FAM-TASTIC...Ethos Marketing, UK office for Serena Hotels, recently took a fam trip to Kenya, visiting Nairobi, Sweetwaters, Mountain Lodge, Lake Elmenteita in Soysambu and a stay at Serena Beach Hotel & Spa north of Mombasa. Highlights included game viewing in the Sweetwaters Conservancy and a forest walk with Benson at Serena Mountain Lodge. Pictured at Lake Elmenteita are, from the left: Alison Whitfield, Ethos Marketing/Serena Hotels; Marie Cavie, Africa Safari Direct; Vicki Bramley, Kuoni Guildford; Kelly Campbell, Kuoni Dorking; Katie Crofts, TUI; and Paresh Patel, Shiv Travel.

One in three Brits tidy up hotel room before checking out CARRYING OUR own bags to avoid troubling the porter, not asking the concierge for help and apologising when it’s not our fault are all traits that define us as British when staying in a hotel. New research from costfree app platform, Appy Hotel, has also revealed that just under a third (32%) of British hotel guests make the bed and tidyup or even wash up tea and coffee cups before checking out of their rooms. When asked about cleaning up after themselves, almost one in ten Brits said that to lighten the maid’s workload, they would avoid wearing the hotel robe and

using the tea making facilities. A further 15% of the 1,000 Britons surveyed said that they would rather stride off in the direction they thought a concierge had told them, despite forgetting what they had said, than ask again. Not asking a member of hotel staff for help is particularly true of the younger groups, with 73% of 18-34 years olds preferring to deal with the problem themselves. In a bid to avoid the scenario face-to-face, one in three (34%) British hotel stayers said they’d feel happier asking for help over the phone or via a mobile or tablet app.

Poll reveals UK holidaymakers are no couch potatoes FAR FROM being a nation of couch potatoes, three-quarters of adults aged between 18 and 64 want to ‘have a go’ at a new sport or physical activity while on holiday, according to the new Post Office Travel Money Activity Barometer. Rally car driving tops a list of 27 activities picked by people who want to experience a new activity on holiday, with 58% saying they want to try it on a future holiday. This figure rose to almost twothirds (65%) of those aged 35-44 and was the top choice for ‘empty nesters’ as well with 38% of 55-64 year olds wanting to get behind the wheel of a rally car for the first time.

The active streak revealed by the report looks likely to be a serious intention as two-thirds of the adults surveyed had already taken part in one of the 27 activities on a previous holiday. Aside from rally car driving, the activities with greatest appeal were adventure sports rather than mainstream ones like cycling, fishing or golf, which were picked by 27-28% of people. By contrast, at least 40% want to try a water-based sport. Scuba diving (49%), water skiing (47%), sailing (44%), white water rafting ● continues on next page

newsbulletin Cosmos Holidays expands Greece programme with range of early booking offers COSMOS HOLIDAYS has launched its 2014 Greece programme featuring more than 60 new properties, eight new resorts, additional regional and high season flights, as well as a new ‘authentic’ concept. Early booking offers include a deposit of £99 per person and savings of up to £200 per couple for bookings made before November 30, as well as free child places at selected properties. Prices for a seven-night package in Zante lead in at £375 per person. New resorts on Corfu include Agios Stefanos, Corfu Town, Gouvia and Ipsos, while the smaller and traditional coastal villages of Milina and Agios Ioannis in the Pelion region and the hillside resort of Katsarou in Skiathos and Agios Nikitas on Lefkas have been introduced for the first time. Additional weekly flights from Birmingham for next summer have been added to include Preveza (Sunday), Volos/Skiathos (Friday) and Kefalonia (Sunday). New high season

flights from Manchester to Corfu, Skiathos, Volos, Zante and from Gatwick to Rhodes have also been added. Meanwhile, a new ‘authentic’ concept has been introduced with its own symbol to help agents identify traditional style accommodation for customers wanting an authentic Greek getaway. Properties include the Paxos Beach Hotel in Gaios and the Flyfada Beach Villas in Loggos (priced from £675 per person) on the small Ionian island of Paxos. For more information call 0871-902 5818 or see www.cosmos.co.uk

