Buy souvenirs which benefit you, local people & environment say industry bodies THE TRAVEL Foundation and ABTA have revealed the findings of their Holiday Shopping Report, to coincide with this month’s Make Holidays Greener Month www.makeholidaysgreener.org.uk The findings revealed that British holidaymakers could be unwittingly spending up to 10% of their total holiday budget on souvenirs that are illegal, environmentallydamaging or destined to end up in the bin. With more than two-thirds of Brits admitting that shopping is one of the highlights of their holiday, the organisations are urging holidaymakers to choose souvenirs that support destination communities, reduce negative impacts on the environment and are likely to be enjoyed and valued for longer when they return home. The report shows there is confusion amongst holidaymakers about what is illegal to bring home and what is acceptable. Despite an international ban dating back to 1990, 11% of respondents thought they could bring ivory home from holiday from some or all countries and didn’t know whether or not they would be breaking the law. Some may also be at risk of prosecution when they return to the UK through importing souvenirs made from endangered species. Almost a third (29%) of respondents thought that bringing religious artefacts (objects with a special religious significance) home from holiday was illegal from some or
all countries, although that’s not the case (holidaymakers are however advised to establish whether these have been sourced legally). A further 17% thought the same of wood carvings and 16% believed that of leather goods. Another 15% admitted they had brought a shell or piece of coral back with them yet a third of these are either no longer displayed or had been binned. Coral and certain shells require a permit to be brought into the UK and marine ecosystems are threatened when they are harvested for souvenirs. The most popular holiday souvenir is the tshirt, with more than half of all Brits admitting that they’ve brought one back from their travels, yet only a handful of holidaymakers admit to ever wearing them when they get back home. Along with fake designer goods, they top the list of holiday memorabilia most likely to be discarded or binned within weeks of return. The report also revealed that almost threequarters of people (74%) enjoy buying from local markets, craftspeople and small shops to experience culture and buy unusual souvenirs. This in turn benefits the local economy. Local produce, such as olive oil, ornaments, handicrafts and jewellery are the most well-used post-holiday souvenirs, ● continues on next page

representing good buys. Sue Hurdle, chief executive of the Travel Foundation, said: “For those heading away on their summer holiday this year, look out for quality crafts, check to see where the item is made and what it’s made from - ask the stallholder or shop owner if there isn’t a label. Think about things you can imagine looking at or using when you get back home - local art which can be framed, rugs or hand-crafted jewellery - and don’t forget to enjoy the experience.” For details see www.makeholidaysgreener. org.uk

One Stop Touring Shop issues new 2013 North America brochures with new itineraries ONE STOP Touring Shop (1STS), which consists of the escorted touring brands, Insight Vacations, Trafalgar and Contiki Holidays, has launched all three of its US and Canada brochures with new destinations, new itineraries and new experiences. The company reports that sales for this region this year are so far up 30% over last year and to reflect this increased demand, all three brands have expanded their portfolios. For 2013, Insight Vacations launches seven new itineraries in its ultra-luxury Gold programme. These include Southern Tastes and Dixie Tunes, Capitals of Eastern Canada and Icons of the American Heartland. The new brochure also features 37 new and upgraded hotels and new destinations including Chicago, Nashville, Cape Cod and the Mississippi River, on the paddle-wheeled “American Queen” steamboat on an eight-day river cruise. Trafalgar’s 2013 brochure features ten new trips across the US, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama. The programme also features ten new local Be My Guest
dining experiences, six new Unique Insights and 17 new Local Specialities, as well as a new concept – Taste of America – which currently features two itineraries designed for foodies. Other new itineraries include the Florida Sunshine Trail, Aloha Hawaii and Canyon Country Jamboree, with the latter two representing an expansion of the operator's family-friendly portfolio. The major development in Contiki Holidays’ US & Canada 2013 programme is the launch of Coachella, an annual music and arts festival. The new six-night Coachella trip begins in Los Angeles before taking in the Palm Springs desert for three days of music and sunshine. There are two departures - April 10 and 17, 2013, catching both weekends of the festival. Both departures also give the option of connecting with another trip afterwards such as the Wild Western or the Western Highlights, taking in destinations such as San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, the Grand Canyon and more. W-AITO-Go! by CLAIRE HUNT, sales consultant at Journeys a la Carte and AITO Agents’ panel member
The hot topics in debate from a frontline travel agent ’M THE only member of the AITO Agents’ Panel who is wholly ‘front-line’ (I go around the world from my office chair everyday!) I have been with Journeys a la Carte for more than 12 years and, like the staff in most independent agencies, along with selling holidays, my colleagues and I are very much involved with all aspects of the business and current industry issues. I thought it would be interesting to give an overview of a few of the coffee break topics that we’ve recently found ourselves discussing and how we, as a business, are doing generally (there’s no need to mention the dreaded new ATOL regulations – this would be an article on its own!) We are barraged constantly by the publication of surveys and thoughts on the supposed death of the High Street travel agent. With the large operators closing shops as they drive sales through the internet instead, we independent agents should not complain as this provides us with a massive opportunity! I am confident that many AITO Agents are, like us, doing well - despite booking patterns this year being more ‘higgledy piggledy’ than ever. Some months have been incredible and others not so great, but it all balances out. So, how are specialist agents going to maintain and improve sales figures despite a predicted doom and gloom of press reports and surveys, in order to demonstrate that the independent sector is here to stay? Despite not having a shop front, we have found that word-of-mouth and client recommendations allow us to thrive, and that establishing a niche market is paramount. AITO Agents work in different ways – we all have slightly different ‘modus operandi’ - but what we all have in common is the advantage of working with AITO operators, as well as other excellent specialist operators. People are still travelling, of that there is no doubt, but now clients more than ever want to know that their money is being spent properly. It is inevitable that they will do their own research on the internet and look at costs. We are all conscious that we may be compared with other agencies or direct-sell companies and therefore knowledge, attention to detail and high levels of service are fundamental if we are going to get the booking and secure a life-long client. It will also be even more essential to work with tour operators who have the same ethos. Charging consultancy fees was a hot topic that AITO Agents debated during the recent overseas conference in Madeira. ‘Time wasters’ or ‘expertise takers’, is a subject that will always be contentious. Opinions on fees are very
I

