WHAT IS A RENDEZVOUS?

RENDEZVOUS _ ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 3.2 - 3.3 _ PROF LANGE _ JAN - JUN 2019

You have reached your RENDEZVOUS!!! But, what is this monstrosity? In order to fully understand how this STAR WARS-looking spaceship has landed in the middle of the small town of San Luis Obispo, where the tallest buildings usually only reach about five stories, a little bit of analyzing needs to be taken place. First, we must define what RENDEZVOUS is: GOOGLE ren·dez·vous /’rändə.voo, ’rändā.voo/ noun 1. a meeting at an agreed time and place, typically between two people.

ALAN LE MAEDO

verb 1. meet at an agreed time and place.

4

URBAN DICTIONARY ron-day-voo 1. a meeting planned at a certain time and place, can also be a secret meeting between lovers. 2. a secret hookup between two people.

HOW CAN SLO BE A RENDEZVOUS?

ALAN LE MAEDO

RENDEZVOUS _ ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 3.2 - 3.3 _ PROF LANGE _ JAN - JUN 2019

One of the more interesting observation about San Luis Obipso is how culturally centered it is between what is defined as “Northern California” and “Southern California”. San Luis Obispo can be demographically described, for the most part, as a hybrid between The Bay Area and the LA-San Diego Area.

8

We are tasked to create a megastructure and commercial complex that at the very least will be ten stories tall. And it will be located right across from the famous Madonna Inn and Madonna Mountain. With the creation of something that will probably be an icon due to the shear scope of the project, how can we take advantage of SLO’s Central Location? How can SLO be a transition point between Northern and Southern California? How can we use architecture to enhance SLO as a rendezvous point for the people passing by everything from northern to southern CA, and vice versa?

SLO - RENDEZVOUS HYPOTHESIS The site of the hotel mega-structure is located at the interchange between Madonna Road and highway 101. The hotel serves as a southern entrance for San Luis Obispo, indicating to motorists traveling from southern to northern California that they are entering the central coast. The main tower of the hotel mega-structure rises on the south side of the Madonna road, and a bridge complex extends out of the tower and spans over the road to the north side of the road. The bridge complex serves as an elevated public walkway, offering green-spaces, small shops, and small food amenities. The hotel provides vast, elevated views of San Luis Obispo with rooms facing Madonna Mountain. The facade folds, warps, and breaks as it wraps around the tower and fans out around the bridge.

CINEMA CENTER

10

One of the most prominent aspects of the OVERPASS is its cinema center. The cinema center contains a “CINEMA CLOUD” that suspends eight cinema movie theaters. The circulation of the theater is organized as one, elongated corridor that serves as a mezzanine for the floor below it. Cross-Bridges serve to connect the staircase over the “open-to-below” area, and into the theaters.

THE ART MUSEUM The art museum in an urban context presents an inherent conflict. It increasingly plays the role of cultural icon within the city but simultaneously is obliged to neutrality on behalf of its collections. In other words the museum is required to be both foreground within its urban context and background for the objects it houses. The project explores this internal/external opposition. Externally, the focus of the museum is on building posture and its role in civic identity and engagement. Internally, the focus of museum is on the art, how it is viewed, archived, transferred and received.

ALAN LE MAEDO

The project explores how a museum can act as a catalyst for urban life, an object that cultivates cultural and civic connectedness. The project investigates the role of a museum’s form in civic identity. The project looks at various positions on what makes a building- especially a museum- culturally significant.

[B]

A SEMI-EXPLODED AXONOMETRIC + SOME INSIGHT INTO POSTURE The proposal for the SLOMA utilizes a horizontal language as its primary envelope system. This horizontal language creates a dynamic environment that reinforces the constant circulation throughout a museum. A plaza is raised from the street level while the main lobby is sunken below. These elevation changes create unique micro-environments, ones that blur the distinction between exterior and interior spaces. And through this, the site becomes an energized space that links the museum with the civic core.

ALAN LE MAEDO

ARRIVAL _ ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 2.3 _ PROF BENITO _ APR - JUN 2018

The New SLOMA sits CONFIDENTLY within its property line. Using a mass-base system, the main public mass of the museum is contained within a tower that rests upon a podium. The people circulate up the tower through the gallery spaces. Within this circulation pattern, a celebrated staircase and observation deck provide views to the surrounding environment, including the nearby creek, Mission Plaza, and Mission San Luis Obispo itself.

[03] [CO LLI S I ON ] ECOTHER APY RET RE AT CARRI ZO PL AIN, S ANTA M ARG ARITA, CAL IF OR N I A WI NTER 2018

OBSERVATONS + QUESTIONS ECOTHERAPY is defined as “healing and growth nurtured by health interaction with the earth.” ECOTHERAPY is meant to be an escape from the man-made urban environment and reconnect with the natural world. Carrizo is a beautiful, isolated site that provides breath-taking views and vast landscape to engage in, making it an appropriate place to undertake an ECOTHERAPY RETREAT. However, it also seems contradictory to create a built structure if the goal of ECOTHERAPY is to escape the built environment. As a result, a conflict immediate rises between the purity of Carrizo and the impurity of a built proposal on the site. If a built structure is, in essence, unnecessary, then what role does the ECOTHERAPY RETREAT play into the goal of ECOTHERAPY? How does the ECOTHERAPY RETREAT resolve the conflict between man and nature? And, if the goal of ECOTHERAPY is to heal through nature, how does architecture heal someone through nature?

[3][DIFFERENCE] The cluster is then boolean differenced from the box.

[4][UNION] Next, the cluster is union by rectangular dowels, pierced through at various angles.

[5][GENERATOR] The result is a generator that utilizes angular forms and verticality as its main formal language. In the program diagram, the generator is combined with programs.

[PROGRAM GENERATION] ALAN LE MAEDO

[1][CLUSTER] Primitive shapes, such as cubes and rectangular prisms, are union together, creating an impure cluster from pure objects.

[1][COMMON] Most of the activity and social interaction occurs in the common area. The dining area and seating area make up the public space while the kitchen and administration make up the service space.

[2][INSTITUTION] The main entrance to the complex. A submerged walkway connects the parking to the reception area.

[3][PRIVATE] Six double rooms make up the private spaces. Each room has its own sleeping area, sitting area, bathroom, and views to the surrounding plains.

role, emphasized by its height and linearity. The spires, in tandem with wood paneling design, create a vertical dynamic composition that lends itself to an uplifting, spiritual experience. In addition, the wood paneling starts to dissolve from top to bottom, softening the embedment of the built structure into the natural terrain. These are the main elements that help the users’ transition from the built environment into the natural world of Carrizo.

his or her day, like a lodge. At the very least, though, the ECOTHERAPY RETREAT should provide experiential qualities that take advantage of the Carrizo plain and soften the transition between the built environments to the natural environment. In my proposal, these predictions are implemented through mainly repetition, rhythm, and linearity, hybridizing both pure and impure forms. The timber spires take on the major hierarchical

PREDICTION The role of the ECOTHERAPY RETREAT is to serves as a facilitator between MAN and NATURE. The proposal itself does not need to do the “ECOTHERAPY” because the ECOTHERAPY is taken care by experiencing and traveling through the Carrizo Plain. If the proposal itself starts to take on more of the therapeutic role, then the site starts to diminish in purpose. The ECOTHERAPY RETREAT proposal is a place where one starts and ends
