Fred. Olsen offers £25 Capital Bond voucher to agents booking Xmas & New Year cruises
RESEARCH BY www.sunshine.co.uk has revealed the top ten most annoying inflight issues according to UK holidaymakers, with ‘noisy children’ the top irritation stated in the poll, closely followed by lack of leg room and poor quality food/choice of food. The company polled 1,648 UK-based adults who had been abroad on holiday in the past 12 months via a flight and asked the question ‘Which of the following scenarios annoy you the most during a flight, when going on holiday?’. Respondents were asked to select all that applied and the results included: Noisy children (88%), Lack of leg room (76%), Poor quality food/choice (52%), Not getting seated with co-travellers (49%), Passengers kicking backs of chairs (41), Loud fellow passengers (35%), Drunken fellow passengers (23%), Small toilets (17%), Rude inflight crew (11%) and No in-flight entertainment (9%). When asked if they enjoyed flying, 23% of those taking part said ‘yes’ and 35% claimed to be ‘indifferent’.

newsbulletin Superbreak findings reveal holiday buying behaviour changes to make most of the euro RECENT SURVEY research by Superbreak has found that British holidaymakers are more likely to book a European break over the coming months with 56% having changed, or planning to change, their behaviour as a result of the strengthening pound versus the euro. The survey also found that when it comes to counting the pennies, men appeared more savvy than women; 20% more men were aware of the stronger exchange rate with an additional 13% planning to change their behaviour as a result. Conversely, 10% more men pay for a holiday by credit card, with women opting to save up and pay by cash. On average, the survey found that it takes six-12 months to save for a week long holiday and between one and three months for a short break, except for pensioners, who lead the way in holiday spontaneity with more than a third of over-65s stating they could go on a short break without any notice at all. Culture is the biggest pull, closely followed by famous landmarks when choosing a short break destination, with 44% of respondents looking for places to see and visit. In contrast
to the priorities for a longer holiday, weather rated as the sixth most important factor when choosing to spend a few days away. The survey also found that the most popular destination for a European short break was Paris, with half of respondents choosing either the capital (27%) or Disneyland (23%). The operator's sales director Jane Atkins said: “With the current strength of the pound, there has never been a better time to go on a European short break and agents need to be shouting about this. The majority of customers are still looking to save up, rather than put on the credit card, but as prices lower, a short break can be taken with just a few months’ notice. “We are so lucky in the UK to have a host of destinations within just a few hours, with rail links making Europe really accessible, even for those not on the south coast. Interestingly, only 35% of Brits have travelled by Eurostar, despite it being 18 years old, although 47% said they would like to in the future.”

Ask Renato... Agony uncle, Renato Fantoni, solves a networking dilemma... After having worked in the High Street for 14 years I’ve recently become a home-based travel agent. Given that our annual conference is coming up and I also need to network with prospects, how do I go about presenting myself? Do I need a brand? Sharon - Middlesbrough Hi Sharon,
TO START let’s put the ‘brand’ thing to bed. A lot has been written around this concept. All it means is that you have thought about what you do and how you do it and that the way you come across reflects this process. End of. You’ll have to choose to what extent you wish to identify with the company behind you. Naturally all the due diligence stuff like handling money and only selling approved suppliers is (rightly) inflexible. However, you do have latitude as to how you portray yourself e.g. are you part of a large professional set-up or are you an independent expert who is the best in her field? There is no right or wrong here but you do need to contemplate which makes you feel most comfortable as this will affect your confidence when dealing face to face with new people. You asked about how to present yourself. I suppose you are thinking of what to wear –more of that later. Let’s now examine social networking. The facilities offered by Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, Word Press and whatever will appear in 2013 are amazing ways of adding to your self-portrait. By working with them you will begin to know yourself better. Because these media thrive on users writing with brevity you’ll soon find you are better at discussing what interests you. This in turn will inspire you to research subjects you have a passion for and in time, you will become even more expert in them. Social networking consumes both time and money but has become the marketing method of choice simply because people gravitate to these sites with the same verve as they delete both solicited and unsolicited emails and recycle paper mailings they have not even bothered to open. So, when you have decided how big or small you are and have become a self-knowing maven you are ready for launch. Before you leave home however, remember that a conference with your peers is different from meeting potential clients. At the company event you are among trusted friends and you’re only selling a smile and a listening ear. However, being among customers is altogether more difficult. You do it because you need to sell to and through them. And what will you wear? Actually, it doesn’t really matter. The purpose of selecting the right clothes and make up is to suggest competence and expertise. What you put on is secondary to the way you carry it.
If you have a question for Renato, email him at renato@hpshotels.net 10

