Star signs reveal travel insurance secrets NEW RESEARCH from Mondial Assistance reveals that, on average, Taureans make the most expensive travel insurance claims but are only the third most likely to make a claim. In contrast, Capricorns have the lowest claims costs but are the most likely to claim on their travel insurance. The company analysed its latest travel claims records to reveal interesting patterns, according to star signs, and is urging travel agents to remind holidaymakers about the risks of going abroad without adequate insurance. The company says that many people are tempted to cut out insurance to save money, but it could cost them more than the price of their holiday in medical bills, if things go wrong. According to the research, Capricorn, Gemini and Taurus are the top three signs most likely to make a claim on their travel insurance. The usually cautious Taurus also faces the highest average claim costs – 8.5% higher than the average – and surprisingly, the normally fastidious Virgos come second, but fortunately they don’t claim very often. Scorpios have the lowest number of claims and the second lowest claims costs, making them the safest travellers and while Capricorns have the highest number of claims, they are bottom of the claims costs chart, at 15.3% lower than average. Sagittarians are believed to be the luckiest star signs in the horoscope and don’t mind taking risks, but the research shows they are one of the safest travellers – with the third lowest claims costs and being the second least likely to make a claim. The company's corporate, travel and health director, Ben Smart, said: “Clearly, we can’t use horoscopes to determine whether travellers are more or less likely to experience an emergency on holiday, but this analysis highlights how much costs can vary. “Travel professionals need to advise everyone to make sure they take out adequate travel insurance, whatever their star sign. Our research shows that even the simplest problems can see the cost of medical attention run into hundreds of pounds. Treatment of an insect bite could cost more than £300, while a headache can cost a staggering £580 to treat. Agents need to remind customers that ditching insurance to save money could be a false economy if things do go wrong. Hospital treatment for sunstroke or a simple broken arm could easily run into thousands of pounds abroad, potentially costing a lot more than the holiday itself." newsbulletin ABTA reveals Brits’ summer holiday plans during the Olympics WITH JUST six months to go until London 2012, ABTA has revealed that approximately 2.5million people are expected to take time off work to attend events in or around the Games in London and other Olympic venues around the UK. According to research commissioned by the association, a further five million are expected to take time off to watch the Games on TV from home, while overall 40% of the British public are expected to take time off whether at home or abroad during the Games, which run from July 27 to August 12, one of the busiest times of the year for travel. The research reveals that excitement or apathy about the Games is split fairly equally, with 31% saying that although they will not take time off during the Olympics they are excited about them, while a further 30% say they plan to ignore them. The poll also shows that generations are split when it comes to feeling excited about the Games. The most fervent Olympics fans are the youngest with 38% of 15-24 year olds saying they are excited about the Games, compared to 28% of over 55s. The research also found that 12% of Brits say they are intending to go abroad specifically to avoid the Games and 9% are looking to go on holiday somewhere in the UK free from Olympics fever. The older generation appears to be the least keen on staying in the UK; with 22% of the over 65s intending to head overseas to avoid the Games and 18% of 55-64 year olds.

Notes from . . . n o t n a m r o N EEN A FUNNY couple of weeks – no two days have been the same and a real mix of enquiries. I attended the Council of Regions Meeting at ABTA and it was really encouraging to hear everyone’s area was a bit more positive and doing more bookings – great news. I still cannot understand some customers – we had one the other day who wanted us to quote for Australia, which we did, and then she came back and said could we do a quote for Tenerife – I don’t see any resemblance whatsoever! Someone tell me what planet she is on. I am trying to decide whether the new series of Benidorm will encourage people to go to Benidorm or totally put them off – I have a feeling that people will want to go just in case they see one of the actors! Numbers for our ABTA Meeting on Wed 7th March at the Cedar Court Hotel, Wakefield, are certainly shooting up and I urge anyone who is worried about ATOL reform or has any questions or even just talk to other travel agents – this is the meeting to attend. Mark Tanzer and Simon Bunce from ABTA will be there and also two people from the CAA and I am sure between them they will be able to make things much clearer for us so do email me if you want to attend Sandra@sandytravel.co.uk and of course it is always nice to see James and Emma from Leeds Bradford who are sponsoring the evening and I am also looking forward to hearing what is happening at LBIA. I do enjoy relaxing and looking at the Sunday paper that is until I come to the holiday section and adverts. Is it me or are a lot more operators advertising and only putting their own details? Come on, play nice and put that lovely phrase ‘or call in at your local travel agent’ I know you are paying lots for the adverts but I am sure if we were mentioned more you would get more business – not everyone wants to talk to large companies! ‘Greatness can take a lifetime but it can be achieved in a second’ and ‘worry looks around – sorry looks back and faith looks up’.

