Spine surgeon recruited to local orthopedic team By Katie Stark Palmer, AK – Samuel Adams, MD, orthopedic spine surgeon, has joined Pioneer Peak Orthopedic Surgery in Wasilla. Adams finished his residency in June of 2018 at The University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed his orthopedic spine fellowship training at West Virginia University this past summer. Adams will be treating patients in Pioneer Peak’s clinic in the Seward-Meridian medical complex, as well as performing surgeries at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. Some of the procedures Adams will perform include cervical and lumbar spinal fusions, cervical disc replacement, micro discectomies, scoliosis surgeries for adults, decompression surgeries and some minimally invasive surgeries. From a young age Adams knew that he was going to end up in the medical profession. An Emergency Room physician who also helped out on his high school wrestling team was influential in steering Adams towards pursuing a career in orthopedic care. Early on, Adams thought he would be a hand surgeon – after he broke his in a match and was enamored by the reconstructive process. While in his residency program, Adams changed his mind. “When I was an intern, I was doing spine cases because no one wants to do spine,” he said. “It’s hard.” By contrast, Adams found he enjoyed the challenge of working with the numerous small bones of the spine and the complexity and connectivity of the spinal structure – the joints, nerves, muscles and tendons. It began to become a passion of his while working on a research project about hardware failure in the neck, but he credits the appeal of surgery to his love of working

Samuel Adams, MD

with his hands. A love that developed while growing up and helping his father, who was a brick layer. Having grown up in the small town of Maumee, Ohio, Adams was excited to make the move to the Valley. He looks forward to the feeling of being a provider in a tightknit community. “It’s fun to be able to see your patients in different places and see them doing well,” he said. “You get to these bigger [medical] centers and it’s just a mill. They just put another patient on the table, you cut them and you get them off.” Adams said one of his strengths is the ability to communicate with patients and share with them what the surgical process will be like. He regularly uses visual aids, including models, x-rays and other scans to help educate patients. “The patient needs to understand their pathology to understand why you’re doing what you’re doing,” Adams said.

Adams fell in love with Alaska the minute he saw the scenery from the airplane on his first visit. He looks forward to the promise of fishing, hiking and being close to the mountains. “I grew up in Ohio. All I had were corn fields,” he said. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Adams, call Pioneer Peak Orthopedic Surgery at (907) 7071671, or visit www.PioneerPeak. com to learn more. Mat-Su Regional Medical Center is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. It is a 109-bed acute care healthcare facility providing advanced surgical service, including robotic-assisted partial and total knee and total hip replacement, cardiac care, emergency services, sleep studies, three urgent care centers, the Family Birthing Center and is home to the 30-Minutes-orLess ER Service Pledge. Recycling is crazy, we have a good solution Recycling can be confusing! Fortunately, there is a global and national movement to fix our problem. The mission of standardizing recycling labels on bins across the US is gaining traction – from Denali National Park to schools, businesses, and sports stadiums. The easier it is for people to “recycle right”, the faster recycling becomes a solution to creating a less wasteful economy. At least that’s what we’ve learned on the job at Valley Community for Recycling Solutions (VCRS), the local non-profit focusing on partnerships and training plus advocacy in order to reduce waste in this great land. Education holds so much value when it instructs how to save our natural resources and shows what happens to reusable materials. Get the most bang for your buck! Turn waste products back into useful materials instead of burying reusable resources in a landfill. An efficient circular economy is achieved without extra costs or losses. The standardized labels on bins help teach consumers how to “recycle right”. As part of the National Park Zero Landfill Initiative, the non-profit Recycle Across America (RAA) is fixing the crisis at federal and community levels with their solution; society-wide standardized labels for recycling bins. We use (RAA) standardized recycling label system in the VCRS drive through bay and in our classroom, thanks to a generous grant from Subaru of America. Also, attendees

10

GreatLander Mat-Su

November 2019

at the Alaska State Fair had a chance to see the great work of RAA in action, and to appreciate the huge, nationwide impact a simple label change can have to improve recycling effectiveness. This summer, RAA staff members brought us new signage on their way to Denali National Park; enhancing major improvements to recycling recovery. The Zero Landfill Initiative, a pilot program, was introduced by the National Parks Conservation Association and Subaru of America with the goal of reducing the total amount of landfill-bound waste in three parks. After upgrading systems at Denali National Park’s recycling facility, up to 46% of waste has been diverted. Along the road to recycling, VCRS is one of the many partners working to make this program sustainable. We aim to help pave the way for more participants to take the extra

