Background ABOUT The Designer

FUENTE DE LOS AMANTES

CASA GILARDI

Luis Barragan was an architect and engineer born in 1902 in Mexico, and died in 1988 in Mexico. He graduated in 1923 from Escuela Libre de Ingenieros in Guadalajara, educated as an engineer. The interest in architecture bloomed from his travels after graduation, where he went to Spain, France, and eventually other parts in Europe. During these travels, he was influenced by Ferdinard Bac, a German-French writer and landscape architect, Jose Clemente Orozco, an exiled Mexican political mural painter, and Le Corbusier, a Swiss-French architect. In addition to these, other influences included his friends, family, and Mexican Architecture and vivid colors that were used. Doing this, he was able to create his own experience of Mexican International Style and made the user of the space feel and experience it in a phenomenal and extraordinary way. I would like to think that the way natural light hit these spaces and colors were the magical aspect of what captivated his attention. He wanted Mexican Architecture to stand out among other works and styles at a contemporary time. < [Other noticeable work] Pg 6

BARRAGAN HOUSE AND STUDIO At first, from the façade of the building, I opinionate that it is not so interesting as it’s, for the most part plain. Based on the color from the outside, it seems to not have been kept up much, or at least the color is a bit dull. I would say, however, the real magic of design, color, and architecture are emergent on the inside. In this case one can relate the idea that Luis Barragan really thought about the space and how the dweller inside would feel; being him. One of the features that really stands out for me are the inclusion of natural light penetrating into a space and hitting the walls or other objects in the room. From different readings, the house, except one room, is designed to not need artificial lighting during the day. I like to pick at this point of light because, in combination to color, I think that this light is able to bounce off the colors used and produce a great radiance of sight. Weather the color of the wall is a bright purple on plaster, or a general white tone, the light is stretched through the space because of the colors . These colors actually can play a role in the look and feel of the time period. Being that the style is very “Mexican” like, it has a lot of relation to other contemporary works of the time. On the right, we can see some color chips that were taken with the Photoshop Eye Drop tool, to really get a sense of some individual colors that were used. Not in any specific order, I noticed that most of the colors are really natural, while the purple tones can also be considered natural too. I believe these colors have the potential to play off of each other.

Pg 7

BARRAGAN HOUSE AND STUDIO (continued)

To the left, we see another part of an exterior shot, and it’s very different from the actual façade of the residence. The bright colors used are what makes Luis Barragan, and all of his other projects stand out as his own style. The usage of these colors, to reiterate, have a very strong Mexican influence along with its texture and material usage.

“Serenity. Serenity is the great and true antidote against anguish and fear, and today, more that ever, it is the architect’s duty to make of it a permanent guest in the home, no matter how sumptuous or how humble. Throughout my work I have always strived to achieve serenity, but one must be on guard to not destroy it by the use of an indiscriminate palette.” -Luis Barragan “I underline the study of color above all.” -Luis Barragan By these two quotes, I start really trying to put myself into the space, and perhaps think how would I feel if I was sitting at a desk, working on a project or even having breakfast and how an ordinary life can be affected by the color around me. I see some type of serenity being composed by the brightness in these pictures (and the ones prior this slide, and after this slide). By the color chips on the left, I see a good mix of natural colors in addition to warm colors (which can heavily be reminiscent to the same color of adobe bricks (materials that are used in this region of the world). Pg 8

BARRAGAN HOUSE AND STUDIO (continued) In these sets of pictures, I decided to put them together because of the use of the color yellow and its different tones which run into the browns. I think these particular spaces play the most with the light because of the uses that these spaces provide. It seems that these rooms are on a higher level that the previously talked about. The spaces open up immensely and make the spaces seem bigger. This came into my mind when I, by mistake, made these images into a grayscale (or black and white image). I really saw what these colors offered to the space and how it can change the perception of space. I like to believe that if a person in space was performing some type of task, and it was painted differently, the user would in turn have a different feeling and perform their task differently. Although currently the house is being used as a museum, with most of the original furniture and items, one would never really know it was such. By the techniques used, it could be said that these spaces were in fact ahead of their time because it looks as this could have been built yesterday and still compete with other styles going on now. The impact of color, it is what makes or breaks these spaces. Without the colors, there is not life in this architecture and it does not have its identity.