The last piece of the puzzle: solving the travel Website market dilemma by TONY GODLEY, founder of Professional Travel Advisors
OR MORE than ten years travel agents, whilst embracing the internet, have lost business to it. Most agents regularly experience the very irritating scenario where potential clients drain knowledge from them and then head for their PCs in order to source their own arrangements, believing (wrongly) that they will achieve significant cost savings. All this after having on many occasions taken up hours of the travel agent’s time - time which really should have been paid for considering the level of expertise involved and the relevant advice that has been imparted, let alone taken free under false pretences with no intention from the outset of giving business to the travel agent.
F
The objective To re-educate the public, to remind them of the pitfalls of making their own arrangements and to drive them in significant numbers back to where they should always have remained, in the tender care of professional travel agents. How? Join our global campaign at www.professionaltraveladvisors.com to win back business lost to the internet and at the same time acquire new clients that are the right fit for you and for your organisation, simply by sharing your experiences and expertise with the general public. This Website is revolutionary for the following reasons: ● It is similar to tripadvisor except that all the reviews are left by professional travel agents. ● Travel agents not only leave their reviews, but have their company and personal profiles shown big and bold alongside these reviews, which are potentially seen by millions of people every day. ● The site encourages the public to contact the travel agent in order to have the comments that have been made clarified or expanded upon.

●
Because people generally decide where they are going to stay before undertaking the rest of their travel arrangements, agents are contacted by people who have yet to finalise their itineraries. This provides agents with a golden opportunity to secure new business from these individuals who will be experiencing gratitude for the information that has been imparted. What about time wasters? The site is very hard-hitting in terms of stressing to the general public the folly of making their own arrangements and sets out clearly and repeatedly the advantages of placing their business in the hands of travel agents. Also, the public will have the opportunity to view the travel agent’s company and personal profiles. All this means that by the time they contact the agent, they will have made the conscious decision that they want to deal with an agent and will also have decided which agent. In this way time wasters are mainly “filtered out”. No communication or conversation will ever be a waste of time. It is true to say that if an agent in the UK is contacted by, for example, a person from the US regarding a review they wrote about a hotel in Singapore, that person is likely to transact the majority of their business at their point of origin. However, there is still the issue of goodwill to consider. In other words, if an agent assists someone, wherever they live, there may well be a benefit to the agent at some point in the future. For example, the person enquiring may have friends, relatives or colleagues in the country where the agent is based and be willing to recommend

the agent to them, or know people who are planning to visit that country at some point who will require assistance with their ground arrangements. Furthermore, if an agent writes a glowing review of a property in their own country, this may well attract the attention of potential visitors to that country who might prefer to book that element of their travel through a locally based agent. The site is about travel agents and for travel agents. There is no advertising on the site meaning that the messages are not diluted and there are no potential competitors to travel agents shown. Travel agents are able to leave reviews regarding airlines and car rental companies, not just hotels and resort areas. As it is these several elements that form the spine of most trips, it is right that they are all put under the microscope, although of course this site is mainly about where to stay. There is a travel agents forum area, where agents can ask open questions and seek advice or information from fellow travel professionals if they wish. We are offering free membership to all agents until March 1, 2013, after which a minimal fee will be payable. This will give everyone the chance to see the site grow and develop before having to decide whether or not to stay on board. We hope that this will encourage agents everywhere to join us and to help us take this concept all the way.✦

