Class Description

About

Goals

Outcomes

This course focused on the issues of information structure, interface design, cognitive process, prototyping, and testing. Through this course, we developed a conceptual framework for real-world applications, exploring issues which influence both industry and society.

• Learn to prepare and interpret descriptive documents (site maps, wireframes and simple flow charts) for the purpose of planning a new project. • Learn to prepare and interpret descriptive documents to revise an existing project. • Develop original, creative solutions to present interactive information. • Create prototype concepts in interface design and user interaction, such as visual metaphors, information hierarchies, avatar systems, and first- and third-person vantage points.

• Apply creative and critical thought to the design of interactive applications and user interfaces that provide users a functional and intuitive user experience. • Prepare descriptive presentation documents such as site maps, wireframes and prototypes that organize information using logic and efficiency for the purpose of developing new interaction projects or evaluating existing ones. • Analyze and critique existing interaction projects and user interfaces within the context of all of the following: aesthetics, usability and effective communication.

Project Brief To start, our team choose three potential problems in our culture. Our initial problems featured; being a workaholic, having food allergies, and not being able to find people to play with on a sports team. After conducing initial secondary research, we narrowed our problem and focused on how we could help people who struggle to find local sport games, in which they could get involved. Through observation, interviews, conducting a survey, and conducting a competitive SWOT analysis, our team came up with the concept to create a customizable app for both causal and competitive players that enabled them to find local players/teams of the same level. This app would also enable commenting, sharing, and suggesting tournaments, leagues, etc. Through conducting further research and user testing we narrowed our concept to focusing on casual players wanting to meet friends, get involved, and find a sense of belonging. Our main goal was to make it easy and effortless for players to connect and get involved in playing sports near them.

How Might We Connect people with other sport players, of the same level, through a personal experience?

Research Timeline

Contextual Research Process Research in the design profession has many methods and outputs. We used the contextual research process for this project. Contextual research is a user-centered design process developed by Hugh Beyer and Karen Holtzblatt

UNDERSTAND

ANALYSIS

SYNTHESIS

TELL THE STORY

Understanding the problem at hand. Conducting secondary and primary research to get a holistic idea of the current situation.

Data points from both secondary and primary research are combined and analyzed through the process of affinity diagraming.

After the data is analyzed, it is organized into a framework to reveal opportunity areas.

The information is then shared as a story to help everyone understand the data better

Secondary Research - Competitive Analysis By looking at the potential competitors and comparing their key features, usability, uniqueness, social aspects, weaknesses, and popularity, we were able to see areas of opportunity for our app to adapt, as well as, areas of weakness to avoid. Through conducting a SWOT analysis for selected competitors, we were able to take a deeper look into the features user’s liked and disliked, as well as uncover insights such as the lack of consistent usability on those apps by users. These insights gave us a foundation to build our concepts on.

Secondary Research Competitive Analysis: Key Take Aways

Competitor apps were used by few people • Which makes us wonder why? • Apps contain A LOT of information • Apps were not quick and easy to use • Locator maps of local teams/events were nice • Most apps only featured one or the other: finding teams OR organizing games or matches

Primary Research

Online Survey

User Interviews

Observation

Primary Research - Online Survey Questions By generating a series of 15 questions, our group sought to gain further user insight through conducting an online survey. The goal of our questions and survey was to further understand why people play team sports, how often they play, what positive and negative experiences they’ve had with teams, and how they communicate with teams.

1. Please select your age range 2. Gender Identification 3. Do you play sports competitively, casually, or both? 4. What sports do you play regularly? 5. How often do you play sports? 6. Why do you play sports? 7. Do you play on any sport teams? 8. How does being apart of a team make you feel? 9.What kind of channels or tools do you use to communicate with your team? 10. What problems have you faced when using those channels/tools to communicate with your team? 11. Have you made friends from playing sports? 12. What positives have you experienced from playing local sports? 13.What negatives have you experienced from playing local sports? 14. Do you feel comfortable playing sports with strangers? 15. If you don’t have anyone to play a sport with what do you do?

Primary Research - In-depth Interviews During user interviews, each member of our group met and spoke with various people who played different sports, at different levels. Some of our interviews were conducted face to face with local sport players in Savannah, while others were conducted over the phone with sport players from around the world.

1. Are you from Savannah or did you move here? 2. What sports do you play? What position? Do you play on any teams? - How does being a part of team make you feel? 3. Why do you play sports? 4. Are there any sports you want to learn? - What’s keeping you from learning it? 5. Is there a time of day or day of the week you prefer to play sports? 6. Primary Research - Observation By observing popular local sports areas in Savannah, our group gained insights into the type of sports casual players like, how often they play, and the social culture of sports. In Forsyth park, there are a variety of sports and activities played daily. People come to hang out and as well as exercise. We observed that on the basketball courts, it seemed more difficult for people to join a game or play with strangers. At times, people were yelling and arguing, which could be intimidated for a new player.

Data Analysis - Affinitization Affinitization, or affinity mapping, was our chosen method of data analysis for this project. The affinity mapping process clusters data points gathered from research based on a relationship or causal connection. These data points are then clustered in four sequential phases which are typically categorized by color:

Initial Insights / Opportunities 1) Yellow 2) Blue 3) Pink 4) Green

User Testing After our group completed a mid-fidelity prototype, we conducted user tests to gain further insights and make improvements. Based off user feedback, we added a back button to multiple pages, made it easier to know once a player has joined a group, clarified how a player could know the number of open spots in games, simplified the find game interface on the map screen, and added a few pages that were missing.

Video Narrative

The video shoot for Hands In took place at Forsyth park during the evening. During this time of day the lighting was perfect, though at times, and at certain angles, it could be tricky. Our group used 2 different cameras to obtain multiple angles. We faced some technical and lighting issues along the way since we used different cameras. Through this process we wanted to make users feel and understand the importance of why we are creating this app and what better way to express it other than tell a story.

Poster Our poster for Hands In features our high fidelity prototype of the app, along with a small glimpse into our group’s process. The Hands In App features a more intuitive map for users that simplifies the process of finding and hosting local sport games. The app features filters for users to easily sort through multiple sports they might play, as well as personalizes the players experience with the app through rewards, reviews, group messaging, and group voting features. Hands In is easy to use and enables players to feel they belong.
