STEP:01 With a pencil, outline the profile of the scene. Find your vanishing point and eye-level line. Block out the most prominent shapes.
ON-LOCATION: IBIZA Sketching on-loca�on in Ibiza brings as sense of connec�on to the relaxed nature of the island. The various cafe’s and shops interwoven in the walking streets draws you in to want to dwell and stay for a while. This scene in par�cular has an invi�ng expression that says “sketch me”.

STEP:01 With a pencil, outline the profile of the scene. Find your vanishing point and eye-level line. Block out the most prominent shapes.
STEP:02 Base level wash of color on the en�re image. First the yellow ochre to bring a warmth to scene. Next, as that is sightly damp, paint in the shadow of the foreground. With a mix of Alizarin Crimson and Ultra Marine Blue, the redish �nt blends with the yellow to so�en a warm shadow. Be bold here. Let the shadow become an anchor to the sketch.

STEP:03 Begin laying down shadows from le� to right (depending on which hand you sketch with). First layers of defini�on on the building facades. Similar colors choses first.
STEP:04 Con�nue by abstracing the shapes of the cafe in shade. The pull to want to detail each person is present, but in order to bring a harmonious feel to the sketch, sillhue�es are best. The shadow of the underside of the canopy is sketched.
STEP:05 Detailed elements are brought in. Balcony railing, window treatments and planters. The pull to want to detail each realis�c table is evaded by combining the shapes of the en�re region. Mix in some red hue to bring focus and warmth to the area.

FINISHED SKETCH ON-LOCATION: IBIZA (2.5 hrs) Solid cerulean blue sky and a few more minor details such as the balconies in the foreground. No�ce the level of detail is minimal on the fringe of the sketch because the focus is centered on the scene.
