Each week we at the Gunnison Times are devoted to serving the younger members of our community. Kids will now be able to see themselves in our pages and to feel that someone cares about their stories. In the process we’ll help promote literacy and support parents with tips and news they can use.
We have several options for interest in supporting this effort:
LOGO placement on the Kids Scoopbottom banner $50
School Page/Family Time ad placement - $75
Your dollars are going directly towards youth in the Gunnison and supporting literacy in the Gunnison Valley.

Times Staff Report Schools are an important cornerstone of children’s development, both academically and socially. And whether students are part of the general education curriculum or require accommodations for physical or developmental challenges, parents are their staunchest advocates for success in the classroom. Parents can represent their children in the educational climate more effectively if they understand how schools operate. As with any official government or municipal organization, there are policies and regulations in place. Parents who can navigate effectively will have the greater chance of having their voices heard. Develop a positive image in the school. Parents can ingratiate themselves to school personnel in various ways. This includes participation in parent-teacher organizations, volunteering for school-led activities and taking time to get to know all staff, including office secretaries, paraprofessionals and student teachers. Being a positive presence on campus view you. • Educate yourself on policies. Read up on the issues you support. If your child has particular learning disability, research it and the tools that have helped other students in similar situations achieve success. Attend workshops and investigate what your school district offers by way of individualized education modifications so you can present a well-researched argument. In addition, if necessary, learn about children’s rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. assignments, report cards and other pertinent documents in one place so you can document and track your child’s progress and performance. CONTACT JACK AT 970.641.1414 THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2022GIDDYUP Community should fight Starbucks plan school lunches for all students Allie Schwartz Giddyup Editor As election season approached this year, Coloradans were faced with number of new propositions to vote on. One of those was Proposition FF, which would give every student in Colorado the opportunity to have free breakfasts and lunches. On Election Day, voters passed the measure. This proposition funds the meals program by taxing peo- ple who make $300,000 or more annually. Proposition FF also requires that schools use the money to purchase Colorado grown, raised and processed Supporting farm fresh and local food sources will help to boost the Colorado economy, locally and statewide. “I am happy that this passed, because can get free food at school,” said Rowen Downum, a junior at Gunnison High School (GHS). During the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years, GHS served free school meals for all students. Many took advantage of the program, and without the option, more students eat at McDonald's and Loves each day, reinforcing the need for these free nutritious meals. “I feel like we saw that it was possible during COVID for the federal government to support the schools while also allowing for students to get the nutrition they need, which in turn sup- ports high quality learning,” said GHS English teacher Amy Jo O’Dubhaigh. Allie Schwartz GIDDYUP COMMENTARY Isis Thiede Giddyup Staff Writer Recent news over the new Starbucks coming to town has left some people in Gunnison angry, frustrated and confused. Realtor Sid Squirrell, based in Grand Junction, confirmed to the Gunnison Country Times few weeks ago that plans for new Starbucks are now underway. This Starbucks would be located in the same place a family-owned fruit stand has had its home for many years, leaving the Mortensen family at a loss. Ousting a family business for large corporation goes against the fundamentals of the community, and people should stand against it. The fruit stand has been there since 1989, and is staple in the community. In Gunnison, there are cur- rently six coffee shops, includ- ing Starbucks in City Market. These coffee shops include many local businesses, some- thing that Gunnison runs on. This Starbucks would affect the entire town, and not in good way. Not only would uproot family run business, but it also creates the possibility of local coffee shops losing business. It could affect around 55 workers who are currently employed by the local shops. GHS student Javier Mortensen, the oldest son in the family that owns and runs the fruit and vegetable stand, gave his thoughts on the issue. “The fruit stand has been large part of my life. started working there when was ten years old. My grandpa was the one who used to get all the fruits, and I’ve seen it evolve as I’ve grown up, and it is sad to see it just go away one day for a Starbucks.” Mortensen said he expects the change to have financial impact on his family, since the fruit stand provides a portion of their income. Kylee McDougal is worried about the fruit stand, stating that she has gone there every year to get chilies to make green chili, tradition in her family. “I am infuriated and feel that is unfair,” GHS student Vivian Haddaway said. The Mortensen family has plans to relocate, but is strug- gling to nd a new location. The community should do as much as it can to fight for the family business as well as our local coffee shops.