(43%), canoeing (41%) and surfing or kite surfing (40%) all scored highly, as did snowboarding (41%) and jungle trekking (45%), which were the other top ten choices. When asked how much extra they would pay to try an activity, the most the survey respondents would spend was on sky diving (£126). For most activities the amount people would spend ranged from £48 (mountain biking) to £95 (paragliding) although the average for a rally driving experience was almost £112. However, price checks by Post Office Travel Money in a range of overseas destinations revealed that none of the rally driving sessions researched fell within the £112 mark. The cheapest was a six-lap Subaru Rally Experience in Melbourne at around £167, while a tenlap Subaru Rally Experience in Paris costs more than £338. The only rally car experience that came within budget was a £99 one-hour Rally Thrill with 12 minutes’ driving at Silverstone. The company's head of travel Paul Havenhand said: "Our Activity Barometer established that there is a real appetite to have a go at a surprising number of adventure sports and that many people want to have their first experience of these while on holiday when they have the time to try something they have always wanted to do. “However, they need to budget carefully and take sufficient foreign currency with them to cover the cost of that activity. Our research showed that people were realistic about the cost of some sports but not about others. We also found that the cost of learning a new skill on a course, rather than as a one-off taster was much more expensive."

BIG ‘Thank You’ to Lisa Jacobs & Wayne Beard from Cruise & Maritime for inviting me on a brilliant ship visit on the Discovery in Hull. We started with a taste of what their evening show is like with really good singers and dancers. Talk about foot tapping - I didn’t want to move on - it really got us in the mood! The food was excellent and we had a great lunch with a tour of the ship. I was very impressed with the size of the cabins. I think customers will really enjoy themselves on this friendly, intimate ship which takes 700 passengers – and I think the ship will soon build up a lot of repeat customers. It is also fantastic that there are cruises from Hull as well - check out their website at www.cruiseandmaritime.com for special offers and they have great deals for 2014 as well. Have been helping out a few times at Paramount Travel on the edge of Leeds next to a big Morrison’s Store – very handy for doing your shopping! Nicola and Kirsten get a lot of repeat customers and sometimes it’s like being in someone’s lounge as they know a lot of their customers as soon as they walk in because they have travelled with them so many times before. I really think a lot of multiples must miss out on this sort of atmosphere and customer rapport this is where independent travel agents come into their own. Have already starting to plan next year’s Yorkshire Travel Ball. It will be on Thurs 17th July – staying with the Village South Leeds Hotel as it was so good – looking forward to it already! The way the time is going it will soon be here – mum always used to say, as you got older the time went faster and I used to laugh, but I think she was right as it certainly seems to be flying by. ‘At the worst, a house unkept cannot be so distressing as a life unlived’ and ‘I not only use all the brains that I have but all that I can borrow’.

The camp’s bar will also benefit from an added level, while a dedicated open air ‘boma’ area will be reserved for participative experiences with the local Maasai people. A naturalist library will invite guests to explore, while the redesigned Safari Shop will showcase Kenyan crafts.

While 28 of the camp’s tented suites will be closed from October 15 to June 30 next year, 12 luxury tents on the Sabaringo River will remain open throughout the rebuild, as will sister lodge Bateleur Camp. The camp will reopen officially on July 1. Meanwhile, at its Ngorongoro Crater Lodge in Tanzania, the operator has introduced a honeymoon rose petal dinner. The experience includes a hot bubble bath followed by a private dinner on a carpet of rose petals, accompanied by a bottle of Champagne.

Gatwick transformation takes off to reach new heights of public approval WATCH OUT for Gatwick. While it has just announced a plan to add a second runway by 2025, the current world's busiest single runway airport with 850 take-offs and landings a day, or 56 an hour, Gatwick Airport Limited has so far invested £1.2billion since it acquired it from BAA in 2010. In an ongoing transformation, it has managed to change the look of the public areas and seen its customer satisfaction rates rocket. It has completely redesigned the South Terminal security area to virtually eliminate the old familiar snaking queues so that 95% of passengers are through within five minutes, with families getting special treatment. The North Terminal is next for a similar update. And the statistics are impressive - 48 scheduled airlines operate to 187 destinations, 37 of them long-haul, and there are 25,000 people employed across the site. This summer has seen a complete renovation of the retail space at Gatwick’s South Terminal, starting with the opening of ten new stores, including Kurt Geiger, Hugo Boss, Lacoste and Case - plus, at the beginning of this month, Harrods. Two new stores - Aspinal of London and Ernest Jones - are available for the first time at