Kenya to host 2013 Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference KENYA WILL host more than 500 tourism industry leaders from around the world at the Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference (ESTC), which will be hosted in Africa for the first time in September next year. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) will co-host the event with Ecotourism Kenya with a focus on solutions to advance sustainability goals for the tourism industry. For details see www.ecotourismconference.org Meanwhile, the destination reports that the UK continues to account for the largest number of international visitors to Kenya, with the most recent statistics showing a 15.6% share of the overall market. The number of UK tourists visiting Kenya reached more than 125,000 between January and August in both 2011 and 2012 with four of the eight months measured showing an increase in visitors in 2012 when compared to the 2011 figures. The Kenya Tourism Board UK & Ireland is working to
promote its niche products including golf, business travel, weddings and honeymoons, to widen Kenya’s appeal to the UK and Irish markets. The tourism board also aims to increase awareness of Kenya’s luxury accommodation and additional tourism offerings such as health and wellness, voluntourism, homestays and business travel, and is focusing promotional activity on the range of offerings available on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline. Acting director of marketing for the KTB Jacinta Nzioka Mbithi said: "We are currently working on an awareness campaign to open up new regions where we haven't had tourists before, This has been helped by new domestic carriers opening up new routes in smaller towns. "Our other commitment is to eco-tourism. Kenya offers tourism attractions that are natural rather than man-made, so conservation is on our agenda as a priority."

wtmreport Visit Brazil Travel Association launches Minas Gerais training module for agents THE VISIT Brazil Travel Association (VBRATA) has launched a new online brochure, online training for travel agents and has announced the state of Minas Gerais as Destination of the Year for 2012/13. With the next World Cup taking place in Brazil in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, VBRATA is committed to ensuring UK travel agents have the information, tools and expertise to sell the destination confidently with additional sales opportunities and options to explore regions outside of Rio de Janeiro and other main tourist haunts. Using the VBRATA Website and training on the Online Travel Training platform, modules are already completed for Brazil, and the states of Pernambuco and Minas Gerais. Minas Gerais, located in the south east of the country, offers a mix of culture, gastronomy, ecotourism and offers no less than 60% of Brazil’s national heritage, including three cities classified UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Ouro Preto, Diamantina and Congonhas. VBRATA’s partnership executive Chris Fuzinatto said: “Brazil has a once in a lifetime opportunity to maximise tourism in the lead up to, during and after the forthcoming World Cup and Olympics. We

Tunisia hits second wave of campaign THE TUNISIAN National Tourist Office (TNTO) is into the second wave of its tourism campaign for this year, highlighting the destination's five key pillars - beach holidays, the Sahara desert, archaeology & culture, golf and spa & thalassotherapy. The TNTO's UK director, Wahida Jaiet, said: "The main reason UK visitors travel to Tunisia is not necessarily the culture, the golf or the desert, but to experience the diverse range of resorts Tunisia offers. Brits are looking for an easygoing holiday with sun and good food, so this is something we will continue to promote, along with our niche products. "Next year we will be looking to highlight more of these niche products and promote Tunisia's efforts at developing new products for tourists. For example, within the next couple of years Tunisia will have four more golf courses." According to the TNTO, the UK market is proving to be very resilient, with a substantial increase of 51.9% from January to September this year compared with last year. Jaiet said: "It is perhaps more realistic to compare this year's figures with those we saw in 2010, our best year for UK visitors with 350,000 arrivals. By the end of this year we are aiming for between 320,000 and 330,000 UK arrivals and for 2013 we are aiming to repeat the visitor numbers we saw in 2010, if not overtake that figure. "What will help in achieving those goals is to continue working hard with the trade and we will do this through a variety of measures including roadshows, e-blast campaigns and fam trips."

