WITH THE uncertainty of Brexit and the pound continuing to be turbulent, research by Club Med has revealed that Brits are much more money conscious when booking ski holidays.

The report reveals that value for money is the overall most important factor when choosing a destination and resort, with almost half (44%) of people surveyed saying that they choose a resort based on value for money, 22% want to have all their amenities on site, and almost one-in-five (18%) opt for luxurious accommodation.

France comes out on top in the research for being the best value country for skiing and snowboarding. The

resort where holidaymakers spend the least outside of accommodation is Morzine in France (£452 per person) whilst St Moritz proved to be the destination where people spend the most outside of the accommodation at £770 per person.

When it comes to spending habits on winter sports holidays, on average, people spend the most amount of money on food and drinks (£577), followed by ski and snowboard equipment (£283), transport (£271) and après-ski (£267).

In 2018, 17% of Brits surveyed said that they stayed in an all-inclusive resort and the findings from this year’s ski report reveals that that

figure has risen to 29% – a 70% year-on-year increase – with the research showing that the all-inclusive model has become the most popular accommodation type for ski and snowboard holidays.

Around two-thirds (61%) of people said they are more likely to book an all-inclusive holiday in light of Brexit – an increase of 190% compared to the research commissioned this time last year.

Gallivanting on the Galapagos with Six Senses SIX SENSES Hotels Resorts Spas has announced its first resort in the Galápagos Islands will open in 2021.

Six Senses Galápagos will be located on San Cristobal Island, in the town of Cerro Verde on the Northeastern coast, positioned on a hill with views of the ocean and other landmarks.

Promising to be a sustainable venture, all building work is in accordance with local laws and with strong involvement from the local community.

Nobu unveils hotel in Barcelona NOBU HOTEL has opened its doors in Barcelona. The hotel will bring with it Barcelona’s first Nobu Restaurant, featuring a modern design and views over the city.

The Restaurant, Nobu Barcelona, is a sky-high dining destination situated on the 23rd floor. The restaurant’s dishes include flavours and influences from Spain. Unique to the hotel is the lobby dining spot, Kozara, which serves Japanese-inspired Catalan tapas, paired with cocktails using a large collection of sake and whisky. Guests not wanting to venture too far from their rooms can enjoy a wide selection of dishes from the Nobu in-room dining menu.

INVITING GUESTS to discover the marine life of the Andaman sea this November, Pimalai Resort and Spa has launched a scuba diving programme. Guests of the resort will be able to get closer to nature and join the graceful giant of the ocean, the whale shark, in its natural habitat. This coastal area is one of the first to welcome the whale shark each dive season, claiming the most frequent sightings throughout South East Asia.

Turkey to boost tourism IN A bid to make tourism a significant economic sector for the country, Turkey’s new tourism strategy has a target to attract over 75 million visitors and $65 billion in revenue a year by 2023.

The minister for culture and tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, introduced Turkey’s Tourism Strategy 2023, which switches the approach to a sustainable and income-driven model, at a press conference in Istanbul.

The strategy comes within the scope of targets set by Turkey’s wider development plans and summarises improvements and changes that are expected to be made in the country’s tourism sector.

Carving up the snow with Undiscovered Mountains A CROSS-COUNTRY skiing package from Undiscovered Mountains offers holidaymakers an opportunity to stay in a rustic and traditional Norwegian hytte.

The tour features an expedition to a traditional Norwegian hytte, which can only be reached by skiing through the mountains.

Travellers will stay overnight, keeping warm with the woodburning stove which is also used for melting snow for water and cooking dinner.

Three days of the trip will be dedicated to learning cross-country skiing in preparation for the hytte expedition. Visitors will be given ski lessons from an instructor, who will guide participants on everything they need to know to take on the journey to the hytte.

Further adventures on this tour include cross country skiing through the wilderness, with excursions including animal tracking where skiers will be taught how to decipher animal

tracks from native Norwegian animals including moose, reindeer and hares, and orienteering.

A unique highlight of the trip is the opportunity to experience night skiing, which offers a change in senses allowing the sensations of skiing to be felt more acutely.

mushing a team of huskies, snowshoeing through the Norwegian wilderness, riding a horse-drawn sleigh and ice fishing.

Fred. Olsen' Braemar is the largest ship to transit Corinth Canal FRED. OLSEN CRUISE Lines' guests experienced a transit of the 6.4km-long Corinth Canal in Greece, as the 929-guest Braemar broke the existing record to become the largest ship ever to traverse this feat of engineering.

The Corinth Canal is a waterway that separates the Greek mainland from the Peloponnese, turning it into an island. It is an important navigational route, which once allowed ships to enter the Aegean Sea. Clare Ward, director of product and customer service for the cruise line, said: “We have already had exceptionally high interest in our second Corinth Canal cruise, in Spring 2021, and we can't wait to do it all over again.”

