WTM conference analyses industry's long-term prospects THE TRAVEL and tourism industry’s longer term prospects are good, delegates were told at the recent WTM Vision Conference, which took place in Florence. Despite the global financial problems which continue to impact the industry, Euromonitor International Travel and Tourism analyst, Angelo Rossini, predicted that the next five years will be brighter and highlighted the growing middle classes in the emerging countries, which now have the money and the hunger to travel. He added tourists from developed countries would continue to travel but that they would just look for cheaper alternatives. He said: “The long-term prospects are good for the travel and tourism industry. It is very hard for people to give up travelling, so they will look for cheaper options such as short breaks or low cost holidays.” Meanwhile, the industry’s technology was criticised for being behind the times at the conference. Amadeus Italia marketing director, Tommaso Vincenzetti, said that the technology the industry currently uses makes it seem outdated. He said: “Technology should bring advantages for us in our working lives as it does in our private lives. The industry works in a way which is way behind what people are used to.” The WTM Vision Conference series has expanded this year, taking the number of events to five. The Florence event was the final in the series which has also travelled to Moscow, London, Dubai and Shanghai.

Leger launches one-off battlefield tour LEGER HOLIDAYS has launched a one-off, exclusive tour which offers travellers access to a series of underground tunnels from the First World War for the first time. The British Tunnelling Campaign of the Great War remained an official secret until 1962, when it was revealed that British and French soldiers carved tunnels to lay explosives which could damage the German defences above. It was dangerous work, both from the risk of collapse and explosions, but also because the Germans had their own series of tunnels, leading to fierce battles fought 100-feet below the surface of the ground. On the company's ‘Underground War’ tour, which departs on September 21, passengers will have the opportunity to walk through tunnels below the battlefields of The Somme which are being reopened for the first time in almost a century and are currently closed to the general public. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet the people involved in the excavation of the lost labyrinth of tunnels running below the village of La Boisselle, and will be able to take a one-off guided tour through the tunnels, giving them the opportunity to discover firsthand more about their purpose and the lives of those who served in them. Prices lead in at £259 per person including three nights’ breakfast accommodation, travel by executive coach; free local joining points; a specialist battlefield guide; and all battlefield visits and excursions. For more information visit http://battlefields.leger.co.uk or call 0844-504 6250.

k c a b d e e f fam At Travel Bulletin’s inaugural networking Southern & East Africa showcase event, travel agent Yaksha Varia won a Tourism KwaZulu-Natal fam place in the free prize draw. Here she shares some of her experiences from the trip... African Wanderer (with Philip & Tommy)

Umkhumbi Lodge

On arrival at Durban airport we were welcomed by Philip and Tommy who took us to have lunch and refreshments. Philip was not only the driver but also a very friendly, intelligent, and extremely knowledgeable guide. Tommy was a man with many abilities. Not only does he manage the Amangwane Lodge but is also an expert chef, life guard, an inspiring teacher (he taught me how to snorkel), tour guide with immense knowledge and experience. I was touched by the fact that he went the extra mile to make my own vegetarian meals with pride. I even managed to learn new dishes from him and have cooked them since. I name them Tommy’s recipes. Protea Shakaland A two-hour drive from Durban and we arrived at Protea Shakaland where we watched a short film on Shakaland and King Zulu. Everyone was friendly and it was lovely to see children playing and posing for photos. Some of us took part in the Zulu dancing and a few men tried out the spears and stick fighting activities.

Umkhumbi Lodge is a great location to venture to different activities and sightseeing. On site we walked more than an hour for night game with Philip and saw several creatures, which was fun as we were all together in the dark. St Lucia / Simangaliso Wetlands area I will be honest in saying that when I read the itinerary Kayaking on St Lucia Estuary. I just thought what distance I have to travel to row. Little did I know that I would be in same waters and meters away from a crocodiles and hippos. My heart was beating faster and faster, and I was rowing faster, I was scared for my life yet it was such a thrilling experience. We saw three hippos coming out of the water and it was an overwhelming experience. A visit to a crocodile centre was educational and the demonstration of how to catch a croc was incredible. Elephant Interaction I have never come so close to elephants in their natural habitat. We learnt about how they live and survive, with the guide giving us a detailed insight into an elephant’s welfare. We had the opportunity not only to feed them through their trunk but also through their mouth and feel their tongue - a rewarding experience!

