Southern & East Africa CONTENTS

W

elcome to this year’s edition of All About Southern and East Africa – your essential guide to selling exceptional and affordable holidays to Africa with its amazing wildlife, varied cultures, superb beaches and outstanding natural beauty. This year has started extremely well, with January and February sales of safari holidays hitting levels we haven’t seen since 2008. Customers wanting to see the abundant wildlife of Africa are once again booking rather than looking, as prices have come tumbling down over the recession. Our customers continue to be predominantly middle aged, but we are seeing a resurgence of honeymoon bookings as young couples seek out a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Remember a safari holiday continues to be aspirational something for the bucket list. This demand has been driven by extensive TV coverage, including Sir David Attenborough’s new Africa programme on BBC1 and Charley Boorman’s South African Adventures on Channel 5. So now is a great time to be promoting safari holidays. They range in price from inexpensive self-drive to top-end luxury, and are relatively easy to sell. And afterwards you will have some very satisfied customers. So don’t be scared to book a safari holiday in 2013. Remember, you can always call us and ask for help. Warm regards, Claire Farley Sales and marketing director 2by2 Holidays

What’s new With new tours, flights and safaris on offer, there are more opportunities than ever before to sell the marvellous destinations that make up Southern and East Africa

Cape Town Tourism's new online toolkit will equip agents to sell the destination to their clients

T

our operators and national tourist boards are usually grateful of any positive TV exposure their destinations receive. Madagascar reaped rewards from Sir David Attenborough’s three-part series on the country, and it seems operators that feature the countries that starred in his latest on-screen Africa escapades have too received an increase in enquiries from clients who feel compelled to follow in its footsteps. And with Charley Boorman’s South African Adventure on Channel 5 set to sprinkle the ‘I must go there’ magic dust for the ever-popular tourist destination, the countries that make up Southern and East Africa are looking forward to a busy 2013. We catch up with some of the movers and shakers to get the lowdown on what’s new for this year. South Africa South African Tourism has appointed Andrew Sharpe to the role of trade relations manager in the UK. Sharpe joins the organisation from Dubai Tourism, where he was trade sales manager for two years. As part of a two-person trade team, Sharpe will be jointly responsible for implementing the South African Tourism trade strategy for the UK by managing relationships with trade, negotiating joint marketing agreements and implementing educational programmes for the UK trade selling South Africa. Sharpe said that tourism arrival figures 4

are getting back to pre-World Cup levels with UK numbers showing a 5% increase from January to October last year on the same period in 2011, reaching a total of 350,000 UK visitors. “We are really keen to get out and about and work with operators that sell through the trade so that we can build up relationships with agents that genuinely want to sell South Africa. “Fam trips this year are high on our agenda and we are talking to operators to get them on board to increase the number they are doing,” he said. “Many agents don’t feel comfortable packaging up tours to South Africa so we are planning to help them out with suggested itineraries. Also, fam trips are the perfect way to help them sell the destination, which has so much to offer. Next year is a big one for South Africa. It is 20 years since the country’s first democratic elections and we are planning a number of events in the UK to celebrate that. Also, Cape Town is the World Design Capital next year, so again a big event for South Africa.” Cape Town Tourism The tourist board has launched an online toolkit aimed at helping agents sell holidays to the South African city. The Cape Town Toolkit www.capetown.travel/toolkit is aligned with the tourist board’s new brand campaign‚ 'You don’t need a holiday, you need Cape Town'. Toolkit users will be able to: download

and personalise campaign templates; access the image and video libraries; download the latest events calendar; search and download local maps; make use of articles for PR and media; and download suggested itineraries and activity information. Seychelles Tourist Office The Seychelles Tourist Office has launched a visitor pack, named seyGO, which comes with a tourist guide with ideas of where to go and what to do in Seychelles, a voucher for a free drink at a local bar or restaurant, a voucher for free entrance to a night club, plus discounts on boat excursions and a free map of the island. The guide is also backed up with a free mobile phone app. The tourist office has

Different strokes From spa breaks to photography safaris, there’s much more to selling Southern and East Africa than game drives and beach breaks