training Sales: what’s your tally of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals this season? by PETER MARSH, Pete
r Marsh Associates
RE YOUR personal sales figures down? Do you feel that you are going through a lean patch? No getting on the podium? Perhaps it is time to review some of the sales basics.
A
Benefits – the driving force behind every purchase "People buy a product because it will do something for them or give them something" Take insurance for example; clients are not interested in buying an insurance policy. They are buying convenience, security, protection for the family or whatever. The client is interested in themselves and their needs - not you or the travel provider. ● Are you putting yourself in their shoes? ● Why are they buying? ● What’s important to them? ● What don’t they want? When the client will not decide – don’t switch off. Hesitation or indecision can mean that: ● Your client requires more information ● You have not explored their needs fully ● You have not emphasised benefits enough ● The client needs reassurance before making a decision You may find that the reason for hesitating is a real concern, or that it is an excuse, in which case further objections will crop up - as a means of stalling. Ask questions gently but don’t challenge the client. The tone of your voice is important. Suggest to the client that if you can overcome the stated problem or issue you can go ahead with the booking. You are less likely to get client hesitation or indecision in the first place if you do your groundwork correctly by: ● Asking questions/listening, ● Finding out likes and dislikes, ● Discovering previous holiday successes ● Fully establishing the criteria for choice Getting the decision You must "ask for the business". It isn't being pushy it's what you are there for! Try getting the decision as soon as you spot some buying signals or you feel that

the client is warming to a holiday suggestion. You won't get the booking unless you ask for it! Key questions for successful sales Tick the ones that you could see yourself using and try them on a client! Feel free to mix and match words and add your own questions of course. Looker or booker? ● Are you in a position to book today? ● Are you planning to book today? ● If that is available are you thinking of booking today? ● If we have space/availability on/at would you like me to book it for you? ● If space is there would you like to go ahead and book it today? ● Is this an enquiry or will you be booking today? ● Would you be interested in booking today if we can find something suitable for you? ● If I can find something to meet your budget would you like to go ahead today? Alternatives include: ● Why did you choose that particular holiday? ● What was it that made you choose that particular hotel? ● May I ask you why you decided on that particular hotel? (or date etc .....) ● What did you like about the hotel? ● What was it about the hotel that appealed to you? ● What other alternative might you be interested in? ● What would you like me to avoid? Hesitation ● What in particular are you unsure about? ● What, in particular are you concerned about? ● Is there anything about the hotel that you are unsure about? ● What else would you like to know about that particular hotel? ● What other information can I give you to help you make your mind up? ● continues on next page

New UK departures module from RCI & Celebrity WITH FIVE ships sailing from UK ports of call next year and more European itineraries, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises have launched a new training module designed to engage and educate agents on the many new options available to cruisers next summer. The module contains everything agents need to know about the new itineraries and the destinations they visit, and allows agents to explore and take part in fun interactive games relating to the new itineraries. It also features visual training sessions that include quizzes and videos to keep agents motivated and engaged. Michelle Russell, trade training manager for Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises, said: “Next year is the first time we’ve had five ships sailing from UK ports of call and this module provides agents with the perfect opportunity to brush up on all the new itineraries and first-time destinations our cruise line’s will visit next summer." What other information can I offer you to put your mind at ease? Is there anything else that you are uncertain/unhappy about? What other information do you think your partner/other members of the party might need? How do you think your partner/other members of the party will feel about this holiday?
Closing ● I can book it now for you if you wish? ● We have only got the one room left would you like to book it today? ● Can I confirm that for you? ● Would you like me to go ahead and make the booking for you? ● Would you like me to go ahead and finalise that for you? ● Shall I go ahead and make the booking for you? ● Shall we confirm that? The difference between a good and a mediocre sales person is that the top sales people (plus athletes and sportsmen and women) take time out to reflect on their performance figures, review their techniques and, most importantly, change and try a different approach if necessary. Doing the same old thing in the same old way will simply bring the same old results - don’t get caught up in a sales rut! ✦

