My Story

Save Tree Save World, Think for the Nature

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful forest. There lived two trees, named Chintu and Pintu, who were brothers. Chintu and Pintu had many friends like the rabbit and his brothers, the group of monkeys, the family of birds, the Bunky bear and the wise old wolf. One day, all the friends were chatting. Suddenly Pintu saw a Woodcutter coming toward the forest. Pintu said “Hey look a Woodcutter is coming towards the forest! Run! Run!”chintu said to the animals. But no one ran. They said “You give us food, shelter, you give us fresh air to breathe. How can we leave you in danger and go?” Chintu and Pintu thanked them. ”OK you all hide behind us.” said the

two brother trees. So the monkeys and the birds hid inside the leaves of the tree and the other animals hid behind the tree. Woodcutter was very confused because there were many trees to cut. Suddenly he saw Chintu and Pintu, the huge trees. He said “Be ready to cut the trees.” The wise old wolf had already told his plan to animals. When the woodcutter came near the trees, the group of monkeys jumped on him and started imitating him, then the family of birds started pecking him, then the rabbit and his brothers started jumping around him and the Bunkey bear started roaring. When all animals were busy at their work, the wise old

wolf ran to the lion king. The wise old wolf told the king what he had to do. So they ran to where all the animals were. The king roared and the woodcutter ran for his life. Chintu and Pintu said “thank you”. Later the woodcutter thought “I never thought that trees give animals so many things like food, shelter. Birds build their nest on the trunk of plants etc and Trees add various importance to our lives further as and improve our living standard by providing valuable Oxygen gas and nourishing foods, Provides medicine, With Old trees within the living space become historic landmarks and supply of city pride, They help in conservation

by preventing evaporation.

water

Trees stop soil erosion and support wildlife, Trees are helpful supply dominant climate by managing the results of sun, rain and wind, Trees are terribly essential in equalization the ecosystem within the nature…” and decided NOT to CUT TREES. Friends this a message to not cut Trees and SAVE TREES and plant more trees because there is less forest on our land and it is becoming less and less only. So please save forest. Moral of the Story: Save Tree, Save Forest, Think for the Nature.

8 | ZooLife, Al Ain Zoo | June 2019

Habitat These monkeys live in tropical rainforests in Colombia, Venezuela, Paraguay and northern Argentina, preferring savannah forests and mangroves. Characteristics The Capuchin Monkey color is light brown to black and its shoulders are narrower than the rest of the body. It has a dark brown tail which wraps in a semi-spiral, and white spots on the body, with black fur like a hat on its head. It is the only monkey known to

twist its tail in a helical way. It has a typical length of 12-22 cm, and weighs 3 to 9 kg. Although these monkeys do not have a specific breeding season, most of their young are born at the end of the dry season and the beginning of the rainy season. The female gives birth to a single baby after a gestation period of 157-167 days, and the mother only takes care of her baby until it reaches puberty. Food These monkeys feed on fruits and small invertebrates and sometimes on lizards and birds.

Habitation Capuchin monkeys live in groups of 10 to 20 animals of both genders. The males control the group and perform the duties of defending its members against any threats. “Mercy deeper than love and sweeter and purer, where there is love, the sacrifice, the self-denial, where tolerance, where kindness and generosity, where all of us are able to love in the nature of human protoplasm and few of them are capable of compassion.

“What makes us proud of our nation is not the height of our buildings, the breadth of our streets, or the magnitude of our shopping malls, but rather the openness and tolerance of our nation. Our pride stems from the fact that we are a country where everyone thrives equally regardless of their differences, with true love and acceptance: a country where people live and work harmoniously, raising their children to enjoy a future free of the fear of extremism, intolerance or discrimination based on their race, color, religion, sector ethnicity."