Las Arboledas

FUENTE DE LOS AMANTES

In Summary‌ Because I was able to research this project and the architect, I was also able to look at his other works and how they all in common played with color and natural light. I choose this particular work because right away from the image that was presented, I knew I had seen something like this. By the time I read who the architect was and what work it was, I realized that the work I was familiar with was in fact another one of his works. Considering that Luis Barragan has his unique style, most if not all of his works play with similar color pallets that are related to the Mexican style. The colors are very welcoming of the light, and allow it to go further and stretch into unlit areas. In all his works that I was able to look at along with the one that was asked to research about, I saw a huge gradient of just one color telling me that this these spaces and scenes can transform in matter of minutes just by the sun.

I personally like these bright colors because they speak words, a make you feel. I would like to think that they can transport you to another realm, that although they are very solid, they are still in a position to make you think these are paintings among our world.

SCOTT PILGRAM Vs. THE WORLD

ALAN CAMPOS Color + Environment _ FILM ANALYSIS_M.4

Pg 13

FILM SUMMARY The movie is about a young musician, years after high school, that has to fight in a series of battles with his girlfriend’s exes in order to stay in the relationship. It has a video game and comic book feel to it, and its set to be a funny and dorky film. The movie itself took me back to when I was in high school (at the time of the movie’s release) and how I compare it to now (since I’m the same age as the protagonist of the movie). Over all the movie follows a specific set of steps that show progression – as it is very similar to a video game. Color played a huge part in the presentation of the film. (Let alone with techniques that are used in comic books and video games, both completely different). I think that the color usage was to set scenes, change moods, and change events that are going on. For instance, before some fights, there would be a drastic change from warm to cool colors and vice versa. This would exchange the intensity of the scene (usually from funny and non-serious, to very serious and deadly) and as well when the protagonist would “power up.” Most other scenes tended to stay with a lot of cool colors. I noticed the used of white (from the snow/winter in Canada) and the black, with the night time scenes which were a lot. Most of the colors would stand out dominantly because of this. One example would be Ramona’s hair during a lot of the scenes plus the addition of her color of hair changing often. I learned that color really can set a scene from being intense to actually dulling it out, and really putting prominence to actions and thoughts of the viewer. To some extent, it was also kind of an indicator of how to feel towards a character and their thoughts.

SCENE ANALYSIS

DELETE this image and Insert image of the scene.

This scene, is the final scene of the film. Being that it is the last thing that I remember about the film, and being that it is so prominent to the story I thought I would talk about it first. In this scene, after everything the couple went through, you are in some way introduced into a neutral, soften emotion. Like the calm after the storm. Its dark (night time) with of course the only color in the shot being Ramona’s green hair and somewhat bluish lights on the background. Everything else is either black and white, or a vague color that doesn’t stand out such as the tan color of the skin which is relatively closer to white. From my understanding, this part of the scene is almost a still, thoughtful, and a reconcile BLUES type of emotion. When looking at Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotion, one can see the space in between the green and the blue, hinting to the emotion of GREENS surprise and pensive. Later in that very scene, when the camera pans up, hues of red and pink start to emerge from what was black and other cool REDS tones. I guess by this color I can most relate it to anticipation and content.

COLOR PALETTE

Pg 16

SCENE ANALYSIS In this scene in which Scott Pilgrim is fighting the boss of the film, Gideon, we can see a few seconds of the screen turning red. At this very moment is when Scott lunges at the opponent in some sort of rage. Relating this back to the Plutchik Wheel of Emotion, this strictly falls into the category of rage and anger. For the most part no other color can be seen except the obvious tan (for skin) and black and white; the scene is pretty much red. This happens on a few instances within the movie as well, of which you can see Scott’s emotions take over by the usage of tones and colors. This scene takes place indoors, so most of it is strictly done by artificial lighting. All the colors and hues are flashy and REDS predominantly done by red. I believe the filmmaker wanted to make the audience feel mad, in support of the main character as he should win the fight. We see this in both instances of the scene (within the film, Scott has PURPLES (closer a second chance at redemption). to red) Even the word that is used in this very scene is red.