an airport in the UK, while the Harrods department store focuses on fashion and accessories. There has also been a strong focus on technology in some stores – including digital screens in Ernest Jones and tablets in Dixons Travel outlets. In addition, Samsung ‘info tablets’ are available across the airport at key points to offer shopping updates, from opening hours to locations of shops and restaurants. The airport website will also be available for passengers to instantly access airport, airline and onward travel information. A new marketing campaign at www.gatwickairport.com/voucherpassport gives passengers the chance to download or print an exclusive voucher passport with savings of up to £400. The North Terminal retail space, which includes Jamie Oliver's new Jamie's Italian bar and restaurant, and a refurbished Wetherspoon's Red Lion pub, also recently opened the world’s first Ted Baker accessories-only store, a Boots Express, Lacoste and Superdry.

W-AITO-Go! Exploring Oman with Kirker Holidays by MARTYN FISHER of Greenstar Travel AM TRIPS are extremely important to Greenstar Travel – once you’ve been able to soak up a destination you are equipped to sell it effectively. I was lucky enough to be invited to join some fellow AITO Agents on a Kirker Holidays FAM trip to Oman in early June.

F

I was particularly looking forward to it as Kirker’s FAM trips are always well thought-out and showcase the cultural side of a destination, which is important to many of our clients. If they visit Oman, they generally want to see more than the beaches, which incidentally are gorgeous. It was the first time I’d visited Oman and it surpassed my already high-expectations. We flew with Emirates via Dubai and it was a manageable journey of about eight hours in total and only a three-hour time difference in Oman from the UK, so it’s fairly easy to acclimatise. I was impressed with the A380 because despite it being a huge aircraft, it still manages to be more than comfortable due to the improved seating, in-flight entertainment and the number of Emirates crew. As expected it was pretty warm at this time of year, but all the hotels, restaurants and transfer vehicles are very comfortable with state-of-the-art air-conditioning. Temperatures can rise to more than 40° so excursions are better early in the day - and remember that it’s cooler in the breathtaking mountains. There are also some really affordable breaks during this time of year so it can work for some clients. However, for those seeking warmer temperatures it is best to visit during the winter, spring or autumn and you’ll be almost guaranteed sunny blue skies – Oman typically only experiences a few days of rain every year. We stayed at the newly renovated Al Bustan Palace Hotel in Muscat, the capital of Oman, and it was such a treat. Our group were surprised at the size of the grand lobby with its high ceilings and glittering chandelier. It has 250 guest rooms overlooking the mountains and 200 acres of private gardens, shoreline and infinity pools - and one of the floors in the hotel is reserved solely for guests of the Sultan! Each evening the menu changes in the restaurant and we can all recommend the mouthwatering Indian buffet dinner that we had courtesy of our hosts, Hisham and Kathryn of Kirker. Oman is a largely unspoilt landscape, more mountain than desert, with fascinating wadis dissecting the landscape, which features underground caves, exotic flora and fauna and miles of coast. It is literally oozing with history, with more than 1,000 castles, forts and watchtowers dotted around the landscape. We explored the landscape and history via 4x4 jeep tours, with excursions from Muscat including a wander around Nizwa Souq – bursting with authentic spice stalls and other exotic local produce - and visits to the Grand Canyon and Green Mountains.

