Stay safe this season by winterizing your vehicle
-Submitted by Brent McDuell, The Faricy Boys Automotive
Winter is in full swing in the Arkansas River Valley. That means freezing temperatures and icy roads can take a toll on your vehicle and safety. Now is the time to prepare your car for cold and snowy weather.
The key to safe winter driving starts with tires. Make sure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires that do not harden in the cold. They have better traction on ice, slush, and snow. Tires make a difference in our ability to get around in inclement weather. Take a moment to check for abnormal wear, bumps, or spots. If a tire is worn out, change it.
If you are not sure your tread is worn down, you can stick a penny into the treads, with Lincoln’s head facing down into the tire. If you can see the top of his head, it is time for new tires. You can also pick up a tire tread depth gauge at the hardware store.
Check your owner’s manual or driver’s side door jamb, to ensure your tire pressure is correct. For every 10 degrees Fahrenheit that the temperature drops, you could see a gain or loss of one pound per square inch of pressure. Make sure you are refilling your tires whenever
they are low to maintain good traction and durability.
Did you know there are winter windshield wiper blades? Because winterized wipers have a rubber edge, ice and snow will not accumulate on the blades. These wipers are heavier than regular ones, so the wiper motor needs to work a little harder – remember to remove them once spring arrives.
Keep in mind that driving through one serious snowstorm can exhaust your wiper fluid reserves. Look for washer fluid made specifically for handling extremely low temperatures. You can always add a bottle of washer fluid antifreeze to the reservoir if you are not sure you have the right kind.
Make sure your car is up to date with its maintenance, including oil changes and tire rotations on average every 5,000 miles. Check your battery, cooling system, heating system including rear window defroster, brakes, belts, hoses, spark plugs, wires, and cables to ensure they are all in good shape. A quick maintenance check by your mechanic can avoid headaches in the future.
Pack a duffel bag with winter safety essentials including a warm blanket, flashlight and fresh batteries, flares, non-perishable food, water, first-aid
kit, ice scraper, jumper cables, extra quart of oil, antifreeze, a shovel, car tool kit and a bag of sand that can be poured out to provide traction if your tires are stuck in snow.
Lastly, do not wait to fill up your tank. Refill it every time it is half empty. If you are stranded by the side of the road, keeping your car running with the heat on will keep you warm until help arrives. Even if you follow all the
tips above, remember to make smart decisions depending on the current and forecasted weather outside, and be prepared to drive in different winter conditions. If you plan a road trip and wake up to find a blizzard outside, consider postponing the drive.
Be proactive this winter by preparing your vehicle for winter weather. Safe driving!