COLOR PALETTE Pg 17

SCENE ANALYSIS In this scene, Scott Pilgrim and his band tackle on a duo DJ’s formed by two brothers. During this scene, I suppose with the music they play, they are able to release two dragons and a gorilla looking creature. The usage of colors here is predominantly blues (a lot of cool colors). From the looks of it, most of these blue spectacles have some liquid look to them, and also electrical aspect to them. From these colors I take a very cold stance, as if the opponents have no care for what they do and no remorse. In the scene, you can as well see an audience, of which are mesmerized by the show and bright lights. These colors show energy

YELLOWS (gold)

BLUES

These colors show energy (of course with the music as well in the background) and try to depict how the fights must feel as you only have one chance to win and you are trying your best. To some extent, it expresses intensity within the participants. This in turn, is kind of different than Plutchik’s wheel of emotion depicts.

COLOR PALETTE Pg 18

CONCLUSION -RENTED ON YOUTUBE -PHOTOSHOP WAS USED FOR COLOR PALLETES Over all, I enjoyed analyzing a film for its use of colors and tones. In the past I have analyzed films for its usage of symbolism, lighting, and development, but never to this level. This film, aside from its great story, comedy, and action, it uses color really well and it takes me back to comic books and video games, both of which are huge interests of mine. The colors are so solid, and when contrasted on a black or white background, the colors show even more. I’m glad I chose this film to look at, as this was on my bucket list for years, and there were other films on this list that I have already seen, but never focusing on the color.

ALAN CAMPOS Color + Emphasis _ RETAIL ANALYSIS_M.8

Pg 41

•

Disclaimer: I honestly tried to make it to Lincoln Road to use some of the retail stores there, but I could not. I did however, go to Dolphin Mall and asked around if I could take pictures for this class. I found a few stores, that I would like to talk about here. These two stores include Fossil (which I was able to get some insight from the manager and her outlook of the color and concept designs), and a T-Mobile Store within the mall as well.

•

I might also include other stores that I was not welcomed to take pictures in, but I was allowed to take pictures from the outside. These can be shown upon request from my visit to the store.

Pg 42

When speaking about the hue usage within this store, we can look at the different types of brown around the store. I can infer that each different item, has its own color. For example the showcasing and counters have a lighter hue of brown when compared to the color of the brown used in the shelves mid store. The brown used in the framing of the shelves on the walls is the same color as the shelves mid store. Along with these three pictures and other slides, I also took a look at the textures of the different colors. For instance, on the black ceiling, a grill type of material was used. It does not reflect any light at all. I later compared this to the black floor which was smooth looking and reflected a lot of light. It kind of sandwiched the items being sold.

Pg 43

What I noticed with this specific space was there was no specific focal point with the color that I noticed with a few other stores. (This include a Nike store in which there was a big red wall behind the cash register) I think with this space they were going for a neutral color that of which matched the elegance of the jewelry and bags being sold there.

Pg 44

Looking at the color wheel in reference to contrast of hue and value, they for the most part do not use any other color opposite in the color wheel of brown, or tan. In these images I can compare the color of the ceiling and floor with the color of the shelves. This comparison can make the items on the shelves pop out. We also see the multiple shades of the brown family. The dark brown frames the white shelves. And around that is the color of the walls.

Pg 45

Final Thoughts of This Store

As I was leaving the store and finalizing the pictures that I was taking, I was able to get insight about how some workers (especially the manager) about how they felt about the color and design. For the most part the manager highly disliked the scheme that the current store had. She also showed me concept designs that was primarily all white in order to focus on the product. She also disliked that design too. She said that the current pallet did not say anything and it was a drag working there (when speaking about design). As for the another employee that was working there, he said he was happy with the colors that were there but he didn’t like the new scheme that was being proposed for other stores around the country.

Pg 46

T-Mobile Store This store really drew me in because of the usage of L.E.D. lighting. The color that was used was because of the company color, but it does the job. The emphasis is on this color, that of which highlights the products of the store. The pink light starts strong and defuses; in essence it is kind of like a boundary around pictures. For example:

Pg 47

It highlights and makes the product stand. Maybe the color and texture of flooring can be different.

