Valley Community for Recycling Solutions
Holiday Traditions Revolve Around the Red of Commerce & the Green of Nature During this holiday shopping season, consumers can bridge the gap between their environmental concern and a desire to check off all items on the holiday shopping list. Operating with the support and cooperation of earth stewards and social entrepreneurs who integrate corporate environmentalism and social goals, Valley Community for Recycling Solutions (VCRS) serves as the Mat-Su community’s resource recovery park & educational/ training campus. Our environmental campaigners inform the public about concepts such as: voluntary simplicity, sustainable lifestyles, responsible consumption and consumption reduction. Sustainability is a process of continuous improvement so that communities continue to evolve and make changes to accomplish their goals to become safer, greener, and more prosperous. The Mat-Su Borough is a self-proclaimed haven for commercial and industrial development and small business with plentiful opportunities for new and expanding markets. Looking around the community, the formation of partnerships is visible; created for the benefit of our community as a whole. Please partner with us to make sure the amount of material kept out of the landfill
increases. Your investment of corrugated cardboard, for example, results in a comprehensive recycling program for our community, putting profits back into our program as a public-service, non-profit organization. All you need to do is drop it off, at no charge, or hire a local pickup service. VCRS has seen an increase in our community’s engagement to recycle. Consistently, we help Alaskans to refine their recycling preparation behavior and ability while adjusting to the “recycling right” attitude. To many people, the local impact that recycling makes does bring to mind the parable of The Starfish Thrower. This story is about a young boy found on the beach among thousands of washed up starfish, eagerly throwing them back into the sea. Upon receiving criticism from a bystander for taking on a task seeming to make little difference, the youngster provides a very rational explanation for his intention and effort. He followed his heart, remaining loyal and dedicated to the effort. Through repetition, as he continues to act upon what the situation demands, he cul-
tivates insight in the observer and raises the level of awareness for all. Critically, a more effective response to resolving this problem is to find the source of what caused the starfish to wash up on shore. Point taken; a non-linear approach to resolving our environmental issues does revolve the problem back to the source and invites collaboration throughout the eco-system. Responding to the bigger picture and to the momentum at the same time generates a greater impact. Could this be what is happening with recycling? Well, recyclers are doing what’s right, considering the circumstances, and acting accordingly. Since festive trends are going green, there is material to craft holiday packaging in the VCRS Reuse store such as: packing peanuts, paper bags, newspaper bundles, and blank newspaper rolls. Saving money begins before you go to the store. Consider using alternatives like cookie tins made out of cardboard boxes from aluminum foil or plastic film rolls, decorate the backside of used copy paper with
watercolor paints or have kids try a marbling technique using food coloring and shaving cream to make wrapping paper. Another gift strategy that aligns simply would be to give only four gifts: Something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. Involving children in the decision making process for their own gifts helps them become savvy consumers. Remember, children can learn by easily helping to separate the recyclables from the many pieces that make up holiday packaging which are not recyclable. We cannot accept foil wrapping paper, tissue paper, cellophane, bows, ribbons, tinsel, string, and Styrofoam. It is difficult to catch these bits and pieces upon delivery to the recycling center and they contaminate the loads sent to our end users. All residents of the Mat-Su Borough are capable of living with the results of an earth friendly lifestyle. Environmental impacts currently being made from the disposal of holiday packaging by recycling alone has helped offset the effects of consumption growth. Let’s not go into the “red” by spending on throwaway items and think about conserving more “green”.

A rogue ice shelf covering the Arctic Ocean? Ned Rozell
Fifteen miles inland from the frozen coast of the Arctic Ocean, Teshekpuk Lake is one of the largest freshwater bodies in Alaska. On its northern shoreline are sandy bluffs that hold fossils of walrus, ringed seals and beluga. Thousands of years ago, this shore was an ocean beach. Digging into that beach in the middle of the tundra, a Fairbanks researcher has found evidence for what she describes as a “rogue ice sheet that isn’t on the map.” Louise Farquharson wrote about that ice mass in a 2018 issue of the journal Geology. She describes something not currently in textbooks — a floating ice shelf that
