Park-and-Ride: Relief is coming to the Far North Side by Letty Fuentes

Earth Day is April 22, 2014 and it is a day where the world shows their support to protect the environment. Speaking of Earth Day and protecting the environment, the ground has been broken for the transit facility on U.S. 281 that once operational will bring about many benefits, one of them being improved air quality for our city. On February 24, 2014, VIA Metropolitan Transit broke ground for a new parkand-ride facility that will be built on the corner of U.S. 281 and Stone Oak Parkway. Phase one expected to begin service in 2015 will feature a comfortable waiting area, bicycle racks, appropriate lighting, and real-time bus arrival information. VIA’s hybrid electric buses will have comfortable seating, ample storage, and free WiFi technology. Phase two includes working with the Texas Department of Transportation for potential transit priority lanes and expansion of U.S. 281. The U.S. 281 Park & Ride aims to improve mobility between the Far North Side and the City’s Central Business District by reducing traffic congestion, improving travel times, improving air quality, and stimulating the growth of the economy. The U.S. 281 North Park & Ride plan is part of a larger 5-year project called SmartMove. SmartMove was created by VIA Metropolitan Transit, local and national transportation firms, city officials and the San Antonio community. The larger plan includes the construction of three transit centers, a park-and-ride facility, improved downtown patron amenities, and a downtown modern streetcar project.

When one thinks about the larger vision of SmartMove and the problems it aims to solve it looks promising and exciting. In addition to doing our part to protect the environment by using the park-and-ride to reduce our carbon footprint, we the residents of the Far North Side would definitely have improved mobility and therefore improved quality of life with greater accessibility to the places where we work, live, and have fun.