July 27 2012
divided - some thought that discussing trips with a potential client was not a waste of time. A booking may not always result, but hopefully the client would take away a positive view of the agency, its knowledge and levels of service. Defining clients who will take expertise and book elsewhere can be difficult. At Journeys, our database records work done in the past for those who have not booked. If several enquiries worked on have not resulted in a booking, we feel comfortable in saying that a ‘refundable on booking fee’ will be charged. Tour operators working with non-bonded travel agents is another current contentious issue. Clearly, without the usual overheads and funds being tied up with bonding, these agents can afford to work with lower margins than bonded agents. This is an internal industry issue – a question of ethics - and we appreciate that tour operators take responsibility for the clients involved, but are concerned that, as agents, we are not working from a level playing field. This is a subject we feel very strongly about and is an issue that all agents should discuss with tour operators to make them aware of our concerns. Finally, as a member of the AITO Agents Panel, one of my roles is to support sustainable tourism. ‘Make Holidays Greener Month’ (this month) is a consumer awareness campaign that engages holidaymakers with the idea of ‘greener’ holidays, helping to protect the environment and benefit local people in tourist destinations. Get your clients to do just one thing when they next go on holiday that will help benefit local people and protect the environment in their holiday destinations. You can find lots of helpful information at www.makeholidaysgreener.org.uk

