All About the

Mediterranean Islands E

very year, Post Office Travel Money releases a Holiday Costs Barometer, which is a guide to the most affordable places to holiday, based on a variety of items holidaymakers buy when they are in resort, such as a cup of coffee, a meal, suntan lotion or a glass of wine. This year, the survey found that UK visitors to the Mediterranean Islands will fork out up to 20% less than a year ago in some of the most popular destinations, which is good news for Britons and a brilliant fact to remember for agents selling the Mediterranean. It is also great to see how much the travel industry puts faith in island destinations such as Malta, with the Institute of Travel and Tourism holding its annual conference at the Hilton Malta earlier this month. It’s the second time in four years the hotel has hosted a major travel industry conference with the ABTA Convention taking place there in 2010. This just goes to show that Malta’s hard work of carving out a reputation as an excellent conference and incentive destination has really paid off, and as ITT chairman Steven Freudmann comments“the most successful conferences are those where the destination really wants us and Malta was delighted to host the ITT Conference 2014”. And as for the Greek Islands, the national tourist organisation is predicting a bumper year as it expects to welcome a record 18.5 million arrivals this year, which will hopefully equate to €13 billion euros in tourism revenue. The government has also decided to extend the opening hours of the country’s 33 most popular museums and archaeological sites from 8am-8pm, which is guaranteed to help boost the income from tourism. In this year’s All About the Mediterranean Islands Supplement, we are taking a close look at Malta, the Greek Islands, and for the first time, the Italian destinations of Sicily and Sardinia with some advice from the experts on the best places for family holidays and for those looking for something a little different out of season. These stunning islands have a lot to offer Brits looking for an alternative to the traditional Med holiday break, with Sicily having culture, food and an active volcano to attract enquiring minds, while Sardinia knows a thing or two about providing the perfect upmarket, beach holiday with fine food and wine, and a number Roman ruins to explore too. So, enjoy reading the supplement, and I hope it gives you lots of ideas on destinations and resorts to promote to your clients. Angela Cronin Supplements editor Travel Bulletin

Malta

High times From summer-sun escapes and mini breaks to long-stay winter holidays, Malta has something for everyone

A

s an island destination in the Mediterranean, Malta and sister islands Gozo and Comino have it all going on. From the attractions that appeal to the culture vultures – Malta itself has the greatest density of historic sights of any country including its Neolithic Temples that predate the Pyramids of Giza – to the islands’ unique gastronomy, spa offering, beaches, festivals (think Isle of MTV), and of course, the diving is suitable for all abilities, Malta has a plethora of holiday experiences just a short flight away from the UK. It’s also the perfect destination for families due to its short flight time, family-friendly hotels, safe beaches and its endless number of historical sites for young inquiring minds. And of course, there are theme parks aplenty which include the Mediterraneo Marine Park, Playmobil Fun Park and Popeye Village. And we haven’t even mentioned the movie trail. Over the next few pages, we feature some tips from the operators on where to stay with a few tips on reasons to visit this amazing destination.

For families Families heading to Malta are spoilt for choice when it comes to suitable accommodation to host parents and their offsprings, but Belleair recommends one hotel in particular for its affordability factor. The newly refurbished San Antonio Hotel and Spa is located right in the heart of Qawra, St Paul’s Bay and is within walking distance to the sandy beach, bars, restaurants, casino and the new National Aquarium. In resort, there is an animation programme incorporating various activities every day during the peak season, and there is also a kids’ club for five to 11-year-olds. As well as the main pool, there is a roof-deck pool and a private beach for hotel guests. There are also three restaurants to choose from and Le Marquis Spa which offers a whole plethora of treatments including a chocolate massage. How much? Belleair Holidays offers the San Antonio Hotel, from £3,199 for a family of four, representing a saving of £359. The price includes direct

