This project is a laboratory lo-

cated on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The project entailed organizing a successful plan with the use of laboratory requirements such as counter-space, safety equipment, support rooms, lab rooms, strenuous amounts of piping for the labs, and dark rooms. The strategy taken with this design was to make use of four proposed mechani-

cal towers that would not only locate all

mechanical piping needed for the labs in centralized, easily accessible locations, but they would serve as symbolic, aesthetic features from the exterior and experiential art pieces on the inte-

rior. These towers allowed for consistent rules to be created for the design such as the towers defining threshold moments, defining the location of the labs, and defining the primary circulation and entry points for the building.

The layout of the building revolves around the four main towers, all of which are directly connected to each lab and support space to enable the mechanical feed for the labs to be easily accessed and maintained. The material of the towers is a fluted concrete to emphasize the verticality to heighten the importance of the towers while allowing for an appealing interior finish for the lab spaces. As seen in the render on the left, the skin of the towers is peeled away to offer a threshold moment and an experience of what exists inside the towers. The second floor is the only floor in which the towers do not directly connect to the lab and support spaces, instead their presence is fully exposed as an interior aesthetic.

As seen in the floorplans, each stairwell always operates from one tower to the next to consistently offer the opportunity of the threshold moments while the towers are able to define each entry point and the primary circulation path.

Friends School overview - summer 2010

This project is a Friends School located at Jamaica Pond within Jamaica Plains, just outside Boston, Massachusetts. The Project enforced a strong emphasis on the relationship between building and landscape, while providing a logical and beneficial design for both the private (students, faculty, and those affiliated with the school), as well as the public (those visiting the existing site of Jamaica Pond).

The design achieves its success through a push and slip strategy that accurately describes it’s parti diagram, which allowed for the creation of the project’s concept: progression.

While the classrooms progress in height and size as their programmatic role becomes more sophisticated, the classrooms influence the location of small islands that are directly associated with each classroom, giving an interior and exterior educational space available to each level of the school’s education. The push and slip strategy is further emphasized by the structure of the building, which can be described as a modern-day flying buttress that serves as the primary structure of the building while pushing and slipping into the landscape and marking the location of each of the buildings primary entrance points.

Bike Manufacturing Facility overview - fall 2009

This project is located at an

abandoned lot within Jamaica Plains just outside Boston, Massachusetts.

The project entailed designing a bicycle manufacturing facility for Geek House Bikes, a small local business whom is wishing to expand their current headquarters.

The design was

required to include office spaces, a reception hall, a manufacturing area, public

bathrooms,

rooms, and public bicycle wracks.

The strategy taken for this

project was to design a structure that would resemble the mechanics of a bicycle, the result was a “pinch structure�.

This structure served as the

base of the projects design, as it is exposed on the interior and exterior, serves as bicycle wracks, and contributes to organizing the plan while allowing the building to hold a mechanical presence similar to that of a bicycle.

Bike Manufacturing Facility structural pinch

The pinch structure, the base strategy for this design, consists of a module that repeats throughout the project. The module consists of two 4” x 1’ columns, one 1’ x 10” column, one 10” x 10” beam, a steel cable, and steel brackets. The two 4” x 1’ columns are used for holding the 1’ x 10” column, the 10” x 10” beam, and cable in place while giving the entire module extra stability.

The module’s cable is tightened in order to pull the beam, causing the cable to be in tension and the beam to be in compression. For example, as the cable pulls down on one side of the beam, the other side of the beam is forced to move upwards, pushing on the slab it is supporting. The structure is called a “pinch structure” because the same situation happens with the adjacent module, except rather than the cable pulling down on one side of the beam causing the other side to move upwards, it pulls up on one side of the beam to cause the other side of the beam to move downwards, pushing down on the slab it is supporting. Therefore, one module’s beam is pushing down on the slab and the adjacent module is pushing up on the slab, causing a pinch. This up and down motion of the structure reinterprets the up and down motion of a bicycles pedals when in use. The pinch forces of the structure are further expressed and exaggerated via the design of the roof.

The most significant piece of

program for this design is the manufacturing area, which is a double height space with plenty of natural light and where the structure is primarily visible and experienced. The building itself includes both public and private spaces in order for Geek House bikes to have

their privacy when producing their custom bicycles and for the site to be bicycle friendly via the use of the public bathrooms, changing rooms, and bicycle wracks. The entire building is only one floor besides the manufacturing space which is sunk down into the ground, allowing for privacy and visitors or clients the ability to gaze down on the manufacturing process from the primary circulation path above.

