STA Travel predicts UK youth travel will soar by 20% this year YOUTH TRAVEL specialist STA Travel is predicting an unprecedented boom in student travel this year as youth unemployment soars and the reality of university fees bite. Recent research estimates that 2.5million young people in the UK will be planning a gap year trip this year. However, STA puts this figure at nearer three million, largely due to a swathe of young people who have had to make changes to their plans, either due to thwarted university plans or ongoing struggles to find employment. The company's group managing director, John Constable, said: “For many young people, 2012 will be their ‘year of travel’ as they re-evaluate future plans. Young people have used travel to broaden their horizons for many years, however this avenue has become more formalised with many young people incorporating some sort of skill and CV-boosting activity while they’re away. “Never before has gap travel been so meticulously planned. Traditionally gap trips were a full 12 months, however for our customers last year the average trip length was 54 days, which indicates a leaning towards a series of shorter blasts of travel - or ‘snap gaps’. Usually these mini-gap trips are for a specific reason, such as to take part in a volunteer project, go to a festival or go on a language or skill course overseas.” The company says that it has seen the number of students heading overseas to work, study and take part in volunteer projects rise by more than one-third in the past 12 months, as they look to alternative means of bolstering their CV and skill-set in a bid to appeal to future employers.
Australia & the US are two most popular destinations for Brits according to new poll from Holiday Extras A NEW poll from Holiday Extras has found that the US and Australia are the two most popular destinations for Brits, despite their relatively high costs. According to the survey, 21% of people would most like to visit the US with a further 12% keen to explore Australia. But they will find themselves counting their pennies afterwards as new figures from the Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer has found Australia to be the most expensive holiday destination and the US not far behind, with popular tourist items costing almost four times more than in the cheapest holiday destination – Sri Lanka. A mere 1% of people surveyed by the company wanted to visit Bulgaria, making it the least popular holiday destination. However, figures show Bulgaria is one of the cheapest ● continues on next page

places to go on holiday; so ideal for those looking for a budget winter break. Some 5% of people said they would like to visit South America but they would need to choose their country carefully if they are watching the budget as holidaying in Brazil would cost nearly double that of the more southerly Argentina. Seamus McCauley, the company's editor in chief, said: “It appears that holiday travellers would prefer to follow their dreams rather than look at financial practicalities. Long-haul travel seems to be most desirable for our customers at present with almost half preferring far flung destinations – it must be the dreary European winter."

newsbulletin New Seoul service from Korean Air
Notes from . . . n o t n a m r o N ust correct something I got wrong in my last column regarding TUI not playing fair with their costings on their website. I said their own shops were in the same boat as us but no, they are able to match the website prices and get the benefit of low deposit of £75 whereas for the rest of us it is £175! Saw some fantastic brochures this week; more like classy magazines – Inntravel; the Slow Holiday people have brochures including Walking & More – Europe and beyond; Cycling & More – idyllic journeys on two wheels; Villas, Cottages & More – active and relaxed holidays in beautiful scenery; and Skiing and much more. They are based in York and if you want to have a look at them go on www.inntravel.co.uk - you won’t be disappointed. Our next Yorks ABTA Meeting is on Wed 7th March at Cedar Court Hotel Wakefield. Leeds Bradford Airport are sponsoring it and also Mark Tanzar and Simon Bunce will be coming up from ABTA to update us so do please try and attend – let me know at sandra@sandytravel.co.uk Talking about Leeds Bradford Airport, have you seen Balkan have a new direct flight every Friday to Bourgas? They have low deposits of £70 which is great and also a 5% loyalty discount - can’t get much better than that so get booking them and support both LBA and Balkan. The Yorks ABTA Ball is on Thursday, the 12th July this year so put it in your diary – usual place at Cedar Court Hotel, Ainley Top, M62 Huddersfield and we are going with the Oscar theme again! I am not going to even mention cruising – I have been telling my customers they are in more danger driving a car! So let’s keep it in perspective - over 4,000 people got off safely which is fantastic. ‘Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen’ and ‘Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second rate version of somebody else’.

