A HEARTFELT THANK YOU...Titan staff were in for a surprise when they arrived at work recently and were greeted by an office decorated with balloons, banners and handmade cup cakes. The gesture, from management, was to thank staff for their hard work in achieving a record for the company’s biggest January sales in its 35-year history. The operator would like to thank the trade for their support in helping achieve this milestone and is offering agents the chance to win an iPad 2 every month when they make a booking on any product before May. Pictured from the left is the company's Lorraine Bazley, Alaina Harris, Kim Smith, Mat Hall, Joe Abbott, Ashley Rushman, Alison Brown, Gemma Pugh and James Anderson. Cloud computing offers industry lower costs & worldwide access to data Cloud computing offers travel companies a ‘double whammy’ of lower costs and access to data from anywhere in the world, visitors to the Travel Technology Show were told by Chris Kendregan from Commensus. He said that a key advantage of having a company’s data – such as the reservation system – stored in the cloud meant that relevant levels of information could be accessed by staff from any location on a PC, laptop, tablet or even mobile phone. The company, in partnership with Travel Systems Associates, has recently launched the industry’s first dedicated cloud service: The Travel Cloud. Kendregan said: “Cloud computing offers tremendous advantages to any industry which has a mobile workforce, and travel is a perfect example. “Different levels of staff have access to the specific information they need. All they have to do is to connect to the system in the cloud and they are right up to date with the latest data wherever they are. Once you add-in the efficiencies of using an integrated VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phone system you begin to get an idea of just how much time and money can be saved. “There are further savings to be made back at head office which does not have to face the upfront cost of capital expenditure on IT equipment.” The company offers the travel industry a number of hosted solutions to provide applications such as Microsoft Dynamic CRM, Microsoft SharePoint, and Virtual Desktops. These offer real flexibility by providing extra capacity when companies need it most, such as a new brochure launch or to cover any peak booking period.

Half of Brits say food is important when choosing a destination A NEW SURVEY by Intrepid Travel has found that for almost half of Britons, the local cuisine is an important factor when choosing their holiday destination. The poll, which was carried out for the small group travel specialist by YouGov, found that almost half of those who have been on holiday abroad (47%) think that the local cuisine is ‘very’ or ‘fairly important’ when choosing their holiday destination abroad. But although almost nine in ten with a favourite cuisine (87%) have eaten it in a restaurant, and eight in ten have cooked it at home, less then four in ten (38%) have eaten their favourite cuisine in ● Continues on next page

It was voted the most popular cuisine among 18 to 34 year-olds, while Indian cuisine is the top choice for 35 to 44 year-olds, while 45 and overs are more patriotic in their choice of meal and most likely to favour British food. newsbulletin Letter to the Editor

Newsbites

Dear Lauretta,

Following up from Steve Allerston’s comment about a complicated itinerary that got cancelled (Brainstorm Bulletin - February 10 issue), there is a simple answer. He should charge for putting the itinerary together. I charge a fee at Holiday Hut. As an example, last year I had a request for a trip that took in Canada, the US, Fiji and Hong Kong spread over six weeks and a budget of £15,000. I put all the desired requirements together, working over two weeks (on and off – the client made some changes). After I had presented the complete trip the client said that they had decided not to go. However I charged an upfront fee of £250, so I still got paid. As well as ensuring that I get paid for my professional service the fee also removes the tyre kickers.

John Guinn, Holiday Hut Tingrith, Beds Thanks for your comments John - I’m sure this idea will prove useful for other agents to know. If you have a question or advice for our brainstorm bulletin page please email lauretta.wright@travelbulletin.co.uk

The company is also offering reduced deposits from £266 per person. For more information visit www.carnivalcruise.co.uk or call 0845-351 0556.

