Saint Lucia has reported a 7.4% growth in UK arrivals for the first 8 months of 2012 and we expect the trend to continue. This is down to the efforts of the trade. It is a fitting way to begin our preparations for the 20th Saint Lucia Awards which will be held on 21st March 2013 in London, celebrating a relationship which has spanned over two decades. Travel agents and tour operator reservations staff are at the core of our success and we want to increase our support to you. Only those who have registered on our online training programme www.saintluciaexpert.com will be invited, and those who are logging their bookings will get preference. Young Brits vote Big Ben as top British landmark YOUNG BRITONS are traditionalists at heart who are keen to explore their country’s heritage according to findings from a new children’s tourism report. Hotel chain, Travelodge, polled 2,500 youngsters to attain their views on which British attractions they rate as the most iconic landmarks, and found that young Britons predominately chose historical sites above modern attractions with the 153-year old, world’s largest four-faced clock, Big Ben topping the poll. Second place was awarded to the 5,000 year old stone monument ‘Stonehenge’ and The Tower of London, home to the crown jewels which was built nearly a millennium ago, took third place in the top ten listing. Buckingham Palace reached fourth place while fifth place was awarded to Europe’s largest ferris wheel, The London Eye – marking the only modern day attraction to make the poll. The remainder of the listing was largely made up of landmarks built in
the 1800s or before. Further research findings revealed that following a patriotic summer including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and a summer of sport, a third of British youngsters said they believe it is important for them to explore their homeland. In response to this growing interest, more than a third of British kids have asked their parents if they can visit a museum or an art gallery during the half-term break, in comparison to one in five kids who requested a trip to a theme park. Shakila Ahmed, a Travelodge spokeswoman, said: “It’s fantastic news that young Britons are keen to preserve our heritage as nearly all of the attractions to make the children’s top ten list of iconic British landmarks have historical significance. This summer of patriotic fervour has certainly created an appetite for young Britons to discover what makes Great Britain so great."
Sunshine.co.uk poll reveals quarter of parents want to holiday without kids A NEW poll by www.sunshine.co.uk has revealed that a quarter of parents wish they could leave their kids at home whilst they holidayed abroad; with half also admitting to having taken advantage of kids' clubs and other means of keeping their children occupied on holiday, to give themselves some free time.
www.travelbulletin.co.uk
A total of 1,562 parents from the UK took part in the study, each with children aged 0-14, who had been away on a family holiday with their children in the past two years. When asked if they always took their children on holidays that they went on, 78% of those taking part said ‘yes’. However, when these parents
were asked if they would prefer to leave their kids at home when going on holiday abroad, 24% of those asked said ‘yes’. Reasons included holidaying with kids is not relaxing enough (35%); don’t get to do what I/we want with kids there (27%); cheaper to leave kids at home (21%); and kids don’t travel well (13%).

I Y’ALL. Ah’m jus back from a trip to Georgia
and I dun tell yous, ah had a mahty fahn time down there. Why we packed so much into that there week, ah hardly knows where to start. The first two nights we stayed down in Florida before heading off up the road apiece to Georgia. It be a raht easy drive, so yews might wanna tell folks planning a vacation that it be a great idea to combine them two states- they’ll be sure to thank’y for it. Our raut took uz to Cumberland, St Simon’s & Jekyll Islands, before reachin the South’s most charmin’ and historic city of Savannah. Ah wish ah coulda stayed a hol lot longer in Savannah-it sure is one of the purtiest towns you ever did see with so many mahty fawn ol’ houses and so easy for walkin aroun. We then headed on up to Atlanta passing through many historic towns along the way and even found tahm to make a stop at the ‘Whistlestop Café’ for some fried green to-mate-tos. Talkin’ about food, you sure won’t go hungry in Georgia but it sure ain’t no safe place to be a chickin. Them folks that luv fried chickin, why they’ll be like hogs in clover. But lemme tell yews they don’t take too kindly to them vegetarin folk down there. Ah didna know too much about Georgia before this here trip so ah was a mite surprised to find there were unspoilt islands running along the hol coastline with many fahn beaches. There sure is a lot to see and do in Georgia and we had a hol lotta fun. We went a horse ridin, bi-cycling, boat ridin and hiking. We also found tahm to go on a ghost walk in ol’ Savannah-“spooky” and to CocaCola World in Atlanta-“gassy”. Them folks down in Georgia were mahty friendly and sure made uz feel welcome. Ah tell y’all , ah can’t rahtly think of any folk that wouldna have a fine ol’ time down there in Georgia. Ah know we sure did. And just remember –ya can’t tell nobody nothing that ain’t ever been nowhere !

