jewel property in Priorat, a precipitous, northeast-facing Garnacha vineyard on well-drained schist that had been planted between 1900 and 1940. Alvaro named it for a small chapel, or hermitage, that sits atop the hill. Today, L’Ermita sells for upwards of $1000 a bottle. Includes: A visit to the ancient village of Gratallops with Decanter’s Man of the Year, Alvaro Palacios. During your visit to his spectacular cellars, you will have a personal tasting with Alvaro. Alvaro will also accompany you on a guided tour of L’Ermita, possibly Spain’s most famous vineyard. Finally, you will receive a signed 3-liter bottle of 2012 Finca Dofi. It doesn’t get any better than this! Donated by: López de Heredia, CVNE, Pingus and Alvaro Palacios We will do our very best to schedule visits for your preferred dates. The original land grant for White Hall on the Ware River in Gloucester County was given by King William & Queen Mary to Francis Willis in 1690. Several prominent families have lived at White Hall, including the Byrd Family. Over the centuries the property has been depleted, and the Banks now have over 100 acres that are reached by a long, curving drive lined with mature cedars. They have lived at White Hall for the last 30 years, adding wings in the early 90’s to the main structure. The Party Barn was built in 2007 as a Virginia version of the Napa Valley Reserve hospitality room, and has hosted many wonderful celebrations and charity events. Their home and barn sit on the Ware River, and the South Eastern exposure affords both beautiful sun and moon rises.

STELLAR BORDEAUX

INCLUDES: 4 bottles (750ml)
Lynch Bages 1989 “The 1989 has taken forever to shed its formidable tannins, but what a great vintage of Lynch Bages! Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. Powerful and rich with some tannins still to shed at age 22, it is still a young adolescent in terms of its evolution and will benefit from another four to five years of cellaring. It should prove to be a 50-year wine.” Anticipated maturity: 2015-2065 WA 99+ Lynch Bages 1990 “This magnificent Lynch Bages has been drinking well since the day it was released and it continues to go from strength to strength. The biggest, richest, fullest-bodied Lynch Bages the fully mature 1990 exhibits an unbelievably explosive nose of black currants, cedarwood, herbs and spice. The majestic, classically Bordeaux aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, voluptuously textured, rich, intense wine with superb purity as well as thrilling levels of fruit, glycerin and sweetness.” Anticipated maturity: 2011-2026 WA 99 Château Pichon Longueville 1989 “The 1989 is this property’s finest wine in at least three decades. One of the most opaque wines of the vintage, with a black/purple color suggesting exceptional extract and super-ripeness, its aroma reminded me of essence of cassis and plums intertwined with the scent of smoky new oak. Spectacularly rich and ripe, with layer upon layer of compelling extract, this well-balanced, full-bodied wine has the requisite tannin and depth to age well for three decades.” Anticipated maturity: 1998-2030 WA 96 Château Pichon Longueville 1990 “A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate’s two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish.” Anticipated maturity: 2009-2029 WA 97 Sponsored by: Frederick & Donna Malvin

WE SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST INCREDIBLE COLLECTION OF 1995 BORDEAUX FROM REGGIE AKDOGAN’S CELLAR INCLUDES: 42 bottles (750ml)
Château Haut Brion 1995 (10 bottles) “It is fun to go back and forth between the 1995 and 1996, two superb vintages for Haut-Brion. The 1995 seems to have sweeter tannin and a bit more fat and seamlessness when compared to the more structured and muscular 1996. Certainly 1995 was a vintage that the brilliant administrator Jean Delmas handled flawlessly. The result is a deep ruby/purple-colored wine with a tight but promising nose of burning wood embers intermixed with vanilla, spice box, earth, mineral, sweet cherry, black currant, plum-like fruit, medium to full body, a high level of ripe but sweet tannin, and a finish that goes on for a good 40-45 seconds.” Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035. WA 96 Château La Mission Haut Brion 1995 (4 bottles) “This vintage is aging at a glacial pace and the tannins are currently more significant than their counterbalancing components of fruit and glycerin. As in most 1995s, the color remains a healthy dark plum/purple. One of the bigger wines of the vintage, the ripe, powerful Merlot component has buttressed the Cabernet elements, giving the wine plenty of body, tannin and La Mission’s classic asphalt, cassis, blackberry, smoky barbecue, meaty notes intermixed with a hint of hot rocks.” Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035?. WA 95+ Château Mouton Rothschild 1995 (17 bottles) “This wine is evolving into one of Mouton-Rothschild’s greatest vintages. It boasts an inky purple color, as well as a powerful, blockbuster nose of explosively jammy cassis intermingled with toasty new oak, minerals, and spice. The wine is layered, with extraordinary depth, richness, glycerin, and length. This is undoubtedly the greatest Mouton since the 1986, with a more precocious, up-front character than that wine. A formidable tannin level combined with low acidity, and magnificent layers of fruit suggest the 1995 will be approachable after bottling, but I expect it to close down (as most Mouton-Rothschilds do) after 6-7 years in the bottle, not to re-emerge for 15-20 years.” Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. WA 97 Château Lafite Rothschild 1995 (11 bottles) “This dark purple-colored 1995 displays the quintessentially elegant Lafite style in both the aromatics and flavors. Subtle lead pencil, black currant, and cedary notes emerge from the wine’s bouquet with coaxing. In the mouth, it is beautifully knit, medium-bodied, suave, and elegant, with no intention of being flamboyant and/or over-sized. This is a textbook, classic Lafite-Rothschild that should reward 1020 years of cellaring.” Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035. WA 95