newsbulletin SKÅL THE VER WORLD O Members of Skål - the International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals - share their travel experiences and success stories from around the globe. This month vice president, Karine Coulanges, explains how Young Skål is attracting a new generation of professionals. 1 What is young Skål? Young Skål is a category of Skål International specially for students and young professionals directly related to the travel and tourism industry. 2. Who is eligible for membership? Young Skål is open to all young professionals training for or working in the industry who are at least 20 years old and not older than 29 and who have been in the industry for a minimum of two years. 3. Why should Clubs recruit Young Skål members? The idea behind Young Skål is to ensure that Clubs attract new and young professionals training for or working in the industry who, when qualified, will automatically graduate to Active membership, thus ensuring a continuous supply of new members. 4. How much does it cost? The international fee for Young Skål membership is 10 Euros and the Club annual membership does not normally exceed 50 Euros. 5. In which industries and training organisations must Young Skål members be employed or be currently undertaking study? Applicants for Young Skål membership should be training in a recognised university or travel school or working in one of the approved classifications as set out in the Skål International By-laws. 6. Can Young Skål members take an executive role in their local Club? Skål Clubs are encouraged to co-opt at least one Young Skål member in their Club to the Committee of the Club so that the Young Skål members are aware of the workings of the Club and are able to pass on information to other Young Skål members. 7. What are the benefits for a Young Skål member? or a number of years now, a holiday in the UK has been seen as the poorer relation to the annual summer two-week, fly-and-flop break overseas. Many people, particularly families, have been reluctant to plan their main holiday in the UK, citing the unreliable British weather as one of the main reasons why they choose the Costa Blanca over Cornwall every year. But the tides are starting to turn as the UK’s affordability factor – particularly when up against the rising cost of air travel – and diversity of holiday experiences are helping us to rekindle our love affair with the great British holiday park, whether that be for two weeks in the summer or short breaks over half-terms and Easter. And with the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee taking place this year, there has never been a better opportunity for travel agents to rise to the challenge and promote holidays in good old blighty – and be financially rewarded for all their hard work at the same time. So when a client comes into your agency with a limited budget in mind for their family holiday, why don’t you suggest they consider a holiday in the UK? Here are a number of tips to help you close that sale and earn a decent commission on the booking

Bargain Britain Budget-conscious Brits can holiday on a shoestring but enjoy all the trappings of an expensive getaway. There is an enormous variety of accommodation on offer, from the basic tent pitch – with some available for as little as £29 for seven nights’ camping for a family of four – to luxury lodges with all the mod cons. And that’s before we have even mentioned the glamping options: from yurts, tipis and bell tents to vintage caravans and treehouses, camping in the UK these days can come with all the comfort of a hotel but without the big bill at the end of the week. No travel traumas Forget the costly airport parking, the long check-in