uk&ireland How agents can capitalise on the success of the Olympics by ALLAN LAMBERT, head of retail sales, Bourne Leisure
HE LONDON 2012 games will leave us all with many abiding memories. The Games’ motto of inspiring a generation seems to have been superseded; leaving a whole nation inspired and also challenged the global audience to look at Great Britain through a different lens. At home the negative expectation of a games expected to be delivered over budget and only be accessible to a corporate audience was trumped by unmitigated success and thankfully cynics changed their chips and replaced with a typically British, we showed Dunkirk spirit.
T
Going for gold The opening ceremony set the tone, acknowledged our past and showcased a modern multicultural Britain. It was brave and many argued out of step with a nation which is often criticised with failing to be inclusive and failing to provide all communities with a sense of identity. But maybe just maybe (and I am an optimist), the celebratory events of the last 18 months saw the Olympic games as a fitting tipping point for British pride, building on the earlier celebrations of the Royal Wedding Jubilee, and acknowledging a diverse nation whose differences and diversity can make us great again. So the stage for London 2012 was set and the perfect ingredients of potential sporting excellence, cultural brilliance and architectural triumphs; all cocooned in uncharacteristic sunshine and an even warmer welcome from the British public. We added the electricity with sell-out crowds and a tribal obsession behind team GB (possibly with the exception of team Yorkshire). As we climbed the medal table - we all cheered until hands were red raw and throats were hoarse. Even the French and Australian media lauded London as the greatest games ever! But in amongst the fabulous sporting achievements, arguably the greatest team of the games were the 70,000 volunteers - the purple people. All of these heroes are deserving of all the plaudits and recognition they have received since the closing of the games. So what was so special about these purple people? They weren’t professional games makers shipped in by

the International Olympic Committee. They were people like you and me and they came from all corners of the UK, from all walks of life and from every age group. The best of British Without fail these volunteers demonstrated the very best in British hospitality. We proved that we can consistently deliver a warm welcome and a service experience to rival the very best. They had an exemplary attitude, a clear mission and had been exceptionally trained. Nothing was left to chance. The net result was a professional, committed and passionate team who amplified our enjoyment of the games which in turn contributed immeasurably to the games’ overall success. With so much to celebrate and be proud of, Visit England are correct to build on the tourism legacy. Just as the sporting governing bodies would like us to be more active and participate in sport either as a volunteer or competitor, we should take the time to explore and enjoy the great holidays on offer closer to home. This doesn't need to be as an alternative to overseas travel; both offer invaluable experiences which enrich our lives. For travel agents the UK still offers a significant earning opportunity and as a sector it continues to grow. Families in 2012 continued to search out value for money holidays as the current economic conditions put pressure on the household purse. So after hosting the greatest show on earth - arguably 2013 presents the perfect opportunity for High Street agents to raise the profile of UK holidays and capitalise on this lucrative market. A recent poll of 1,000 travel agents suggested that 68% thought that recent British events would have a positive impact on the customers when considering their families holiday in 2013. Advance bookings are strong. So whether a UK break is your customers’ main holiday or a short break, how are you and your team going to make the most of this opportunity? UK operators like ourselves are committed to supporting you and hopefully together we can achieve Olympic success. ✦