Holiday Extras teams up with Gatwick Courtyard by Marriott HOLIDAY EXTRAS has agreed a new contract with one of Gatwick's most sought-after hotels, the Courtyard by Marriott. The two companies have been working together since the hotel opened in 2009, offering holidaymakers the chance to upgrade their room, pre-book a buffet breakfast or opt for Champagne on arrival when they make their booking. The operator's commercial revenue manager, Christian Warrell, said: "We're delighted to have secured this extended deal with the Courtyard by Marriott. It means our customers will continue to benefit from this well-priced, quality hotel which is within close proximity of the South terminal." Luggage service keen to work with trade LUGGAGE COLLECTION and delivery service, The Baggage Man, is keen to work with the trade and is offering agents 10% commission on any bookings made. The company's director, Stephen Dix, said: “We recognise the value of travel trade partnerships and we want to develop trade business in 2012. Our service is particularly attractive to 50 plus travellers as well as to those who have disabilities, as not having to worry about or manoeuvre luggage takes a lot of the anxiety out of travelling. It also appeals to young families who tend to travel with more cases and equipment.” Once a booking is confirmed, the customer is given a date and time for luggage collection and sent the transportation paperwork, which they need to complete and attach to their cases. The luggage is collected a few days before travel and delivered to a client’s hotel, cruise ship or holiday property in time for their arrival. On the return journey the cases arrive home a few days after the client returns. All items in a customer’s luggage are covered to a value of £10.00 per kilo. As an example, to transport a bag up to 22kg to nearby European cities such as Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne and Brussels, prices start from £116 return. For more information visit www.thebaggageman.com or call 0800-023 2094.

ad a bit of a mixed bag of enquiries in the last couple of weeks, each challenging in their own way but that's what I love about this job - it’s never boring. You just never know what you’re going to be asked for next and that’s what keeps my job so interesting. A Grand Prix weekend, return flights from Windhoek to San Francisco, a holiday to the Scilly Isles and a honeymoon to Bora Bora are just an example of the enquiries I’ve had recently. Occasionally I’m asked for a holiday to a destination I’ve never sold before and perhaps know little about and I find this a great opportunity to learn something new and increase my knowledge. It doesn’t matter how many years you work in travel, you pretty much learn something new every day. There’s never a dull moment. Knowing how popular and lucrative the weddings abroad market has become, I was intrigued to read that a UK travel company has just launched a cynical alternative, the "Divorce Abroad" package. Unhappy married couples are being offered the opportunity of a quickie divorce on a Caribbean holiday to the Dom Rep. The £4,500 package includes flights, accommodation and all the necessary paperwork. In the Dominican Republic, foreigners are able to get a quick divorce without any residency requirement, provided both parties have given consent. It seems that many American couples, including some well known celebrities, have been taking advantage of this quick and easy divorce opportunity for a number of years. But will this take off in Britain? I doubt it. However, with divorce on the increase and Brits never being short of an excuse to go on holiday, I could be proved wrong. If this type of package does takes off, I can't help but wonder if some couples will opt to take along family, friends and even their children. If so, it's a sobering thought that in the future we might get to see the "best man" role being replaced by "the other woman" (taking back the ring) and the "pageboy" giving way to the "toyboy”. Who knows? The travel company say there has been strong demand for the product since its launch on Valentine's Day (when else?) Who said romance was dead!

Each week, for five weeks, five finalists will be chosen based on the following criteria: Impact how will the person entering be affected by the win?; Creativity - how original is the idea?; Quality of submission - how much thought and effort went into the submission?; and sales growth potential: the ability of the entrant in their individual capacity to increase sales to South Africa. At the end of five weeks, a panel of judges will choose the winner and two runner-ups. February 24 2012