COLOR + RENDERING

I looked up (in association): Gold: illumination, wisdom, health Blue: depth, stability, wisdom, loyalty Black: power, fear, strength, authority By Google Searches, and websites that came into agreement, I found that these colors had multiple associations.

Pg 49

The image and color palette was one of the few that stood out to me because of the royalty idea that I associate it with when referring back to some video games and films about kings, queen, and fantasy stories. I felt like these colors just made a great combination and I could have started to imagine them together. I also thought, by looking at the white spaces within the image, that white could perhaps be included into the mix. What space would not look good with some white. These colors, other that the royalty aspect I see, are the school colors of F.I.U. their logo and mascot. Color + Balance

COLOR SCHEME This color scheme has some two types of hues, for two different types of base colors. The gold and blues are opposite from each other, in the relation to the wheel, meaning that they will balance each other pretty well from each other. Looking at this, I get a feeling that perhaps the darker gold or darker blue can be the dominant, or secondary to the specific space, while the lighter shades of those color, with the inclusion of black and perhaps white, would be accents, just to enhance the space and help the other hues pop out.

Pg 50

Pg 51

What I experienced doing this rendering is that it is very difficult to find the right balance and there will be a lot of trial and error before you get something decent and even then there might be a better combination of colors. The pallets that I choose here were for reasons that I already specified, but after playing a bit more with them, I feel like these colors and not really made for something residential (in my opinion). At the end, I really like that fact that I was able to experiment with materials as I am not used to doing this type of Photoshop renderings. [For studio I bring in my 3D model into a program and apply the materials in their library] And then on Photoshop I just touch it up slightly. I really learned that there has to be a lot of balance implemented in the room for the it to work and be pleasing for the dweller inside.

PALLETTE

Quotes from different sections of the official Marcel Wanders Interiors website based on this project:

“The Mondrian South Beach (Morgans Hotel Group) realized at Biscayne Bay in Miami Beach, also known as the Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, is a true modern fantasy. Chic and dramatic living spaces are furnished with original bespoke pieces…” “…where the light games of the sky gets part of the frame.” Most of the colors and textures from my understanding have a lot of purpose because of the light usage that is being brought into these spaces and that are bouncing and reflecting of the items. In the case of color and line, I like to believe that all the curves that are being used are somewhat leading you up to the next places. Such as the curvature of the stairs, that make your eye wonder up the next floor (and thus making you move there eventually). Or for instance the curvature of the columns which make you curious as to look around them since it’s “never ending” to the eye. In the case of color and shape, referring again to the curvature and how the colors make the space feel, we can see how the light bounces of that. It can represent fluid movement, not static, and enables the eye to travel around freely. When thinking of a circle (as a generic shape with one never-ending curve), it offers a calming softness. This plus the integration of the soft textures that are provided through out every inch.

PALLETTE

To continue with textures, we see a lot of smooth surfaces because of their glossiness (presented in the images as well as in real life). In reference to both main pictures that i have presented here, the main grand stair case and the reception desk have the same type of material of which when you put your hands on them you feel it the same. Since it’s a different material and color than most of the other things in these spaces, they have a large emphasis to make them stand out. We also see the same, or if not, a very similar pattern through out the floor, hand rails, and some wall finishes. The interesting part is that it is done with different materials. For instance, when comparing the floor patterns (pictured on the bottom right) and the pattern seen on the hand rail/guard rail by the stairs, the white can be done with void spaces, allowing the user to look through onto another color in the background. The black is created by a solid piece.

There is much contrast in the usage of colors and shades. Black and white seem to hold most of it together, with the addition of splashes of gold and brown. What ever is not black or white jumps out to you. (When looking at what others pictures people have posted about this place, I saw that a lot of them were about what was brown and gold. I was invited to take a tour and see some of the rooms, that of which does share a decent amount of similarities with the lobby itself.

COLOR + VARIETY _ HOSPITALITY

I liked this lobby and hotel. Honestly I have never heard of it or even really seen it until I went for this project. I saw and took in there was a lot of play with natural light. I also saw that the grand spaces with double heights and materials brought modern elegance to the space. With the implementation of light and curves, light defuses well and bounces around. There is not that much jaggedness to the shapes, so it does not force anything to the eye. I liked this project to look at as many hotels try to do the same thing and heir experience interior designers to understand the space as an individual.