Venture into Venice with St. Regis Hotels ST. REGIS Hotels & Resorts announced the debut of The St. Regis Venice, located steps away from Piazza San Marco and boasting the largest water frontage in Venice. The opening follows a two-year, full-scale renovation.

The gin’s maiden production will take place in Iona’s custom-made still and will be distilled, bottled and labelled on-board, allowing Iona’s guests to be the first to enjoy the gin.

Following the gin’s launch on Iona, Salcombe Gin will also distil the unique recipe, yet to be named, in its 450 litre copper still ‘Provident’ in Salcombe, ready to share and serve exclusively across all ships in the fleet.

The key to client retention is having your customers invest in you as a person and provider of exceptional service, more than the products you sell. Relentless attention to detail and striving to exceed expectations every single time will establish you as an indispensable part of their lives and professional networks.

Once you have created nurtured and trusted relationships with your customers, you are presented with a great opportunity to ask for referrals. Satisfied customers will be happy to recommend you, provided you are consistently delivering the highest levels of service.

Effective referrals can unlock huge potential as your most valued clientele introduce you to their own contacts, with similar leisure tastes and spending potential. As your client list grows you should always seek to differentiate yourself. Working hard and ensuring every customer experience has that magic touch will define your value.

When pricing, be confident without being greedy. Never apologise for fees, but always ensure that you can justify them.

Most important of all – love your job! If you aren’t passionate about your field, then why should someone use you as their travel agent?

Thomas Cook collapse in focus at ABTA convention Mark Tanzer addresses the ABTA convention in Tokyo.

THE BREAKING news that Hays Travel would take over the retail stores left vacant by the collapse of Thomas Cook dominated conversations on the last day of the ABTA Travel Convention, held last week in Tokyo. With the story breaking just as the conference was drawing to a close, the news was met largely with optimism.

At the time of going to press, Hays Travel released a statement to confirm that 138 of the 555 former Thomas Cook branches had re-opened under the Hays banner. Additionally, 1,930 former Thomas Cook employees had accepted positions with the Sunderland-based company.

The company will continue to work with landlords across the UK to negotiate leases for the properties.

In his opening address to the convention, before the Hays announcement, Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive, told delegates that the collapse of Thomas Cook is a "major event" for the travel

industry, affecting not only Thomas Cook employees but also partners and suppliers.

Tanzer said that the collapse has raised questions about why the collapse happened and what it means for the wider industry. He described the bankruptcy as a "failure of corporate finance" with Thomas Cook incurring significant levels of debt, rather than a travel industry failure and was quick to dispel the idea that the package holiday sector is a "dinosaur".

He paid tribute to the CAA for their work in repatriating 150,000 stranded holidaymakers, saying they did "a terrific job".

"ABTA has been working around the clock to support inquiries (and) ABTA members are working hard to support their customers," Tanzer told the conference.

In regard to the future of package travel, Tanzer said it is important to ensure that funds are in place to look after customers but the end of Thomas Cook is "far from

signalling the demise of the package holiday". This was reflected in the results of the 2019 ABTA Holiday Habits survey which revealed that 64% of UK holidaymakers choose a readymade package, while 18% have booked a personalised package holiday in the past 12 months. "Best value option for the price" was cited as the main reason for booking a package holiday by 52%.

Tanzer told delegates he is "confident other companies will expand to fill the gaps” left by Thomas Cook's demise, a confidence which was borne out by the Hays news a few days later.

Derek Jones addressed the conference on behalf of the ABTA Lifeline charity, which is using the fundraising events at this year's convention to raise money for ABTA members affected by the Thomas Cook bankruptcy. The target is to raise £100,000 and at the time of writing, £42,000 had been pledged.

Agents updated on Brexit implications at Tokyo conference WITH THE October 31 Brexit deadline approaching and negotiations between the EU and UK continuing at the time of going to press, the issues surrounding the UK leaving the EU were discussed at the ABTA Travel Convention in Tokyo.

At the launch of the Holiday Habits survey, a slight drop in the number of people concerned about the impact of Brexit when booking a holiday was noted. The 2018 survey found that 54% of British holidaymakers were concerned about Brexit while this year's survey put the figure at 51%.

Victoria Bacon, ABTA's director of brand and business development, described the small drop as "unremarkable" although attitudes vary across the UK. As each Brexit deadline has approached, there has been a drop in holiday bookings and while this is happening again with the latest milestone looming, it can then lead to more availability after the deadline as passed, as happened in June this year after the March 31 deadline passed.

