The weather outside is… Julie Cascio Health, Home and Family Development Agent, University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service Hmm, it’s November. Weather’s turning colder and more snow (or rain) is coming. With COVID-19 increasing, social distancing continues to be used to reduce its spread. We Alaskans have a variety of ways to do things both indoors and outdoors to Julie Cascio handle this pandemic even in.
preserve fall leaves. Check out your wardrobe. Consider giving up some items that you aren’t really wearing anymore. The changing of the seasons is a great time for this. Are there any shirts, pants, or other garments made for summer that you didn’t wear this year? Do you intend to wear them again in the future? If the answer is no, consider donating them to a charity second-hand shop. Giving your clothes new life is more eco-friendly than letting them sit unused! Enjoy long winter nights. MatSu Valley has 9:45 a.m. sunrise and 3:50 pm sunset by the end of November. The darkness makes it easier to see the aurora, so turn off the lights and let your eyes adjust to see if it can be spotted on a clear night. Or, put up cheery light displays to deal with the darkness.
Indoor Fun Practice social distancing and everyday steps such as washing your hands often and covering your mouth for sneezes and coughs. Cook and bake food you and your family enjoy but have not made recently is a great way to spend time inside. Decorate your home for fall and winter might be collecting some pinecones, placing some festive candles and tablecloths about, even
Outdoor Activities For spending time outside, use winter clothing. Layer with synthetic materials that wick away moisture for winter in Alaska. November is not the coldest month, but thermals are helpful. Visit parks and open spaces as a way to relieve stress, get some fresh air, and stay active. While these facilities and areas can offer health benefits, do follow these steps to protect yourself
and others from COVID-19. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends • Don’t visit crowded parks or campgrounds. • Carefully consider use of playgrounds, and help children follow guidelines. • Stay at least 6 feet away from people you don’t live with. Open areas, wide trails and paths will be more usable keeping 6 feet apart. • Wear a mask. • Wash your hands often and don’t share items with people you don’t live with. When snow gets thicker, explore the area with snowshoes. Enjoy the beautiful views. Look for moose among the leaf-less trees. Hit the trails in the crisp, invigorating November air. Check the conditions and prepare for them. Have boots made for icy surfaces, or ice traction devices to attach. When the snow finally sticks, there are miles of groomed trails to explore. Enjoy winter sports. Skiing and snow machining are favorites when there’s enough snow. Have a Bonfire in a safe, open air location. Invite friends; stay at 6 feet distance from each other. Plus, you can make s’mores! Before you burn, check with Alaska Division
of Forestry http://forestry.alaska.gov/ for current information. Even though it’s November, that doesn’t mean wildfires won’t happen. Follow fire restrictions! If the threat of fire danger is high, postpone your plans for a safe alternative. Don’t leave a fire unattended for any length of time. Someone should always be near the fire, making sure that it’s properly contained. Then, when done, extinguish the fire as well. To properly put out a wood burning fire pit, allow the wood to completely burn down. Then use a bucket of water to wet the ashes. Following that, use a shovel to stir the ashes. Make sure it’s evenly soaked. Before you leave, be sure that the fire pit and the surrounding area is no longer ignited. Celebrate Thanksgiving. Ultimately, November is a great time of year to look back on the past months and consider what you’re thankful for. The end of the year is a good time to reflect back, looking for the positive experiences. It is a time to consider ways to do indoor and outdoor activities even better in the future. Julie Cascio, University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, Mat-Su/Copper River Valley District, 745-3677 jmcascio@alaska.edu