ANALYSIS

From analyzing these pictures, that of which all include the hint of purple, I noticed that each space is divided by the use of a different color pallet, or pattern. For instance, as soon as you come in, you are greeted with the company logo along with two purple chairs. I would like to say that the division of space occurs by the change in carpet color, while still connecting and transitioning with the exposed ceiling. This is while I placed that picture next to “line.” The purple chairs as well give a certain focal point to that little space of the entrance. In the next picture under “shape,” they are sticking to the idea that the different textures or colors on the floor divide up the spaces within the office. Apart from that, the shapes are found in the seating and chairs. Not only are they extremely linear and have 90 degree angels, it is one of the three things highlighted by the purple. The purple on the ceiling above the seats set up that space.

Under “texture,” I took a note of the center piece of the space. Although not purple, it is kind of like the focal point of the space. The purple on the rug helps define the space lines and give something for the gray sofa to sit on. Under “pattern,” we see the graphics used on this wall, and we also see some different pattern on the glass door that keeps up with the wall just with a different color.

ANALYSIS

In these next set of pictures, we see the inclusion of the color blue, of which the purple is missing. The blue in a sense takes the place of the purple. (We also see the inclusion of brick, and wood like in the previous pictures). In the picture under “line,” I took a note of the furniture that is placed in the room. Rather than using line to take you somewhere, I think it makes the space softer, and thus more comfortable. The blue is placed on the rug, dividing that that space from its surroundings.

Pg 61

line line

shape

Under the “shape” category, I as well, placed it for the furniture that is being used there. Kind of like the previous slide, it uses a lot of 90 degrees for the furniture. The blue again is on the floor. In the picture under “texture,” I again took a look at this furniture, because it used a different color texture than anything else in the office (from what I saw). This time the blue is still dividing the space, but it is breaking up the space. For “pattern,” I focused on the carpet, that like the first two pictures, it literally has the same patterns with the sharp edges. If analyzed closely, it connects the outside to the inside of the office space. (The glass obviously splits the space up, but I believe that is more for noise and privacy). The colored rug would ultimately divide the space alone even without the glass.

ANALYSIS

DISCUSSION | ANALYSIS In this slide, rather than just focus on one specific color like blue and purple, (since some of these spaces are just from a different angle) I’ll take a closer look at the elements that make the space with particular materials. Under “line” we see lines that make up a onepoint perspective image. This is done by the edges of either spaces or geometric shapes placed in the room like the island. We see again that there is one space, highlighted by the purple, and then we see another space that is sandwiched by the use of brown / wood. We still see a lot of transitional elements on the ceiling.

Under “shape” we see the relationship between the round tables and the round lighting fixture. Although both very different spaces made up with the use of color, these circles tie both together. The color of chairs can be related back to the counter along with the walls of the small room.

line line

texture

In “texture” I focused on the partition that has holes. It seems like there could still be a relationship between both rooms, but it is divided and makes the space a lot larger. For “pattern” it is again like two slides previous, which are the dots on the glass door. Perhaps this can be related back to the other glass door depending on the position of that room. The interesting thing about these white dots is that they float over the wall behind.

From looking at these pictures, I would like to say that admire the space as it is. It seems to be a comfortable work environment due to the colors and furniture used. To add to that idea, the continuity and transitions between the spaces make it seem larger but well integrated and relatable. This is an office I would like to visit one day, as to see how it truly feels. The space seems to have everyone communicating so well that all their tasks are at an arms reach from getting done. COLOR + CULTURE My culture comes from Central America. More specifically half of it comes from the country of Guatemala; being that both my parents are from different countries. I have chosen as well to learn about the culture and country of Scotland in Europe I picked Scotland for two reasons. The first was because of the colors of the flag being the same as Guatemala’s. The second reason is because from films and pictures I have always wanted to visit this place for its people and scenery. Pg 64

When looking at the flag of Guatemala, it shouts a different color pallet different from that of what a lot of the cultural colors used in festivals and traditional clothing. When looking at the flag alone, the blue stands for the two oceans that surround the land and the sky that is over the land. White stand for the peace and purity, with of course the Coat of Arms in the center. Although the flag has a set of colors, the people and its architecture scream out another thing. It is more traditional of which is somewhat of a brand to Central America as a whole. In this case, the bright colors found everywhere in the society “are a natural extension of their whole cultural attitude of freedom and taking chances. “ This is all done with natural and classic tones.