Funerary Chapel Competition - placed 1st by peers and 3rd by critiques overview - summer 2010

This project was a competition to over a two week period to design a funerary chapel located on Moon Island, an island just outside Boston, Massachusetts. The use of walls within the site generates circulation, spaces, and varied experiences. These aspects are emphasized and exaggerated through the sue of a “permeable wall� concept.

While materials are being retained by the walls, they are not created into a permanent or still form by any means, but it is rather strictly control by its structure that is placed within the site.

Land that is retained does not and should not become useless, it should become part of the space that is formed in order to highlight the spirituality of a site. Knowing this, walls can be created without solid masses, such as trees in order to retain, yet filter light and views.

Within this proposed site, walls are penetrated by the surrounding, retained landscape. Depending on what material is penetrating though the wall, determines the experience you will encounter on your visit to the site.

The orientation of the walls is

essential for proper circulation. As you enter the space you are introduced to a wall, a tree, and penetrating vegetation through the masonry wall. Once you approach the next wall, you may proceed around the outside of the seawall in order to gaze down upon the

underwater urns. Otherwise, you may proceed down into the land urn space in which you begin to experience the water.

If exiting the urn space, the

steps hugging the chapel wall as well as a shallow slope rising towards the chapel and gathering area is available where the extruding structure occurs.

If continued around the outside of the seawall and arriving at the west side of the chapel, you will experience the penetrating stained glass form the chapel.

Funerary Chapel Competition permeable walls

The are six different aspects of the site that are being controlled: earth, water, light, views, structure and spirit.

The controlled land, views, and light primarily occur as you enter the site, while a wall peels back the landscape to reveal what is to come, while the adjacent treeline provides a filtered view of the rest of the site. Water is controlled by a wall that is settled thirty feet into the ocean from the coast line, creating a connection between the existing underwater urns and the newly created area for urns on the land. The water entering through the wall can be touched, experienced, or simply gazed down upon as you walk over a transparent, wood decking flood.

Structure is penetrating though a retaining wall as its extrusion resembles its truth on the other side of the wall. Spirit is controlled by the chapel, yet it is discretely released upon the rest of the site and those who visit it through the use of stained glass in carefully selected areas.

Alexandra Road Intervention overview

This project is located in Camden, a town located within London, England. This project followed a nine day visit to London in which the project’s site, Alexandra Road Estate, was visited and thoroughly examined. The current site includes a very linear, from east to west, and repetitive low-income housing development that receives frequent controversy on its appearance and form. In order to solve some of Alexandra Road’s current problems, this project entailed proposing an intervention for the site. This intervention consists of a two mile pedestrian path that moves directly though Alexandra Road.

The path moves a mile north and a mile south of Alexandra Road, both ends of the path connecting to two existing cricket fields. The path is meant to solve four issues that are within the Alexandra Road site itself as well as the surrounding site of Camden. These four issues are named: community connectivity, travel, health, and discovery. Each of these issues in which this proposal addresses contributes to the project’s thesis which was the main purpose for this project: establishing a successful thesis.

The path helps to redefine Alexandra Road by offering a community amenity to the site, marking the site as a London destination, allows for easier and faster pedestrian travel to the site and the cricket fields, promotes health as a run, walk, and bike path, and exposes existing conditions that are not otherwise noticed and/or taken advantage of without the proposed pedestrian path.

Alexandra Road Intervention drawings

The program for this intervention includes that of which supports the pedestrian path: a smoothie bar, lounge/stretching area, cafe seating, public bathrooms, bicycle wracks, and two green terrace conditions. Throughout the intervention, moments of Alexandra Road that are not otherwise seen or notice are exposed for experiencing in order to offer a new and improved site. The moments of the site that are exposed via this proposal are the existing train track in which the path is built above, the existing parking for the housing development, and the sites existing green space. One of the goals for this proposal was to allow the path to move freely through the site with no interruption of it’s material and form. The path’s structure includes suspended cables and concrete beams to tie in with the existing concrete and allow the path to be it’s own structural element with no added components. As one would experience the path, moments of departure occur in order to experience the three exposed moments and to access the program while allowing the main traffic flow of the path to be unobstructed by the circulation for the program. The intervention includes a “push and slip” strategy to successfully move hardscape and greenscape through the site in a rational manner.
