Brits charged £186million for excess baggage WITH MORE than six million people expected to jet off on their summer holidays in the coming months, a new report from Kelkoo reveals that more than a quarter (27%) will exceed baggage limits and more than half of these (55%) will incur charges. These charges are expected to total almost £1million per day during the peak summer holiday season. In total, the report reveals that an estimated £37million worth of charges are expected to be collected by airlines in the main six week summer holiday season this year. The report focused on UK holidaymakers who travelled by plane in the last 24 months. Passengers were segregated according to carrier type (low-cost, charter or full service) to determine the number of people that exceeded their baggage limit. The report also examined industry data of the average number of bags checked in and the number of holidaymakers expected to fly this summer. Based on this data, this enabled the company to forecast the amount that will be spent on excess baggage this year. Last year a total of 3.8million people were charged an estimated £186million for excess baggage. When this charge is split by airline type, just under a third (37%) of travellers incurred charges on low cost airlines, 20% on chartered and 41% on full service airlines. However, due to the average cost per extra kilo on low cost airlines reaching £13.20 - almost double that of charter (£7.15) or full service/scheduled (£7.46), these carriers reaped 47% (£87million) of the total charges collected - a significant source of income. Airlines do not receive 100% of this fee as they have a pay an administration charge to the airport that collects it. Research also reveals that, on average, each UK holidaymaker who was charged for exceeding their weight allowance packed an average excess baggage of 3.5kilos, resulting in a cost of £48. This equates to 15% of the average overall cost of a return airfare (£318). Despite a lack of understanding and preparation amongst many consumers around baggage limits, nearly one in ten (8%) of those that had to pay claim they will not use the airline again. The company's CMO, Chris Simpson, said: "With the summer holidays around the corner, travellers should look to compare prices not just between low-cost and traditional airlines, but also between specific carriers as there are substantial savings to be made by shopping around. We’d also encourage all passengers to check their luggage allowance and weigh their bags before they fly, to ensure they are not hit with an unexpected extra cost once they get to the airport. With airlines charging as much as £20 per extra kilo, this can be an expensive oversight.”

HomeAway.co.uk Survey reveals Brits take cheese & baked beans on holiday SOME 12MILLION holidaymakers will head off to exotic climes next year - only to buy or cook traditional English meals, a new survey by HomeAway.co.uk has revealed. The study into the holiday habits of 2,000 adults found a quarter lack the confidence or knowledge to try local specialities when travelling abroad. It was also revealed that even those who go self-catering trawl supermarkets for familiar goods to take home and prepare, rather than try their hand at native dishes. One in five even go so far as to take their favourite foods on holiday with them packing baked beans, bacon and even cheese in their suitcase. And more than a quarter admitted that the tried and trusted beans on toast was often their lunch of choice abroad, even when faced with an array of local produce to choose from. The company's regional director, Andy Cockburn, said: ''It's a shame lots of people have a fear of trying foreign food as one of the key ways to enjoy and experience different cultures is through their cuisine. One of the benefits of a self-catering holiday home is that it allows you to do this. That doesn't mean

cooking for hours; local markets mostly have plenty of specialities you can just pop on a plate and enjoy." The research showed that the top excuses Brits gave for not trying the local cuisine were that they were scared to try new foods and worried that they would get an upset stomach. One in six said that on their holiday they should be able to eat whatever they want and didn't like being forced to eat food they weren't used to just because they were in a foreign country. Nearly a quarter only look for familiar brands and products when they shop overseas, and men were the main offenders with them more likely to not try any foreign food when abroad. The most popular dishes for Brits to eat when they are on holiday are pasta, full English breakfasts, cheese sandwiches and stir fries. The research also revealed that Vietnam was the destination where Brits were most likely to dislike the native food and hunt down English options. Japan and India also ranked highly in the list of countries where Brits struggled to enjoy the local cuisine with Morocco, Singapore and Thailand not far behind.

