Research shows popularity of mobile devices for online bookings WHEN IT comes to booking holidays online many people are using their mobile devices to book, according to new research from ABTA. When asked what device they used when booking a holiday online in the last 12 months (either through a travel agent, tour operator, bookings engine or direct), nearly a quarter (24%) of people had used a mobile phone or tablet device, such as an iPad. Although the PC/laptop remains the device of choice, used by 89% of people who booked a holiday online, some 14% of respondents said they used their mobile phone to book a holiday online and 10% booked on a tablet device, highlighting the importance for agents and operators to have apps that are compatible with these devices. The figure for domestic bookings online was similar, with 8% using a tablet device and 12% using their mobile phone. The younger generation has particularly embraced mobile devices when they book a holiday online, according to the association, with nearly half (47%) of those aged 15-24 using this method to book an overseas trip in the last 12 months. The number booking online via a mobile device drops significantly for those aged over 45 with just over one in ten (11%) of those aged 45-54 having used a mobile device to book online. Males were also more likely to book on the go, with 30% of them using a mobile device to book a holiday online in the last 12 months compared to 17% of females. ABTA's head of communications, Victoria Bacon, said: “When it comes to booking a holiday it’s clear that consumers want choice. Whether it’s booking face-to-face on the High Street or booking on the go on a mobile phone. Travel agents and tour operators need to ensure that they have the right tools and technologies to market their products and offer consumers the option to book and browse, through a range of different methods.”

newsbulletin First Choice offers ‘tour & stay’ and twincentre breaks for winter 2013

agentreview Lisa Gilham from The Co-operative Travel in Spalding stayed at the five-star The Grand Hotel & Spa in Jersey for two nights with Airways. Here's what she thought of the property...

First impressions ..................................10/10 On arrival we were given a warm welcome from all staff. We were all allocated the key to our rooms and then escorted by a member of staff, shortly followed by our luggage.

Comfort ..................................................10/10 The hotel had a very luxurious feel to it, offering seating areas with comfy sofas which were very homely.

Quality ......................................................9/10 The hotel is rated five-star which I would agree with, but there were a few little things in the rooms which could be improved, including the bed throw which had seen better days. Facilities in the rooms were fantastic including a choice of up-to-date films, self un-steam mirror, and much more. Another brilliant quality of the hotel is its cinema room, which had very comfortable seats.

FIRST CHOICE has launched its ‘First Choice Tropical’ longhaul brochure covering its summer 2013 (second edition) and winter 2013 programme. The company has announced that from winter next year the Thomson 787 Dreamliner will fly direct to Phuket from Gatwick, where customers will have the chance to stay at a new SplashWorld property. An extensive ‘tour and stay’, twin-centre and pure beach centre programme is also new for next winter where, for example, holidaymakers can either stay for three nights in Bangkok combined with an 11-night stay in Krabi, Khao Lak or Phuket. Another new destination is Samana on the east coast of the Dominican Republic, where clients will have exclusive access flying from Gatwick next summer. Meanwhile, the Gran Bahia Principe hotels in Mexico, Jamaica, Punta Cana and Samana are offering exclusive upgrades for next summer. All customers booking by January 31, 2013 will automatically be upgraded from a standard room to a Golden Club room. First Choice offers 14-night holidays to Mexico, staying at the Gran Bahia Principal Akumal on an allinclusive basis from ÂŁ1,235 per person. The price is based on two sharing and includes flights from Gatwick on November 27, 2013. A new ‘Tropical Treats’ range offers 14-night holidays at the Maldives’ Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa on an all-inclusive basis from ÂŁ2,605 per person. The price is based on two sharing and includes flights on December 1, 2013. For more information or to book visit www.firstchoice.co.uk

Affordability ............................................9/10 I was very surprised by what Jersey had to offer and I loved it. Prices were expensive though and I would personally want to go somewhere much warmer for the same money.

Service ..................................................10/10 Service at the hotel was fab. At breakfast, if you could not find something you wanted the staff are more than happy to get it for you.

Good to know .................................................. We were allocated a side sea view room which I would definitely recommend as you get a view of the park and the sea at a cheaper price! I would also suggest guests try out the hotel's spa.

A SURVEY by HomeAway.co.uk has revealed that the Number 1 family row is where to spend Christmas Day, while at least half of us argue on a daily basis during our annual holiday. The study of 2,000 Brits found that almost half of respondents argue up to five times during the festive season. Which side of the family to visit or invite over for Christmas is the second biggest cause of rows. A further 26% bicker about how much money to spend on one another, and their friends and family. Other clangers include who carves the turkey, who does the washing up and what to watch on TV. Families and couples feel under more pressure at Christmas than other times of year, according to Relate, the relationship support charity. Despite this, the majority of people agree that being together as a family is the most important thing overall. Over 70% of survey respondents agreed with this unanimously and one in three said Christmas was a good time to go away with family and friends.