This offer is valid for travel on 5 August 2014. To book: belleair.co.uk/agents For mums and dads who prefer a more rural experience from their holiday, Belleair suggests they try out the island of Gozo, and in particular a three-bedroom Bella Vista Farmhouse with a pool in Xaghra Village. The village square is a hive of activity in the evenings when all of the bars and restaurants come alive, and is a relaxing place to spend the evening after a day on one of the many beaches in Gozo. Close by to Xaghra Village are the famous megalithic prehistoric Ggantija Temples that date back to 3500BC. How much? Prices lead in at £4,387 for a family of four, representing a saving of £379 in total. To book: belleair.co.uk/agents Overlooking Malta’s largest sandy beach at Ghadira Bay in the north of Malta, Mercury Direct recommends the Seabank Resort and Spa for a family summer sun break. The all-inclusive resort has a packed programme of themed daily events, such as Aquarium Day, Olympic Day, Carnival Day, Pirate Day, Artist Day and Girls v Boys Day followed by a kids’ disco every evening at the Entertainment Dome. There is also a kids’ pool for the little ones to splash around in during the day. While the offsprings are kept entertained, the parents can make the most of the hotel’s facilities including the vast, lagoon-style pool area, or the indoor heated pool. There’s also the AquaMarine Spa and Fitness Centre which specialises in three-day spa journeys to help parents recharge their batteries. Alternatively, there is the mind and body wellness day packages too.

How much? Mercury Direct offers seven nights’ all-inclusive from £2,595 for two adults and two children. To book: mercurydirect.co.uk For divers Dive Worldwide has introduced learning-to-dive holidays off the tiny Maltese island of Comino. The island’s rugged coastline of sheer limestone cliffs, populated with deep caves that were frequented by pirates centuries ago make Comino an interesting island to visit. Also with the safe diving locations provided by the number of lagoons on the island means it’s a great place for children aged 12 or over to learn to dive. Comino is famous for its Blue Lagoon, which is popular with divers for its rich marine life but has also provided the backdrop for Hollywood films including Swept Away starring Madonna. Crystal Lagoon on the island is another popular site due to its location and almost perfect diving conditions. The sheltered site is shallow and features a 30-metre open tunnel and is a breeding ground for young fish including

barracuda, gobies and flounder. While the Lantern Point is home to large grouper and dentex. How much? Dive Worldwide offers seven nights’ B&B at the Comino Hotel from £1,169 per person based on two sharing including flights, transfers, Dive Pack including PSI Open Water course, tuition and equipment. reece has been through enormous upheaval since the beginning of the recession back in 2008. The Greek government-debt crisis was the central focus of the Eurozone crisis, which saw the Greek economy plunge into a sharp downturn, and Greek people take to the streets in protest at the crumbling state of the economy which had a huge impact on wages and the standard of living in the country. And despite filling lots of newspaper column inches and TV news broadcasts, concerns about the economy didn’t really register on UK travellers minds with our love affair with this amazing country not showing any signs of waning. And it looks like 2014 is shaping up to be a record year for Greek tourism, with a record 18.5 million arrivals and €13 billion euros in tourism revenue expected. More good news for visitors to Greece is that 33 of the country’s most popular museums and archaeological sites are set to extend their opening hours. From 1 April until the end of October, visitors will be able to visit from 8am until 8pm, seven days a week. Operators, such as Sunvil, have welcomed the move, stating that it will allow visitors greater flexibility and opportunity to experience the country’s top cultural sites, in a year when the region is expected to draw more than 18.5 million tourists, topping record arrivals in 2013. Dudley der Parthog, programme director at Sunvil Holidays, welcomed the news, saying “sightseeing is far more appealing when temperatures are lower and attractions less crowded, and the move will bolster our efforts to encourage shoulder season holidays”. Last year, according to official figures, Greece welcomed 17.8 million holidaymakers, of whom 12 million visited its museums and archaeological sites. The 33 sites that have been selected to offer extended hours this season account for 95 percent of those visits and include the Acropolis in Athens, Ancient Olympian the Peloponnese, Knossos in Crete, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina) and Akrotiri in Santorini. The release last month of blockbuster movie Two Faces of January, which was filmed at the Parthenon and the Palace of Knossos will also help to turn the spotlight on Greece’s historical attractions. Harry Kyrrillou, director of Planet Holidays