The Zambezi River Trail stops off at Chongwe river camp on its seven-day journey

S

afari is top of most people’s list when they talk about a holiday in Southern and East Africa. However, while this may be the objective of a first-timer to the region, what about repeat visitors who may want to try something a little different? Well, there’s a multitude of experiences to enjoy whether that’s rail journeys through the Namib desert or river safaris. Here’s an insight into what’s available this year. Rail journeys If your clients are cash rich but time poor and are keen to explore South Africa by spending some time in Cape Town before heading out on safari, then Great Rail Journeys suggests its 11-day Cape Town, Blue Train and Kruger itinerary. board at Selati Camp in the Sabi Sabi reserve, one night in Pretoria before boarding the Blue Train to Cape Town for three nights at the Steenberg Hotel. Prices start at £4,650 per person and include international flights, complimentary flights from Johannesburg to Sabi Sabi, all accommodation, an overnight on the Blue Train and one night’s free stay in Pretoria. City spa breaks Another holiday experience that travellers are increasingly associating with Southern and East Africa is the spa retreat, which is a perfect complement to an exhilirating – but sometimes gruelling – safari. So a visit to the 52-suite at the end of a break in South Africa before you catch your flight home is guaranteed to leave you feeling rejuvenated. Its USP is that Nelson Mandela found it relaxing enough to edit his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom there. So, with such good form, the Saxon vows to reduce stress, detox and delight guests with a number of treatments including its signature sound therapy. This Tibetan treatment uses eastern gongs, bells and bowls with the sound waves working on the chakras and the logical mind. The treatment takes place on a heated waterbed with built-in colour therapy enhancing the effectiveness of the treatment with the ultimate aim of leaving the guest feeling totally stress-free. Rates start at £652 per suite per couple per night and include one-75 minute elemental massage therapy and a couple’s rasul treatment per person per stay. River safaris Chongwe Safaris has teamed up with Tongabezi Safari Lodges to create a seven-night Zambezi River Trail. The tour starts at Victoria Falls and then heads downstream to the Zambezi Valley. Guests will have the chance to go on safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park or relax on the lodge balcony and watch the wildlife wander by. There will be the option to combine walking and driving safaris with extra activities which include canoeing and tiger fishing on the Zambezi and white-water rafting or a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls.

Sample product Southern and East Africa specialist 2by2 Holidays’ top recommendation for a spa break is a nine-night Cape Town and East Cape Safari holiday. The holiday starts in Cape Town with four days at the 12 Apostles, which has an award-winning spa, that embraces holistic principles and ancient practices in its spa treatment packages. Then it’s time to transfer to the Safari Lodge in the Amakhala Game Reserve for three days. Prices lead in at £1,845 per person and include flights and accommodation on a mixed board basis.

Photography safaris If you or your clients are keen photographers, then you may be thrilled to hear about Africa’s first permanent photo safari business operating in the Chobe National Park in Botswana. Pangolin Photo Safari was started by two keen photographic guides who saw that there was an increasing level of conflict on safari between photographers and non-photographers. In an attempt to resolve the issue Pangolin was born with the intention of providing a photo-centric safari operator catering to the specific needs of amateur and professional snappers alike. Pangolin operates every day of the year in the Chobe, which means that clients can join them any day, and be assured that the guides and drivers will endeavour to get them more photographic opportunities in a game drive than with a traditional operation. Pangolin has a custom-built photo boat with eight rotating camera seats and mountings and digital SLR cameras for every one of the seats. As well as the single photo safari activities, which fit neatly into any itinerary, Pangolin regularly runs photographic workshops with some of the region’s most talented photographic guides and instructors. The operator plans to run safaris in Namibia, Uganda, Kenya and various South African reserves in the near future. Prices start at £75 for a single morning or afternoon activity to £1,580 for a five-day Better Wildlife Photography course. 11

Safari

Game for an experience With the choice of safari options so wide and varied, whatever your client chooses, they are guaranteed to have the time of their lives

S

afari holidays have changed a great deal since the early days. While the three-day safari lodge is predominantly the most popular choice, more and more visitors to Africa are looking for different experiences. Whether that is to be more adventurous and go trekking in the forests of Rwanda in search of gorillas, or cruising the Okavango Delta; for those who feel like they want to do their bit for conservation, there are volunteer programmes to get involved in. Here is just a taster of what’s on the safari menu for 2013. On the move For a safari with a twist, operates luxury mobile safaris by 4x4 or by boat in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. A Matshwane safari is a highly mobile safari, where guests