Planet urges agents to capitalise on renewed demand for Egypt PLANET HOLIDAYS is encouraging agents to highlight Egypt's attractions and sights to clients following increasing interest in the destination. The company's director, Harry Kyrillou, said: "Egypt is still to recover from the developments over the last 18 months and its tourism product is not performing as it might have been. However, this is a destination whose uniqueness will ensure it does come back as a top-selling tourism destination. This is particularly true for classic Egypt, that is to say the Nile cruises and packages that combine a classic trip with an extra week as an add-on to Red Sea holiday 'hot' spots. "We can offer agents tailor-made packages for their clients and help them to put together components for clients not looking for the traditional seven- and 14-night breaks to the Red Sea. Egypt should not be undersold by retailers and there is a great deal they can cash in on, if they want to pursue sales that require a little effort." As an example of prices, a seven-night breakfast stay at the Steinberger Al Dau leads in at £997 per person in October, based on two sharing. Flights from Gatwick and transfers are also included. egypt Mosaic Holidays sees families capitalising on value for money MOSAIC HOLIDAYS reports 'encouraging signs' for Egypt’s holiday trade and says that it has seen this summer’s lates market improve recently following the results of the Presidential elections, and as families increasingly look to maximise value for their holidays. The operator says that while it did not see a rise in bookings following England’s early exit from the Euro football championships, it did see a spike in enquiries once Wimbledon finished. The company's managing director, Sabina Shaida, said: "It seems that those people who did not obtain tickets for the Olympics are looking to get away. What we are not seeing is rock bottom prices, but we are seeing terrific value for holidays to Egypt. “Traditionally, we have seen many clients travel to Egypt’s Red Sea resorts for a quick week’s break each year, but this has changed temporarily. We are doing more multi-centre quotes now than at any time in the last 18 months and this suggests people want to get the maximum they can from their trip.” A number of hotels on Egypt’s Red Sea are offering extra value and early booking discounts, even at the higher end of the market, and the operator has discounts on holidays to a number of five-star hotels including the Savoy and Sierra
hotels in Sharm el Sheikh, as well as the Kempinski Hotel and Sheraton Hotel in Soma Bay. There are also discounts available at a number of four-star hotels and the operator is currently offering additional all-inclusive deals. JET2HOLIDAYS HAS launched its first dedicated cities brochure, as it sees an increased demand for authentic cultural breaks in top European capitals. The operator is responding to its What’s Hot 2012 report which revealed that 70% of couples deliberately choose a destination to savour its authenticity and 40% of all respondents look for a city break where they can immerse themselves in culture and history. The new brochure features more than 20 city destinations and more than 70 handpicked hotels, and offers insider tips from the best sightseeing opportunities to places to indulge in the finest local cuisine. The company's managing director, Steve Heapy, said: “We are committed to meeting the demand for package city breaks, hence the launch of this dedicated cities brochure. City breaks have always been a popular holiday choice but we are seeing an increasing number of people wanting the protection, convenience, ease, and value for money that comes with booking a package holiday.” ATOL-protected city breaks start from £199 for three nights in Prague at the three-star Hotel St George on a bed-and-breakfast basis, based on two sharing. Optional extras such as taxi or shuttle transfer, a 22kg baggage allowance and extra legroom are available, with a dedicated groups team also on hand for large groups planning a city break with friends. Predicted better weather could unleash ‘tidal wave of pent-up demand’ THE BEGINNING of the school summer holidays shouldn’t mark the end of the peak summer selling period – but the start of a vital phase of it, especially when it comes to lastminute UK short breaks. This is the advice to travel agents from Hoseasons, which says that the trend towards late booking is now so pronounced that the first half of the school summer holidays should see agents pushing late availability if they are not to
miss out on a key business opportunity. The operator also says that if new reports that the Jet Stream is heading back north to bring better weather in August are true, a ‘tidal wave of pent-up demand’ could be unleashed. The company's head of sales, Zena Calderbank, said: “Traditionally once the schools break up, the travel industry starts promoting autumn breaks. But this year we have seen incredibly late booking, and we believe there
are still plenty of families who intend to take a break over the school holiday, but who haven’t booked yet. “A combination of economic uncertainty and variable weather has meant that many people have held off booking until the very last minute. We believe that many families are waiting to see if the weather improves before they decide when they will go away – so there is potential to be selling peak summer breaks throughout the school holiday. This is particularly
true for those families planning to holiday in the UK. “Travel agents who use the next three weeks in particular to promote last minute getaways will find they are tapping into a potentially rich seam of business. “There is a tidal wave of pent-up demand which could be unleashed if these reports turn out to be justified and the sun comes out. This will bring huge business opportunities for agents, so it’s important that they are prepared to take advantage.”

an you imagine using Wi-fi in the forest while picking blueberries? Or strolling around the cobbled streets of a fairy tale city surrounded by top restaurants and stylish bars? Surprised? The Baltic countries are wonderful gateways full of history, culture and natural delights, yet surprisingly technologically advanced. Despite being a popular tourist destination, many UK visitors know relatively little about Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. But I believe there is nothing more exciting than being able to sell a destination to a client, who has almost no prior knowledge of it, and then be on the receiving end of their grateful and unique experience on their return. The evolution of the states Since the fall of the iron curtain, the changes that took place in these three countries were phenomenal and rapid. The Baltic countries soon achieved a modern way of life with standards akin to neighbouring Scandinavia. The quest for a good domestic lifestyle has led to a high quality of tourism infrastructure, yet at affordable prices, which now allows visitors to enjoy holiday opportunities to the Baltics without breaking the bank. Today the average visitor from UK to Estonia tends to be a fairly well-off frequent traveller, who takes at least two or three short trips a year. Visitors now can choose to visit one, two or even three countries in the same trip. Once part of the same overall state, travellers to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania can now clearly see the differences in architecture, language, culture, religion and style. And guests will find modern societies where Internet banking and ecommerce are commonplace, where payment by credit card is a part of everyday life, where voting in elections