savannah and was excited to be in an open air jeep. We saw lions, buffalos and elephants from a distance but it was great to see giraffes close up as they crossed the path in front of us. Princes Grant Golf Course We visited this 18-hole championship golf course set on beautiful grounds overlooking a private sandy beach. I would recommend this place to golfers considering it only cost around 285 rand for a round of golf, which is comparatively low for an exclusive standard of a golf course with so much adventure and exploration nearby. My highlights The whole trip was very well planned and we were well looked after. We did so much in just one week - the trip to KwaZulu-Natal was exceptional and exceeded my expectations. I will be shining when I promote it to my clients. Up till now KZN was not on my mind and honestly South Africa never came to mind. Now KZN will be on the top of my list as it has so much to offer - it is full of diversity and has wonderful people who are proud of their province.✦

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve I was impressed by the beautiful lush, green, hilly scenery and it was not what I expected. I had imagined it to be flat with a dry

Carnival Cruise Lines survey reveals travel agents are in positive mood BRITISH TRAVEL agents are feeling upbeat and optimistic, despite the double dip recession and fragile UK economy, according to a new survey from Carnival Cruise Lines. The nationwide poll found that 70% of agents are feeling confident about bookings this year and when asked how positive they were feeling about the industry, the majority of respondents rated their mood as more than six out of ten, with just 2% feeling very negative. The survey also showed that almost two thirds (61%) of agents hit their sales targets in quarter one. The findings are from the line's new Travel Agent Mood Index – a nationwide poll that aims to gauge the level of optimism in the UK travel trade. More than anything else, holidaymakers are looking for value for money (93%) – while cruises, all-inclusive breaks

14

and package holidays were found to be driving most bookings. This suggests that British travellers are keen to secure a fixed price including most expenses, making it easier to budget. The Mood Index also revealed that travel agents are more confident about booking cruises than any other holiday. Despite the challenges faced by the cruise industry so far this year, more than 65% of agents said they were feeling positive about taking bookings for cruises. Adolfo Perez, the company's managing director, said: “We’re encouraged by the feeling of optimism in the industry, and delighted the agents are so confident about booking cruises. While recent events have given the cruise industry a real challenge, we are really upbeat about the rest of the year, which will be boosted by the launch of our brand new ship, the Carnival Breeze, this month.”

g n i g a k c a p dynamic Summer of opportunity for agents selling London Sightseeing Pass THE LEISURE Pass Group is encouraging agents to make the most of London’s celebration-packed summer by cashing in on its lucrative attractions market. The company’s London Pass gives access to more than 55 top tourist favourites including St Paul’s Cathedral, ZSL London Zoo, the Churchill Museum & Cabinet War Rooms and The Tower of London. The company's sales manager, Peter Muttitt, said: “After a strong start to the year we have high hopes for a successful summer. We know agents across the UK are doing huge amounts of city-break business around the Jubilee and Games, but there is also a big opportunity for that June and July period in between. London has been smartened up, looks great and is really buzzing. With all eyes on the two big events this summer there isn’t a better time to see the city." “As well as offering agents great earning potential, the London Pass is a pretty easy sell to those on short breaks. It offers priority entrance at many of the featured attractions, which is going to be a great benefit this year. If retailers are selling London they have to be selling passes too.” As well as priority access to avoid queues, pass users receive a free guide book and more than 40 additional deals and discounts. For more information visit www.londonpass.com

HOLIDAY EXTRAS is offering deals at four-star airport Hiltons this summer, with rooms starting from £45 a night. The offer is available to clients planning a getaway before September 30, flying from Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester or Stansted. An overnight stay at the Hilton Manchester Airport, which is five minutes from the terminals, starts from as little as £45, or travellers who are planning to fly out of a London airport can book a night's stay from £51 at Stansted, £75 at the Gatwick Hilton and from £71 at the Heathrow Hiltons.

Superbreak adds new hotels on Costa Del Sol SUPERBREAK ADDS new hotels on Costa Del Sol Superbreak has added three new properties on the Costa Del Sol, which it says are ideal for agents to use when dynamically packaging trips to the area. All three are Pierre & Vacances' three-star properties – one in Benalmadana, one in Torremolinos and one in Estepona. All three properties lead in at £111 for the unit, based on four people staying four nights on a Monday arrival. Meanwhile, the company is encouraging agents to get the most out of the Olympics build-up period by focusing on London short break sales. The operator's average lead in time for bookings to London is four weeks and combined with value rates there are still opportunities for agents to drive bookings before the Olympics starts. The company's sales director, Jane Atkins, said: "We don't want agents to be confused about selling London this summer – there are still some great opportunities to be had. London is buzzing with activity and in the weeks running up to the Olympics this will only intensify. Agents need to remember that the Olympics are in fact only