queues and the lost luggage at the other end, a holiday in the UK takes the stress out of travelling – apart from the “Are we nearly there yet?” from the kids. A short journey in the car can open a world of experiences on our doorstep. It’s a dog’s life Many holiday parks allow guests to bring their dogs with them, which again makes a holiday in the UK more affordable as families won’t have to leave their pets at home. From coastal locations to lake-side retreats Holiday parks can be found at all different locations in the UK with each setting having its own unique selling point. Lake-side parks offer guests a wide variety of activities, from jet-skiing and water-skiing to pedaloes and fishing, while parks on the coast guarantee the traditional seaside holiday experience, which, let’s face it, are what all our childhood memories of great summers are made of. comes to providing evening entertainment for all the family. While many parks have X Factor finalists and stars from the ‘70s and ‘80s keeping the crowds happy during the summer months, some holiday villages have enlisted the help of stars from West End productions to put together their very own shows. Movies under the stars and festival-style entertainment in the shape of live bands on outdoor stages during the summer months are also helping to put parks
on the map with families, who may have presumed that holiday park entertainment was all about glamorous grannies and knobbly knees competitions. So remember, holidaying in the UK isn’t a downgrade from international travel, and if you are keen to increase your sales of UK holidays, the team at Away Resorts are keen to help you – and with 15% commission available, it’s certainly worth your while getting in touch. holidayparks Hoseasons launches new luxury family lodge product, Evermore A NEW luxury family lodge holiday concept has been unveiled for 2012 by Hoseasons. Called Evermore, the new concept offers six locations spread across England, Scotland and Wales, and is expected to attract new audiences to the holiday lodges sector, as well as offering the operator's existing customers something different. The product is designed to offer exclusive high quality secluded lodge accommodation with facilities such as hot tubs, i-pods, free Wi-fi and flat screen TVs, and was launched following extensive consumer research, which identified a gap in the market for top-quality lodge holidays in exclusive locations. The research revealed that UK holidaymakers perceive lodge holidays as being positioned between cottages and holiday parks – and that there was no company offering luxury, personalised accommodation combined with the reassurance of a trusted brand. The company's vice president for
lodges, parks, boating and apartments, Pali Badwal, said: “Quality time with the
family is the number one priority for this audience, but they also want to explore the local environment, rather than simply staying on the park for the duration of their holiday. “Space and privacy are also important concerns, together with things like a
gastropub close by and outdoor activities such as cycling and walking on the doorstep.” Stonerush Lakes Lodges near Fowey in Cornwall is one of the six Evermore locations, situated in a secluded Cornish valley surrounded by wildlife and nature. With the emphasis on contemporary family living, each lodge has been designed to enhance the location, with uninterrupted views over the countryside and floor-to-ceiling windows. The one- and two-bedroom lodges have private outdoor hot tubs, flat screen TVs, DVDs, i-Pod docking stations, a verandah with barbecue, Nintendo Wiis and a selection of traditional board games on hand. A short break at Stonerush for a family of four costs from £295, with a week leading in at £575. For more information visit www.hoseasons.co.uk/agents or call 0844-847 1144.

Accommodation boost in Rhodes, Kos & Santorini from Olympic Holidays OLYMPIC HOLIDAYS has expanded its Greece programme for summer, with new properties offered in many of the 24 Greek islands featured by the operator. The second edition Summer Sun brochure adds hotels of three- to five-stars and many self-catering apartments across the destination. Key islands for expansion are Rhodes, Kos and Santorini. In Rhodes, five-star additions in the popular resort of Ixia include the Atrium Platinum Hotel and Capsis Hotel. Two more five-star hotels are added in Kos – the Diamond Deluxe and Carad Beach – while new for Santorini are the four-star San Antonio and three-star Alesahne Beach and Thera Mare Boutique hotels. The operator's commercial director, Photis Lambrianides, said: "Although we've expanded into other Mediterranean countries of late, Greece remains our biggest destination by a large margin. "For summer 2012, we are seeing a booking pattern and level of sales for Greece similar to recent years, with more people leaving making their holiday arrangements until
much later. Faced with current budgetary constraints and longer-term economic uncertainty, clients are delaying booking until the last minute, but we are fairly satisfied with sales so far." Crete and Rhodes remain the strongest-selling islands for the operator and all-inclusive properties have been given increased prominence in the latest brochure, with nearly 100 ranging from three-star up to five-star. There are 38 featured in Crete and 24 in Rhodes. Lambrianides said: "All-inclusives are a vitally important part of our Greek product mix and are especially popular in Crete and Rhodes, larger islands where the capacity is greatest." australasia n o e s li a it p a c o t w Ho r o f d n a m e d d e s a e r c in New Zealand , UK manager, by HAYLEY BRYAN Kirra Holidays
EW ZEALAND continues to be one of the top destinations for people from the UK - particularly during our cold and wet winter months when the chance to bask in warm sunshine becomes more appealing by the day. Whilst New Zealand is around the same size as the UK, only four million people live there. They speak the same language as us, their weather is similar to ours, they are a sporting nation - and they even drive on the left hand side of the road, all of which help to make visitors feel at home as soon as they get there. Although the flight takes 24-hours, the journey to New Zealand can include a number of stopover destinations, with most airlines including at least one break at no extra cost, so it’s possible to include a holiday within a holiday. Small wonder then that every year thousands of visitors are drawn to New Zealand's snow-capped mountains; majestic fjords; bubbling mud pools; geothermal valleys; endless miles of golden sandy beaches; turquoise lakes and dramatic coastlines. New Zealand is made up of two main islands - the North Island and the South Island, with the smaller Stewart Island to the South - and every town and city has something unique to offer.
N
Tourism growth leads to new itineraries With tourism now New Zealand's largest industry, many regions are coming up with numerous new and exciting itineraries for both first time and repeat visitors to New Zealand to tempt visitors away from the more traditional routes. These include the Coramandel Peninsular; Stewart Island; the Catlins and Tongariro National Park. Holidays for all tastes In New Zealand, people are drawn to the outdoor lifestyle and there are endless opportunities to experience the numerous activities on offer. Specialist itineraries can be arranged to cater for an extremely wide variety of interests.