usa Why selling an e h t o t r u o t d e t r o c s e u o y h t o b s it f e n e US b and your clients smos.
, sales director, Co
by GARY ANSLOW ANY OF you have been selling escorted touring holidays in the USA for many years. I joined Cosmos (and the travel industry) 14 months ago, and I have to say that, when I was being taught about the touring market, a few of my pre-conceptions were changed…
M
The variety of tours – and tourists I thought that escorted tours would be full of my grandparents’ friends being shepherded on and off coaches at the “tick box” tourist sites, as opposed to the variety I have since learnt about - staying at a fun themed room at the Heartbreak Hotel in Memphis, soaking up the sights and sounds of Mardi Gras with the locals in New Orleans or watching the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta with hundreds of colourful hot air balloons taking to the skies above New Mexico. It’s the sort of thing that appeals to a much wider age profile. Reasons to sell an American escorted tour I’ve learnt that an escorted tour in the USA is possibly the best, cheapest and most relaxing way of seeing a vast area or several famous sights with travel, accommodation and guided excursions all included in the price. The USA isn’t called the ‘big country’ for nothing and having the hassle of booking car hire and driving long distances on the ‘wrong’ side of the road doesn’t appeal to me, and I’m not alone. We are proud that our choice of escorted tours is the biggest in the market, covering the States from coast to coast and most places in between. The benefits of specialist operators Before I joined Cosmos I hadn’t been an extensive "tourer", but I always wanted to travel around Cuba and had a fantastic trip there in 2005. I had aspirations of doing it myself, but just couldn’t find the time or insight needed, so we used a specialist operator who knew exactly where to go and when, and took away all of the hassle. Customers are being ever more demanding when it comes to their travel plans. This can range from wanting the convenience of flying from their local airport to wanting to experience a tour of New

England after they have visited friends and family for a week in Florida. With this in mind, many operators - including ourselves have a range of flexible travel options to make customers’ journeys as easy as possible. As examples, for comfort and ease we can book an airport hotel for early or late flight departures or arrange a private home pick up. We can even sell tour only, if you are booking flights separately for your customer – the choice is theirs. Why not suggest a few nights in a city to really soak up the atmosphere and see the sights – either before or after the tour? For extra comfort, you can suggest room upgrades – ideal for making a holiday really special. That’s not all… An escorted touring holiday can be a high earning option giving you the chance to sell flight upgrades, airport hotel nights, back to back tours or even adding a week’s cruise. Some companies offer a premium brand of touring. We have ‘Select by Globus’, with upgraded levels of coach travel and deluxe hotels in city centres. If your client has the budget, why not sell to them? For customers who haven’t travelled overseas much, a holiday in the USA is always a good option, being English speaking and offering value for money and good service (and the exchange rate seems to be holding its own at the moment)…. You don’t have to go it alone We believe in the value of training and product knowledge. That’s why we’ve just launched our new Cosmos Tours and Cruises training module with Online Travel Training - the more you know about the American touring market the better for your customer and for you. Log on to OTT to learn more about our products and other operators in the market at www.onlinetraveltraining.co.uk Meanwhile, if you want to check anything, we are just an email or phone call away with our agency sales team here to help. medislands The Greek charm that is sure to appeal to all your clients' needs by PHOTIS LAMBRIANIDES, commercial director, Olympic Holidays
NCE A Grecophile, always a Grecophile, so they say. People who decide on a holiday in the Greek islands inevitably fall in love with the destination and return time and time again. Whether it's to one of the larger islands, where there's no shortage of things to see and do, or to a smaller island, to simply soak up the sun on a relaxing summer break, is down to personal preference. What is guaranteed is that all the Greek islands provide a warm welcome while meeting the accommodation needs of the discerning holidaymaker – two basic ingredients of any successful holiday.
O
The Greek islands The Greek islands – and neighbouring Cyprus, too – have enduring appeal for tourists, despite the fact that other newly emerging destinations have come up with attractive products themselves over the past couple of decades. The relationship between the British and the Greek islands is more of a love affair and goes back a long way – all of two centuries ago, Lord Byron was in Greece fighting against the Ottoman Empire in the Greek War of Independence. So why is Greece so special for an island holiday? There are many factors: the climate, the warm hospitality, the food, the scenery and the beaches, not to mention the country's fascinating history and contribution to modern political systems, architecture, science, medicine, mathematics and astronomy – the list is endless. Evidence of Greece's rich historical past is widespread, from the Minoan relics on Crete to the role of the islands in Homer's Odyssey. The Byzantine period that lasted for more than 1,000 years left its mark in the Christian churches, monasteries and culture that are the backbone of modern Greece and Cyprus. Greece's wealth of UNESCO World Heritage Sites include the Old Towns of Corfu and Rhodes and visitors of all ages enjoy the ambience of their narrow lanes with their many shops, restaurants and bars. Perceived by many as glittering diamonds scattered in the sea around mainland Greece, the islands have succeeded in keeping abreast of tourism requirements regarding infrastructure and hotel standards. The luxury five-star hotels of Crete and Rhodes, for example, are among the best resort hotels in the world, while the budget end of the market has seen significant