Legendary With Greece set to visitors this year, th the UK’s

says: “Greece has provided some memorable backdrops for films over the decades from The Guns of Navarone, Zorba the Greek, Never on Sunday - to more recent successes such as Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Mamma Mia! and Before Midnight. “The Two Faces of January looks set to inspire more travellers to combine a city stay in Athens with a cultural and beach stay in the southernmost of the Greek isles, Crete.” Families are being more adventurous with their Greek holiday choices too, often combining two or three destinations in their summer sun holiday. Planet Holidays’ Harry Kyrrillou says: “The most popular family hot spots in Greece with our family clients include Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Zante but also mainland Greece, Halkidiki and the Peloponnese. “Agents can easily encourage their clients to start off in Athens before heading off to their seaside resort on the mainland or on an island,” he adds. In this Greece feature, we speak to the experts to get some tips on where to send families this summer and next, as well as some ideas for clients who are looking for a little bit more from their holidays in Greece. We also have a focus on the stunning Cyclades island of Santorini. For families The Marbella Beach Hotel, Corfu has relaunched recently with a new identity. Now called Marbella Corfu, the luxury, 384suite property in the resort of Agios Ioannis has also completed a three-year renovation project, which has led the hotel to increase its focus on the family market.

The hotel now features new spacious family rooms with one bedroom and a sitting room with a double sofa bed separated by sliding doors, while the superior family rooms have the added bonus of a fully-furnished balcony. The hotel also has a new, purpose-built crèche and kids’ club with activities for children aged four to 12 including animation projects, a daily creativity programme and games on the beach, including picnics and parties. The Meli Creche Club has been created for infants aged four months to three years. While the kids are being entertained, parents can dive into the hotel’s hefty menu of spa treatments, check out the new Greek Taverna restaurant and the pool bar, which has been transformed into a spacious venue, offering guests the chance to chill out in front of a big screen. There’s also a subterranean entertainment venue, offering an expansive bar, DJ and live music. How much? Classic Collection Holidays offers seven nights’ all-inclusive or a family of four from £4,499 including flights and transfers. Its accommodation is boutique, its shops are achingly trendy and its bars are cutting edge, so don’t be surprised to be find yourself rubbing shoulders with an A-list celeb or two. However, while this may make you think that Mykonos will solely appeal to couples, who have money to spend, or backpackers on a budget, the island is very popular with families as it has so much to offer. Classic Collection recommends that families stay at the Santa Marina Resort and Villas in Mykonos which reopened last month, following a multi-million pound renovation to update all communal areas and introduce its new, destination beach restaurant and bar, Bayview. The Santa Marina has been a landmark

hotel on the island of Mykonos for 20 years. Located in the sheltered and discreet Ornos Bay, it is close to other well-known bays as well as Mykonos town. From June until mid September, the resort has a kids’ club with a programme of arts and crafts, beach games and movies as well as a fully equipped playground and children’s pool. When it comes to accommodation, there’s split level family seaview suites with the master bedroom downstairs and the second one upstairs with its own balcony and bathroom. With 17th-century caved houses turned into luxury suites, the Canaves Oia Hotel, perched on the cliffs of Oia, overlooking the Nea Kameni Island in Santorini certainly delivers a room with a view

Santorini The most romantic destination, the most photographed island, the most beautiful place in the world, the must-visit isle on most people’s bucket lists – you name the accolade, Santorini has no doubt won it over the years. And it’s easy to see why. A gem of an island in the middle of the Aegean sea world famous for its volcanic activity, its beautiful white and blue domed houses perched on the cliff face, Santorini has carved out a reputation as a high-class destination on the island-hopping route of the Cyclades. And the island appeals to all types of travellers, from the budget backpackers to the big spenders on the luxury cruise ships. Direct flights from the UK to Santorini also make the island an attractive and easily accessible short-break destination. So, what is there to see and do on the island? Sights to see Fira and Oia Located on the west side of the island overlooking the volcanic island of Nea Kameni island, the towns of Fira and Oia are a great place to start exploring Santorini. Fira, and Oia just a short taxi ride away, are visions of dramatic cliffs and stunning whitewashed buildings that hide a plethora of cobbled streets with shops and restaurants to explore. Santorini’s sunsets are legendary, and the many cafés that populate the town of Oia are a great place to watch the sun go down behind the horizon. Nea Kameni Island A visit to Santorini isn’t complete without taking the short boat ride across from Santorini to the volcanic island of Nea Kameni. It’s a great day trip for all the family too as it is guaranteed to feed the imaginations of young children as at the crater of the volcano, it is still possible to see volcanic gases pouring out of it as the volcano last erupted in 1956. The day trip also takes visitors to Palea Kameni where it is possible to swim in the hot springs, believed to have medicinal properties. Akrotiri Excavations Dubbed the Minoan Pompeii, Akrotiri is a Minoan Bronze Age settlement destroyed in the Theran eruption about 1627 BCE and buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of fine