Conservation

The Dama Gazelle is a beautiful, graceful, rare and endangered animal. It is descended from the western strain in the Sahara Desert. Hunting, grazing and urbanization have resulted in there being fewer than 300 of these gazelles in the world, and most are currently found only in zoos. In the past, Dama Gazelles were present throughout South Africa from east to west, but now they are located in just five remote

areas, and Al Ain Zoo is working with various conservation projects to protect them from extinction. Within the mission of Al Ain Zoo and its relentless efforts in conversation, we are making global efforts to breed them to ensure their survival and re-release them into the wild. Successful Efforts: • Our Zoo is the only around the world that includes two types of

Dama Gazelle: the Addra and the Mhorr, with 80 gazelles. • We conduct research to measure the fitness of newborns after species exchange, to monitor their safety and provide more options to protect them from extinction. • We monitor and supervise long-term studies about the Dama Gazelle in cooperation with the Sahara Conservation Foundation (SCF) within the largest remaining wild gathering in its natural habitat, the Republic of Niger. • We engage the community in this global trend to safeguard the gazelles, monitor hunting activities and encourage good practices to protect them. • In 2018, we hosted the second Global Workshop for Dama Gazelle Preservation to discuss plans and challenges in cooperation with our partners, the Species Survival Commission and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, with the support of the Sahara Conservation Foundation of Chad and the Al Bustan Zoological Center. • We contributed to the 2014 Safeguard Strategy in the first global protection workshop in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, where we participated in 2013.

Our Experts He has been associated with wildlife since his childhood and has a special chemistry with nature

Mohammed Yousef Al Faqeer “We need self-awareness to recognize that our daily behavior damages the environment and our future as well.”

Between the hills of Dana in Jordan and the rich orchards, he spent a highly energetic childhood performing tasks that were difficult for a young boy of six. He worked in verdant pastures and the harvest seasons and was entertained by playing chess. He was passionate about his love of the Arabic language, and influenced by the poet Hafez Ibrahim and poems of Ahmed Shawqi, deeply in love with his homeland. He is our colleague Mohammed Yousef Al Faqeer, Curator Ungulates in the Life Sciences Department, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Baghdad in the field of animal care, and a Master’s Degree from the University of Jordan in the same field. He began his career in 1999, when he worked for the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature in the field of environmental studies of nature reserves in Jordan, a country with a rich diversity of nature reserves. He then came to Al Ain Zoo in 2012 to start his new career. “There is no doubt that academic study has a profound impact on refining people’s knowledge and experiences, but it is impossible to ignore the natural chemistry that arises in rural people and their dealings with nature in all its components,” he says. “I inherited it from my ancestors.”

Mariam Al Ahbabi 14 | ZooLife, Al Ain Zoo | June 2019

What do you mean by the natural chemistry between human being, animal and plant?

“These three elements are essential components of the life cycle. For example, plants cannot be renewed without being nurtured by animals, and without predation of animals for each other and insects. Without the integration of these elements, many species can become randomly extinct, which constitutes a major imbalance in animal and plant diversity. Human beings are also an essential component of the environment and play a major role in preserving this diversity through the use of mind and awareness given by God, and through the study of these species and ways of preserving nature and its wealth. There is a special relationship between the people of the countryside and the animals. They know when to grieve and when to rejoice, how to be influenced by the personality of their patron.” Tell us your thoughts on Al Ain Zoo. “I consider myself lucky because I still live within that amazing biodiversity. I work in one of the world’s most prestigious Zoos, which includes high-level experiences and provides

community and institutional knowledge, both generic and specialized. We are all proud of this qualitative development achieved by Al Ain Zoo for everyone who participated in it. We are growing to become a global reference for wildlife conservation programs and biodiversity conservation.” Do you think that society is aware of its responsibility of the wildlife and nature conservation? “Unfortunately, we need to promote environmental awareness. Some people may not realize that everyday behavior can cause long-term damage to the environment and to their own future, while there are other very simple actions that can save lives on the ground such as switching off electrical appliances if they are not used, only dumping waste in its specific places or closing the faucets to stop fresh water flowing in vain. They are simple things that have a profound effect in reality. You do not know the value of a person except by the impact he or she leaves.” With all your passion for wildlife, do you see your children and

family share it? “My children are free to determine their scientific and professional destiny. There is a saying I heard from my father, that I always remember: “Certificates don’t make a human being, it is the human being who makes it”. So I will do my best to raise them on virtues and good deeds and let them make their way in life and make their own success.” Tell us about your love of the Arabic language, and your skills in chess. “One of the most beautiful things I have ever read is Hafez Ibrahim’s poem that describes how the Arabic language became strange among its people, as well as Ahmed Shawki’s wonderful poem, “Two Birds in Hijaz”, in which the two birds presented an example of patriotism. As for the chess, it has been a hobby of mine since childhood, a sport known to stimulate the mind, and I think that humans should give the mind and body special attention so that we do not weigh heavily on the concerns of civil life.