spain Get equipped to offer your clients a taste of the real Spain by PAUL BUNCE, head of market development, RIU Hotels & Resorts
T’S PROBABLY difficult to remember when Spain wasn’t somewhere where people chose to take their overseas holidays, and certainly over the last 50 years it has remained the country of choice for millions of British holidaymakers. We began operating in 1953 with one hotel in Playa de Palma, Mallorca and since then we have grown to become the 30th largest hotel chain in the world with 108 hotels in 16 countries. However, like many of the best known brands in the industry, Spain was the cradle and catalyst for the boom in overseas package tourism. From a personal point of view I remember very well my first holidays as a teenager to Lloret de Mar and Benidorm which gave me the “bug” to work in tourism, which I realised in 1988 by starting work for Thomson as a holiday rep in Alcudia in Mallorca. Eventually I ended up spending 11 very happy years working all over Spain in various roles including the Balearics and Canaries and am very happy that today I maintain a close relationship and affinity with the country through my current role with RIU.
I
The cream of the crop Over recent years there have been many new and exciting destinations appearing in tour operators' brochures enticing clients to try something different, however, for me personally I believe that Spain and her islands still offer an ideal combination of climate, activities, quality hotels and accessibility which are difficult to compete with. I can’t believe how much tourism and the related facilities and infrastructure have evolved to meet the demands of today’s ever demanding clientele and how well Spain caters for every single type of traveller, be it young singles, couples, families or older customers. I have been lucky enough recently to have visited all four Balearic Islands, each with a different character and charm and boasting numerous attractions to entice British holidaymakers to their shores. Of course everyone knows Mallorca but there’s so much more to it than the main resorts; you can hire a car and drive the rugged west coast road from Pollensa via Lluc, Deia and Valldemosa to the beautiful port of Andraitx. Go shopping in vibrant Palma or visit some of the upmarket resorts such as Cala D’Or or Porto Petro.
www.travelbulletin.co.uk
Menorca is a particular favourite of mine with the stunning harbour of Mahon as well as some of the best beaches in Spain and is the ideal destination for families. Ibiza is renowned for its club scene but also boasts some great beaches and Ibiza town at night is hard to compete with for its eclectic mix of hippy chic and fabulous restaurants. Formentera was a recent discovery for me and all I can say is go! The beaches are better than many in the Caribbean and it's only a 30-minute ferry ride from Ibiza, totally unspoilt and absolutely breathtaking. On the mainland Obviously Mainland Spain can’t be overlooked with great flight connections, short flight times and excellent tourist facilities. I particularly like the area around Malaga with favourites such as Nerja, Torremolinos and Benalmadena all offering Andalucian charm at very affordable prices and guaranteed year-round sunshine! For clients looking for something different I would recommend the area of Chiclana which can be reached very easily from Jerez via a new Gatwick flight from Thomson starting next summer. The ClubHotel Riu Chiclana is bound to become a firm favourite, particularly for families and boasts a wealth of facilities in beautiful surroundings and a great beach as well. Finally who can forget the appeal of the Canary Islands? Tenerife boasts the imposing Mount Teide, the traditional resort of Puerto de la Cruz as well as all the attractions of the south coast in the resorts of Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. Gran Canaria has the best sunshine record in Spain, it is great for winter breaks, particularly the resorts of Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles and Amadores but for a total change of scenery try recommending Puerto de Mogan or Fataga for a true taste of Canarian beauty. Lanzarote is famous for its “El Grifo” wine which is definitely a best buy as well as visits to the stunning beach at Papagayo and the pretty village of Playa Blanca from where you can take a ferry to Fuerteventura. Fuerteventura itself is quieter than the other islands but boasts the best beaches, especially around Corralejo and Jandia which are ideal for a sun filled break any time of the year. ✦

Spanish National Tourist Office launches Social News Hub featuring social channels & services THE SPANISH National Tourist Office has launched a cloud-hosted social media news platform which incorporates all existing and new social media channels in one place. The Social News Hub, which is the first of its kind for the UK travel industry, is connected to more than 323 social channels and offers services such as updated news content, downloadable copy and images, quotes, links, polls and video links. The tourist office hopes that the hub will become the ‘go to’ resource for users interested in communicating about travel to Spain, as well as Spanish culture and events. The newsroom will publish content provided by external contributors, from bloggers to established travel writers. Enrique Ruiz de Lera, director of the organisation, said: "The launch of the Social News Hub is part of our overall digital strategy. We wanted to host a platform which integrates all of our current digital and social media channels in just one place, as well as offering easy expansion for the future.” The platform can be accessed via either www.socialnewsroom.spain.info/en or the ‘Spain in UK’ Facebook page. It can also be found under the ‘Social News Hub’ tab on the official Spanish Tourist Office Website at www.spain.info/uk For more information or suggestions email spain@lotus-uk.co.uk, putting ‘Social News Hub’ in the subject line.