W-AITO-Go! by TED WAKE Deputy chairman, AITO Specialist Travel Agents and director, Kirker Holidays
Customer interaction – don’t forget the power of human beings! WAS fortunate enough to attend the recent ABTA Convention in Turkey. As ever, our hosts treated us to superb hospitality and the key topics under discussion were dissected afterwards in the bar with a high degree of enthusiasm. After a gap of more than five years since my last ABTA conference, it was good to be back amongst some familiar faces with more than 600 delegates who had elected to invest their time and money in this event. There is no question that this is one of the key conferences of the travel calendar and I was reminded that, even if I don’t go every year, I should make a point of attending at least every other year. I had an opportunity to contribute to the debate and fly the independents’ flag when I was included in a Q&A session with ABTA’s CEO Mark Tanzer. There was a wonderfully diverse range of perspectives, including plenty of information on what the ‘Big Boys’ have planned in the way of harnessing the latest technologies to seduce another million customers. Naturally, I was kept very busy taking notes in all the hitech presentations on optimising my Google algorithms, not to mention fine-tuning my tweets and maximising smart-phone penetration – call me old-fashioned, but the latter sounds like a nasty condition that is likely to keep my most discerning clients awake at night. Like all self-respecting AITO tour operators and agents, of course Kirker has a state-of-the-art Website – in fact we have just commissioned a new one which will have all the 21st century bells and whistles you could dream of. We also run email campaigns and use other media channels, but at the point when you have attracted the consumer’s attention, the similarity between our company’s philosophy and the ambitions of the larger on-line companies diverge. Our objective at this point is to develop a close relationship with the client by communicating directly with them via one of the highly trained human beings in our reservations team – and this involves talking on the telephone. Not perhaps the trendiest business plan for a start-up looking for venture capital cash, but the good news is that it still works brilliantly as a business model – especially if you are aiming at the top end of the market – and as long as your ambitions remain restricted to selling holidays to sophisticated, discerning human beings. Feedback from AITO Agent colleagues suggests that, whilst we are all using appropriate new technologies when the opportunity arises, the key to our ongoing success is

actually more about the way we interact with customers, whether it is face-to-face or over the telephone. Selling holidays using a telephone is the sort of old fashioned Luddite fantasy that seemed unlikely five years ago – however, with the help and support of like-minded independent AITO Agents, we are confident that discerning consumers will continue to favour dealing with intelligent experts. Meanwhile, as we nurse the customer through the goal posts using the very latest, highly trained, homo sapiens, our hi-tech counterparts employ their whizzy online travel agent Website technology to provide consumers with all the electronic reassurance they need before confirming the booking. You may think I have over-simplified the state of play, or used a little artistic licence to emphasise the highlights of the challenge – and of course you would be right. But the real point is that it doesn’t matter which end of the spectrum your business is focused on, as long as you stay focused and make sure that you stick to what you know. Following three days of intensive debate, my conclusion this year was that the current market is more polarised than ever before – with the mass-market OTAs delivering high volumes of very cheap, commodity holidays and, at the other end of the market, smaller but perfectly formed AITO operators creating carefully crafted tailor-made holidays that may not be cheap, but do offer outstanding overall value for money. Business may be challenging at the moment but, for those of us who are clearly differentiated, it doesn’t matter which end of the spectrum you choose, we have a bright future ahead – just make sure you are not caught in the middle ground. Now, I really must spend more time using my smart phone. As my friend Miranda says, it really is ‘such fun!’…but just be very careful about where you put it.