W-AITO-Go! by OLIVER BROAD

Why discerning travellers are still seeking accurate advice OU KNOW that things are changing when The Times features a leading article with the headline ‘TripAdvisor Tripped’. At long last, there it is in bright lights: Beware you cannot trust all the information on websites like this. For a number of years, for all agents and operators who take immense trouble to describe hotels and holidays accurately, it has been irritating to have to explain to anxious travellers that what they have read on TripAdvisor may not actually be an accurate reflection of what the experience is really like. Of course we accept that this particular website is unlikely to disappear from view (and it can, if used appropriately, be a useful tool for us all), but customers need to have a clear understanding of the limitations of unregulated comments made by other ‘travellers’- and this new revelation is a wonderful opportunity for those of us who take great pride in providing expert advice. In many ways, it is the poor quality and lack of accountability of TripAdvisor type websites that has enabled independent specialists like AITO members to thrive, as discerning travellers have learnt to be selective about who they can trust. The recent dent to TripAdvisor’s status has been achieved with the help of reputation management company, KwikChex, who have teamed up with a number of businesses that have been unfairly tainted by vindictive and unattributed comments made on consumer websites. It finally hit the headlines when TripAdvisor continued to insist that all the reviews that they posted were from so-called ‘real travellers’ - eventually the Advertising Standards Authority stepped in and has now banned the website from claiming or implying that all the reviews they post are genuine. Before I highlight why this new development is an excellent opportunity for all independent agents and operators, it is worth looking at the key issues. The problem involves three main groups of message posters: firstly, the axe-grinders: dissatisfied clients that relish the opportunity to raise negative feedback publicly rather than privately. Secondly, the jilted lovers: this group of message posters has probably never experienced the service provided – they simply have a personal grudge and their objective is to maximise the damage and angst they can inflict on a former lover by attacking their business interests (read all about the ‘simmering pot of lies’ written about the excellent ‘Good Life’ restaurant in Shrewsbury.) Thirdly, what I refer to as the PS group – professional slime. PS posters have become an entire industry where you can hire an agency to use their network of professional message posters to write false positive reviews about your company and fake negative reviews about your competitors. I understand that it is perfectly normal for hotels and restaurants to spend £10,000 annually on this activity.

So why does it matter and what can I do about it? It matters because in a very competitive market, we need all the help we can get – and we want it to be a level playing field. We want consumers to listen to our marketing messages and to believe what we are telling them. Most importantly, we want our customers to value the high quality of the advice and accuracy of the information we provide. And so, I am excited by the most recent press reports because it helps to underpin the core values that trade associations such as AITO are putting out all of the time - if you want expert advice you need to consult a specialist tour operator or travel agent. Smaller travel agents and tour operators cannot take on the corporate might of TripAdvisor or hire £10,000 worth of consultants to beat the Google Analytics algorithms, but we can attend the next AITO training day to listen to specialist speakers about key industry matters and that’s where I first heard about Kwikchex’s ambitions to take on TripAdvisor. AITO meetings are also a great place to meet like-minded independents to discuss key current issues and how best to resolve them. To conclude, should we now expect a stampede of clients rushing to our websites and shops for brilliant travel advice? Probably not – but you should anticipate more opportunities to sell to customers who are suffering from internet fatigue syndrome. These clients will demand accurate, authentic advice when planning their next holiday. And you never know, consumers might begin to realise that expert advice and guidance from independent agents and tour operators is well worth paying a small premium for - now wouldn't that be wonderful! P.S Have a look at www.aito.co.uk or call 020-8744 9280 for accurate advice about the Early Bird AITO Conference booking offer which expires on March 16. You won’t be disappointed in Madeira - June 14-16!

newsbulletin Toronto five times daily with Air Canada by TTA Worldchoice agents

TTA Worldchoice agent, Katy Savvides of Sabra Travel in Middlesex, offers her views on current industry topics. A HAPPY New Year to everyone. I know we are already

well into February but never mind. I wonder what 2012 has in store for us all? January seems to have got off to a fairly sluggish start and I’m sure we all have some crucial questions we would like a crystal ball for, such as how precisely are the changes to ATOL and flights plus going to affect us small independents? Will there be anyone who can explain clearly and concisely the rules? Will we benefit from the troubles of Thomas Cook or be dragged down by them? Will the booming cruise market be adversely affected by sinking of the Costa Concordia? Mind you, judging by the number of people who have come in to ask us if there are any deals on cruises it will surely be a great year! I think everyone who asked that question thinking it was funny thought they were the only one. London Airports has been in the news again with the prospect of a new airport in the Thames Estuary. Goodness knows how much that will cost. Since we already have airports surrounding London, Heathrow West, Gatwick South, Luton North and Stansted East, not to mention London City bang in the middle, I really don’t understand why they don’t approve an additional runway for Stansted and Heathrow when the infrastructure is already in place. Why start from scratch? Does Boris Johnson read Travel Bulletin do you think? I attended the ACE river cruise convention in Amsterdam in November and found it really useful. I was amazed at the standard of the ships, the cabins and the cuisine particularly UNI globe. I must admit I didn’t expect the standard of accommodation to be as high as the luxury end cruise ships, but it most certainly was and the attention to detail was impressive. Much as I enjoy ocean cruising I can certainly see the advantages of river cruising. Although there is nothing like the level of entertainment and activity enjoyed on a cruise ship it is so much more relaxing and the advantage of sailing right into the centre of town or city cannot be equalled. Going back to ATOL/flights plus - if anyone has a flash of clarity on the subject please write to Travel Bulletin and explain it for us all.