have their own private vehicle and professional guide, cook and assistant. The same team stay with the group for the duration of the safari and are responsible for all the camp duties, cooking bush cuisine and keeping guests well entertained. So if you fancy sitting around a campfire, eating some bush grub with the distant roar of a lion and the beauty of the African night skies, then this could be the safari. It works well as a twin-centre too. Prices start at £1,802 for a 10-night adventure safari from Maun to Kasane This includes two nights’ camping in Moremi, game drives, boat cruise on the Okavango Delta, three nights’ camping in Khwai, three nights’ camping in Savuti, two nights’ camping in Chobe and a Chobe boat cruise. International flights are not included. Eco-friendly When it comes to green credentials, Campi ya Kanzi in the Chyulu Hills directly near Tsavo West National Park in Kenya has got the awards and certificates to prove that it knows what it’s talking about. It has a model for sustainable operations that includes, just to name a few, rainwater collection, electricity and heating drawn from more than 100 solar panels, black and grey water recycling, and much more. The lodge owners also pride themselve on their connection to community development through their links to the Masai Wilderness Conservation Trust, which does conservation work in the area and provides educational and health-care initiatives to the local Masai people, including an academy for gifted students, four medical dispensaries, and a health clinic in a local village. Another USP is its intimate setting. It only accommodates a maximum of 16 guests at a time in a wilderness that is 62 square miles. Guests can experience game drives or walks by a Masai guide and tracker and because Campi ya Kanzi is near national parks but not on them, guests can enjoy all the wildlife of the parks without any of the restrictions, for example, being allowed to get out of vehicles while on safari drives. Rates start at £474 per person per night in a luxury tented camp. Volunteering Sustainable tourism is creeping up the travel agenda every year and volunteer programmes are becoming a big part of the holiday experience in Africa. The Samara Wildlife Volunteer Programme in Great Karoo, South Africa is a good way to experience the magic of an African game reserve, while contributing to conservation efforts and community projects. The volunteers are directly involved in eradicating invasive plants, rehabilitating degraded land and collecting data for studies to better understand some of Africa’s most vulnerable species. In addition to this, the programme helps support Vuyani Safe Haven 14

in Graaff-Reinet, which is a home for abandoned children. Projects on the go include clearing alien invasive cacti species, a research project running to determine the effectiveness of herbicides for eradicating these cacti, soil erosion management techniques and planting spekboom, a plant that is efficient at taking up atmospheric carbon from greenhouse gas emissions and helps restore degraded land. Samara also carries out cheetah research, which gives volunteers the opportunity to have up close encounters with these incredible creatures. The distinctive vervet monkey population of Samara is also part of a research project. If you have clients interested in volunteering, then they can opt to take part in two, four, eight and 12-week programmes. This gives Samara staff enough time to provide all volunteers with relevant training and it takes a while to adjust to the bush and find their feet. Guests can choose to stay at one of the three lodges in Samara which include Karoo Lodge, Mountain Retreat and Manor House. Prices start at £711 for a two-week stay. Tailor-made touring Peregrine Reserve specialises in luxury escorted travel for small groups, with luxury accommodation, fine dining and private transportation; the three key elements which the operator says ensures their guests can experience a destination in style. With a maximum of 12 people, the operator tailor makes itineraries to cater for each private group’s needs. The tour is guided by local reserve leaders, which Peregrine Reserve says ensures the guests “are privy to experiences that stretch far beyond those provided by destination tourist boards”. The specialist has a nine-day Spirit of Kenya tour that starts off in Nairobi before heading out to visit the Chyulu Hills, for day and night safaris, a guided bush walk, on horseback or by wildlife tracking and a night under the stars on star beds at Ol Donyo Lodge. Meanwhile, the Explore South Africa itinerary visits Cape Town for a tour of the Victoria and Alfred waterfront, a cruise around the harbour, a cable car to the top of Table Mountain

The tour then crosses into Uganda for the next stop, which is Entebbe on the shores of Lake Victoria. After time exploring this scenic colonial town and visiting the orphaned chimp sanctuary on Ngamba Island, the itinerary heads west towards the mountains, stopping at the Lake Bunyoni for a night. The following day will take the group on a gorilla trek deep into the Bwindi Impenetrable forest – the highlight of the tour – before heading for the Queen Elizabeth National Park where there are options to do wildlife viewing and a chimpanzee trek. Tips on selling luxury safaris Liz Peacock, co-owner of Cheli & Peacock has six camps including Kitich Camp, Joy’s Camp, Lewa Safari Camp, Tortilis Camp and Elsa’s Kopje. Cheli & Peacock also manages the ground arrangements in Kenya for a number of UK tour operators. She offers some advice to agents on how to sell luxury. Make sure that safari camps and lodges you are booking follow ethical practices. Check to make sure they have: built in a sensitive zone; that they work with the local community; they have built the camp with ethical materials and followed sound environmental practice; and they have properly trained guides. The best high-end areas and lodges and camps are not always the most well known, as they don't get the mass-