SPORT FORMS one of the key themes for the Cyprus Tourism Organisation at this year’s WTM; since hosting Team GB for the Athens Games in 2004 Cyprus has remained a regular training ground for British sportsmen and women due to its year-round temperate climate and facilities, which are suitable both for professionals and those who simply like to stay in shape on holiday. Continuing the nautical theme, experts will also be on hand to discuss the island’s diving offering, as four new dive sites get underway next year. This year’s show will also coincide with the opening of the Limassol Marina and the tourism organisation will also be offering the chance to sample wine from some of the island’s boutique wineries alongside typical Cypriot bites. Responsible tourism is increasingly on the agenda across the island. Updates on new and established projects – such as ‘Greener Beaches’, an initiative created with the Travel Foundation which uses local materials and craftsmen to make beach tourism more sustainable – will be available. ACH focuses on agent training & offers chance to win £100 shopping voucher AFFORDABLE CAR Hire’s Training Academy will be the company’s key focus at WTM when it will be offering travel agents the opportunity to become car hire experts and win £100 worth of Christmas shopping vouchers. The company says that agents who can talk confidently about the various motoring options available to holidaymakers have a better chance of selling car hire and boosting their bottom line. In recognition of the role training plays in improving customer service, the company is inviting agents to visit its stand (GV480) where they can complete the online course and be in with a chance of winning the festive shopping spree.
Agents completing the programme, which is recognised by the Accredited Travel Professional (ATP) scheme and ABTA, will also earn eight ATP points and receive a certificate and ‘I’m a Car Hire Expert’ badge. The company’s CEO Angela Day said: “We launched CARS to ensure that every hire booking made is a very simple and dynamic process. Agents benefit from an XML return time of just five seconds when they log the customer’s details and requirements into the system and it will show not only the prices, but the range of car hire suppliers for them to chose from. “An online live-chat facility can deal with any specific inquiries and with a
guaranteed response time of just 15 seconds, it has proven to be very popular among agents. The whole system, including our white label options, has been designed to make car hire easier to sell for the agents, by giving them and their client’s real choice and flexibility in the service.” The training academy has also produced downloadable “Nitty Gritty Guides” and “How to Book on our Website” leaflets to complement its online learning. The company also holds fortnightly webinars, which regularly attract up to 100 agents at a time. For more information see www.onlinetraveltraining.co.uk/affordabl ecarhire.aspx

Increase in average length of stay boosts guest nights by 14% in Dubai UK VISITOR figures released today by Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), show the number of guest nights for UK visitors in the emirate has increased by 14% in the first quarter of the year compared to 2011. This has been driven by a 20% increase in the average length of stay, with UK visitors now spending an average of four and a half days in the emirate compared with less than four days for the same period last year. The statistics show that apartments and four-star accommodation saw the
most dramatic surge in guest nights, with year-on-year increases of 37% and 23% respectively. Length of stay in apartments has increased by 75%, giving an average duration of more than ten nights. Whilst the figures underline the importance of the luxury sector in Dubai, with five-star accommodation still accounting for 56% of all hotel stays, visitors are increasingly choosing value for money options, making the most of the wide choice of affordable accommodation available in Dubai.
The significant increase in the use of apartments is being attributed to the appeal among families of both the affordable and flexible nature of that type of holiday accommodation. The DTCM's director UK & Ireland Ian Scott said: "We are delighted with the UK results to date and are confident that visitor numbers will continue with this positive start throughout the year. It’s great to see guests extending their stay in the emirate as visitors take advantage of the huge variety of activity Dubai has to offer. The rise in guests
choosing value for money accommodation is understandable and shows that visitors are becoming increasingly aware of the range of options available to them in the emirate.” So far this year the number of rooms in Dubai has jumped 4% to 75,171. The emirate is set to open a further 13,300 rooms throughout the year further emphasising Dubai as an increasingly popular tourist destination. For more information see www.uk.definitelydubai.com or visit stand ME400.