www.travelbulletin.co.uk

The view of the Green Mountains was particularly breathtaking; the pretty terraced villages growing Mediterranean fruits and nestled amongst the towering mountains. Princess Diana visited in 1986 and there’s a viewpoint there called ‘Diana’s Point’ to mark this. We tucked into delicious local cuisine at the Al Sabah Hotel, which overlooks the mountains and it is a wonderful contrast to combine with a stay in Muscat. I enjoyed taking in Muscat too – it was bigger than I had imagined and highly civilised. Highlights included the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque which surely deserves an award for the world’s most beautiful mosque. I didn’t expect to find the visit so moving, with an expert local guide telling us about what it means to be Islamic in Oman. It is big enough to hold more than 10,000 people and the attention to detail is out of this world – full of the most intricate work. The carpet covering the floor is the largest in the world. It took 600 female weavers in Iran three years to make it and it had to be transported on three planes and then stitched together on site. The Bay of Muttrah is a must-see, too, especially early evening when the locals gather there after work, as well as the traditional souk which sells a vast array of jewellery, spices, frankincense, burners and pashminas. We inspected a selection of other fantastic hotels in Muscat during our visit. The very stylish Chedi, with its new luxury spa and enormous infinity pool; the Shangri-La Baar Al Jissah Resort and Spa, which is particularly family-friendly and the InterContinental, located opposite the Royal Opera House for anyone who has clients interested in the arts – all boasting prime locations by the ocean. So, I was left in awe of Oman and came away feeling that we had experienced a wonderful and highly authentic corner of Arabia...and couldn’t stop talking about it with my fellow group members once we arrived at the AITO conference in Dubai. Thank you so much to Kirker Holidays for the fantastic trip – where are we going next?!

themeparks Chessington unveils Hocus Pocus Hall: The Curse of the Emerald

staffreview Lauretta Wright from Travel Bulletin visited Cornwall's Crealy on a day trip with her family. Here's what she thought of the theme park....

First impressions ................................9/10 We visited on a day that was hot, so headed straight for the log flume to cool down and were pleasantly surprised to find we were first in line - getting to the park early had paid off. There seemed to be lots of attractions and things to look at. This was going to be a busy day...

Ride selection......................................7/10 The rides, activities and attractions are mostly suited to families with younger children. There are no huge rollercoasters but that didn't stop us from having fun and actually gave us a chance to put our feet up while the kids tried the rides on their own.

Activities and attractions ....................9/10 The park is ideal for an all-weather visit. There are plenty of things to do indoors - from character events and live shows to attractions such as the Haunted Castle and Playzone arcade. Outdoor activities (if they tire from the rides) range from horse-riding (they loved this!) to a Pets Paddock and Remote Controlled Cars.

Affordability ........................................8/10 A family of four costs £63.80 or £54.24 if booking online. For details see www.crealy.co.uk

Good to know ............................................ Make sure you visit the water fight activity if it's a hot day. You can buy water bombs from a dispensing machine and use the cups they come in (after the bombs have run out) to continue the fight! Crealy also has a sister park in Devon.

Overall scoring: ..................

themeparks Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood & Universal Orlando FANS WITH a voracious appetite for AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’ will have a chance to walk in the footsteps of human survivors when Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort debut new mazes inspired by Season 3 of the TV series at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights events, beginning on September 20. The eerily authentic and disturbingly real maze experiences will place guests at the heart of the show’s once impenetrable prison, the West Georgia Correctional Facility, now overrun by hordes of flesh-eating walkers, and will send guests cowering through the walkerinfested wilderness that surrounds the prison and into the seemingly utopian town of Woodbury where gruesome secrets are concealed. Universal Orlando is also dedicating its entire Halloween Horror Nights street experience to ‘The Walking Dead’ – making this the first time that all of the scare zones throughout the park will be themed after a hit television series. Guests brave enough to walk the streets of Universal Studios Florida will encounter iconic scenes from all three seasons of the hit show including the perilous city of Atlanta and Hershel’s dismal barn - and fleets of blood-thirsty walkers who are hungry for their next victim. ’The Walking Dead’ series is based on the graphic novel written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. The series tells the story of the months and years after a zombie apocalypse and follows a group of survivors, led by sheriff Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. John Murdy, creative director for Universal Studios Hollywood, said: “What’s great about working with a property like ‘The Walking Dead’ is that each season presents new environments and characters for us to draw inspiration. “With the prison as the main setting of Season 3, we seized this opportunity to recreate that very environment, down to the last detail, to be as genuine

and authentic to the show as possible. Using moviequality production value, our goal is to make guests feel as if they are mired in the world of blood-thirsty zombies, which is something you can only do at Halloween Horror Nights.” For more information visit www.halloweenhorrornights.com