Paul Sharp The agency sales manager of The River Cruise Line says he’d like to predict the future and never forgets his iPod when travelling...

"How do I deal with stress? Spinning at the gym in a darkened room listening to 'old skool' Ibiza anthems"

Who is your ideal travelling companion? Sarah Beeny. What's your earliest childhood memory? Enjoying a family Christmas. Where was your last work-related trip? A trip on the Dutch Waterways on the mps Calypso which was chartered by one of our agents. We went to Maastricht, Valkenburg, Delft and the 2012 Floriade Festival. If you were a celebrity who would you choose to be and why? Dermot O’Leary – he is just too cool! What three words would your friends use to describe you? Passionate, loyal, fun-loving. What have your travels taught you? To always have a great sense of humour. What is the best advice you recall? Feel the fear and do it anyway! If you could have a room full of any one thing, what would it be? £50 notes! If you could change three things in the industry, what would they be? 1. More recognition of the amount of resilience and tenacity travel agents have in a tough economic environment. 2. Those who travel really appreciating the work and efforts of all concerned in delivering holidays. 3. Formal accreditation for industry knowledge that is recognised and respected by other disciplines of the working world. Who has been the biggest inspiration/influence in your career? My parents – I want to do them proud and be the best at what I do.

14

Career path ● ● ● ●

River Cruise Line: Agency sales manager - April 2011-present Haven Holidays: Groups & events manager - 1 year Complete Cruise Solution: Regional sales manager - 1 Year P&O Cruises: Onboard shore excursions & operations manager – 5 years Thomson Holidays: Resort manager - 5 years

What's your favourite city and why? Barcelona, because there is just so much to do there – great food, music, art, people – you name it, it has it. If you were not doing this job, what would you be doing? Running a tea room or stylish coffee bar/bistro. What is your motto in life? Feel the fear and do it anyway. What is your favourite mode of travel? Ships of course! If you had a super power what would it be and why? I would like to be able to predict the future. Where did I put that lottery ticket....?

November 30 2012

What was your nickname at school and why? Sharpie – the name says it all. What item do you always take with you when travelling? My iPod. To quote John Miles: “To live without my music would be impossible to do, because in this world of trouble, my music sees me through”. What's your favourite airline and why? BA – First Class service all the way. How do you deal with stress? Spinning at the gym, in a darkened room listening to “old skool” Ibiza anthems. Is there anything that you dislike about the travel industry? Only that people outside the industry seem to think we are forever jetting off on holiday and sometimes don’t appreciate the hard work and resourcefulness involved. What special skill do you have? I don’t think I’ve got any ‘special’ skill. I’m just the same as anyone else and try to apply those skills I have to the very best of my ability. How do you cope with the advances in technology? Love it, embrace it and run with it. What’s your favourite movie of all time? The Empire Strikes Back. If your life was turned into a movie, which actor would play you? Johnny Depp. I think he’s brilliant at any role he takes on and would definitely do the role justice.

crosschannel Port of Dover donation to National Trust helps keep White Cliffs safe THE PORT of Dover, which has been working closely with the National Trust in support of its ‘Save the Cliffs’ campaign, has made a donation that will ensure that the White Cliffs of Dover, an internationally recognised landmark, will rest in the safe hands of the body established to protect the nation’s heritage. The port's chief executive Bob Goldfield said: “I am very pleased that by enabling the National Trust to meet their target early, we have played a part in ensuring that the White Cliffs of Dover, an internationally renowned element of the UK’s history and identity, will remain a national treasure for the enjoyment of all. “It was very important to us that our donation would assist the Trust in its ability to maintain and protect the Cliffs, thereby ensuring a real and lasting legacy.” Meanwhile, as a demonstration of its long-term

commitment to maintaining Europe’s busiest international ferry port, the Port of Dover’s grab hopper dredger MV David Church has undergone a comprehensive upgrade worth almost half a million pounds. The upgrade will ensure another 15 years of quality service for the Port’s customers, including its major ferry and cruise customers. The port's general manager of operations Paul Brown said: “The David Church was specifically designed for operating in the Port of Dover and has been doing a vital job for 17 years now. This unique resource is essential in maintaining the depths of navigable water within the harbour so that all vessels can navigate safely without the risk of grounding. This dredging regime is particularly important to Dover’s cruise business as every year the fairway is dredged to cater for the deep draft cruise ships that call at the port.”

These regions are now working on a joint European project for the commemorations for 2014: "The Great War Remembered" or "1418 Remembered", supported by the Interreg iv-programme.
