The Alan Rogers Awards The Alan Rogers Campsite Awards were launched in 2004 and have proved a great success. Our awards have a broad scope and before committing to our winners, we carefully consider more than 2,000 campsites featured in our guides, taking into account comments from our site assessors, our head office team and, of course, our readers. Our award winners come from the four corners of Europe, from Spain to Croatia, and this year we are making awards to campsites in 12 different countries. Needless to say, it’s an extremely difficult task to choose our eventual winners, but we believe that we have identified a number of campsites with truly outstanding characteristics. In each case, we have selected an outright winner, along with two highly commended runners-up. Listed in this guide are full details of each of our award categories and our winners for 2014. The Alan Rogers Award Presentation The Vakantiebeurs in Utrecht is Europe’s largest holiday exhibition open to the public. It attracts over 170,000 visitors and is the ideal occasion to present our Alan Rogers Campsite Awards. Our award ceremony is well attended by campsite owners from the four corners of Europe, along with many other interested parties. Since their launch in 2004, the Alan Rogers Campsite Awards have grown in status and now occupy a unique place in camping/caravanning. Our ceremony provides an invaluable and convivial forum for us to acknowledge the best of the best.

A very impressive purpose-built campsite beside the River Mole, Riverside is set in 40 acres of meadow and woodland. Neat grass, tarmac roads and growing trees and hedges contribute to the attractive, overall impression. The heated toilet block gleams and visitors will appreciate the hairdryers, hand-dryers and shaver points. The owners, Joe and Nicky Penfold, are not resting on their laurels and have developed fishing lakes with specimen carp down by the river and a play area on the opposite bank. A road runs alongside the site, so a little noise can be expected. The ancient market town of South Molton is a mile away and a bus stops outside the site entrance. This amazing site is very large, offering absolutely everything a camper could wish for. It is extremely professionally run and we were impressed with the whole organisation. It lies along a 1.2 km. long, broad sandy beach which shelves very gradually and offers a huge number of sporting activities. The site itself is regularly laid out with parallel access roads under a covering of poplars, pine and other trees. There are 2,200 pitches for touring units, all with 6/10/16A electricity and 1,969 also have water and drainage. Because of the size of the site, there is an internal road train and amenities are repeated across the site (cycling is permitted on specific roads). You do not need to leave this site during your stay – everything is here, including a smart and sophisticated wellness centre. Overnight parking is provided outside the gate with electricity, toilets and showers for those arriving after 21.00. There are two aqua parks, one with fine sandy beaches and both have swimming pools, lagoon pools for children, a whirlpool and a 160 m. ‘Wild River’. Another water park is planned for 2015. A huge selection of sports and activities are offered, along with luxury amenities too numerous to list. The golf academy (with a professional) has a driving range, pitching green, putting green and practice bunker, and a diving centre offers lessons and open water diving. Via alle Brere 7, CH-6598 Tenero (Ticino) T: 091 745 1417. E: camping@campofelice.ch

alanrogers.com/CH9890 Considered by many to be the best family campsite in Switzerland, Campofelice is bordered on the front by Lake Maggiore and on one side by the Verzasca estuary, where the site has its own marina. It is divided into rows, with 721 generously sized touring pitches on flat grass on either side of hard access roads. Mostly well shaded, all pitches have electricity connections (10-13A, 360 Europlug) and 410 also have water, drainage and TV connections. Pitches near the lake cost more (these are not available for motorcaravans until September) and a special area is reserved for small tents. A little more expensive than other sites in the area, but excellent value for the range and quality of the facilities. Sporting facilities are good and there are cycle paths in the area. The beach by the lake is sandy, long and wider than the usual lakeside ones, and has now been extended, with well kept lawns for sunbathing. It shelves gently so that bathing is safe for children. Within a demarcated area are floating trampolines and rafts, and a specially marked section for toddlers. A slipway may be used for small boats and dinghies, with canoe and pedalo hire on site. Alan Rogers Special Award 2014

Camping Sobec Sobceva cesta 25, SLO-4248 Lesce T: 045 353 700. E: sobec@siol.net

alanrogers.com/SV4210 Sobec is situated in a valley between the Julian Alps and the Karavanke Mountains, in a pine grove between the Sava Dolinka river and a small lake. It is only 3 km. from Bled and 20 km. from the Karavanke Tunnel. There are 500 unmarked pitches on level, grassy fields off tarmac access roads (450 for touring units), all with 16A electricity. Shade is provided by mature pine trees and younger trees separate some pitches. Camping Sobec is surrounded by water – the Sava river borders it on three sides and on the fourth is a small, artificial lake with grassy fields for sunbathing. Some pitches have views over the lake, which has an enclosed area providing safe swimming for children. This site is a good base for an active holiday, since both the Sava Dolinka and the Sava Bohinjka rivers are suitable for canoeing, kayaking, rafting and fishing, whilst the nearby mountains offer challenges for mountain climbing, paragliding and canyoning. Alan Rogers Special Award

A Special Award is made to campsites which have suffered a significant setback, but have coped admirably in very difficult circumstances. For 2014, we wish to acknowledge a top quality Slovenian campsite, which suffered extensive storm damage but, thanks to a very great deal of hard work, soon reverted to its normal high standard.
