Sandeep Reddy House

This is an on-going project of Studio Mumbai Architects. The site is located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. The design of this dwelling is driven by the fact that the client is an avid collector of art and sculpture. This called for giving it a cultural orientation together with the opulence of a museum.

1

The second factor is that the residence and its landscaping should have a sense of oneness. The design therefore looks at a landscape that will have dense foliage which merges with the residence. The third factor that went into the design is minimal use of concrete and maximising use of eco-friendly materials.

MULTI use centre

A shopping mall as a concept originated in the US during the 1900s. This was the time when the need for land for housing was increasing and the open spaces were reducing fast. Due to this a lack of space was felt for social and cultural activities. As a result of this malls initially were built to cater to this need. This started gaining popularity which in turn attracted commercial activity to start around it.

7

The aim of this design is to bring back this social and cultural aspect. It also looks to capture the flavour of the traditional principles based on which the ancient market places in India were designed. “SAMVAHA (which in sankrit means marketplace) provides traditional street feel without comprimising on modernity and ambience.

Multi Storey Building

In the last 10 years Chennai’s realestate market and prices have increased multifold. In this scenario independent house, specially in posh localities, are out of reach of most people wanting to buy house property. This has prompted people to look at high rise apartments across the city. The apartment complexes being built are trendy and modern with a number of additional facilities which is attracting the new generation as prospective buyers.

15

The design aims to provide the potential owner a sense of identity, a feel of imtimacy while protecting privacy. It has a number of interractive spaces where people dwelling in the apartment will get oppurtuinities to socialise creating an intimate environment.

We know that people influence other people. Many a times we mimic others when we take a liking to them. Our perception is that streets also do so. Those parallel to an important commercial road, we found, tend to influence the character of the main road. This design has been influenced by the above.

21

Using such a perception we have tried to analyse, understand and imagine a street scape and portrayed it in an intresting form. This articulation is a narrow bridge between sketching a space and innovative art.

Form Evolution

The characters of the Mint Street are projected from the characters of its parallel streets. The horizontal street’s characters are projected vertically on Mint Street.
