AREA SPORT FISHING REPORTS Week of June 5 - June 12 Freshwater Fishing

The flowing waters of the Kenai River mainstem upstream of the Lower Killey River marker and all of the tributary streams are CLOSED from May 1 through June 10 to protect spawning rainbow trout. • The Upper Kenai and Russian River opens to fishing for sockeye salmon on Tuesday, June 11 and is expected to be good. • Trout spawning closures end Tuesday, June 11. Fishing for rainbow trout in these waters is expected to be very good. • Kasilof River king salmon fishing is good and should continue to improve over the next week or two. • Fishing for sea run Dolly Varden at the mouth of Resurrection Creek in Hope should be picking up this time of year. Try using pink fry pattern flies. • A few king salmon have been reported caught and released on the lower Kenai River. Water conditions are turbid. • Sockeye fishing on the lower Kenai River has been good. Anglers are catching limits with a few hours of effort.

Local Lakes

Lake fishing for rainbow trout, Arctic char, Arctic grayling, and land locked salmon is very good. Sport Lake has been producing nice sized rainbow trout and fishing the Swanson River Road lakes is reported as fair. Try fishing with dry or wet flies such as an egg sucking leech, bead head nymph or mosquito pattern, small spoons and spinners size #0 or #2, or small bait under a bobber.

Emergency Orders

Please review the Emergency Orders and News Releases below in their entirety before heading out on your next fishing trip. • Emergency Order 2-DV-1-03-19 prohibits the retention of Arctic char/Dolly Varden in Stormy Lake. • Emergency Order 2-NP-1-04-19 prohibits the retention of any species of fish in East Mackey, West Mackey, Sevena, Union, and Derks lakes. • Emergency Order 2-KS-1-09-19 prohibits the retention of king salmon of all sizes in the Kenai River from the mouth upstream to the outlet of Skilak Lake from May 1 through June 30, 2019. Retention of king salmon will remain prohibited July 1 through July 31, 2019, in waters of the Kenai River drainage from an ADF&G regulatory marker located approximately 300 yards downstream from the mouth of Slikok Creek, upstream to the outlet of Skilak Lake. Only one, unbaited, single-hook artificial lure may be used in the waters restricted to catch-and-release. King salmon caught may not be removed from the water and must be released immediately. • Emergency Order 2-KS-1-10-19 prohibits the retention of naturally-produced king salmon and limits sport fishing gear to one unbaited, single-hook, artificial lure while sport fishing in the Kasilof River. Naturally-produced king salmon have an adipose fin and may not be removed from the water and must be released immediately.

For additional information, please contact the Soldotna Area Office at (907) 262-9368. KENAI RIVER EARLY RUN CHINOOK SALMON INSEASON SUMMARY #3, THURSDAY JUNE 6 Chinook salmon run update:

The Kenai River King salmon sonar began counting on May 16, 2019. The total estimated passage through June 5th is 1,304 large king salmon (> 75 cm mid-eye-to-tail-fork-length or ~ 34 inches in total length). The return is tracking slightly above the preseason forecast estimate of 3,168 large fish but remains well below the historical average. Based on average run timing, the run has just passed the quarter point and the inseason projection of escapement is approximately 4,600 large fish, which is currently within the optimal escapement goal of 3,900-5,600 large fish. The Kenai River king salmon fishery will continue to be restricted to catch and release only with unbaited, single hook, artificial lure, and any king salmon caught may not be removed from the water prior to release (EO # 2-KS-1-09-19). ADF&G will closely monitor the run as it develops. Inseason run projections continue to fluctuate while we are still early in the run and confidence intervals remain fairly broad. These projections should start to solidify and confidence intervals will narrow as the run approaches the average midpoint of the run on June 11th. If inseason abundance indicators warrant further management actions these will likely occur around June 11th. The next update will be on Thursday, June 13th.

Fishery Update:

Fishing success has been reported as fair in the lower river as water conditions have deteriorated this past week. The ADF&G creel survey and netting programs began operations on May 16. Data collected so far from these projects indicates below average CPUE’s for netting of all sizes of Chinook salmon. The creel survey indicates average success rates for catch and release fishing on the Kenai River. Water levels continue raise and water clarity has diminished which could affect angler success for this coming weekend. The preseason outlook for the 2019 early-run can be found at: http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/static/fishing/pdfs/sport/byarea/southcentral/2019KenaiEarlyRunOutlook.pdf

Water Conditions: • • • • •

Water levels in the Kenai River are above average and water temperature is average. CFS at Soldotna Bridge was 8,450 on June 6. CFS at Skilak Lake Outlet was 6,680 on June 6. CFS at Cooper Landing was 5,200 on June 6. Water Temperature was 49.7 degrees Fahrenheit at the sonar site on June 6.

This information was compiled based on raw and historical data for inseason management purposes. Final data is subject to change.