frescoes and many objects and artworks. The settlement is believed to be the inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis. Lots of the guided Santorini day trips take in a visit to the excavations. Beaches The beaches of Santorini are famous the world over for their volcanic colour. Forget your white, sandy beaches, it’s all about red and black volcanic stone – and it really is an impressive sight. There are plenty to choose from all over the island, from Ammoudi in the north to the Red Beach in the south, close to Akrotiri. Where to stay? Greece specialist Cyplon Holidays features a selection of boutique hotels in Santorini. These include: The three-star Anemos Beach Lounge in the town of Fira with prices for seven nights’ B&B in September leading in at £815 per person including flights and transfers. The four-star Santo Miramare close to the black sandy beach of Perivolos on the southeast side of Santorini with prices from £1,055 per person for seven nights’ B&B in September including flights and private transfers. The five-star Relais & Chateaux property of Kirini Suites and Spa is perched 300 metres above sea level offering breathtaking views over the Aegean Sea. Seven nights B&B, including flights and private transfers start at £2,462 per person. A view of Sicily from Mount Etna

From lava to limon One famous for its active volcano, the other with a reputation as a hangout for A-list celebrities, the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia have plenty to offer holidaymakers looking to escape the more mass-market destinations in the Mediterranean

W

hile the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia are the biggest in the Mediterranean, they face stiff competition from traditional packageholiday favourites of Greece and Spain when it comes to attracting the UK market seeking sun, sea and sand breaks during the summer months. However, a survey by the Italian Tourist Board (ENIT) last year found that operators such as Inntravel and Cresta were seeing a significant increase in sales to Italy, with Sicily being one of the most requested destinations – and it’s easy to see why. Sicily has long been a crossroads of Mediterranean culture, and the island today is a rich fabric of Greek temples, Norman churches and Baroque palazzos. And that’s before we even mention the island’s iconic landmark that is the active, and temperamental volcano, Mount Etna. And then there’s the idyllic island of Sardinia, renowned for being a haunt of the rich, the famous and ex-Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s bunga-bunga parties. The Costa Smeralda has a lot to offer those who have expensive tastes with elite hotels, five-star beaches and Beverly Hills-type shops. However, if history is more your thing, then there are plenty of Carthaginian and Roman ruins, Pisan churches and Spanish Baroque buildings to explore. And of course, on both of these islands, there’s plenty of fine wine and exquisite food to enjoy.

Here in this feature, we speak to the Italian specialists to get their recommendations on the best holidays to suit your clients and their varying tastes. Sicily Family holiday For families looking to explore Sicily, Prestige recommends a two-centre break at Hotel Tourist in the resort of Cefalu on the north coast of the island with a stay at Rocce Azzurre on Aeolian island of Lipari. Nicky Shafe, marketing manager, Prestige Holidays, comments: “Simple but unpretentious, The Hotel Tourist is ideal for families. It’s family run and has good food, great service and a large outdoor swimming pool. It’s also just across the road from a long sandy beach. “Cefalu’s restaurants and bars are also a short walk along the seafront and its medieval town centre is also within easy reach. From here the capital of Palermo is easily accessible as is a day trip to the stunningly beautiful national park of Le Madonie. “The Hotel Rocce Azzurre in Lipari is another family-run hotel overlooking the waterfront, boasting lovely views of the coastline. The hotel is just a 10-minute stroll from the charming centre of Lipari with its shops and bars and has amazing outdoor terraces overlooking the sea. From here, families can enjoy an excursion to the volcano island of Stromboli to watch the lava flows.”