advances in self-catering, with well-equipped tourist villages holding strong appeal for families and couples alike. It's a huge departure from 30 years ago, when most Greek island accommodation was in family-owned apartments and small hotels. The all-inclusive offering In recent years we've also seen the evolution of the allinclusive, which though not an authentic Greek product has been embraced by the islands to meet growing demand from holidaymakers. All-inclusive properties have been responsible for introducing many families to Greece and its islands, offering everything from crèches to water parks and meeting the competition from other destinations head on. Another important trend is the advance of the youth market, now an economic force with its high spending power. Young people who would at one time have holidayed with their families are increasingly visiting the Greek islands with groups of friends and staying in young and lively resorts like Kavos in Corfu, Malia in Crete, Faliraki in Rhodes and Laganas in Zante. With price more relevant than ever nowadays, people see the Greek islands as offering outstanding value. Greece's battle to overcome its euro-zone problems have had little effect on the islands and their holiday product remains as good as ever. The Greek islands are unique in so many ways and I don't think their traditional character will ever disappear. While properties are being adapted and renovated with modern facilities, they aren't losing their sense of the past. The Cypriot charm Cyprus is also enhancing its appeal through its agro-tourism programme, which restores and modernises old properties in rural villages to create attractive holiday homes in the heart of real communities. This is a scheme that both retains the country’s heritage and adds a new dimension to the island’s stock of visitor accommodation. In general, the islands of the eastern Mediterranean are making every effort to maintain tourism as the region's number one industry. Visitors are welcomed and their presence valued as contributing strongly to the islands' economies. ● Continues on next page

medislands Kos promotion from Mark Warner
CYPRIOT HOTELIERS recently got together to celebrate the increase in visitors to Cyprus this year. Year on year the UK has performed well with an increase of 2.5% in arrivals in 2010/11 and the UK accounts for 43% of all tourist arrivals to the island. Pictured from the left are Antonis Papakyriakou from the Palm Beach Hotel & Bungalows; Darren Eade UK sales director for Aphrodite Hills Resort; Lena Georgiou UK PR representative for St Raphael Resort Limassol; and Yannis Efthimiou from AGTA (Association of Greek-Cypriot Travel Agents). ● Continued from previous page
Meanwhile, travel agents should bear in mind there's a Greek island to meet every holiday need. While families and groups of young people will enjoy the busier aspects of larger islands like Corfu, Crete and Rhodes, couples looking for peace and quiet will like one of the smaller islands, such as Symi, Halki or Ios. For people who want to sample more than one island, two-centre holidays are
very easily arranged through our representatives on the islands. Seeing two or more islands adds yet another dimension to a memorable Greek holiday. And the choice with Olympic Holidays is even wider this year. We're offering 24 Greek islands in our Summer Sun 2012 programme, having introduced Samos, Lesvos and Thassos, while we've added Mykonos and Lefkada in our Smart Choice budget holiday brochure. ✦ For details visit www.olympicholidays.com