www.travelbulletin.co.uk
Meanwhile, the first phase of a major 15-year tourism project in Sharjah which aims to revitalise the emirate's heritage is on track for completion in 2015. Work is underway on The Heart of Sharjah project which seeks to reflect what Sharjah was like more than half a century ago. The Heart of Sharjah project, managed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority, is one of the largest tourism and heritage projects in the region and will restore and revamp the city's traditional areas to create a tourist and trade destination with contemporary artistic touches, while retaining the atmosphere of the 1950s. Scheduled for total completion in 2025, the project will feature diverse commercial, cultural and residential projects, including a boutique hotel, restaurants, retail shops, art galleries, traditional and contemporary markets, archaeological sites, museums, play areas and commercial offices.

Africa to lead debate in World Travel Market airline events programme AFRICA'S AIRLINE industry will be put under the spotlight at WTM as part of a wider series of discussions among aviation chiefs over the industry's future. The airline events programme will start on Tuesday November 6 with Airline - Out of Africa, a session looking at how the continent's airlines are taking on international airlines to secure a slice of this growing market. In the past many local airlines have complained they are missing out on the increasing passenger numbers Africa is generating. However, the emergence of strong African airlines is countering this issue, helped by the introduction of new generation aircrafts such as Boeing's 787 and the Airbus A350. The session, the first of three, will be chaired by John Strickland, who runs aviation consultancy JLS Consulting and has 30 years’ experience of the industry. The session will focus on both the opportunities in Africa for air travel and tourism development and the challenges it faces regarding infrastructure, regulation and the problem of distances flown in Africa.
Strickland will be joined by Ethiopian Airlines’ chief operating officer, Tewolde GebreMariam, who over a period of 27 years has worked his way up through the airline holding many positions overseas, giving him a view on Africa’s airline industry from both in and out of the continent. Other speakers on the panel include FastJet chief executive Ed Winter and Kenya Airways’ chief executive and group managing director, Titus Naikuni. The second event will take place on November 7, entitled Airline - Setting the Scene: The Big Challenges. Chaired again by Strickland, the discussion will focus on tough issues the industry faces, from rising taxation and oil prices to weakening demand and airport capacity. Guest speakers include Iberia director of corporate affairs, Manuel López Colmenarejo and Gatwick Airport CEO, Stuart Wingate. The programme will be rounded off by a third session looking at both the problems and potential to be found in the aviation industry. The talk, entitled Airline - The Big Talk, will take place on Thursday November 8.