market numbers travelling through them. This is actually an advantage to the high-end traveller so research well to make sure that you are booking clients into the ‘best’ rather than the most popular. Often the most well-known destinations have suffered from overcrowding. However the original reasons they became famous are often still valid, and the knowledgeable high end operator knows where to send their client to have the best experience of these areas. Staff knowledge is key - Fam trips are very important. High end clients need to talk to someone who really knows what they are talking about, and can sell beautiful areas with small luxury camps that have not hit the big time. 15

f you have clients who are looking to get married abroad and want something a little different, then what could be better than a walk down the aisle at a safari lodge far out in the African wilderness? That’s before you mention the exclusive gourmet dining out in the bush with your own personal chef, sleeping under the African night sky on star beds on raised platforms, or keeping an eye out for the big five from your bath tub on the decking of your luxury safari tent. Then there’s the private coastal retreats of the likes of Mozambique, Kenya and Zanzibar where guests feel like they are a universe away from their day-to-day lives. The choice is varied and exclusive, so here is a snapshot of what’s on offer. Mozambique It may not appear on the radar of many couples looking to get hitched abroad, but they would be very foolish to overlook Mozambique, which is home to many luxury properties that cater for weddings and honeymoons, in particular the Azura Benguerra, which is located in the idyllic island chain of the Bazaruto National Park. Setting the tone for things to come, couples are picked up at Vilcanculos Airport in a helicopter, and whisked up over miles of untouched turquoise ocean 16

dotted with white dhow-sails and golden sandbanks before they gently touch down at Azura. Weddings at Azura are all about barefoot matrimonial bliss with couples walking down the aisle on the hotel’s white sandy beach. After the ceremony, guests can start their life together in one of the retreat’s luxury villas that boast four-poster beds, the dedicated private butler service, and the private deck and pool. The staff at the hotel take special care to ensure every couple’s big day runs smoothly. Brides can be pampered and prepared at the Azura Spa, while the groom can enjoy his last vestiges of bachelorhood by heading out on a fishing boat with his best man and some cold beers. Wedding guests can be entertained by a whole load of other activities, ranging from sand-dune safaris to sunset dhow cruises. On the wedding day, once the open-air ceremony is over, the guests can feast on a spread of seafood fresh from the local fishermen’s nets. If couples stay five nights or more, the bride only pays 50%, they get a complimentary half-hour together in the spa, and a romantic candle-lit dinner on the beach. Imagine Travel offers a 10-

night wedding and honeymoon package which includes a blessing in a location chosen by the couple, an African massage, champagne, cake, a candlelit private beach dinner and a honeymoon day excursion to Pansy Island the following day, 10 nights’ all-inclusive accommodation in a beach villa, flights and transfers. Prices start at £10,085 per couple.

Tying the knot For couples looking to get married with the plains and savannahs providing the backdrop, 2by2 Holidays suggests a Kenya safari wedding and beach honeymoon. The 12-night holiday starts with two nights in the Severin Sea Lodge in Bamburi, Mombasa before transferring to the Severin Safari Camp in Tsavo National Park for two days of wedding preparations – with a few game drives thrown in – before the big day. Then it’s back to Mombasa for five days’ rest and relaxation at the Voyager Beach Resort. Prices start at £2,645 including flights and accommodation on a mixed board basis.

If getting married in a quaint stone church on a hill in central Kenya floats your boat, then take a look at Sabuk Lodge in Laikipia. As well as all the romantic dining in the bush options in the lead up to the wedding, Sabuk’s open-fronted stone cottages with star beds and bath tubs that overlook the Ewaso Nyiru river ensure the romance factor stays at an all-time high. Kilindi is a blend of Scandinavian minimalism and middle eastern Arabic cultures and each pavilion-style guest room is a private residence with a plunge pool and garden, serviced by a dedicated butler and with views over the Indian Ocean.