In his opening address to the conference, Mark Tanzer, ABTA’s chief executive, said that since the 2016 referendum, ABTA has remained "studiously neutral" on Brexit despite the emergence of extreme viewpoints where people think leaving the EU will either lead to "a brave new world [or] a postindustrial wasteland".

"We need to find a way back to the middle ground because that's where consumer confidence lies," Tanzer told delegates. However, he added a caveat to ABTA's Brexit neutrality, saying that the association is a vocal opponent of a no-deal Brexit because it would be "expensive and damaging to consumer confidence".

After Brexit, Tanzer said the travel industry will have to "return to a new normal" and build confidence in the industry so consumers have the confidence to book holidays.

ABTA Holiday Habits: More trips, less spending ABTA RELEASED its ninth annual Holiday Habits survey at The Travel Convention in Tokyo. The survey of 2,043 people was taken in July and respondents were asked about the holidays they had taken over the past 12 months as well as planned trips. The overwhelming trend was for Brits to take more holidays but on a tighter budget with 88% of people taking a holiday, the highest figure since 2011. However, good value is seen as paramount with people spending an average of £98 less on short overseas breaks compared to 2017 and £94 less on longer overseas holidays.

Nearly one in five (19%) are booking holidays later, rising to 32% among young families. Overall, people are either booking very early or very late to get the best value. Package holidays are popular with 51% taking at least one package holiday in the past year. Allinclusive holidays are up to 18%, compared to 15% in 2018.

For the year ahead, travel is a priority with 27% planning to spend more on their holiday and 70% planning a trip abroad in the next 12 months. Europe remains the most popular region with 57% planning a trip across the Channel and 56% planning a UK break, an upswing in staycations after a dip in 2018.

Among the European countries,

UK travellers are cost-conscious but expect more for their money.

Spain (38%), France (23%), Italy (17%) and Germany (15%) are the top continental choices. Greece comes in at 13% and Portugal at 11%. The rise in trips to Germany is attributed largely to diverse city breaks in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne, as well as experience-led and river cruise holidays rising in popularity.

Turkey, Tunisia, Bulgaria and Egypt are up from 2018, with the threat of terrorism perceived to be lower in the North African destinations than in previous years.

Long haul travel is increasing in popularity with 25% visiting Asia, up 10% from last year. There has been a 4% increase in trips to North America and a 14% increase for the Caribbean.

In the next 12 months, 70% of

holidaymakers are seeking to go abroad with 28% planning a trip to Spain, 19% to the USA and 16% to France.

Luxury travel is gaining in popularity but customers are becoming more demanding, expecting affordable prices. Four-star accommodation is proving to be the most popular with 55% having stayed in these hotels in the past year, while 20% have opted for five-star accommodation. Almost one in five (18%) have booked a personalised package holiday. Premium economy and higher classes of flights are popular at 37% and there are upselling opportunities for agents with people prepared to book "little luxuries", such as luggage delivery drop-offs, chauffeur-driven transfers and premium airport lounges.

Climate change warning from leading expert at conference “IT’S NOW or never.” That was the stark warning from Dr Gabrielle Walker, a strategist who helps businesses address issues of sustainability, when she spoke at the ABTA Travel Convention.

She said that the impact of climate change “is not subtle”, as it has led to conflict with refugees fleeing drought conditions, increase in wildfires, and the coral destroyed by bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef, as three highly visible examples.

“Every industry, every country, every individual is contributing to this,” she told delegates.

She described aviation as “the elephant in the room”, frequently left out of climate change plans along with shipping, but a major contributing factor in carbon emissions.

However, she added that there are airlines that set a good example in sustainability, such as KLM’s “flying responsibly” campaign which even urges customers to consider alternative forms of transport to flying wherever possible.

Developments in hydrogen-powered plans and the use of biofuels in aviation were cited as future technologies for reducing the carbon footprint of aviation.

In regard to carbon offsetting, Dr Walker said that companies should aim for the Gold Standard

(www.goldstandard.org) recommendations for their programmes to be meaningful and effective. She cited Hilton Hotels as an example of a company who is leading the way with its “Travel With Purpose” corporate responsibility programme.

Tim Williamson, customer director of Responsible Travel, echoed Dr Walker’s comments. “We need to act now ...

Aviation is the biggest challenge for our industry,” he said.

“The real problem with aviation is growth, at 4.5% per year, airlines feature on the lists of the EU’s most polluting companies. Even coal-fired power stations are getting their act together.”

“We all need to fly less now,” Williamson told delegates.

“There’s no way to sugar-coat this, to make it more palatable [but] we need to find a middle ground.”

With air passenger duty as a means to fund sustainable development in aviation, Williamson said the tax needs to be directed to “the front of the aircraft and private jets”, rather than penalising passengers in economy class.

He advised encouraging people to take longer holidays to “make their flight count”.