bermuda w e n ts n e ag e iv g s d n e tr g in rg e m E opportunities to promote the destination to clients rmuda by ANABELLE MARSHALL, Be ) Department of Tourism (BDOT

FTER A testing 2011, tour operators to Bermuda have reported a positive start for 2012, with most up yearon-year. As examples, specialist operator, Prestige Holidays, reports a 30% increase and Classic Collection is up 18% in Bermuda bookings from last year. Both operators produce a dedicated Bermuda brochure and the reservation staff have good knowledge of the hotels and destination. Other operators such as Cox and Kings and Complete Caribbean have included Bermuda in their programme for this year, while Kuoni is promoting the destination in several of its new retail High Street agencies this month. Meanwhile, luxury operators, Lusso and Elegant Resorts, continue to work closely with high end agencies promoting the destination.

A

Tourism plans for 2012 Bermuda will increase its visibility in the UK market to trade and consumers, with live radio broadcast from the island; plans for outdoor advertising on taxis, trains and buses; plus participation in a number of consumer events throughout the year. Clients may be researching holidays on the internet, however sales in the High Street are still on the increase, particularly for luxury bookings, where agents' knowledge and experience is key. The luxury market is still strong as the resilient British hold their annual holiday as high priority. Quintessentially British, Bermuda’s friendliness, sophistication and laid back elegance proves to be a popular choice for the discerning traveller, whether they are looking for culture, rest and relaxation or thrill-seeking activities. BDOT will also attend several agent road shows to ensure agents have the knowledge to sell Bermuda. Stay in style Accommodation in Bermuda ranges from five-star to boutique and family run hotels and typical Bermudian cottage colonies with a high level of service. Many hotels have currently added value offers and free nights, that when added to our

“Compliments of Bermuda” makes the destination very affordable and competitive. As examples, a $500 discount is available for every five nights booked until April 15, valid for travel up to May 31, while a saving of $1,000 is available on a ten-night stay. Emerging trends With an increase in twin-centre holidays and sales to New York from the UK reportedly up 35%, agents should recommend Bermuda as an ideal add-on to this city break. Ideas include working with a local dive or golf club to offer niche holidays to their members. Bermuda has seven PGA championship golf courses and with more than 400 historical wrecks in the surrounding reefs, the destination offers some of the best wreck diving. Where clients are time-pressured, there is a growing trend for two five-night breaks during the year, which Bermuda fits in perfectly, with only seven hours flying time direct with British Airways. Also more couples are expected to marry abroad this year due to pressures on budgets. Whilst the cost of a UK wedding increases, one in five couples will marry overseas, saving an average of £12,500 on a UK wedding. And as a British territory it couldn’t be easier to get married in Bermuda. Agent opportunities Agents can complete the Bermuda Specialist online training with Travel Uni and log your bookings to win prizes each month. Specialist operators such as Prestige and Classic Collection are offering M&S vouchers per Bermuda booking, while agents also have several opportunities to win a fam trip place in September to Bermuda. ✦

bermuda Top tips for selling Bermuda by Bermuda Tourism ●

At approximately seven hours on a direct flight from Gatwick with BA, Bermuda is closer than you think. Daily flights are in the summer and five times weekly from November to March. The flight departs around 15:00 and arrives just after 18:00, in time for a pre-dinner Dark & Stormy, Bermuda’s national drink.

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, less than two hours from the US, Bermuda is a perfect combination with New York for a beach and city break.

Bermuda is a year round sub-tropical destination with temperatures averaging 65-85 degrees and only two seasons – spring and summer (or as we like to call them Beach and Sizzle) from April to September and 'golf and spa' from October to March.

Famous for its stunning soft sandy pink beaches, Bermuda has countless beaches dotting the coastline, some with easy access to the surrounding reef, ideal for snorkelling. Bermuda is a safe and clean destination, covering 21sq.m. It is easy to explore by foot, public transport and ferry. Suggest to your clients that they hire a moped, go on a Segway tour around the historic Royal Naval Dockyards or hop on a ferry to see a different side of the island, which is ideal for young families, couples or thrill-seekers.