takes place online and even car parking is done by mobile phone. Crossing borders Without border or currency restrictions, the ability to move through three such distinct countries is a clear advantage for tourists, travelling from the medieval Tallinn to the art nouveau Riga and ending in the baroque Vilnius and enjoying breath-taking scenery en-route. As in many destinations, tourism in the Baltic countries is largely focused on the capitals, although ecotourism and rural holidays have increased significantly in recent years with a wide offer of summer cottages, natural parks, beach resorts, islands and cultural heritage. From walking on boardwalks in forest bogs to holidaying in small wooden cabins near a tranquil lake, tourists make the most of the abundant natural landscapes, which make up more than half of each of the three Baltic countries. Touring the Baltic Capitals is not a new concept, but twin-city-breaks are becoming popular for those with less time on their hands, while at the same time wanting to see more. Time out in Tallinn Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is the oldest capital in the region and its location allows it to be combined with several two-city choices. For example, Tallinn and Stockholm with an overnight ferry in-between, Tallinn and Riga by flight or coach, Tallinn and Helsinki by a two-hour ferry one-way or Tallinn and St. Petersburg by train or coach. The highlight of a visit to Tallinn is taking a walk in the medieval old town, a UNESCO Heritage site. Or guests can venture further afield and take a tour to the Pirita district, the site of the yachting events for 1980’s Moscow Olympics, or
to Rocca al Mare Open Air Museum where guests will find reconstructions of traditional Estonian villages. Within an easy walk or tram ride of the Old Town, Tallinn, visitors can enjoy the calm and tranquility of Kadriorg Park with its parks, gardens and art museum. Those interested in recent history might enjoy a Soviet legacy themed tour, or take a step back in time to the unspoiled Lahemaa National Park, offering a glimpse of the BalticGerman manor houses and history, traditional Estonian seaside and fishing villages with their taverns and untouched nature. Opera is relatively inexpensive in Estonia, particularly for British visitors, and standards are high. An affordable visit to the National Opera makes for an enjoyable evening, while daytime spas and shopping or out of town golf provide distractions for friends and couples visiting Tallinn. Christmas is also a wonderful time to visit Tallinn. The streets are filled with the scent of ginger, cinnamon and mulled wine. The biggest event of the season is the Christmas market throughout December in Tallinn’s town hall square, described by some as the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale in real life, especially when the first snow arrives. The uniqueness and similarities between Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will make every trip a pleasing experience. For those who have never visited the region, they will be positively surprised. ✦

How SATOA helps agents gain targeted knowledge by JUANITA COLLINS, SATOA
W
ITH HUNDREDS and thousands of agents throughout the UK and a glut of messages pervading the travel industry the big question is, how does a tour operator reach its target audience? And importantly too, how do agents glean the requisite knowledge which will set them apart from their competitors? Now in its 30th year, SATOA has become an expert at providing a unique and rewarding experience for agents, tour operators, hoteliers and airlines. In the absence of fam trips, which although are seemingly widely available, sometimes seem very much absent for new and enterprising agents, SATOA provides a platform for agents to gain targeted knowledge of

hotels, airlines and destinations. Importantly SATOA travel agent events teach ‘How to Sell’ the respective properties, destinations and airlines because agents sell products they know and product knowledge underpins all branding. Feedback post the SATOA travel agent evenings has been exceptionally positive, as related by Caroline who said: “Thank you so much - the running of the night was excellent and very interactive which is fantastic. It was fun and that’s what TA’s always remember; a fun night where they are learning without feeling the pressure. Thank you for your great organisation.” Agents interested in attending can make a note of the next three workshops: Berkshire on October 9, Manchester on October 10 and London
on December 10. Additionally there are three upcoming tour operator dinners Yorkshire on September 19, Cheshire on October 11 and Glasgow on November 28. SATOA is committed to promoting Africa and the Indian Ocean via its many mediums and aims to give agents and operators alike an opportunity to network, share knowledge and engender growth via its travel agent evenings, tour operator dinners, dedicated website and awards evening, which this year takes place on September 12. ✦

Acacia Africa sees upturn in sales to Sub-Saharan Africa ACCORDING TO Acacia Africa sales throughout Sub-Saharan African are starting to pick up and South Africa is now being viewed as the country to watch. The operator's project and development manager, Leanne Haigh, said: “Last year was a difficult year for the travel industry as a whole, but there’s been a huge turn around when it comes to bookings. Since February, month-on-month sales have outstripped last year's figures and while consumers remain cautious, there’s a greater demand for our tours across the board. "In particular our longer overland tours such as the 58-day Ultimate African Overlander and small group

safaris, especially with reference to South Africa are selling well. “It’s not just about deals. People are looking for value for money in their chosen destination and the British pound has strengthened against the South African rand.” The operator claims that this is one of the main reasons for the country’s continuing popularity, but the adventure specialist also believes that positive currency conversions are not a quick fix, and product offering is key. Haigh said: “Consumers are becoming more adventurous and while the Kruger National Park and Cape Town are major draw cards for South Africa, it’s the country’s best kept secrets and up and coming provinces,
for example KwaZulu-Natal, that will keep sales bouyant. It’s about exciting the consumer, the research and development phase playing a defining role in the growth of sales in South Africa, and across the SubSaharan region.” As an example of prices, a seven-day Kruger, Swaziland & Durban small group safari, leads in at £525 per person plus a local payment of £267 and includes game drives in South Africa’s Hluhluwe National Park, a Zulu village visit, a St Lucia river cruise and nature trekking in Swaziland’s Mlilwane Wild Life Sanctuary.