Escorted coach tours are ideal for those people who wish to let someone else do the driving and ensure that all the most popular attractions and activities are included. Self-drive holidays offer a comprehensive choice of accommodation ranging from farm stays, self-contained motels and hotels to unique bed-and-breakfasts and world class lodges – all of which are perfect for the independent traveller. For freedom and flexibility New Zealand is a motorhomer's dream, with wide open roads and very few large cities
Selling tips Ideally your clients need to spend at three to four weeks in New Zealand to get the best out of the country. However, for shorter trips of two weeks or less we recommend that they visit just one island. ● For shorter visits, recommend coach touring holidays which include all the ‘must see’ attractions. A wide range of flexible coach touring options are available. ● Recommend staying two nights in areas that are of specific interest to allow enough time to explore. ● Why not mix and match the type of holiday and accommodation? For example, your clients can take an all-inclusive coach tour on one island and a self-drive (car or motorhome) holiday on another. ● Although December to February is New Zealand's summer months, the shoulder season months of November, March and early April can offer fantastic weather but without the crowds. Other benefits include cheaper prices for flights, accommodation and transport. ● For the busy holiday period between November and April, recommend pre-booking entire itineraries. Many of the excursions and adventures are extremely popular so, to avoid disappointment, it is best not to leave it to chance.✦ ●

Australian travellers are becoming more independent according to Austravel AUSTRALIAN TRAVELLERS are becoming more independent according to Austravel, which reports a sharp rise in self drives and motorhome hire as traditional holidaymakers look for more adventure and flexibility. The operator says that the growth has seen a rise of more than 20% in travellers choosing to take the independent approach. The company’s managing director, Joel Saunders, said: “So much has been the growth that we have introduced more independent travel options across our programme. We’ve seen a real mix of customers, from those just wanting our most popular four-berth motorhome to those desiring a little more luxury - whilst still having the independence. The new luxury, eco-friendly Kea motorhomes were introduced this year as well as the iconic Spaceships – a uniquely designed vehicle that drives like a car, but has the features of a campervan. “We have all seen the requirements of the typical British holidaymaker change over the last few years and we’ve all had to re-look at what we offer to meet these demands. Motorhomes offer the ultimate holiday option in this market,