allinclusive All-inclusive market continues to grow for Olympic Holidays OLYMPIC HOLIDAYS is offering more allinclusive hotels in more destinations than before in its Summer Sun programme this year – nearly 250 properties in nine countries. The company's commercial director, Photis Lambrianides, said: "All-inclusive holidays are a highly affordable option from Spain to the Red Sea – a great value product and especially for the family market. "With the rise of all-inclusives, the future of the holiday package looks even more secure. As the ultimate holiday package, allinclusives continue to go from strength to strength. "For this summer we've expanded allinclusives across the board with the addition of Spain and overall strengthening of the product, especially in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and the Red Sea. And while people tend to link all-inclusive holidays with summer, having all your holiday requirements on-site and paying up front can prove just as attractive in winter." The operator offers 46 all-inclusive properties in Cyprus, 45 on Egypt's Red Sea Riviera and 36 in Turkey. Among the Greek islands, the operator offers 38 all-inclusives in Crete and 24 in Rhodes. Lambrianides said: "More than ever, people like the idea of paying for flights, hotels and pretty well all their other holiday costs up front. With the all-inclusives, we've seen a virtual rebirth of the package holiday.
At first, all-inclusives were mainly upmarket and long-haul, but within the past decade they've become an extremely affordable and highly popular short-haul option. "Many newly built hotels are now fully allinclusive, while a lot of those that have been around for a while are widening their offer to embrace the all-inclusive concept." Newly featured Spanish all-inclusives include the three-star Club Cala Romani Hotel in Majorca (seven nights from £265) and four-star Club Hotel Drago Park Hotel on Fuerteventura in the Canaries (seven nights from £399). The company's most popular properties include the Golden Odyssey in Rhodes; Hylatio Tourist Village and Makronissos Village Club in Cyprus; and the Club Pink Palace in Ovacik Hisaronu and Bahar Hotel in Fethiye, both in Turkey. The operator's strongest Red Sea sellers include the AA Amwaj Hotel & Resort and Royal Albatross Moderna Hotel, both in Sharm el Sheikh. As an example of prices, a seven-night allinclusive stay at the Makronissos Village Club in Agia Napa, Cyprus, costs £459 per person (£325 for children), sharing an apartment. HAYES & Jarvis has set out to explain exactly what is on offer at all 79 resorts featuring in its new Worldwide All Inclusive 2012/13 brochure by taking the small print and making it big. The 92-page brochure makes the ‘what’s included’ section of the package offer into the focal point on the page for each of the 79 resorts featured across 18 destinations worldwide. The operator's programme director, Lesley Rollo, said: “With growing demand for all-inclusive packages, there has been speculation about how inclusive these types of holiday actually are as well as criticism that holidaymakers have had to pay out for extras that they had not anticipated. "Although this has mainly been levelled at budget resorts where allinclusive meal choice is restricted to one buffet restaurant and international drink brands costs extra, there is a danger that the whole sector will get a bad reputation. “That is why we are spelling out to our clients exactly what forms part of the all-inclusive deal at all the hotels we feature with a definitive guide to the choice of food, drinks and activities that are included for each resort. This will enable clients to make an informed decision and ensures that they will not have any nasty surprises when they arrive in their resort.” In a new move, the operator has classified 11 resorts – six Sandals and Beaches resorts in the Caribbean, four on Mauritius (Legends, Tamassa, Long Beach and Heritage Awali) and one in the Maldives (Lily Beach) – as Premium All Inclusive, where “clients can expect pretty much everything to be included,” according to Rollo. She said: “Take the four-star plus Heritage Awali on Mauritius as an example. Part of the growing Domaine Bel Ombre on the south coast of Mauritius, there is no buffet-only dining experience at this resort. Instead holidaymakers have a choice of 11 restaurants across the whole domaine and can use the new ‘C Beach Club’.