Guatemala Guatemala sits in Central America, which is bordered by Mexico, Belize, El Salvador (my other half), and Honduras. It has access to both seas. Before Spanish inquisition during the early 16th century, it was heavily populated with Mayan and Mayan descents. By 1821, the country became independent and it went on from there. Like many of the other countries in that area of the world, it takes a lot of pride in its heritage. The capital of Guatemala is Guatemala City, and the country has a population of about 12.7 million people, making it one of the largest countries in Central America. The religions in the coutry include Roman Catholics, Protestants, and indigenous Mayan believes. As for myself, I have visited this great country and have noticed a few things with color and architecture, and it is mostly in centralized locations. For example, a city called Antigua has a lot of historical buildings dating back 100’s of years. It is very traditional, and some of the architecture there is colorful with bright tones (much like Luis Barragan – Mexican Architect). When you go to the main city like Guatemala City, it is more of a mixture of things so it does not have one specific style or color pallet. The poor honestly build with what ever they can find and not much goes on with it.

And then we take a look at local street vendors selling their crafts. Within any city, you’ll find them, and this is reminiscent to that historical city of Antigua. An example I have is when I buy on the spot hand made bracelets. They always use bright colors (like referenced in the previous slide). Pg 66

Much like Guatemala and its flag, Scotland has a somewhat different color pallet when comparing its flag to its traditional wears and architecture. Originally I specifically choose this country because of the color usage of the flags, not really focusing on what was behind it, with its people and traditions (traditional wear like kilts). When referring to the flag, we can first take a look at what is on it. The silver cross is a representation of St. Andrew (St. Andrew’s cross) which was a disciple of Jesus Christ that was said to be crucified in a different position that of Jesus. When looking at the colors that are present, the white stands for peace and honesty, while the blue stands for vigilance, truth and loyalty, perseverance and justice. At least the white has some relation in both flags.

Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom, in Europe. It’s only neighbor is England, while the rest of the country is surrounded by water and oceans. In addition to the mainland, it as well consists of 790 smaller islands. Scotland alone has a rich history because it can be dated so far back which include Roman invasions, Vikings, Middle Ages, English invasions, even until recently gaining their own parliament in 1999. From all this I took another look into traditions and things that stand out in a lot of popculture. I’m referring to bag pipes and kilts. Just those two things alone can set a tone, and the addition to many sceneries and architecture being so natural. When comparing both Guatemala and Scotland, the color pallets that are found in many pictures and in many compositions, really differ. While both can sprout from nature, two different tones are set. For some particular reason, all the pictures I saw make me feel misty; while putting myself into those sceneries, I can just feel the quietness of nature away from the cities. I would like to one day visit this grand place as there is, from my knowledge, nothing like it on the West Hemisphere. (Although I have yet to go further north and into Canada). From this, I was, in a sense, able to explore behind what we usually seen on t.v. or in many pop cultural outlets and really see what both countries have to offer. Being that I have visited one in person, I would love to visit Scotland one day in person to really take a first hand look at everything that makes the pictures so great.

Conclusion:

Overall, this class has been a great experience, both in learning and exploration. By breaking down each module into subsections, including the quizzes, it has been easy to absorb the information as it was not so fast pace, but rather one that keeps a good pace easy to follow. All the assignments were well thought of, and were both, extremely fun, and extremely knowledgeable. I was not expecting to do any of these types of assignments. I learned that there was more to color within a space that one realizes. As an architecture student, for the most part, color is not studied as well as it should of I think. Although materials do play a huge role in this, and we do study it, color goes well more in depth than just that. Color can change the atmosphere of a space, the size, and can, to some extent, even change time. I like that this plays such an amazing part within architecture and that is why I wanted to take this course, to learn how color works with architecture (and even in some ways that I would have never thought of before). My favorite assignment has been Module 4, in which we were supposed to watch a movie. I’ve studied movies, but never with so much color usage and techniques.