WTMafrica Ethos launch new Zulu Route interactive Website ETHOS MARKETING has announced the development of a new interactive Website to encourage holidaymakers to take a trip to the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The site, at www.zuluroute.co.za, has been developed to help users explore and create a range of short or longer term holidays and offers information on culture, history, wildlife and some of the province’s best highlights. The site has also been developed to help agents sell the destination.
Selous Safari announces savings & free nights for 2013/14 SAFARI ENTHUSIASTS looking to discover one of Africa’s most remote regions should visit The Selous Safari Company, stand AF550, which is announcing significant savings and free nights with long stay and multi-camp bookings in 2013/14 at this year’s event. Also, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the company is offering 30% off selected trips booked by November 30 for travel between January 1 and March 15, 2013. The operator is also currently rebranding its flagship camp in the Selous Game Reserve to ‘Siwandu’. The change will bring the camp in line with the company’s other properties and will help customers pinpoint the camp’s location in Africa’s largest game reserve – an area the size of Switzerland. Siwandu, located close to the banks of Lake Nzerakera and Lake Siwandu, takes advantage of the hordes of wild animals that roam the plains in search of water. Rainbow Tours is offering ten nights for the price of nine on longer safari and beach adventure trips, with prices leading in at £3,870 per person. The offer is valid on selected dates next year and includes three nights on safari at Jongomero, three nights at Siwandu, plus a further four nights at Ras Kutani on a full-board basis. Also included are flights from Heathrow with BA, transfers, game viewing drives, walking safaris, boat safaris at Siwandu, park entrance fees and taxes and surcharges. For more information call 020-7666 1250 or visit www.rainbowtours.co.uk
KTB offers water refills in support of Just a Drop FOLLOWING THE success of last year’s online auction to raise funds for charity Just a Drop, the Kenya Tourist Board has developed a new incentive for this year’s show. Visitors now have the chance to purchase branded water bottles at the stand (AF250) for a small donation. All proceeds will go to the Just a Drop charity and those with water bottles can then receive free water refills at the stand throughout the show. The tourist board is also inviting agents to join them for Dawa hour on each day of the show from 17:00 – 18:00. For more information see www.justadrop.org
Free hotel night from The Blue Train THE BLUE Train has announced a new promotion where guests receive a free night at a luxury hotel, either before of after their trip, for the rest of this year and throughout 2013. In addition to the complimentary stay, guests will receive breakfast as well as transfers from the hotel and the station. Accommodation options include Hotel 131 on Herbert Baker in Pretoria and the five-star Taj Hotel in Cape Town. The offer is subject to availability and cannot be used on any discounted rate or combined with any other promotion. For more information visit stand AF547.
Rani Resorts announces new Mozambique packages and booking services for agents RANI RESORTS has announced new Bush and Beach, Diving and Fishing packages in Mozambique, as well as a new partnership with Costal Aviation, which offers shared charter flights from Dar es Salaam to Mocimboa da Praia in northern Mozambique three times a week. The new route offers the option for visitors to combine a safari in Tanzania’s remote Selous, staying at Serena’s Mivumo River Lodge or Selous Luxury Camp with a beach holiday in Mozambique’s Quirimbas, staying at either Rani Resorts’ Medjumbe Private Island or Matemo Island. Meanwhile, to assist agents with their Rani Island and/or Lugenda bookings, CFA transfers can now be booked directly with the reservations team by emailing reservations@raniresorts.com

The introduction of the transfers has been launched to create a more seamless service for agents when booking Indigo Bay Island Resort and Spa, Matemo Island, Medjumbe Private Island and Lugenda Wilderness Camp. The company has also implemented a new yield strategy at its resorts based on occupancy levels to ensure that agents are able to offer their clients the best available rate (BAR) at the time of enquiry/booking. Rates are updated every two weeks and the BAR calendar can be downloaded together with contracted rates, hotel information, fact sheets and images. For more information see www.ranipartners.com or visit stand AF610.

Calendar of events
October
May
Jounen Kweyol Events throughout October focus on Saint Lucia's fascinating mixed African and French creole heritage, and Kweyol, the French-based local patois spoken by over 90 per cent of Saint Lucians. The celebrations peak near the end of the month on Jounen Kweyol or Creole Day, when chosen communities lay on traditional creole cuisine, crafts such as pottery and basket weaving, music, dance and games.
Saint Lucia Jazz Every year since 1992, Saint Lucia has held a major international Jazz festival with events taking place across the island culminating in the main stage performances at Pigeon Island National Landmark. The music on offer includes R&B, Soul, Pop, Reggae and Soca, as well as Jazz. Household-name performers have included UB40, Rihanna and, in 2012, Diana Ross, Toni Braxton, The Gypsy Kings and Ziggy Marley. www.stluciajazz.org
June/July Carnival Saint Lucia's month-long, heady carnival season culminates in mid-July with steel band and soca monarch competitions, a carnival queen show and two days of intense street partying. www.luciancarnival.com
December Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) Each year, over 200 yachts join in the world's largest transoceanic sailing event, from Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia. The 2,700 nautical mile crossing takes two to three weeks, and ends in Rodney Bay Marina, where concerts and celebrations are held to welcome the sailors. www.worldcruising.com/arc