for two weeks and there is a great selling period between now and the opening day on July 27. "Following the Jubilee celebrations the streets are awash with flags, the atmosphere is electric and I have no doubt the coming weeks will be one of the finest times to visit. I urge agents to communicate this to their customers via all channels such as direct mail, window displays, in-store communications and even calling customers or engaging with them social media to ensure they are doing everything to piggy back on the media attention London is receiving." The operator is highlighting a range of deals including a three-star break at the Sidney Hotel in Victoria from £65 per person per night between July 1-23; a War Horse Theatre Break from £138 per person, including one night's breakfast stay at the three-star President Hotel plus a top priced ticket to see War Horse on July 21, and a four-star break at the St George Hotel on Langham Place from £90 per person per night, including breakfast between July 5-19. dynamicpackaging Avis reveals surge in luxury motor hire NEW RESEARCH from Avis highlights that, in the wake of the recession, we are increasingly becoming a nation of fakers to ‘Keep up with the Joneses’ and make a winning first impression. The latest sales data for the company highlights a four-fold increase year-on-year of posh motor hires from its luxury Select Series range. Occasions Brits look to upgrade to a drive beyond their pay packet include attending a friend’s wedding (37%), going on a date (29%), attending a school reunion (28%), going for a job interview (26%), attending a party with an ‘ex’ on the guest list (19%) and meeting the in-laws (14%). More than a third (35%) admit the reason for hiring a luxurious car would be to give the impression they are doing well for themselves, to stand out from the crowd (18%) and to be taken more seriously (14%). Brits also agree that appearing to lead a lavish lifestyle gives a better first impression (29%), means people are nicer to you (27%) and assume you earn more money (27%). The company's managing director, Kaye Ceille, said: “Our research clearly shows that for Brits, first impressions really do count and when it comes to standing out from the crowd, having a flash set of wheels is the ultimate way to grab attention and get people talking. With this in mind, we’ve created profiles of our Select Series cars, whereby customers can understand what their choice of vehicle really says about them as a person and what reaction they can expect to receive from onlookers. We hope our customers will really reap the benefits from this additional insight and ensure they are picking the right motor for them.” As examples of prices, a BMW 5 Series costs from £113 per day, an Audi A4 costs from £63 and a Volvo XC90 leads in at £81. Prices from the Prestige range include a Mercedes E Class Cabriolet for £124 per day, a Porsche Cayenne from £188 and a Ferrari 458 Italia from £841. Affordable launches new initiatives to help agents drive new revenue opportunities AFFORDABLE CAR Hire has launched a range of initiatives and is investing in its “Complete Affordable Rental System” (CARS) to ensure that travel agency staff complete the full sales journey when planning clients’ holidays. Angela Day, the company's CEO, says she understands why the car hire option can easily be overlooked by travel agents by the time they have run through the range of individual planning requirements of the holiday including flights, hotels/resorts, transfers and any attraction tickets. She said: “We launched our new online booking website CARS to ensure that every hire booking made is a very simple and dynamic process. Agents benefit from an XML return time of just five seconds when they log the customer’s details and requirements into the system and it will show not only the prices, but the range of car hire suppliers for them to choose from.

“If there are any specific queries around the booking, there is a ‘livechat’ facility on the website which responds within 15 seconds. The whole system, including our white label options, has been designed to make car hire easier to sell for the agents, by giving them and their clients real choice and flexibility in the service.” To help agents maximise the car hire opportunity, the company's training academy offers online webinar sessions to build product knowledge and confidence and the operator has teamed up with ATP (Accredited Travel Professional) scheme in association with ABTA to deliver the training. Day said: “The experience customers have when collecting the rental car can make or break the holiday, so it’s important agents have the knowledge and insight to guide them through the process, particularly where dynamic packaging is involved."

Top Platinum, Platinum and Gold members of the airline's Matmid Frequent Flyer Club, as well as customers purchasing upgradeable tickets (according to class regulations), will be eligible for the special seats when reserving, at no extra cost. Elyezer Shkedy, the carrier's president and CEO, said: “We recognise our passengers' needs and expectation and do all we can to provide appropriate responses so as to offer the ultimate flying experience. The new service class expands the range of products offered by EL AL, thus providing quality, exclusive service to a variety of passengers. "We have set out sights on extremely high service standards to enable us to cope successfully with the competition and to preserve our status as the first and preferred choice of passengers flying to and from Israel.”