Sunvil Holidays purchases Planet Holidays SUNVIL HOLIDAYS has purchased Planet Holidays Limited, the wedding and luxury hotel operator. Noel Josephides, the managing director of Sunvil, said: “One of the growth areas in the travel industry has been the arrangement of weddings overseas. Until now, Sunvil has simply passed on to specialists the many enquiries it receives from clients wishing to tie the knot whilst on holiday because it didn’t have the right technical expertise to handle weddings. Planet was the first tour operator to recognise the potential of this market and still remains one of the true specialists in this field. The two companies are, I believe, a perfect match." Planet's founder director, Mathilde Robert, said: "We are very proud to
become part of one of the leading specialist tour operators in the UK. Sunvil operates in some very niche destinations around the world and we will thus gain access to flight seats and accommodation which will substantially enhance our wedding portfolio in addition to our traditional areas of Greece and Cyprus, where Sunvil has also long operated. We will also now venture into new areas of Portugal, including the Azores and Madeira, plus Italy, Sicily and Latin America, where Sunvil has considerable expertise and contacts.” The operator will continue to trade under its current name and management but will benefit from the experience available within the Sunvil group. Notes from . . . n o t n a m r o N UST BACK from the most wonderful trip with Constantinou Hotels. Annabel Griffin, who has Le Petit Monde representing luxury travel through bespoke sales and marketing, arranged the trip and it was one of the best trips I have been on. I was met at the airport by Andreas who has his own executive taxi company which Constantinou use and was given Champagne when I got in the taxi – a brilliant start! The 5* Asimina Suites Hotel in Paphos is wonderful and knows how to look after clients. You are met at reception and taken to a lovely lounge, offered a drink and some canapés whilst you are given your room key/info etc., I was in an Executive Suite with a private pool which was huge and I would recommend telling your clients it is worth the upgrade with a separate lounge, Jacuzzi bath, walk-in shower etc. A big THANK YOU to Aristos Diomedous who is the general manager of the hotel and a brilliant host. You can tell he is passionate about this wonderful hotel and Cyprus itself, taking us to a typical harbour seafood restaurant called Theo’s - well worth recommending. We also had a trip to the mountains to a village called Omodos (on the way stopping to watch the sunset and the hotel had arranged canapés and Champagne overlooking Aphrodite’s Rock). In Omodos we visited a lovely old church and a local winery for wine tasting, before sitting down for a meze with live music at the Stou Kir Yianni. Again, the food and atmosphere were wonderful. The Asimina Suites Hotel is adults-only and very relaxing and the food is fantastic. Dino, the hotel manager, and all the staff are friendly without being over the top. I have found a piece of paradise at this truly 5* luxury hotel and I can’t wait to go back - I will have no hesitation in recommending it to my clients. Companies like Classic, Cyplon, Elegant Resorts, Jet2, ITC Classics, Prestige, Olympic, Sunvil, Kuoni, TC and Tui all sell this wonderful hotel. Am going to try and persuade them to have a table at the Yorkshire Ball so fingers crossed! ‘When the world says give up, hope whispers ‘Try just once more’ and ‘Teamwork – together we achieve the extraordinary’.

Emma Yorke The national sales manager of Belleair Holidays likes to take her iPad 2 when travelling and is always the first person on the dancefloor
Who is your ideal travelling companion? My iPad 2 and a good selection of films. I like a bit of pure escapism on flights.
“Do what you love. Everything else just falls into place after that”
What's your earliest childhood memory? Meeting Santa Claus in House of Fraser – the ultimate traveller, covering the whole world in just one night! Where was your last work-related trip? The ABTA Travel Convention in Palma. It’s always a must-do event for me with a great mix of catching up with old friends and making new contacts. If you were a celebrity who would you choose to be and why? It would have to be Joanna Lumley! She’s elegant, well-travelled and ‘Absolutely Fabulous’. What three words would your friends use to describe you? Fussy – I’m a real perfectionist; Caring – I’m a mum, it comes with the territory; and fun – I’m always the first one on the dancefloor! What have your travels taught you? Pack light! What is the best advice you recall? Do what you love. Everything else just falls into place after that. If you could have a room full of any one thing, what would it be? Bubbles… preferably Cristal Champagne! If you could change three things in the industry, what would they be? Price wars, check-in at airports and customer indecisiveness… everyone should just go to Malta!