UNITED STORIES How travel transcends politics & the exciting campaigns agents should look out for…

THE INAUGURAL Brand USA Travel Week arrived at a time when interest in travel to the States is exceptionally high.

According to the USA’s National Travel & Tourism Office, 2018 saw America achieve its second highest ever year for visitation from the UK (4.7 million, a 4% increase year-on-year) and record arrival numbers from Ireland (531,000, 10% increase year-on-year); strong numbers that show some strong opportunities for agents and US destinations.

“When you start looking at those numbers, at how big this market is for us and how much more there is for us to grow; then Europeans, and primarily those from the UK, are great travellers” said Tom Garzilli, chief marketing officer for Brand USA, “they explore that much more of the country and because they want more of the ‘experience’ they're more likely to travel to drive Route 66 or go up and down the West Coast to really visit out all the places to be found along the way.”

Brand USA’s Travel Week – which brought US exhibitors together with key European buyers for one-to-one business sessions, educational seminars and consumer activations – was held in London last month and also proved an opportunity for the destination marketing organisation to announce its ‘One Europe’ strategy, with the continent now being approached as a single market.

With the issues surrounding Brexit still hanging over much of the industry, this approach makes for a strong show of

support both to airline partners and for the hundreds of thousands of seats that emanate from the UK to the US, half of which are filled by consumers from other parts of Europe, and the enablement of travel “to, through and beyond the gateways.” Sagely, Garzilli highlighted: “Travel transcends politics. Brits are still going to want to come to the US, Europeans will want to come to the US via Britain, and Americans are going to want to come here. We certainly did think about the semantics of calling our strategy that but we decided it was the

right wording because what we're saying is the continent of Europe is our biggest market, led of course by the UK, but that we want to go beyond that as well and get our partners further out and grow business for everybody.”

The USA Discovery Programme was voted as your Star E-Learning Platform at the 2019 Travel Bulletin Star Awards, an accolade that Garzilli described as “a great honour.” With agent training such an important element he added: “The

foundation of all that we do is around the travel trade; from education and building itineraries, helping them bring that consumer to a booking.” To this end, agents should watch this space for the announcement of Brand USA’s 2020 mega fam, the details of which will be coming out for Q4.

Agents should also keep an eye out for Visit The USA’s inspirational film ‘Into America’s Wild’, due out February 2020, which will follow trailblazers John Herrington, the first Native American astronaut, and Alaskan pilot Ariel Tweto, on a cross-country journey of the USA’s great outdoors. On the back of this, Brand USA's marketing activities will aim to encourage international travellers to embark on fulfilling and transformative American adventures of their own with campaigns designed to inspire exploration, achievement and self-discovery.

Garzilli concluded: “When we brought our 'United Stories' campaign to London the thing that we were most struck by was how many people were talking about their experiences visiting the USA and/or their aspirations for visiting. It wasn't just I want to see ‘this’ or ‘go here’, it was road trips and multiple experiences in one sightseeing journey.

What the US can offer is any and all of those experiences travellers might be looking for and it will make them want to come back to see more, time and again.”

A Study in Scarlet A NEW contemporary art centre named Ruby City will be opening in San Antonio, Texas this month.

BREAK THE ICE ‘Ice Breaker’ & ‘Iron Gwazi’ come to SeaWorld and Busch Gardens

SEAWORLD ORLANDO and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay have revealed details of two new attractions coming to the parks in 2020. It marks the first time in four years that both parks have launched new coasters in the same year.

A new legend will be surfacing at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay with the evolution of Iron Gwazi, North America’s tallest, fastest and steepest hybrid coaster in the world. Standing at 206ft. tall, it will feature a 91-degree drop and reach top speeds of 76mph during a journey that will include three inversions and 12 airtime hills.

Park president Stewart Clark said: “Iron Gwazi is the evolution of a classic wooden coaster into a modern icon. From the bones of the original Gwazi, a new legend rises, reaching taller heights and faster speeds, delivering the next-level thrills that our coaster

fans crave and expect from Busch Gardens.”

Also making its debut in spring 2020 will be SeaWorld Orlando’s first launch coaster: Ice Breaker. Named after the icy Arctic summits, Ice Breaker will feature four launches, both backwards and forwards, culminating in a reverse launch into the steepest beyond vertical drop in Florida – a 93ft. tall spike with 100-degree angle.

Located near the Wild Arctic Attraction, the ride’s theme is reflective of this area with a nod to Ice Breaker’s conservation partner, Alaska SeaLife Centre. Primarily dedicated to marine research, education and wildlife response, the Alaska SeaLife Centre mission matches closely to that of SeaWorld Orlando’s, and both will help educate riders about the Artic and its inhabitants.