The romance factor As we all know, once the wedding ceremony and reception is all over, it’s all about the wedding night and where better to spend it than under the stars. The star beds at Loisaba Lodge, Laikipia in Kenya are located out in the wilderness about a 15 minute drive away from the main lodge. Each star bed is designed on a handcrafted wooden raised platform serving up great views of the surrounding plains. The star beds can be wheeled in and out from under the thatched roofs. Regional round-up

Congo Gorilla Tours has seen an increase in demand for its trekking holidays since the BBC’s Africa series

It’s time to turn our attention to the lesser-known countries that are looking to get their holiday offerings on the travel agenda Malawi Malawi Travel Marketing Consortium is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with an average 12% a annual increase in visitors since 2003. Nestled in the heart of south east Africa and landlocked between Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique, Malawi is one of Africa’s smallest countries. The consortium represents the country’s operators, accommodation providers and ground handlers. The group promotes the destination through its wildlife experiences, water sports, landscapes, culture, its much-famed lake known as ‘God’s Aquarium’ and its relaxed ‘bare foot’ luxury appeal. As a consequence, the number of tour operators selling Malawi has increased in recent years, and as well as African specialist operators, some of the larger tailor-made specialists such as Cox and Kings, Explore Worldwide and Audley Travel now feature Malawi within their itineraries. Over the last twelve months Malawi’s tourism industry has been boosted by significant investment from a number of sources. In the lower Shire Valley, the Majete Wildlife Reserve’s wildlife restocking programme has culminated with the re-introduction of predators, and in the east of the country around $850,000 is being invested into the Nhakotakota Wildlife Reserve. The first upmarket lodge has opened in Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve and rhino tracking is now available at Liwonde National Park, with the first new lodge to be built in 20 years opening this year. Horse-riding safaris are also being resumed in Nyika National Park. Air Botswana is starting daily flights between Lilongwe and Gaborone, which will open up new twin-centre holiday options between Malawi/Botswana. South Sudan Bahr el Jebel Safaris is offering visitors the chance to get away from the crowds and go on safari in south Sudan. Bahr el Jebel Safaris takes clients on safaris that follow the route of the White Nile that flows through northern Uganda, into south Sudan and onward to the Mediterranean Sea passing through Boma National Park, a scene of mass animal migration when the seasonal rains return. The operator uses vehicle ground transport only when necessary and relies on aircraft and river boats to transport guests to their lodges in Boma National Park. All About Southern & East Africa

An eight-day South Sudan Boma National Park and Cultural Safari leads in at £2,805 and includes six days’ safari in a 4x4 vehicle or on foot with accommodation in mobile tented camps. Congo Gorilla Tours Congo Gorilla Tours has seen an increase in demand for its gorilla tours through the Congo Basin following the screening of Sir David Attenborough’s BBC Africa programme. The specialist’s 14-day itinerary begins with a visit to the city of Brazzaville before embarking on the drive to the Lefini Gorilla Sanctuary in northern Congo. Visits to Nouabale-Ndoki National Park headquarters are included where guests will be based at Mondika Camp for two days for gorilla trekking before transferring to Mbeli Camp to observe wild gorillas. The journey continues via motorised canoe to the Central African Republic to visit Dzanga-Ndoki National Park for more gorilla trekking and cultural activities with the Ba'Aka. The itinerary culminates with a boat trip on the Oubangui river. Swaziland Swaziland Tourism has launched a new website as the landlocked southern African country looks to raise its profile with seasoned travellers and first-time safaris alike. About the size of Wales, Swaziland, which is also the birthplace of British actor Richard E Grant, is one of the smallest in the Southern Hemisphere. It has one of the most well-established and celebrated cultural heritages on the continent. One of only three remaining monarchies left in Africa, the Swazi nation is led by King Mswati III, who along with the rest of the ‘Dlamini’ royal family is the focal point of the country’s calendar of traditional festivities. The Kingdom has a wide range of ecological zones; the rugged mountainous terrain in the west has earned Swaziland the name 'Switzerland of Africa'. In contrast the landscape to the east is mainly bush savannah and open plains, but rises again with the Lebombo mountains. Swaziland’s largest protected area, the Hlane Royal National Park, is home to four of the big five; the lion, elephant, rhino and leopard. In the southeast lies unspoilt wilderness and is a haven to endangered species. The Mkhaya Game Reserve is one of the only places in Africa where visitors will spot both black and white rhino. A number of operators feature Swaziland including Cox and Kings, Tribes Travel and Sense Africa. 19