Stars in your eyes: let’s rock the vote!
HE 16TH annual Travel Bulletin Star Awards are back! And as the most respected event in the industry (being truly independent and open to all) it’s time to make your mark and decide which companies are worthy of your vote.
T
Voting is now open until Friday June 1 and there are a number of ways you can back your favourites – by filling in the voting form on page 33, by going online at www.travelbulletin.co.uk/awards or by completing the loose insert that you’ll find in every issue throughout May. www.travelbulletin.co.uk
This year the awards categories have been revised following your suggestions, and so there’s now an even greater choice – 32 in total that cover every aspect and sector of the travel industry. These are further divided into five industry sectors - Smooth Operators, Land Lords, High Fliers, Sea Captains and Best Supporting Acts. Within the Smooth Operators section, we have expanded the number of awards to represent different geographical areas such as Star Specialist Operator to Africa, The Americas, the Mediterranean etc.. Meanwhile, new awards for this year April 27 2012

Over the following pages you’ll discover why companies are relying on your vote and how you can make a big difference. As Paddy McGuiness, host of ITV1's Take Me Out would say, "The power is in your hands!" And it really is. Every single vote is counted so there's every chance your favourite companies will win an award. You’ll also find a pictorial record of last year’s glitzy awards evening, and if that’s not enough of an incentive to cast your vote, there are some fantastic prizes to be won, kindly donated by Jetset. This year’s Star Awards presentation evening takes place at the prestigious five-star Landmark Hotel in London on Monday September 10. Here's what some of our guests from last year's Star Awards event had to say... I had a great time at the Star Awards. First I got to meet old friends in the Gazebo - then I was guest of Classic Collection, who picked up the first award of the night - so we started on the Champagne! I loved the MC and his wicked sense of humour and I thought the Jersey Boys were fantastic!”
“ “
Charmaine Hallmark, Hallmark Travel, East Grinstead
I love the fact that the Star Awards are voted for by actual agents. It is not down to a panel of judges to decide who wins and who doesn't - so to me these awards are a true barometer of what is going on in our industry. We are delighted to have won and would just like to say thank you to everyone who voted for us! As for the evening itself the highlights for me were The Jersey Boys and driving faster than the speed of light in my lucky yellow ferrari!” Gail Dunwoodie, Attraction World
What a great recognition from our valued trade partners! Holiday Autos is very proud and delighted to have been chosen for this award. Collecting the awards on behalf of all my colleagues was of course the highlight of the evening, but I also enjoyed The Jersey Boys!”
“ “
Stephanie Hills, Holiday Autos
I have been in the travel industry for 35 years now and as you can imagine there have been plenty of functions during that time. I would rate Travel Bulletin’s Star Awards among the best of them. A fivestar venue, the meal and service was fantastic and the entertainment was first rate. I was bowled over when The Jersey Boys were introduced! Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable evening.” Paul Newman, Drifters Travel, London 18

Yes we can! AST YOUR minds back to November 2008 and this slogan was everywhere. Even the terminally disengaged could relate to what Barack Obama was getting at in his presidential campaign. People were sick and tired of what they saw as the same old kind of politics and the same old faces and names and wanted something different. On the fourth day of that month the Land of the Free returned the relative newbie, Obama, as the most popular president for 20 years.
C
Now regardless of politics and the success, or otherwise, of Obama those sentiments still resonate. They vibrated throughout the whole of last year in the Arab World and they still do in beleaguered Syria. Getting the opportunity to make change or to have your voice heard is one that we might take for granted in this country. It’s maybe the reason why only

around two thirds of us bother to vote in the general election. But voting is important; if only to make sure that the same old faces and names don’t crop up again. Okay, so it might seem a bit much to compare the US presidential elections with the Travel Bulletin Star Awards. Clearly one has a bigger budget than the other (I’ll leave it to you to work out which one) and only one of them, as UK agents, will you have the right to vote on. But one thing remains the same; the candidates rely on your vote. Get involved in the 2012 Star Awards and make your feelings known. Support those who have supported you and with your help the best in the industry will get the recognition that they richly deserve. April 27 2012