Bermuda is full of fascinating culture and history to explore as Britain’s oldest colony and home to the New World’s oldest Church.

Featuring more golf courses per square mile than anywhere else in the world, with courses designed by top golf architects such as Robert Trent Jones, makes Bermuda a golfer’s paradise.

The wreck dive capital of the world, the reefs are home to 400 shipwrecks, and the diving is suitable for both beginners and experienced divers.

Bermuda has a variety of accommodation to suit all tastes, from luxury resorts to intimate cottage colonies and charming boutique hotels.

Bermuda bookings under pressure from rival destinations INDEPENDENT TRAVEL agents are responding well to Classic Collection Holidays' recent investment in the promotion of Bermuda, according to the operator's deputy managing director, Matt Rice. The Sussex-based operator has redesigned its dedicated Bermuda brochure, added new hotel product for this year, introduced stopovers in Boston and has had a dedicated sales and marketing resource on the road promoting Bermuda to the trade. Rice said: "We are delighted and very grateful that independent agents are backing and selling our Bermuda product. This has been reflected in vastly improved year-on-year sales for the destination. "Bermuda is a unique destination with lots to offer including pristine beaches, world class hotels, sophisticated hospitality and charm, and it deserves to succeed on the British market. However, hoteliers and the tourist board would be wise not to underestimate the competition from other mid- and long-haul destinations in this market sector. In the current

climate of aggressive pricing, destinations such as the Caribbean and Dubai are perceived as offering better value for money, not only in the initial purchase, but also within the destination itself. "Promotional offers and reduced rates from hoteliers and subsidised offers from the tourist board are helping, but a campaign raising public awareness of Bermuda and aimed at addressing the perception that Bermuda is an expensive destination could prove particularly beneficial." New for this year the operator has introduced the Newstead Belmont Hills Golf Resort and Spa and Rosewood Tucker’s Point. Prices for five nights start from £1,411 and £1,472 per person respectively. Stopovers are featured in New York at The Mark Hotel, a landmark building on Madison Avenue, and at the Fairmont Copley Plaza or Fairmont Battery Wharf in Boston. Complimentary lounge passes are also offered on all Bermuda bookings. For more information call 0800-008 7288.

FAIRMONT HOTELS in Bermuda is offering guests every third night free at either The Fairmont Southampton or The Fairmont Hamilton Princess. Rates start at $249 per night at both hotels, available until March 31 at the Southampton and March 15 at Hamilton Princess. For details visit www.fairmont.com

How to maximise your clients' time in the US by offering the best deals and advice

EEN THERE, done that, bought the t-shirt - or so I thought. More than 300 transatlantic crossings later and some 40-plus years in US travel, there are still plenty of things for me to do when I visit North America. Attractions and tours are so important to travel agents; the commission earned can be the equivalent of an extra person on a package holiday. Agents should review the many attraction sites available to them and tell their customers that pre-planning their trips can save money and avoid unexpected bills in resort.

B

The capital of family entertainment Orlando takes first prize as the capital of family entertainment, and with so much to do it requires considerable planning. First time visitors are advised not to try to cover everything. Disney rules the roost with its four huge parks and to put it into perspective, Universal Studio's Harry Potter land fits into a Disney car park at least five times over, while Legoland is the new kid on the 'building' block, vastly popular with three-12 year olds. For Orlando we recommend families to choose a combo package on offer from the various UK attraction site operators - they save money and are designed to maximise the visits. I see no sense in buying a two-week holiday then buying a two-week Disney and a two-week Universal pass. Conversely, do not try to cover all the parks in a matter of days, it's not possible! If your clients plan to return to Orlando (90% of people do) advise them to save some attractions for next time. Clients can then fill in those spare days with shopping and smaller parks such as Gatorland or an airboat ride. Don't forget there's also Kennedy Space Centre, Silver Springs, Wet n Wild, Busch Gardens, Wonder Works, Ripley's, Balloon Rides, ATV off road drives, water skiing, parasailing, boat rides, mini golf, URA pilot flight instruction and lots more. Soon the Orlando 'eye' and Madame Tussauds will part be of the Orlando landscape. Phew, getting tired? Utilise the power of knowledge All across the USA there are attractions and tours. If it is your client's first time visit there is nothing better than a local city sightseeing tour by Gray Line or another operator. Agents should research the cities being visited to pick out potential attractions that would suit the needs of their clients. Why wait for the customer to discover it locally, lose that commission forever and be told upon his return, 'you never told me about that'!