particularly within the diversity of Australia and are becoming extremely popular. “New South Wales and Queensland, by far account for a large proportion of our holidays consuming 70% of sales, equally split. However South and Western Australia have been increasing gradually over recent years, attributed to areas like the Kimberley’s that have now seen greater access. “A tip for success in 2012 has already seen Gold Coast sales explode in January with growth up 230% compared to last year. Wildlife is abundant in this area and new tours were added as an increase for those wanting to see unique Australian wildlife such as the Dugongs has been seen. Similarly the less known Kangaroo Island has seen an enormous growth of more than 300%.” According to the operator, the Cook Islands and Fiji are also expected to do well this year as stopover destinations, where a 30% rise in numbers has been seen and additional hotels have been added to the programme to meet the demand. IN A move which sees it target the lucrative youth/budget traveller market for the first time, Gold Medal has partnered with YHA Australia to offer independent agents access to a range of high quality budget accommodation in Australia. cruising The rise and rise of river cruising by NEIL BARCLAY, head of sales, Viking River Cruises F ALL the sectors in the travel industry, few are enjoying such huge growth as river cruising. Last year was a massive one for river cruise companies and their agents, and this year looks set to be even bigger, with demand outstripping supply on key itineraries. With more and more players coming into the market, consumers are turning to those who deliver on destination and quality, new ships. Price is important but not the major incentive. Good value, however, is. If you’re not already familiar with the many benefits of selling river cruising, it’s time you jumped on board.
O
Why is river cruising becoming so popular? A river cruise is a great way to see a lot of different places – in a relaxed and easy fashion - and unpack just once. Unlike an ocean cruise, a river cruise sails right into the heart of each destination and guests enjoy step ashore access with no long queues to disembark. No long days at sea, and no wave motion (so no sea-sickness) are also big advantages. Today’s river cruise ships incorporate luxurious, state-of-the-art design and engineering, and provide the ultimate in comfort and style. As well as offering a more relaxed travel experience, guests enjoy a casual dress code, with no dinner jacket required and an open seating restaurant, so they can choose to sit where they like, whilst dining on the finest on board cuisine. Who takes a river cruise? Anyone and everyone is a potential river cruise customer. Many river cruise passengers have taken land-based rail or coach tours and are looking for a more comfortable way to explore the world’s great cities, towns and countryside. River cruising is also attracting ocean cruise passengers who are fed up with the all-singing, all-dancing mega ships on which they have to queue for everything. Carrying between 120 and 260 passengers, a river cruise offers a more relaxed and personal experience. Most river cruise companies don’t allow children on board; the age range is varied but it’s usually 50 plus and comprises of couples or friends travelling together, and inter-generational (mother and daughter etc). Singles are also welcome. Introducing the new Viking Longships May sees the launch of four new Viking Longships, with more planned for the future. These revolutionary new
www.travelbulletin.co.uk
ships feature spacious Veranda Staterooms, French Balcony Staterooms with floor to ceiling sliding glass doors, Veranda Suites and two Explorer Suites that offer 270° views at the aft of the ship. Dining alfresco, surrounded by beautiful scenery on the Aquavit Terrace is another big draw of the new Viking Longships and Staterooms are selling fast. More inspiring itineraries, more exciting destinations Budapest, St. Petersburg, Cologne, Vienna, Amsterdam, Prague – so many of the world’s great cities were built on the river, so that they were accessible. On a river cruise, guests can enjoy spending more time enjoying the history and culture of each place and less time travelling. The Rhine, the Elbe, the Danube, the Douro, Volga, the Yangtze, the Mekong – guests are treated to a new and different view from the river and, unlike an ocean cruise, the view is constantly changing. As well as daily shore excursions, many companies now offer interactive workshops and lectures. Advantages of selling river cruises Fast growing in popularity, there’s never been a better time to sell river cruising. Earnings from commission are high and there’s no reason to discount – customers look for advice and knowledge rather than big savings. River cruising is a great value product, with just about everything included in the price. Sales tips • With just about everything included, it’s important to tell your customers that they’ll have minimal financial outlay once on board. As an example, the price of a Viking river cruise includes flights, transfers, meals, wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch, dinner and daily excursions. Tips are discretionary. • If your clients have never river cruised, simply ask the question: "Have you thought about a river cruise?" They can enjoy seeing several countries on one trip, in relaxed and comfortable surroundings. From stunning European cities like Vienna and Budapest, or combining fascinating places like Moscow and St. Petersburg, they can enjoy a wealth of culture, history and magnificent, ever-changing scenery along the way. Why wouldn’t you choose a river cruise? ✦