We’re absolutely delighted to have picked up this award for the second year in a row and would like to thank all of the travel agents who voted for us. It is always a great honour to win an award at such a prestigious industry event. It means a great deal to Holiday Extras. We are very grateful to all those people within the industry that voted for us. We really enjoyed the event particularly the entertainment and The Jersey Boys. I thought the film quiz was a great addition, which was enjoyed by the whole table. More awards should think about doing something similar.” James Lewis, Holiday Extras 22

Star Awards 2012 For them it meant that their favourite companies felt appreciated and valued and that they had their say with the chance to make a difference. So if you’ve previously voted in our Star Awards – thank you and please continue to stand up and make your voice heard. And for all those potential first time-voters, consider this: if you value the service and support that you receive from principals then they should get your vote. Not only does casting a vote get your preferred suppliers closer to receiving an award, it also clarifies in their mind that they are doing something right for agents. And we all need approval from time to time to ensure we stay on the right track and that we are providing people with what they need.

Get your thinking cap on UT THERE’S a bit of thought that needs to go into your vote – more haste, less speed springs to mind. Don’t assume you should mention someone with whom you've made a couple of bookings - go with your heart. For example, perhaps base your decision on who gives you the best support to allow you to do your job to the best of your ability.
B
Remember – the awards are not fixed, not altered and are genuinely 100% decided on by you. So if you want the winners of any election to be truly representative and worthy then it’s your job to spend a little time on your selection. Voting is now open to all agents – including homeworkers – and you can vote online or by post, using the form on page 33. If you take a look at the full list of categories you will see that you have the opportunity to vote for who you believe rightly deserves an award. You’ll notice that we haven’t preempted a decision on which companies you should vote for by publishing a shortlist. When we say your vote counts, we mean it. So if you feel that the small operator who always gives great customer service is deserving of your vote – go ahead and put their name down. Chances are, other agents will have noted these positive traits and feel that they should have a fighting chance at being crowned the best in their class. To help your thought process when considering who should get your vote for the different categories, here’s a range of factors that you could take into consideration: www.travelbulletin.co.uk
●
Earning potential (commission & bonuses)
●
Deals, incentives & offers (both to you and your clients)
●
Help & support (on the phone, via reps etc)

Quality of the product and value for money

Reliability and reputation
●
Training provided (roadshows, online training, fam trips etc)
●
Ease of booking and processing bookings
●
Efficiency (how quickly do they respond to special requests or how good are they at dealing with problems that arise?)

Point of sale material (are posters, banners, brochures etc..readily available and easy to get hold of?)
●
Product range and choice (do they cater for a broad range of clients?) April 27 2012

One size doesn’t fit all HILE YOU’RE giving your thought to some of these factors, it’s equally as important to rule out the ‘one size fits all’ approach. In short this means that some of the things that are important for one kind of company will be less important (or possibly completely irrelevant) for another.
W
As an example, when you’re thinking about factors such as efficiency, and the first question that comes into your head is ‘how quickly does this company answer my call?’ you’ll need to rethink that question when you consider an airline reservation
company where you typically make straightforward point-to-point reservations using your GDS. Perhaps then you should ask yourself other questions that are more relevant to that type of service provided, such as ‘how efficient are they at responding to passenger requests?’ In short, it’s important to give careful consideration to why you are voting for a particular company and remember that all companies offer something different, or have a different way of operating. These are factors that you’ll need to take on board to make your vote justified.

No likey, no lighty We asked our staff the following question this week: What’s the one movie you can watch over and over again? Publisher: Jeanette Ratcliffe jeanette.ratcliffe@travelbulletin.co.uk Ghost, Pretty Woman, Meet The Parents... but my all time favourite has to be When Harry Met Sally

S THE headline suggests (thanks Paddy!), if you’re not feeling any sense of appreciation for a particular company then there’s no reason to vote for them. But on the other hand, if there’s a certain company who you believe should be rewarded for the way in which they help make your job as an agent that little bit easier, then voting is a great way of showing your gratitude and appreciation. After all, you can’t blame anyone but yourself if your favourite companies are not announced as award winners if you didn’t vote – make it your mission to try and complete all the categories that you can. So dig out that pen, get your thought process in motion and vote for your industry favourites – make their day by giving them the chance to win and acknowledge their good working practices and you may both be reaping the rewards for years to come.