step to find a recycling bin. We have been given a great opportunity to spread this message; pushing it forward from our rural back yard into the growing population of Mat-Su community schools, homes, and businesses. The commitment to doing all they can to preserve global natural resources resulted in the first Subaru manufacturing facility in Indiana to achieve zero-landfill status in 2004. One of the starting points that the Indiana plant undertook to work towards its zero-landfill status involved conducting waste audits—literally, dumpster diving—which provided a way to determine what kind of waste the plant was generating. “I think it’s important to dumpster dive because you actually see what is in there. You can’t get rid of it if you don’t know what it is,” said Denise Coogan, environmental partnership manager at Subaru of America. “We went around everywhere in the [Indiana] plant, we tipped over the dumpsters, and we asked, ‘What are we generating?’ All roads lead back to good inventory, so you must know what you’re generating before you can ever realize how you’re going to get rid of it.” Continued efforts to nurture the culture could help the Matanuska Valley become zero waste in 2049 by building relationships with partners who share the same beliefs. “The future belongs to those who understand that doing more with less is compassionate, prosperous and enduring, and thus more intelligent, even competitive” - Paul Hawken.

Home & Garden

Clutter-free living By Julie Cascio, UAF Cooperative Extension Service, Mat-Su District It’s silent. It’s sneaky. All of a sudden it’s there – clutter! It’s found in large homes, small homes, city homes and rural homes. Clutter is all around us, and it’s a growing problem. Clutter Is... Clutter to some is a disorganized home. To others it is keeping items that have meaning to them. It may be inherited family belongings, items accumulated over a life time with memories. It may be books, newspapers, fabric, movies/ videos, music albums/cassettes/CDs, clothes, seasonal decorations, kitchen equipment, etc. It may be finding new things with eye appeal. The attempt to deal with the problem of clutter in the home is often to get rid of all the clutter. That sounds like a simple solution. Clutter doesn’t just happen, however. As the University of Kentucky CES says “There are reasons for it. To solve the problem, you have to find the cause of the problem and fix it.” Otherwise, clutter can build up again. Another way to look at it is to purge your life of the things you don’t need without getting rid of the things you do need Involved with “clutter”… Time and energy are used to shuffle things and walk around. Time may be used to search for something that otherwise would take a second to grab. Time may be spent storing, cleaning, and transporting your belongings Emotions are involved. It may be annoyance, stress, happiness, sadness, grieving loss of loved one. The items all around us (clutter) and the things we quit using (junk) have a tight

grip on many people. Safety may be another issue with clutter. My great aunt kept her loose rugs, which caused a fall. Earthquakes may cause items to tip over and break or create hazards. Lots of items may catch fire fast and make it difficult to get out of an emergency situation. Cost of keeping lots of items means take up space in the home. Costs add up for rent, energy (heat and lights), insurance. Purchasing more shelves or Julie Cascio containers to hold them. If moved to a storage area it’s not uncommon for someone to pay $300 a year to store $200 worth of items. The cost to store an article may run far higher than the cost of replacing it. Consider the total cost of owning items and compare with the actual worth to you. De-clutter Techniques When you’re ready, de-clutter with a purpose and add more ease to your life. Empty the contents of a closet, shelves, or chest of drawers. Don’t try to do everything at once, but break the work into small jobs that can be finished within a reasonable time frame. Sort the items into five labeled boxes or bags: 1. KEEP. This category is for items you regularly use. It may also include a small number of sentimental items— like your wedding video, family photo albums, or tokens of greatest achievements and memories. 2. GIVE to a loved one items that mean a lot to them. Give

to a charity so that someone else can get some good out of them. 3. SELL. Take useful items in good condition to a consignment shop, have a yard sale, or sell items online. 4. RECYCLE. Take them to a thrift store or recycling center. 5. THROW AWAY. These are items that are not worth recycling, repairing or giving to another person. Storage: Find a place for everything and keep everything in its place. Storage of your possessions will need to take two forms. Longterm storage is needed for items seldom used. Look at vertical spaces and use high storage or create an organized storage area in a closet, office or work space. Short-term storage is needed for things you need to be able to find and use quickly and easily. These items usually need horizontal storage space. Kitchens have become cluttered as a result of new gadgets and new food products that follow the latest trends in eating. More shelf space is needed. Specialized appliances use more counter space. Plan how you will store them before purchasing. Paper Clutter Control Some paper is needed for reminders to pay bills. It may be family health records, inventory or tax records. Take time to sort through and only keep what is needed. Check out cespubs.uaf.edu for Keeping Home Records and Organizing Your Home Business Center. Accessories may be stored and then alternated for display. Some people exchange accessories seasonally and some twice a year. They get to enjoy everything, but just not all at once.