How much? Prestige Holidays features four nights’ B&B at Hotel Tourist and three nights’ B&B at Hotel Rocce Azzure from £849 per adult and £519 per child. The price includes hydrofoil crossings to Lipari, flights and transfers. To book: prestigeholidays.co.uk. For wine lovers Wine tours specialist Arblaster and Clarke has introduced a new seven-day Discover the Wines of Mount Etna itinerary. Describing the Etna region as the “next big thing” and one of the most exciting of Italian wine regions, with its own indigenous grape varieties; Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, this new tour visits the wine estates and local restaurants of the region, enjoying local cuisine with local wine. The tour also includes a stay at a five-star hotel owned by one of the most famous wine estates on Sicily on one of the islands of the Aeolian archipelago, 50 miles from Sicily. How much? Prices lead in at £2,475 per person and the tour departs on 21 September. On the move For visitors who want to see as much of Sicily in a short space of time, Insight Vacations has a nine-night Treasures of Sicily tour that starts in Pedara in the foothills of Mount Etna, with an excursion to the active volcano followed with an afternoon of wine tasting. On day three, the tour heads to Siracusa, an archaeological site which has a remarkable number of well-preserved Greek and Roman ruins, the most significant being the Greek theatre that dates back at least until the 5th century. Then it’s off to the jaw-droppingly beautiful hilltop town of Ragusa, where all of the buildings today date back to 1693, followed by a visit to the ruins of Selinunte, one of the largest archaelogical sites in the Med, with numerous temples, acropolis and agora. The tour also takes in the Zingaro Nature Reserve, Segesta, home to the ancient Greek temple of Doric, the city of Palermo, the fishing village of Cefalu and the town of Taormina. How much? Zenobia Week will celebrate everything that is great about the ship wreck and the diving spots around Cyprus

Best of the rest Here is a round-up of latest news from operators and tourist boards

Cyprus The Cyprus Tourism Organisation has launched a new scheme, the Cyprus Tourism Quality Label, which seeks to recognise excellent quality, both in established areas such as health and safety and hospitality, and ‘new’ areas, for example environmental sustainability and the support of local communities. Cyprus is the first destination in the world to set mandatory sustainability standards for hotels, which means every hotel operating in Cyprus must now take action to protect the environment and support their local community. The new minimum standards are part of a wider programme of reforms from the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) and the Travel Foundation to make Cyprus a leading destination for sustainable tourism. Because of the scheme, hotels in Cyprus will now be required to demonstrate sustainable business practices that will ultimately lead to cost savings and a more authentic Cypriot offering for their guests. Festivals Visitors to Cyprus this June are being encouraged to get “wrecked” as part of the island’s Zenobia Week festival. Zenobia is Cyprus’ best-known ship diving site. A Swedish built cargo ferry that capsized and sank off the coast of Cyprus in June 1980, the wreck offers a number of

opportunities to divers of all abilities, from a simple 16 metre dive along her starboard side to extremely advanced dives within the lower car deck and engine room. The Zenobia Week festival, which runs from 23-30 June, aims to raise awareness of the site to divers and non-divers, who will be able to enjoy free cruises in glass bottomed boats to the site, an underwater photography competition, an exhibition of artefacts from the wreck and art shows focusing on photography and painting associated with the sea. The organisers are also working with local dive schools to offer 20% discounts on trips and the chance to test out underwater scooters for free. Cyprus offers one of the longest diving seasons in the Mediterranean with year-round sunshine, warm sea temperatures ranging from 27 to 16 ºC and good underwater visibility. In early 2013, four large fishing vessels and a number a reef poles were scuttled off the coast of Cyprus as part of a €1.5m project to create five new marine parks, encouraging the growth and protection of marine life around Cyprus, and bringing the island’s wreck diving sites to 16.