www.travelbulletin.co.uk

Las Vegas of course is not far behind, plenty of adult entertainment and plenty to do if you leave the city. Of course everyone knows you can visit the Grand Canyon, by bus, plane, helicopter and by jeep (even by train from Flagstaff) with all varieties of itineraries to boot. There are half-day, full day and multi-day tours. There are tours to Death Valley, Red Rock Canyon, Zion and Bryce and Hoover dam. There's river rafting, kayaking, ballooning and again the list goes on, all in addition to the night life entertainment of Las Vegas with the shows and casinos and city attractions. For those with the budget, there is even a fighter pilot air combat experience and a top gun flight in a real fighter jet. Clients can saddle up and go horseback riding too with Cowboy Trail rides, a fantastic experience and a must according to one of our staff who just returned from Las Vegas. Go west Further west is San Francisco, one of my favourite cities and one I thought I knew so well after so many visits. Not so! I recently took a bicycle tour with Bike n Roll, mastered those giant city hills, albeit with motorised assistance. Quite an experience. I also took the Duck Tour, riding (and quacking) through the historic neighborhoods before splashing down into the Bay. It's great fun and even kids would not be bored. They have the Duck tour in Philadelphia and Seattle too, where the Christmas theme puts a new slant to christmas quackers! By the way, you can even tour the city by Fire Engine how cool is that? Also fun is the GO CAR, the world's first computerguided storytelling car. The clever talking car navigates for you, but that's not all. As you drive, it points out the sights and tells you the stories that bring San Francisco to life. Last but not least and a revelation to me, California Academy of Sciences – the only place on the planet with an aquarium, a planetarium, a natural history museum, and a four-storey rainforest all under one roof. It’s a stunning architectural achievement with hundreds of unique exhibits and nearly 40,000 live animals - and it costs around £20 - well worth it. Of course, San Francisco has its boat tours too, the sightseeing excursions with Red and White fleet or the dinner cruises with Hornblower yachts. I could write pages on just San Francisco alone. ● Continues on next page

The big apple Mentioning the SFO Academy and education brings to mind New York; again there are plenty of new and different things to do here, the Bike n Roll bicycle tours, Uncle Sam's walking tours, Harlem gospel tours and plenty of fantastic museums that cost absolutely nothing. New on offer are the boat tours with Manhattan by Sail, New York's only tall ship experience. There's also the Shark speedboat thrill ride and even the Water Taxis. All can be pre-booked and will earn valuable commission for agents. Search and research should be the travel agent motto. Look up the websites made available to you, they are full of information on what to sell to your customers. It would be hard to cover the entire USA and Canada in such a short article. Canada has its own attractions and tours, the spectacular Rocky Mountain rail trip, the boat excursions to Victoria, then there’s the Polar Bear tour out at Churchill, and whale watching tours on the St Lawrence in Quebec, this huge river boasting 12 species of whale! The list and fun in visiting the attractions is endless, so too the commission you can earn from pre-selling. I sold my first attraction tickets in the early 70's when Trailways bus pioneered travel to North America. The fun is still there! ✦

Our hand-picked selection of predominantly 4+ and 5+ hotels has been vetted personally by our team for quality, service, location and value.

We’re not just saying that: we were voted it in the 2011 British Travel Awards, plus a silver award for best small tour operator of the year. Try our award winning service for yourself.

Best value We only sell holidays to Egypt. That lets us build strong relationships which we can use to get the best deals for you; not just better prices, but better quality too. Our holidays also include more in the price, with free transfers, in-flight meals on many flights, and a generous luggage allowance as standard.

Best experiences In relaxing surroundings and with all inclusive service, it’s all too easy to forget about life beyond the pool. But Egypt can offer so much more. Our extensive range of excursions, cruises, tours, and cruise and stay holidays ensure you get to experience Egypt’s many treasures.
